Abstract:In this note we are interested in a relevant generalized Nash equilibrium problem, which was proposed by Rosen in 1965. An existence result is established in the general setting of quasiconvexity, which is independent from the one given by Aussel and Dutta in 2008.

Abstract:We deal with the generalized Nash game proposed by Rosen, which is a game with strategy sets that are coupled across players through a shared constraint. A reduction to a classical game is shown, and as a consequence, Rosen's result can be deduced from the one given by Arrow and Debreu. We also establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to be a generalized Nash equilibrium employing the variational inequality approach. Finally, some existence results are given in the non-compact case under coerciveness conditions.

Abstract:Generalized games model interactions between a set of selfish decision makers, called players or agents, where both the objective function and the feasible decision set of each player may depend on strategies of the competitors. Such games arise, for example, when agents compete for a share of some common but limited resources. For instance, consider a set of vehicles sharing the road, set of radio channels competing for bandwidth, or set of companies servicing an economic market. They can each be modeled as players/agents in a game, competing for a portion of available resources, that is, road capacity, total bandwidth, or market share. As resources are limited, player choices are bound together by a coupling-capacity constraint. Essentially, in a generalized game, or one with coupling constraints, the set of available choices an agent has depends on the choices of other agents. Thus, a player cannot simply optimize their own objective function without considering the decisions of the others, even though this objective might not depend on him or her. The relevant equilibrium (namely, the solution concept) for noncooperative decision making with coupling constraints is called a generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE).
Generalized open-loop Nash equilibria in linear-quadratic difference games with coupled-affine inequality constraints

Abstract:In this note, we study a class of deterministic finite-horizon linear-quadratic difference games with coupled affine inequality constraints involving both state and control variables. We show that the necessary conditions for the existence of generalized open-loop Nash equilibria in this game class lead to two strongly coupled discrete-time linear complementarity systems. Subsequently, we derive sufficient conditions by establishing an equivalence between the solutions of these systems and convexity of the players' objective functions. These conditions are then reformulated as a solution to a linear complementarity problem, providing a numerical method to compute these equilibria. We illustrate our results using a network flow game with constraints.

Abstract:In this work, we focus on the concept of projected solutions for generalized Nash equilibrium problems. We present new existence results by considering sets of strategies that are not necessarily compact. The relationship between projected solutions and Nash equilibria is studied for the generalized Nash game proposed by Rosen. Finally, we demonstrate that every projected solution of a game is associated with a Nash equilibrium, but in a different game.

Abstract:This note qualifies some results in Cotrina and Flores-Bazán (2024) on the 'Finite intersection property'. We remind the essential role of this property for proving our results. In this note, we recall the statement of this property. We then specify the restrictive conditions that should be provided. An example proves the interest of this note revising some points in Cotrina and Flores-Bazán. Furthermore, it is showed that a class of generalized Nash equilibrium problems can be viewed as a particular case of a vector optimization problem, whose vector-valued function always possesses the Finite intersection property on its natural domain. Thus, the existence of a generalized Nash equilibrium will be a consequence of our Berge-type theorem and the Kakutani fixed point theorem, being it more general than those existing in recent literature, as shown by our examples.

Abstract:In this paper, I prove the existence of a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium for a large class of games with nonconvex strategy spaces. Specifically, if each player's strategies form a compact, connected Euclidean neighborhood retract and if all best-response correspondences are null-homotopic, then the game has a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. As an application, I show how this result can prove the fundamental theorem of algebra.

Abstract:In this article, we consider generalized Nash games where the associated constraint map is not necessarily self. The classical Nash equilibrium may not exist for such games and therefore we introduce the notion of best approximate solution for such games. We investigate the occurrence of best approximate solutions for such generalized Nash games consisting of infinitely many players in which each player regulates the strategy variable lying in a topological vector space. Based on the maximum theorem and a fixed point result for Kakutani factorizable maps, we derive the existence of best approximate solutions under the quasi-concavity and weak continuity assumption on players' objective functions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the occurrence of best approximate solutions for quasi-optimization problems.

Abstract:We consider an n -player non-cooperative game with continuous strategy sets. The strategy set of each player contains a set of stochastic linear constraints. We model the stochastic linear constraints of each player as a joint chance constraint. We assume that the row vectors of a matrix defining the stochastic constraints of each player are independent and each row vector follows a multivariate normal distribution. Under certain conditions, we show the existence of a Nash equilibrium for this game.

