Abstract:The objective here is to find the maximum polygon, in area, which can be enclosed in a given triangle, for the polygons: parallelograms, rectangles and squares. It will initially be assumed that the choices are inscribed polygons, that is all vertices of the polygon are on the sides of the triangle. This concept will be generalized later to include wedged polygons.

Abstract:The first two installments of this series of papers dealt with the maximum area polygons: Parallelogram, Rectangle, Square or Equilateral Triangle, in given triangles. Minimum area polygons were also considered in the second paper on Equilateral Triangles. In this paper the puzzle will be turned the other way around. Given the regular unit polygons, a Square, Pentagon, or Hexagon, we searched for the smallest area triangle(s) which contains it. The Dynamic Software Sketchpad v5.10 BETA was used for all examples and figures throughout the work.

Abstract:I introduce the problem of finding maximal sets of equiangular lines, in both its real and complex versions, attempting to write the treatment that I would have wanted when I first encountered the subject. Equiangular lines intersect in the overlap region of quantum information theory, the octonions and Hilbert's twelfth problem. The question of how many equiangular lines can fit into a space of a given dimension is easy to pose -- a high-school student can grasp it -- yet it is hard to answer, being as yet unresolved. This contrast of ease and difficulty gives the problem a classic charm.

Abstract:Given a set S endowed with a convexity structure, a hemispace is a convex subset of S which has convex complement. We recall that R^n_{max} is a semimodule over the max-plus semifield. A convexity structure of current interest is provided by R^n_{max} naturally endowed with the max-plus (or tropical) convexity. In this paper we provide a geometric description of a max-plus hemispace. We show that a max-plus hemispace has a conical decomposition as a finite union of disjoint max-plus cones. These cones can be interpreted as faces of several max-plus hyperplanes. Briec-Horvath proved that the closure of a max-plus hemispace is bounded by a max-plus hyperplane. Given a hyperplane, we give a simple condition for the assignment of the faces between a pair of complementary max-plus hemispaces. Our result allows for counting and enumeration of the associated max-plus hemispaces. We recall that an n-dimensional max-plus hyperplane is called strictly affine and nondegenerate if it has a linear equation that contains all variables x_1,x_2,...,x_n and a free term. We prove that the number of max-plus hemispaces in R^n_max, supported by strictly affine nondegenerate hyperplanes centered in the origin, is twice the n-th ordered Bell number. Our work can be viewed as a complement to the recent results of Katz-Nitica-Sergeev, who described generating sets for max-plus hemispaces, and the results of Briec-Horvath, who proved that closed/open max-plus hemispaces are max-plus closed/open halfspaces.

Abstract:A tiling of the unit square is an MTP tiling if the smallest tile can tile all the other tiles. We look at the function $f(n)=\max \sum s_i$, where $s_i$ is the side length of the $i$th tile and the sum is taken over all MTP tilings with $n$ tiles. If $n=k^2+3$, it was conjectured that $f(k^2+3)=k+1/k$. We show that any tiling that violates the conjecture must consist of at least three tile sizes and has exactly one minimal tile.

Commutative Properties of Schubert Puzzles with Convex Polygonal Boundary Shapes

Abstract:We generalize classical triangular Schubert puzzles to puzzles with convex polygonal boundary. We give these puzzles a geometric Schubert calculus interpretation and derive novel combinatorial commutativity statements, using purely geometric arguments, for puzzles with four, five, and six sides, having various types of symmetry in their boundary conditions. We also present formulas for the associated structure constants in terms of Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and we prove an analogue of commutativity for parallelogram-shaped equivariant puzzles.

Maximal Distortion of Geodesic Diameters in Polygonal Domains

Abstract:For a polygon $P$ with holes in the plane, we denote by $\varrho(P)$ the ratio between the geodesic and the Euclidean diameters of $P$. It is shown that over all convex polygons with $h$~convex holes, the supremum of $\varrho(P)$ is between $\Omega(h^{1/3})$ and $O(h^{1/2})$. The upper bound improves to $O(1+\min\{h^{3/4}\Delta,h^{1/2}\Delta^{1/2}\})$ if every hole has diameter at most $\Delta\cdot {\rm diam}_2(P)$; and to $O(1)$ if every hole is a \emph{fat} convex polygon. Furthermore, we show that the function $g(h)=\sup_P \varrho(P)$ over convex polygons with $h$ convex holes has the same growth rate as an analogous quantity over geometric triangulations with $h$ vertices when $h\rightarrow \infty$.

