Abstract:The Collatz conjecture asserts that repeatedly iterating $f(x) = (3x + 1)/2^{a(x)}$, where $a(x)$ is the highest exponent for which $2^{a(x)}$ exactly divides $3x+1$, always lead to $1$ for any odd positive integer $x$. Here, we present an arborescence graph constructed from iterations of $g(x) = (2^{e(x)}x - 1)/3$, which is the inverse of $f(x)$ and where $x \not \equiv [0]_3$ and $e(x)$ is any positive integer satisfying $2^{e(x)}x - 1 \equiv [0]_3$, with $[0]_3$ denoting $0\pmod{3}$. The integer patterns inferred from the resulting arborescence provide new insights into proving the validity of the conjecture.

Abstract:Collatz Conjecture (also known as Ulam's conjecture and 3x+1 problem) concerns the behavior of the iterates of a particular function on natural numbers. A number of generalizations of the conjecture have been subjected to extensive study. This paper explores Additive Collatz Trajectories, a particular case of a generalization of Collatz conjecture and puts forward a sufficient and necessary condition for looping of Additive Collatz Trajectories, along with two minor results. An algorithm to compute the number of equivalence classes when natural numbers are quotiented by the limiting behavior of their corresponding trajectories is also proposed.

Abstract:We present the long sought visual pattern in the Collatz problem with the aid of a logarithmic spiral. Using this newly discovered pattern, we show that the Collatz problem is linked to primes via Jacobsthal numbers. We then prove that no non-trivial cycles exist on the spiral and by extension in the Collatz problem.

Abstract:In a previous article, we reduced the unsolved problem of the convergence of Collatz sequences, to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers, that are divisible by 3. In this article, we further reduce this set to odd numbers that are congruent to 21 mod 24. We also show that either the Collatz sequence of a given odd number or an equivalent Collatz sequence reverses to a multiple of 3. Moreover, we construct a network composed of Collatz sequences of all odd numbers.

Abstract:It is shown that every Collatz sequence $C(s)$ consists only of same structured finite subsequences $C^h(s)$ for $s\equiv9\ (mod\ 12)$ or $C^t(s)$ for $s\equiv3,7\ (mod\ 12)$. For starting numbers of specific residue classes ($mod\ 12\cdot2^h$) or ($mod\ 12\cdot2^{t+1}$) the finite subsequences have the same length $h,t$. It is conjectured that for each $h,t\geq2$ the number of all admissible residue classes is given exactly by the Fibonacci sequence. This has been proved for $2\leq h,t\leq50$. Collatz's conjecture is equivalent to the conjecture that for each $s\in\mathbb{N},s>1$, there exists $k\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $T^k(s)<s$. The least $k\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $T^k(s)<s$ is called the stopping time of $s$, which we will denote by $\sigma(s)$. It is shown that Collatz's conjecture is true, if every starting number $s\equiv3,7\ (mod\ 12)$ have finite stopping time. We denote $\tau(s)$ as the number of $C^t(s)$ until $\sigma(s)$ is reached for a starting number $s\equiv3,7\ (mod\ 12)$. Starting numbers of specific residue classes ($mod\ 3\cdot2^{\sigma(s)}$) have the same stopping times $\sigma(s)$ and $\tau(s)$. By using $\tau(s)$ it is shown that almost all $s\equiv3,7\ (mod\ 12)$ have finite stopping time and statistically two out of three $s\equiv3,7\ (mod\ 12)$ have $\tau(s)=1$. Further it is shown what consequences it entails, if a $C(s)$ grows to infinity.

Abstract:The Collatz problem is related to the fixed point problem, and is widely used in mathematics. It has attracted a wide range of math enthusiasts, but is still difficult to solve. So, this article aimed to study the extension of the Collatz problem, more widely, in k-adic. We define a new sequence called Z transformation sequence. Under a suitable assumptions, we can prove that the limit set of the Z transformation sequence must be M={1,2}.

