Abstract:Given a convex domain and its convex sub-domain we prove a variant of domain monotonicity for the Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian. As an application of our method we also obtain an upper bound for Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian of a convex domain.

Abstract:Inspired by a recent result of Funano's, we provide a sharp quantitative comparison result between the first nontrivial eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian on bounded convex domains $\Omega_{1} \subset \Omega_{2}$ in any dimension $d$ greater than or equal to two, recovering domain monotonicity up to an explicit multiplicative factor. We provide upper and lower bounds for such multiplicative factors for higher-order eigenvalues, and study their behaviour with respect to the dimension and order. We further consider different scenarios where convexity is no longer imposed. In a final section we formulate some related open problems.

Abstract:We generalize a classical inequality between the eigenvalues of the Laplacians with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded, planar domains: in 1955, Payne proved that below the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian there exist at least $k + 2$ eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian, provided the domain is convex. It has, however, been conjectured that this should hold for any domain. Here we show that the statement indeed remains true for all simply connected planar Lipschitz domains. The proof relies on a novel variational principle.

Abstract:We consider the eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For a certain class of bounded, simply connected planar domains we prove monotonicity properties of the first eigenfunction. As a consequence, we establish a variant of the hot spots conjecture for mixed boundary conditions. Moreover, we obtain an inequality between the lowest eigenvalue of this mixed problem and the lowest eigenvalue of the corresponding dual problem where the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are interchanged. The proofs are based on a novel variational principle, which we establish.

Abstract:We obtain upper bounds on the number of nodal domains of Laplace eigenfunctions on chain domains with Neumann boundary conditions. The chain domains consist of a family of planar domains, with piecewise smooth boundary, that are joined by thin necks. Our work does not assume a lower bound on the width of the necks in the chain domain. As a consequence, we prove an upper bound on the eigenvalue of Courant sharp eigenfunctions that is independent of the widths of the necks.

Abstract:We are interested in inequalities that bound the Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplaciancs in terms of their semiclassical counterpart. We show that the classical inequalities of Berezin-Li-Yau and Kröger, valid for Riesz exponents $\gamma\geq 1$, extend to certain values $\gamma<1$, provided the underlying domain is convex. We also characterize the implications of a possible failure of Pólya's conjecture for convex sets in terms of Riesz means. These findings allow us to describe the asymptotic behavior of solutions of a spectral shape optimization problem for convex sets.

A sharp quantitative nonlinear Poincaré inequality on convex domains

Abstract:For any $p \in ( 1, +\infty)$, we give a new inequality for the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue $\mu _ p (\Omega, \varphi)$ of the $p$-Laplacian on a convex domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with a power-concave weight $\varphi$. Our result improves the classical estimate in terms of the diameter, first stated in a seminal paper by Payne and Weinberger: we add in the lower bound an extra term depending on the second largest John semi-axis of $\Omega$ (equivalent to a power of the width in the special case $N = 2$). The power exponent in the extra term is sharp, and the constant in front of it is explicitly tracked, thus enlightening the interplay between space dimension, nonlinearity and power-concavity. Moreover, we attack the stability question: we prove that, if $\mu _ p (\Omega, \varphi)$ is close to the lower bound, then $\Omega$ is close to a thin cylinder, and $\varphi$ is close to a function which is constant along its axis. As intermediate results, we establish a sharp $L^ \infty$ estimate for the associated eigenfunctions, and we determine the asymptotic behaviour of $\mu _ p (\Omega, \varphi)$ for varying weights and domains, including the case of collapsing geometries.

Abstract:In this short survey, we derive some weyl-type universal inequalities of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a closed Riemannian manifold of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also give upper bounds for the $L_{\infty}$ norm of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in the same setting. A detailed proof of these results did not seem to appear in the literature but the results follow from a simple combination of Milman's work and Cheng-Li's work.

Abstract:Along with the partition of a planar bounded domain $\Omega$ by the nodal set of a fixed eigenfunction of the Laplace operator in $\Omega$, one can consider another natural partition of $\Omega$ by, roughly speaking, gradient flow lines of a special type (separatrices) of this eigenfunction. Elements of such partition are called Neumann domains and their boundaries are Neumann lines. When the eigenfunction is a Morse function, this partition corresponds to the Morse--Smale complex and its fundamental properties have been systematically investigated by Band & Fajman (2016). Although, in the case of general position, eigenfunctions are always of the Morse type, particular eigenfunctions can possess degenerate critical points. In the present work, we propose a way to characterize Neumann domains and lines of an arbitrary eigenfunction. Instead of requiring the nondegeneracy of critical points of the eigenfunction, its real analyticity is principally used. The analyticity allows for the presence of degenerate critical points but significantly limits their possible diversity. Even so, the eigenfunction can possess curves of critical points, which have to belong naturally to the Neumann lines set, as well as critical points of a saddle-node type. We overview all possible types of degenerate critical points in the eigenfunction's critical set and provide a numerically based evidence that each of them can be observed for particular eigenfunctions. Alongside with [Band & Fajman, 2016], our approach is inspired by a little-known note of Weinberger that appeared back in 1963, where a part of the Neumann line set, under the name of "effectless cut", was explicitly introduced and studied for the first eigenfunctions in domains with nontrivial topology. In addition, we provide an asymptotic counting of Neumann domains for a disk and rectangles in analogy with the Pleijel constant.

Abstract:This work considers the Neumann eigenvalue problem for the weighted Laplacian on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g,\partial M)$ under the singular perturbation. This perturbation involves the imposition of vanishing Dirichlet boundary conditions on a small portion of the boundary. We derive a sharp asymptotic of the perturbed eigenvalues, as the Dirichlet part shrinks to a point $x^*\in \partial M$, in terms of the spectral parameters of the unperturbed system. This asymptotic demonstrates the impact of the geometric properties of the manifold at a specific point $x^*$. Furthermore, it becomes evident that the shape of the Dirichlet region holds significance as it impacts the first terms of the asymptotic. A crucial part of this work is the construction of the singularity structure of the restricted Neumann Green's function which may be of independent interest. We employ a fusion of layer potential techniques and pseudo-differential operators during this work.

Abstract:In this paper we study optimization problems for Neumann eigenvalues $\mu_k$ among convex domains with a constraint on the diameter or the perimeter. We work mainly in the plane, though some results are stated in higher dimension. We study the existence of an optimal domain in all considered cases. We also consider the case of the unit disk, giving values of the index $k$ for which it can be or cannot be extremal. We give some numerical examples for small values of $k$ that lead us to state some conjectures.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a bounded domain and let $\lambda_1, \lambda_2, \dots$ denote the sequence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider inequalities for $\lambda_n$ that are independent of the domain $\Omega$. A well--known such inequality follows from the Berezin--Li--Yau approach. The purpose of this paper is to point out a certain degree of flexibility in the Li--Yau approach. We use it to prove a new type of two-point inequality which are strictly stronger than what is implied by Berezin-Li-Yau itself. For example, when $d=2$, one has $ 2 \lambda_n + \lambda_{2n} \geq 10 \pi n/|\Omega|.$

Abstract:We consider the Laplace operator in the exterior of a compact set in the plane, subject to Robin boundary conditions. If the boundary coupling is sufficiently negative, there are at least two discrete eigenvalues below the essential spectrum. We state a general conjecture that the second eigenvalue is maximised by the exterior of a disk under isochoric or isoperimetric constraints. We prove an isoelastic version of the conjecture for the exterior of convex domains. Finally, we establish a monotonicity result for the second eigenvalue under the condition that the compact set is strictly star-shaped and centrally symmetric.