On Maximizing the Distance to a Given Point over an Intersection of Balls II

Abstract:In this paper the problem of maximizing the distance to a given fixed point over an intersection of balls is considered. It is known that this problem is NP complete in the general case, since any subset sum problem can be solved upon solving a maximization of the distance over an intersection of balls to a point inside the convex hull. The general context is: in [1] it is shown that exists a polynomial algorithm which always solves the maximization problem if the given point is outside the convex hull of the centers of the balls. Naturally one asks if there is a polynomial algorithm which solves the problem for a point inside the convex hull. A conjecture stated in a previous paper, [1] is proved, under slightly stronger conditions. The proven conjecture allows a polynomial algorithm for points on the facets of the convex hull and shows that such points share the maximizer with all the points in a small enough ball centered at it, thus including points in the interior of the convex hull of the ball centers.

Happy Ending: An Empty Hexagon in Every Set of 30 Points

Abstract:Satisfiability solving has been used to tackle a range of long-standing open math problems in recent years. We add another success by solving a geometry problem that originated a century ago. In the 1930s, Esther Klein's exploration of unavoidable shapes in planar point sets in general position showed that every set of five points includes four points in convex position. For a long time, it was open if an empty hexagon, i.e., six points in convex position without a point inside, can be avoided. In 2006, Gerken and Nicolás independently proved that the answer is no. We establish the exact bound: Every 30-point set in the plane in general position contains an empty hexagon. Our key contributions include an effective, compact encoding and a search-space partitioning strategy enabling linear-time speedups even when using thousands of cores.

On Optimal Point Sets Determining Distinct Triangles

Abstract:Erdős and Fishburn studied the maximum number of points in the plane that span $k$ distances and classified these configurations, as an inverse problem of the Erdős distinct distances problem. We consider the analogous problem for triangles. Past work has obtained the optimal sets for one and two distinct triangles in the plane. In this paper, we resolve a conjecture that at most six points in the plane can span three distinct triangles, and obtain the hexagon as the unique configuration that achieves this. We also provide evidence that optimal sets cannot be on the square lattice in the general case.

Automated Mathematical Discovery and Verification: Minimizing Pentagons in the Plane

Abstract:We present a comprehensive demonstration of how automated reasoning can assist mathematical research, both in the discovery of conjectures and in their verification. Our focus is a discrete geometry problem: What is $\mu_{5}(n)$, the minimum number of convex pentagons induced by $n$ points in the plane? In the first stage toward tackling this problem, automated reasoning tools guide discovery and conjectures: we use SAT-based tools to find abstract configurations of points that would induce few pentagons. Afterward, we use Operations Research tools to find and visualize realizations of these configurations in the plane, if they exist. Mathematical thought and intuition are still vital parts of the process for turning the obtained visualizations into general constructions. A surprisingly simple upper bound follows from our constructions: $\mu_{5}(n) \leq \binom{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}{5} + \binom{\lceil n/2 \rceil}{5}$, and we conjecture it is optimal. In the second stage, we turn our focus to verifying this conjecture. Using MaxSAT, we confirm that $\mu_5(n)$ matches the conjectured values for $n \leq 16$, thereby improving both the existing lower and upper bounds for $n \in [12, 16]$. Our MaxSAT results rely on two mathematical theorems with pen-and-paper proofs, highlighting once again the rich interplay between automated and traditional mathematics.

Abstract:An important real-world optimization problem in manufacturing industry is to determine optimal workpiece setups for 4-axis NC machining. In this paper we reveal some interesting relations between this optimal workpiece setup problem and the two classic NP-hard problems in complexity theory (i.e, the vertex cover problem and the set cover problem). These relations immediately show the following results. First the optimal workpiece setup problem is NP-hard. Secondly, the greedy algorithm proposed in [Comput. Aided Des. 35 (2003) pp. 1269-1285] for the optimal workpiece setup problem has the performance ratio bounded by O(ln n-ln ln n+0.78), where n is the number of spherical polygons in the ground set.
Maximal planar graphs that embed as centers

Abstract:A maximal planar graph is a graph which can be embedded in the plane such that every face of the graph is a triangle. The center of a graph is the subgraph induced by the vertices of minimum eccentricity. We introduce the notion of quasi-eccentric vertices, and use this to characterize maximal planar graphs that are the center of some planar graph. We also present some easier to check only necessary / only sufficient conditions for planar and maximal planar graphs to be the center of a planar graph. Finally, we use the aforementioned characterization to prove that all maximal planar graphs of order at most 8 are the center of some planar graph -- and this bound is sharp.