Abstract:We represent the generalized Collatz function with the recursive ruler function r(2n) = r(n) + 1 and r(2n + 1) = 1. We generate even-only and odd-only Collatz subsequences that contain significantly fewer elements term by term, to 2 and 1, respectively, than are present in the original 3n + 1 and the Terras-modified Collatz sequences. We show that a nonlinear, coupled system of difference equations yields a complete acyclic (except for the trivial cycle) Collatz tree in odds not divisible by 3 with root vertex 1. We construct a complete Collatz tree with the axiom of choice and prove the Collatz conjecture.

Abstract:Exploring the Collatz Conjecture and changing the expression from 3n + 1 to 5n + 1, we found patterns in different sets of numbers. Some numbers reduce to one (as stated in the Collatz Conjecture), some might escape to infinity, and some get stuck in repeating cycles. To further explore the patterns involved in Collatz-like expressions, we changed the expression to 3n+5 and found connections between 3n+1 and 3n+5.

Abstract:In this article, we reduce the unsolved problem of convergence of Collatz sequences to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers that are divisible by 3. We give an elementary proof of the fact that a Collatz sequence does not increase monotonically. We define a unique reverse Collatz sequence and conjecture that this sequence always converges to a multiple of $3$.

Abstract:In the present paper, we are interested in classifying of Collatz sequences on based to the different behavior of these sequences when their lengths tend to infinity. A Collatz infinite sequence can be defined as an infinite ordered set of positive integers such that the term of rank n is results of applying Collatz map n times to the first term. Such term can be expressed on the form Tn(P)=A(P,n)P+B(P,n). When n tends to infinity, each function among the two partial coefficients denoted by A(P,n) and B(P,n) behaves in different ways. This allows us to determine all categories of Collatz infinite sequences. First, we carry out a classification of Collatz infinite sequences on based of the different possible limits of the two coefficients. In second time, we determine the different proportions of every class of the infinite sequences. Note that results obtained do not represent a proof of a Collatz conjecture but they have a strong relationship with this conjecture and it allows us to better understand the behavior of Collatz sequences when n tend to infinity.

Abstract:In this article, we define a very important sequence of functions, all the functions of this sequence present behaviors very close to that of the Collatz function. The study of such functions allows us to obtain very interesting results concerning the collatz conjecture and more precisely concerning the generalization of this problem, the nature of the Collatz function, on the statement of the Collatz conjecture we show that this conjecture can be stated for each function on a well-determined subset of Z and other interesting properties in relation to the behaviors of Collatz sequences are studied and proved in this article.

Abstract:In this research, an optimal algorithm for the Collatz conjecture is presented. Properties such as the convergence of the algorithm and an equation that relates the algorithm to the classical Collatz conjecture are obtained. It is validated that the proposed theory is correct with several examples; as a sector of mathematicians believes that the Collatz conjecture fails in some power of $3$. The algorithm was applied to the first $600$ powers of $3$, where the convergence of the proposed algorithm was verified.

Abstract:The famous (3n + 1) or Collatz conjecture has admitted some progress over the last several decades towards the conclusion that the conjecture is true (i.e. that all Collatz sequences will eventually reach a value of one), but has stubbornly resisted a proof. Many professional mathematicians have applied an impressive array of machinery to its analysis, and discovered some limits or boundaries to where violations of the Collatz conjecture must be, if they exist. Here we attempt to look at the conjecture differently than most mathematicians or number theorists, i.e. we will study the conjecture from the points of view of a statistician/data scientist and of an engineer. As a statistician or data scientist, we look at Collatz sequences as if they were sequences found in nature, like a collection of time series produced by some natural process, ignoring for the time being their completely deterministic origins. As an engineer, we try to tinker with Collatz sequences to see what makes them tick, and engineer -- tweak and build -- changes to the sequences that likewise do interesting things, after first specifying exactly what we mean by interesting. Although these analyses do not yield a proof of the Collatz conjecture, like other efforts they present reasons to think that the conjecture is probably true, and the hope is that the analyses of sequences similar to Collatz sequences will tell us something about the nature of Collatz conjecture itself, and/or lead us into interesting and fruitful new directions. Indeed, many of the phenomenon revealed in the sequences of these Collatz-like programs are arguably more interesting than, and suggest conjectures that are as interesting as, the Collatz conjecture itself.

