Abstract:We consider a class of minimal extensions of the Standard Model with an extra massive neutral gauge boson Z'. They include both family-universal models, where the extra U(1) is associated with (B-L), and non-universal models where the Z' is coupled to a non-trivial linear combination of B and the lepton flavours. After giving an estimate of the range of parameters compatible with a Grand Unified Theory, we present the current experimental bounds, discussing the interplay between electroweak precision tests and direct searches at the Tevatron. Finally, we assess the discovery potential of the early LHC.

SModelS v3: Going Beyond Z2 Topologies

Abstract:SModelS is a public tool for fast reinterpretation of LHC searches for new physics based on a large database of simplified model results. While previous versions were limited to models with a Z2-type symmetry, such as R-parity conserving supersymmetry, version 3 can now handle arbitrary signal topologies. To this end, the tool was fully restructured and now relies on a graph-based description of simplified model topologies. In this work, we present the main conceptual changes and novel features of SModelS v3, together with the inclusion of new experimental searches for resonant production of spin-1 and spin-0 mediators with decays to quarks or to dark matter. Applying these results to a model containing two mediators, we discuss the interplay of resonance and missing energy searches, and the model's coverage by the currently available simplified model results.

Confronting the broken phase N2HDM with Higgs Data

Abstract:The broken phase of the Next-to two-Higgs-doublet model (N2HDM) constitutes an archetype of extended Higgs sectors. In the presence of a softly-broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry throughout the scalar and Yukawa sectors, as the additional gauge singlet field does not interact with fermions, the model admits four variants of Yukawa interactions between the doublets and Standard Model fermions. We confront each type with experimental Higgs Data, especially from CMS and ATLAS detectors at the LHC. Interfacing the models with the state-of-the-art package $\mathtt{HiggsTools}$, we perform a statistical $\chi^2$ analysis to determine the best-fit points and exclusion limits at the $95\%$ and $68\%$ C.L., and identify SM-like Higgs measurements that affect each type the most. We further analyze the exclusion bounds on the additional Higgs bosons at the $95\%$ C.L., paying special attention to searches of hypothetical non-SM Higgs resonances decaying into a pair of bosons or fermions. We show regions where the additional Higgs bosons do not satisfy the narrow-width approximation utilized in most experimental searches.

Z' boson mass reach and model discrimination at muon colliders

Abstract:We study the discrimination power of future multi-TeV muon colliders for a large set of models with extended gauge symmetries and additional neutral gauge bosons ("$Z'$-models"). Our study is carried out using a $\chi^2$-analysis of leptonic observables of s-channel scattering in effective $Z'$-models. We make use of angular and chiral asymmetries induced in such models to find the discovery reach of a given muon collider setup in terms of the $Z'$ mass and to discriminate between the different scenarios. In this context, we discuss how polarized beams - should they become available at muon colliders - or polarization measurements can help in the discrimination. Our results show that typical muon collider setups which are currently under consideration can give a significantly higher reach compared to existing bounds and projections for high-luminosity LHC.

Abstract:The ATLAS collaboration reported excesses at around 2 TeV in the diboson production decaying into hadronic final states. We consider the possibility of explaining the excesses with extra gauge bosons in two simple non-Abelian extensions of the standard model. One is the so-called G(221) models with a symmetry structure of SU(2)(1) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(X) and the other is the G(331) models with an extended symmetry of SU(3)(C) circle times SU(3)(L) circle times Ud(1)(X). The W' and Z' bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of symmetry breaking in the G(221) models are considered in this work: one is SU(2)(L) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(X) circle times SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y), the other is SU(2)(1) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(Y) circle times SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y). The symmetry breaking of the G(331) model is SU(3)(L) circle times U(1)(X) circle times SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y). We perform a global analysis of W' and Z' phenomenology in ten new physics models, including all the channels of W'/Z' decay. Our study shows that the leptonic mode and the dijet mode of W'/Z' decays impose a very stringent bound on the parameter space in several new physics models. Such tight bounds provide a useful guide for building new physics models to address on the diboson anomalies. We also note that the left-right and leptophobic models can explain the 3.4 sigma WZ excess if the 2.6 sigma deviation in the W+W- pair around 2 TeV were confirmed to be a fluctuation of the SM backgrounds.

Abstract:Abstract An update is provided on theoretical and experimental aspects of a simple extension of the standard model featuring right-handed neutrinos and a second neutral gauge boson ( Z ′). We identify an ambiguity which a priori exists in the definition of electric charge in this model, and show spontaneous symmetry breaking can resolve it. We then re-analyse the experimental bounds on the mass of Z ′ in the light of recent measurements of the standard Z boson mass and width at LEP and SLC. We find that the lower bound at 90% confidence level for the Z ′ mass is 460 GeV.