Optimization Algorithms for Faster Computational Geometry.

Abstract:We study two fundamental problems in computational geometry: finding the maximum inscribed ball (MaxIB) inside a bounded polyhedron defined by $m$ hyperplanes, and the minimum enclosing ball (MinEB) of a set of $n$ points, both in $d$-dimensional space. We improve the running time of iterative algorithms on MaxIB from $\tilde{O}(m d \alpha^3 / \varepsilon^3)$ to $\tilde{O}(md + m \sqrt{d} \alpha / \varepsilon)$, a speed-up up to $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{d} \alpha^2 / \varepsilon^2)$, and MinEB from $\tilde{O}(n d / \sqrt{\varepsilon})$ to $\tilde{O}(nd + n \sqrt{d} / \sqrt{\varepsilon})$, a speed-up up to $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{d})$. Our improvements are based on a novel saddle-point optimization framework. We propose a new algorithm $\mathtt{L1L2SPSolver}$ for solving a class of regularized saddle-point problems, and apply a randomized Hadamard space rotation which is a technique borrowed from compressive sensing. Interestingly, the motivation of using Hadamard rotation solely comes from our optimization view but not the original geometry problem: indeed, it is not immediately clear why MaxIB or MinEB, as a geometric problem, should be easier to solve if we rotate the space by a unitary matrix. We hope that our optimization perspective sheds lights on solving other geometric problems as well.
Minimum Star Partitions of Simple Polygons in Polynomial Time

Abstract:We devise a polynomial-time algorithm for partitioning a simple polygon $P$ into a minimum number of star-shaped polygons. The question of whether such an algorithm exists has been open for more than four decades [Avis and Toussaint, Pattern Recognit., 1981] and it has been repeated frequently, for example in O'Rourke's famous book [Art Gallery Theorems and Algorithms, 1987]. In addition to its strong theoretical motivation, the problem is also motivated by practical domains such as CNC pocket milling, motion planning, and shape parameterization. The only previously known algorithm for a non-trivial special case is for $P$ being both monotone and rectilinear [Liu and Ntafos, Algorithmica, 1991]. For general polygons, an algorithm was only known for the restricted version in which Steiner points are disallowed [Keil, SIAM J. Comput., 1985], meaning that each corner of a piece in the partition must also be a corner of $P$. Interestingly, the solution size for the restricted version may be linear for instances where the unrestricted solution has constant size. The covering variant in which the pieces are star-shaped but allowed to overlap--known as the Art Gallery Problem--was recently shown to be $\exists\mathbb R$-complete and is thus likely not in NP [Abrahamsen, Adamaszek and Miltzow, STOC 2018 & J. ACM 2022]; this is in stark contrast to our result. Arguably the most related work to ours is the polynomial-time algorithm to partition a simple polygon into a minimum number of convex pieces by Chazelle and Dobkin~[STOC, 1979 & Comp. Geom., 1985].

Abstract:The ratio of volume to crossing number of a hyperbolic knot is known to be bounded above by the volume of a regular ideal octahedron, and a similar bound is conjectured for the knot determinant per crossing. We investigate a natural question motivated by these bounds: For which knots are these ratios nearly maximal? We show that many families of alternating knots and links simultaneously maximize both ratios.

Abstract:Consider a subset [1,2,...,n]x[1,2,...,n] of the plane integer lattice. Take any non self-intersecting n^2-gon built on it (straight angles are allowed). The square of a side length is a positive integer. It is thus natural to ask how large the sum of square lengths of such an n^2-gon can be. This maximal value is a new integer sequence, labeled by A358212 in OEIS. In this note we give the lower bound and conjecture that this in fact is the correct answer. We further investigate proper n^2-gons (straight angles are not allowed) and present analogous results. Both sequences (conjecturally) have a different growth size.
