Abstract:We describe a prototype of a new experimental GeoGebra command and tool, Discover, that analyzes geometric figures for salient patterns, properties, and theorems. This tool is a basic implementation of automated discovery in elementary planar geometry. The paper focuses on the mathematical background of the implementation, as well as methods to avoid combinatorial explosion when storing the interesting properties of a geometric figure.

Abstract:In our contribution we describe some on-going improvements concerning the Automated Reasoning Tools developed in GeoGebra Discovery, providing different examples of the performance of these new features. We describe the new ShowProof command, that outputs both the sequence of the different steps performed by GeoGebra Discovery to confirm a certain statement, as well as a number intending to grade the difficulty or interest of the assertion. The proposal of this assessment measure, involving the comparison of the expression of the thesis (or conclusion) as a combination of the hypotheses, will be developed.

New tools in GeoGebra offering novel opportunities to teach loci and envelopes

Abstract:GeoGebra is an open source mathematics education software tool being used in thousands of schools worldwide. Since version 4.2 (December 2012) it supports symbolic computation of locus equations as a result of joint effort of mathematicians and programmers helping the GeoGebra developer team. The joint work, based on former researches, started in 2010 and continued until present days, now enables fast locus and envelope computations even in a web browser in full HTML5 mode. Thus, classroom demonstrations and deeper investigations of dynamic analytical geometry are ready to use on tablets or smartphones as well. In our paper we consider some typical secondary school topics where investigating loci is a natural way of defining mathematical objects. We discuss the technical possibilities in GeoGebra by using the new commands LocusEquation and Envelope, showing through different examples how these commands can enrich the learning of mathematics. The covered school topics include definition of a parabola and other conics in different situations like synthetic definitions or points and curves associated with a triangle. Despite the fact that in most secondary schools, no other than quadratic curves are discussed, simple generalization of some exercises, and also every day problems, will smoothly introduce higher order algebraic curves. Thus our paper mentions the cubic curve "strophoid" as locus of the orthocenter of a triangle when one of the vertices moves on a circle. Also quartic "cardioid" and sextic "nephroid" can be of every day interest when investigating mathematics in, say, a coffee cup. We also focus on GeoGebra specific tips and tricks when constructing a geometric figure to be available for getting the locus equation. Among others, simplification and synthetization (via the intercept theorem) are mentioned.

Abstract:We introduce a system of software tools that can automatically prove or discover geometric inequalities. The system, called GeoGebra Discovery, consisting of an extended version of GeoGebra, a controller web service realgeom, and the computational tool Tarski (with the extensive help of the QEPCAD B system) successfully solves several non-trivial problems in Euclidean planar geometry related to inequalities.

Abstract:The application of an interdisciplinary approach in the educational process has the potential to place students in an environment where learning becomes an exciting experience, helping them discover and overcome difficulties together, promoting learning, and developing critical and analytical thinking. The article discusses the application of the "Room of Riddles" method in an interdisciplinary lesson combining visual arts and mathematics. A pedagogical practice is presented for integrating topics from the fields of visual arts and mathematics, establishing cross-curricular connections within the context of the "Room of Riddles." An interdisciplinary game is described, which combines tasks from different subject areas within one project. This approach allows students to apply their knowledge in solving a specific problem, recognize and build connections between individual disciplines, and reinforce their understanding.

Abstract:GeoGebra is an interactive geometry, algebra, statistics, and calculus application designed for teaching and learning math, science, and engineering. Its dynamic interface allows its users to accurately and interactively visualize their work, models, and results. GeoGebra employs the synthesis of three key features: modeling, visualization, and programming (MVP). Many studies have shown the positive effects of GeoGebra on the efficiency and effectiveness of learning and teaching topics related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In this study, we discuss how GeoGebra provides an environment for learning that is very interactive and collaborative between the learner and the instructor. We also show how integrating GeoGebra into the learning scheme can help improve the skills and knowledge of school and university students in numerous advanced mathematical courses, such as calculus, mathematical statistics, linear algebra, linear programming, computer-aided design, computer-aided geometric design, analytic and projective geometry, and graphical representation. Therefore, this study shows the effectiveness of GeoGebra and its MVP key features in science and engineering, particularly in topics related to mathematics. Each key feature of GeoGebra is thoroughly analyzed, and further analyses, along with how GeoGebra can be helpful in different topics, are discussed.