Abstract:The recent LHCb determination of the direct CP asymmetries in the decays $D^0 \to K^+ K^-, \pi^+ \pi^-$ hints at a sizeable breaking of two approximate symmetries of the SM: CP and U-spin. We aim at explaining the data with BSM physics and use the framework of flavorful $Z^\prime$ models. Interestingly, experimental and theoretical constraints very much narrow down the shape of viable models: Viable, anomaly-free models are electron- and muon-phobic and feature a light $Z^\prime$ of 10-20 GeV coupling only to right-handed fermions. The $Z^\prime$ can be searched for in low mass dijets or at the LHC as well as dark photon searches. A light $Z^\prime$ of $\sim$ 3 GeV or $\sim$ 5-7 GeV can moreover resolve the longstanding discrepancy in the $J/\psi, \psi^\prime$ branching ratios with pion form factors from fits to $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^-$ data, and simultaneously explain the charm CP asymmetries. Smoking gun signatures for this scenario are $\Upsilon$ and charmonium decays into pions, taus or invisbles.

Abstract:We explore the discovery potential of W' and Z' boson searches for various SU(2)(1) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(X) models at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), after taking into account the constraints from low energy precision measurements and direct searches at both the Tevatron (1.96 TeV) and the LHC (7 TeV). In such models, the W' and Z' bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of the symmetry breaking are considered in this work: one is SU(2)(L) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(X) --> SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y) (breaking pattern I), another is SU(2)(1) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(Y) --> SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y) (breaking pattern II). Examining the single production channel of W' and Z' with their subsequent leptonic decays, we find that the probability of detecting W' and Z' bosons in the considered models at the LHC (with 14 TeV) is highly limited by the low energy precision data constraints. We show that observing Z' alone, without seeing a W', does not rule out new physics models with non-Abelian gauge extension, such as the phobic models in breaking pattern I. Models in breaking pattern II would predict the discovery of degenerate W' and Z' bosons at the LHC.

Abstract:Dynamical, metastable supersymmetry breaking appears to be a generic phenomena in supersymmetric field theories. It's simplest implementation is within the so-called "retrofitted O'Raifeartaigh Models". While seemingly flexible, model building in these theories is significantly constrained. In gauge-mediated versions, if the approximate $R$ symmetry of the theory is spontaneously broken, the messenger scale is fixed; if explicitly broken by retrofitted couplings, a very small dimensionless number is required; if supergravity corrections are responsible for the symmetry breaking, at least two moderately small couplings are required, and there is a large range of possible messenger scales. In gravity mediated versions, achieving $m_{3/2} \approx M_Z$ is a problem of discrete tuning. With plausible assumptions, one can't achieve this to better than a factor of 100, perhaps accounting for a {\it little hierarchy} and the surprisingly large value of the Higgs mass.
Two-Real-Singlet Model Benchmark Planes -- A Moriond Update

Abstract:I present an update on the the Benchmark Planes in the Two-Real-Singlet Model (TRSM), a model that enhances the Standard Model (SM) scalar sector by two real singlets, where an additional Z2 x Z2' symmetry is imposed. I discuss the case where all fields acquire a vacuum expectation value, such that the model contains in total 3 CP-even neutral scalars that can interact with each other. I remind the readers of the previously proposed benchmark planes, current constraints, and possible signatures at current and future colliders. This is an update for Moriond 2023 of results presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2209.10996" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10996">arXiv:2209.10996</a>.

Abstract:The interference effects between an extra neutral spin-1 Z'-boson and the Standard Model background in the Drell-Yan channel at the LHC are studied in detail. The final state with two oppositely charged leptons is considered. The interference contribution to the new physics signal, currently not fully taken into account by experimental collaborations in Z'-searches and in the interpretation of the results, can be substantial. It may affect limits or discovery prospects of Z' at the LHC. As the Z'-boson interference is model-dependent, a proper treatment would a priori require a dedicated experimental analysis for each particular model. Doing so could potentially improve the sensitivity to new physics, but would require significantly more experimental effort. At the same time, it is shown that one can define an invariant mass window, valid for a wide range of models, for which the contribution of the model-dependent interference to the Beyond the Standard Model signal is reduced to O(10%), comparable to the level of the combined uncertainty from parton densities and higher order corrections. This quasi-model-independent "magic cut" does not scale with the mass of the Z'-boson and is approximately constant over a large range of masses. Such control of the interference effects relies on not-too-small branching ratios of Z' to leptons (typically of at least a few percent) which can be suppressed, however, by additional new decay channels of the Z'; a small width-to-mass ratio alone does not guarantee the interference to be small over an arbitrary kinematic range. Under the general assumption that these new decay channels of Z' are not dominant, one can perform quasi-model-independent analyses, preserving the current scheme used by the experimental collaborations for the Z'-boson search using the suggested invariant mass window cut.