Abstract:Considering all possible paths that a natural number can take following the rules of the algorithm proposed in the Collatz conjecture we construct a graph that can be interpreted as an infinite network that contemplates all possible paths within the conjecture. This allows us to understand why the minimal element of the Collatz orbit $x$ is equal to 1. Subsequently we define the extended Collatz conjecture equal to $o x+1$ when $x$ is odd and $x/2$ when $x$ is even with $o$ an odd number greater than $3$ and we show that there are infinite orbits in the extended Collatz conjecture that diverges. Finally, we find interesting theorems relating the Fibonacci sequence to prime numbers.

Abstract:The complex structures of all proteins in nature are outcomes of a random walk driven by mutation and selection. Reconstructing the fitness landscape staging this process based on first-principle physical rules or experimental measurements is difficult. In this article we turn the popular Sudoku game into an artificial fitness landscape and use it as a model system to study sequence evolution under constraints. The Sudoku rules, which are human-mind friendly, intertwine a rugged landscape for sequences composed of digits, mimicking the functional constraints felt by a tightly folded protein. Simulated evolution reveals interesting properties of the valley-crossing dynamics on this complex landscape. It is found that (i) the mutation accumulation rate during valley-crossing is constant among different evolutionary pathways and depends on the ruggedness of the landscape; (ii) genetic drift and neutral networks play constructive roles during the process of searching for novel functions; and (iii) under strong selection, gene duplication can speed up the evolution by relaxing, but not completely liberating, the redundant copy from selective pressure. Insights gained from this prototype model may help us understand the evolution of real proteins.

Abstract:Consider the recursive relation generating a new positive integer $n_{\ell +1}$ from the positive integer $n_{\ell }$ according to the following simple rules: if the integer $n_{\ell }$ is odd, $n_{\ell +1}=3n_{\ell }+1$; if the integer $n_{\ell }$ is even, $n_{\ell +1}=n_{\ell }/2$. The so-called Collatz conjecture states that, starting from any positive integer $N$, the recursion characterized by the continued application of these rules ends up in the cycle $4,$ $2,1$. This conjecture is generally believed to be true (on the basis of extensive numerical checks), but it is as yet unproven. In this paper -- based on the assumption that the Collatz conjecture is indeed true -- we present a quite simple extension of it, which entails the possibility to divide all natural numbers into $3$ disjoint classes, to each of which we conjecture -- on the basis of (not very extensive) numerical checks -- $1/3$ of all natural numbers belong; or, somewhat equivalently, to $2$ disjoint classes, to which we conjecture that respectively $1/3$ and $2/3$ of all natural numbers belong.

The Structure of the Route to the Period-three Orbit in the Collatz Map

Abstract:This study examines the Collatz map from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics. By expressing integers in terms of Sharkovsky's ordering, we show that it is sufficient to consider only odd initial values for analyzing the iterations. We introduce the concept of ``direction phases'' to classify the iterations into upward and downward phases, and define a recursive function family $F_s$ based on the number of upward phases. A logarithmic relationship between iteration time and initial values is established, demonstrating that the Collatz map converges to the period-three orbit after a finite number of iterations. We also identify attractor domains with power-law distributions and find that odd numbers classified by upward phases follow a Gamma distribution. Finally, we show that the Collatz map is equivalent to a shift map in binary, and that the ergodicity of the shift map ensures the Collatz map will inevitably evolve onto its attractors, providing theoretical support for the Collatz conjecture. This work offers valuable insights for the study of discrete dynamical systems and related problems in number theory.