An Exploration of Middle School Mathematics Teachers’ Beliefs and Goals Regarding a Dynamic Tool in Mathematics Lessons: Case of GeoGebra

Abstract:Currently, teaching with technology has become crucial. This case study investigated the beliefs and goals of four middle school mathematics teachers regarding a dynamic mathematics software: GeoGebra. The participants of the study were four mathematics teachers working in public middle schools in Turkey. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews, lesson observations and perceived technology, pedagogy and content knowledge surveys. Data analysis revealed a consensus on GeoGebra’s usefulness in teaching units that link geometry and algebra. Most of the participants integrated GeoGebra to provide students with an explorative environment in which students were supported with feedback. Teachers’ goals of using the software were found to be providing visual representations, facilitating students’ learning, increasing students’ engagement, as well as decreasing their workload and saving time. Moreover, teachers listed several challenges such as classroom management and lesson planning. Despite the challenges they faced, teachers were willing to integrate the software into their lessons. Therefore, complementary workshops were seemed to be necessary to overcome these challenges. These workshops might aim at providing the necessary 21st-century competencies for mathematics teachers to integrate the software into their lessons effectively.

Abstract:GeoGebra is an open-source educational mathematics software tool, with millions of users worldwide. It has a number of features (integration of computer algebra, dynamic geometry, spreadsheet, etc.), primarily focused on facilitating student experiments, and not on formal reasoning. Since including automated deduction tools in GeoGebra could bring a whole new range of teaching and learning scenarios, and since automated theorem proving and discovery in geometry has reached a rather mature stage, we embarked on a project of incorporating and testing a number of different automated provers for geometry in GeoGebra. In this paper, we present the current achievements and status of this project, and discuss various relevant challenges that this project raises in the educational, mathematical and software contexts. We will describe, first, the recent and forthcoming changes demanded by our project, regarding the implementation and the user interface of GeoGebra. Then we present our vision of the educational scenarios that could be supported by automated reasoning features, and how teachers and students could benefit from the present work. In fact, current performance of GeoGebra, extended with automated deduction tools, is already very promising—many complex theorems can be proved in less than 1 second. Thus, we believe that many new and exciting ways of using GeoGebra in the classroom are on their way.

Abstract:In order to implement a STEAM approach including the use of technology, namely the use of interactive mathematics software GeoGebra, in mathematics classes, in the lusophone space, the materials presented here were conceived, to be implemented in a first phase among teachers. Later, with the necessary adaptations, these tasks will be applied to the students. The tasks deal with modeling situations, in two- and three-dimensional geometric problems, in order to apply GeoGebra software in its analysis to illustrate its capabilities. The different windows of this software are used, namely the 2D and 3D windows, CAS window, spreadsheet and extra two dimensional windows in order to study cutting planes in solids and some surfaces. The tasks are presented so that any user, regardless of the degree of knowledge they have of the software, can follow them, being supported in scripts with some indications of the tools and commands to use. Designed for the teaching and learning of Mathematics, from a STEAM approach, these tasks allow connections with other Sciences and the Arts, and allow the development of projects using and consolidating relevant mathematical contents. These tasks are part of the proposals of activities of the participants of the Training Courses for Trainers in GeoGebra for Portuguese Speaking Countries, which from 2019 have an impact on the STEAM approach. These courses are carried out with the high sponsorship of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI). Given the interest that the tasks have for the users of the Iberian space, as well as their dissemination at a global level, the materials initially developed in Portuguese language will be adapted for Spanish and English speakers.