The Twin Higgs: Natural Electroweak Breaking from Mirror Symmetry

Abstract:We present `twin Higgs models', simple realizations of the Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson that protect the weak scale from radiative corrections up to scales of order 5 - 10 TeV. In the ultra-violet these theories have a discrete symmetry which interchanges each Standard Model particle with a corresponding particle which transforms under a twin or mirror Standard Model gauge group. In addition, the Higgs sector respects an approximate global SU(4) symmetry. When this global symmetry is broken, the discrete symmetry tightly constrains the form of corrections to the pseudo-Goldstone Higgs potential, allowing natural electroweak symmetry breaking. Precision electroweak constraints are satisfied by construction. These models demonstrate that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, stabilizing the weak scale does not require new light particles charged under the Standard Model gauge groups.

Abstract:Recently, ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC put on light the relevant results in the measurement precision of the Higgs and BSM. In such a report, where the resonance direct search was made in the $\gamma Z$ channel, a mass adjustment distribution for the reconstructed $Z$ boson and photon was established. Thus, simultaneously with the signal-from-background separation, the number of events has been perfectly described, and an excess signal approximately twice that expected by the Standard Model (SM) has been noticed, which is equivalent to a significance of 2.2 standard deviations. In this study, we examine how any possible new physics models can explain this excess, such as the CP-conserving Two-Higgs doublet model (2HDMs), the Inert doublet model (IDM), and the Higgs triplet model (HTM). While considering the available theoretical and most recent experimental constraints, the phenomenological implications of existing extensions beyond the SM are discussed, and prospects for precision studies of these processes are described. We have found that the excess could be explained in the BSM framework studied, depending on the charged and double-charged Higgs boson masses.

Dark matter phenomenology in Z'2 broken singlet extended 2HDM

Abstract:Many different approaches have been made to explain the nature of dark matter (DM), but it remains and unsolved mystery of our universe. In this work we examine a type II two-Higgs-doublet model extended by a complex singlet (2HDMS), where the pseudo-scalar component of the singlet acts as a natural DM candidate. The DM candidate is stabilized by a Z'2 symmetry, which is broken spontaneously by the singlet acquiring a vacuum expectation value (vev). This vev in turn causes the scalar component of the singlet to mix with the scalar components of the two doublets, which results in three scalar Higgs particles. Additionally we aim to include an excess around 95 GeV, which was observed at CSM and LEP and can be explained by one of the three scalar Higgs particles. After introducing the model, we apply experimental and theoretical constraints and find a viable benchmark point. We then look into the DM phenomenology as well as collider phenomenology.

Abstract:It is argued that under various circumstances spontaneously broken discrete symmetry, which is commonly thought to lead to grave cosmological problems, need not do so. A particularly interesting example is the two-doublet version of the standard model. This extended model avoids unacceptable flavor-changing neutral currents in a natural way only if an appropriate discrete symmetry is postulated. Here it is shown that this discrete symmetry is anomalous. As a result, when it is spontaneously broken it does not produce stable domain walls (which would be problematic for cosmology). Instead an interesting cosmological scenario results, which incorporates substantial deviations from thermal equilibrium at the QCD scale. If axions are used to address the strong CP problem, then the analysis is altered. Depending on the Peccei-Quinn charge assignments, domain walls may be either stable or nonexistent.
Multi-$Z'$ signatures of spontaneously broken local $U(1)'$ symmetry

Abstract:We discuss multi-$Z'$ signatures coming from decays of Higgs bosons in models with a spontaneously broken $U(1)'$ symmetry, which can be observed as "lepton jets" or multi-lepton final states depending on the mass range of new bosons. We consider anomaly-free $U(1)'$ models without introducing new fermions except for right-handed neutrinos, in which the Higgs sector is composed of an isospin doublet and a singlet fields with zero and non-zero $U(1)'$ charges, respectively. The multi-$Z'$ signatures can then be obtained via the decays of the discovered (extra) Higgs boson $h$ ($\phi$), i.e., $h\to Z'Z'$, $\phi \to Z'Z'$ and/or $h \to \phi\phi \to 4Z'$ as far as kinematically allowed. We give the upper limit on the branching ratios of $h$ into $Z'Z'$ and $4Z'$ from the current experimental data in each model. We also show the deviation in the $hhh$ coupling from the standard model prediction at one-loop level, and find that its amount is typically smaller than 1\%.

Abstract:The violation of spatial parity symmetry ( ) in strong interactions have never been observed experimentally. However a -breaking term can be included in the QCD Lagrangian. Hence, the local parity symmetry breaking can occur due to large topological fluctuations at high temperature with dynamic generation of nontrivial topological charge configurations. A necessary condition for observing these effects is a sufficiently large space dimension and a long lifetime of a hot drop of QCD medium, which is available in central nuclear collisions at the LHC. In order to study the effects caused by local -breaking in relativistic heavy-ion collisions we integrated them in Monte Carlo generators. Based on the analysis of the Monte Carlo data on the studied observables, taking into account the responses of the detecting systems of the ALICE facility under LHC Run 2 and Run 3 conditions, recommendations will be given on the criteria for selecting events, tracks, and choosing kinematic variables in terms of increasing sensitivity to the effects of local parity non-conservation.
