Abstract:This paper considers the operation of offshore oil and gas platform energy systems with energy supply from wind turbines to reduce local CO2 emissions. A new integrated energy system model for operational planning and simulation has been developed and implemented in an open-source software tool (Oogeso). This model and tool is first presented, and then applied on a relevant North Sea case with different energy supply alternatives to quantify and compare CO2 emission reductions and other key indicators.
Systems and Control
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to reduce local carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by optimizing the energy system operation of offshore oil and gas platforms, especially by introducing wind power generation. Specifically, the author has developed a new integrated energy system model and applied it to a relevant case in the North Sea to quantify and compare the emission reduction effects and other key indicators under different energy supply schemes. ### Main problem decomposition: 1. **Reducing CO₂ emissions**: Traditional offshore oil and gas platforms rely on gas turbines to provide local energy, which results in a large amount of CO₂ emissions. In order to meet policy goals, legal limits or cope with high carbon taxes, alternative energy sources need to be found to reduce these emissions. 2. **Introducing renewable energy**: The research proposes several alternative solutions, such as using offshore wind power generation, power supply from the shore via cables, switching to hydrogen - based gas turbine fuels or fuel cells, etc. Among them, the application of wind power generation and its impact on platform operation strategies are mainly explored. 3. **Optimizing energy system operation**: With the introduction of new energy sources, new operation strategies need to be formulated to make full use of available resources and achieve optimal performance under given constraints. For this purpose, researchers have developed an open - source software tool (Oogeso) for simulating and optimizing the energy system operation of offshore platforms. 4. **Evaluating the effects of different configurations**: Through simulation analysis of different configurations (such as wind turbine capacity, energy storage system, etc.), evaluate their performance in CO₂ emission reduction and other performance indicators, so as to provide guidance for practical applications. ### Research background and motivation: - Offshore oil and gas platforms are usually isolated systems and rely on gas turbines for energy supply. - With increasingly strict environmental protection requirements, the traditional high - emission mode is difficult to sustain. - New energy supply methods (such as wind power generation) make it possible to reduce emissions, but their volatility and stability issues need to be considered. - By optimizing operation strategies, the carbon footprint can be significantly reduced while maintaining production efficiency. In summary, this paper aims to explore and realize the low - carbon transformation of offshore oil and gas platforms by integrating clean energy technologies such as wind power generation and combining advanced modeling and optimization methods.