Abstract:Our research aimed to investigate the potential learning benefits to young children of implementing digital interactive multimodal technologies that provide both visual and haptic experiences in elementary mathematics classrooms. We studied the ways in which fourth-grade students collaboratively create collective strategies for solving mathematical problems utilizing dynamic geometry software with multi-touch interfaces, a combination we call a multi-touch Dynamic Geometry Environment . We examine in-depth two case studies each illustrating how mathematical strategies, collaboration, and socially mediated metacognition emerge in the small groups of children while working on an activity using the Geometer's Sketchpad® on the iPad to make sense of an intuitive idea of covariation We found that children's interactions with their peers, the interviewer, and the mDGE favored the emergence of varied collaborative behaviors and socially mediated metacognitive processes that fostered the co-construction and development of mathematical strategies over a short period of time.

Abstract:In this paper we make some considerations about using a dynamic geometry software for teaching history of mathematica at university level. After a short introduction to the software GeoGebra, we discuss four activities. The first is an exploration of the menu of the tools menu following the first part of the first book of the elements of Euclid. The second is an activity about pentagons and pentagrams which aims at finding a more natural way of discovering their properties than that suggested by Euclid as an illustration of the method of synthesis and analysis. The third is an activity on circle inversion and its connection with polarity and the construction of the fourth harmonic point after three given point on a line. The activity continues with the reading of Poncelet's ideas about ideal secants of conics and how to use GeoGebra to make sense of them. The fourth activity shows how to use the possibility to move objects in GeoGebra to make sense of the geometric intuition behind Cremona and Hirst letters about the Bellavitis-Hirst inversion of a circle. We discuss the reasons why we believe that these kind of activities may help students to read and understand original writings in projective geometry and why we believe that they may be very effective in the training of prospective teachers of mathematics.

Abstract:The organization of the educational process, characterized by high performance, requires providing students with an opportunity to acquire deep subject knowledge, including mathematics. Digital technologies and resources are a tool aimed at optimizing the learning process. This paper discusses basic concepts and definitions from the field of digitalization and mathematical education. The author lists the features of the organization of the educational process using the GeoGebra dynamic environment, theoretical and practical aspects of the use of the environment in solving planimetric problems both in the classroom and in the homework of students. The characteristic of the methodological and technical stages of the development of the worksheet is given. The content of the work contains an example of a task in the format of a worksheet. The program of the electronic educational module Animation Mathematics developed by the author is analyzed, aimed at achieving the main educational results by students of the 8th grade in the section Similarity of triangles. The approbation of the results of the study was carried out on the basis of school in Orenburg and showed that the use of GeoGebra in teaching geometry expands the prospects for pedagogical activity, optimizes the work of teachers and leads to an increase in the effectiveness of training.

Abstract:Information and Community Technologies (ICT) are very present in our society nowadays and particularly in the educative field. In just two decades, we have passed from a learning based, in many cases, on the master lessons to one such that methodologies like the flipped classroom or the gamification are stronger than ever. Along this work, we have done a study to teachers and students with the main objective to compare the knowledge on digital tools, their use and their acceptation. We use WxMaxima and Geogebra in order to solve an exercise of \textit{Evaluación de Bachillerato para el Acceso a la Universidad} (EBAU) related with Geometry, comparing their ins and outs with the manual solution. Finally, we expose some conclusions and some possible research lines about digital tools, as well as a proposition of an introductory course on WxMaxima and Geogebra in order to teach the teachers.

Abstract:The use of GeoGebra in teaching geometric transformations was investigated in this study. GeoGebra is a math software available in over 100 plus languages, both online and offline. GeoGebra is a useful application to improve and enrich mathematics teaching and learning by allowing students to visualize mathematical concepts, which is extremely useful for mathematical experiments and discoveries at all educational levels, from elementary school to university. The theoretical referents used in this article are cognitive learning theory and Vygotsky's social learning theory. Twenty students (twelve boys and eight girls) in grade IX from a private school in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, were taught mathematics using a variety of specific instances of transformation highlighted in this study, including reflection, rotation, translation, and dilation. This research used a qualitative research method called a teaching experiment to examine the use of GeoGebra in eleven episodes. Students were aided in visualizing abstract concepts of change by using relevant images, photos, and animations of GeoGebra-created objects. The findings of a classroom experiment are GeoGebra is an easy-to-use application, GeoGebra allows for discovery learning, GeoGebra encourages collaborative learning, and GeoGebra to visualize geometric transformations. Likewise, GeoGebra aids in the teaching and comprehension of abstract transformation concepts. These findings show how students can develop into active knowledge builders when GeoGebra is used in mathematics classes. They also communicate with one another, keep track of the change process, and respect their instructors' authority in such classes. It is an important instructional tool that supports the educational system's transition from a teacher-centered to a learner-centered approach by complementing the traditional lecture method of teaching mathematics.

Abstract:During the course of “Fundamentals and applications of Science of Representation - Geometric drawing” (held at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Palermo) we successfully tested the adoption of informatics tools to enhance the comprehension and the critical analysis of complex figures in the geometrical space. The peculiarity in the teaching methodology was the adoption of interactive software products (Cabrì Géomètre and GeoGebra concerning dynamic and geometrical constructions; the well-known Rhinoceros plug-in, Grasshopper, about generating algorithms; Linceo regarding implementing the graphic display of complex solids in augmented reality). According to our experience within didactic laboratories, the adoption of ICT allowed us to stimulate and interest students towards subjects of descriptive and projective Geometry and the expected results are very satisfactory. In this paper we show some of the most interesting examples of geometric constructions created by students.
GeoLogic -- Graphical interactive theorem prover for Euclidean geometry

Abstract:Domain of mathematical logic in computers is dominated by automated theorem provers (ATP) and interactive theorem provers (ITP). Both of these are hard to access by AI from the human-imitation approach: ATPs often use human-unfriendly logical foundations while ITPs are meant for formalizing existing proofs rather than problem solving. We aim to create a simple human-friendly logical system for mathematical problem solving. We picked the case study of Euclidean geometry as it can be easily visualized, has simple logic, and yet potentially offers many high-school problems of various difficulty levels. To make the environment user friendly, we abandoned strict logic required by ITPs, allowing to infer topological facts from pictures. We present our system for Euclidean geometry, together with a graphical application GeoLogic, similar to GeoGebra, which allows users to interactively study and prove properties about the geometrical setup.

Abstract:In this article, we solve some of the geometry problems of the Náboj 2023 competition with the help of a computer, using examples that the software tool GeoGebra Discovery can calculate. In each case, the calculation requires symbolic computations. We analyze the difficulty of feeding the problem into the machine and set further goals to make the problems of this type of contests even more tractable in the future.

Abstract:As is known, Mathematica was primarily focused on mathematical applications in its initial versions. Over the years, not only a broad apparatus for solving mathematical problems has been created, but also a very interesting graphical way of interpreting work results. In recent releases, this program has focused on the use of mathematical apparatus in other scientific fields, including the use of these options in specific teaching. In this paper, the authors show the wide use of Mathematica in geography. Above all, they describe the connection of the program's core to external data sources that allow for unexpected links between hundreds of kinds of information and entities that are selected and studied in geography. Based on these relationships, outputs were made in known CDF files. This ensures the interactivity of all results. The teacher can, on the one hand, create interesting outcomes that are directly related to teaching and, on the other hand, are used by the student to find truly unconventional information. Along with the information, the student can also work with interesting mathematical results that are part of all the above files. For example, it can process the time series of temperature of a selected city, determine the demographic structure of the population of a given locality, compare selected regions with each other, have output data statistics processed, determine distances between locations in the world, including a specific measurement method, etc. Some of the already created files are presented in the paper and students' work with them is described. There is also a feedback between students and the creator of interactive files.

Abstract:The Beauty of Geometry, a touch-operation-based Dynamic Geometry Software (DGS) we develop for mathematics education by Objective-C, is introduced. The paper starts with the main contents of the Beauty of Geometry, including Intelligent drawing, Dynamic geometry, Geometric transformations, Animation, Measurement and Sharing, then we talk about the features of the system from three aspects, and consider a concrete example to show it how to make geometry learning be more simple and intuitive, finally we make a conclusion that the exploring of the touch-operation-based DGS is still in the initial stage, and propose what to do next to make the Beauty of Geometry smart and friendly.