Abstract:We consider generalized Nash equilibrium problems (GNEPs) with non-convex strategy spaces and non-convex cost functions. This general class of games includes the important case of games with mixed-integer variables for which only a few results are known in the literature. We present a new approach to characterize equilibria via a convexification technique using the Nikaido-Isoda function. To any given instance of the GNEP, we construct a set of convexified instances and show that a feasible strategy profile is an equilibrium for the original instance if and only if it is an equilibrium for any convexified instance and the convexified cost functions coincide with the initial ones. We develop this convexification approach along three dimensions: We first show that for quasi-linear models, where a convexified instance exists in which for fixed strategies of the opponent players, the cost function of every player is linear and the respective strategy space is polyhedral, the convexification reduces the GNEP to a standard (non-linear) optimization problem. Secondly, we derive two complete characterizations of those GNEPs for which the convexification leads to a jointly constrained or a jointly convex GNEP, respectively. These characterizations require new concepts related to the interplay of the convex hull operator applied to restricted subsets of feasible strategies and may be interesting on their own. Note that this characterization is also computationally relevant as jointly convex GNEPs have been extensively studied in the literature. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our results by presenting a numerical study regarding the computation of equilibria for three classes of GNEPs related to integral network flows and discrete market equilibria.

Abstract:In this article, we present an inexact Newton method to solve generalized Nash equilibrium problems (GNEPs). Two types of GNEPs are studied: player convex and jointly convex. We reformulate the GNEP into an unconstrained optimization problem using a complementarity function and solve it by the proposed method. It is found that the proposed numerical scheme has the global convergence property for both types of GNEPs. The strong BD-regularity assumption for the reformulated system of GNEP plays a crucial role in global convergence. In fact, the strong BD-regularity assumption and a suitable choice of a forcing sequence expedite the inexact Newton method to Q -quadratic convergence. The efficiency of the proposed numerical scheme is shown for a collection of problems, including the realistic internet switching problem, where selfish users generate traffic. A comparison of the proposed method with the existing semi-smooth Newton method II for GNEP is provided, which indicates that the proposed scheme is more efficient.

Mixed Strategy Constraints in Continuous Games

Abstract:Equilibrium problems representing interaction in physical environments typically require continuous strategies which satisfy opponent-dependent constraints, such as those modeling collision avoidance. However, as with finite games, mixed strategies are often desired, both from an equilibrium existence perspective as well as a competitive perspective. To that end, this work investigates a chance-constraint-based approach to coupled constraints in generalized Nash equilibrium problems which are solved over pure strategies and mixing weights simultaneously. We motivate these constraints in a discrete setting, placing them on tensor games ($n$-player bimatrix games) as a justifiable approach to handling the probabilistic nature of mixing. Then, we describe a numerical solution method for these chance constrained tensor games with simultaneous pure strategy optimization. Finally, using a modified pursuit-evasion game as a motivating examples, we demonstrate the actual behavior of this solution method in terms of its fidelity, parameter sensitivity, and efficiency.

A Coupled Optimization Framework for Correlated Equilibria in Normal-Form Game

Abstract:In competitive multi-player interactions, simultaneous optimality is a key requirement for establishing strategic equilibria. This property is explicit when the game-theoretic equilibrium is the simultaneously optimal solution of coupled optimization problems. However, no such optimization problems exist for the correlated equilibrium, a strategic equilibrium where the players can correlate their actions. We address the lack of a coupled optimization framework for the correlated equilibrium by introducing an {unnormalized game} -- an extension of normal-form games in which the player strategies are lifted to unnormalized measures over the joint actions. We show that the set of fully mixed generalized Nash equilibria of this unnormalized game is a subset of the correlated equilibrium of the normal-form game. Furthermore, we introduce an entropy regularization to the unnormalized game and prove that the entropy-regularized generalized Nash equilibrium is a sub-optimal correlated equilibrium of the normal form game where the degree of sub-optimality depends on the magnitude of regularization. We prove that the entropy-regularized unnormalized game has a closed-form solution, and empirically verify its computational efficacy at approximating the correlated equilibrium of normal-form games.

Distributed Nash Equilibrium Seeking for Non-Cooperative Games Subject to Coupled Inequality Constraints: A Time-Scale Separation Approach

Abstract:This paper investigates the Nash equilibrium seeking problem for non-cooperative games subject to a coupled inequality constraint. Both the local cost functions and the constrained function are mutually coupled by the decision variables of players. A distributed seeking algorithm is proposed via local information interaction. First, a distributed observer with the projection property is introduced for each player to estimate the decision variables of all the other players. By using these estimations, a seeking algorithm with the projection property is then synthesized. The stability analysis is based on a time-scale separation approach. In particular, we first show that the fast dynamics composed by the distributed observer with an appropriate parameter guarantees that the estimation errors converge to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the origin in finite time and maintain within it afterwards. Based on this result, we further show that the slow dynamics composed by the seeking algorithm achieves the convergence of the strategy profile to a neighborhood of the generalized Nash equilibrium of interest. an illustrative example is provided to verify the theoretical results.
On local uniqueness of normalized Nash equilibria

Abstract:For generalized Nash equilibrium problems (GNEP) with shared constraints we focus on the notion of normalized Nash equilibrium in the nonconvex setting. The property of nondegeneracy for normalized Nash equilibria is introduced. Nondegeneracy refers to GNEP-tailored versions of linear independence constraint qualification, strict complementarity and second-order regularity. Surprisingly enough, nondegeneracy of normalized Nash equilibrium does not prevent from degeneracies at the individual players' level. We show that generically all normalized Nash equilibria are nondegenerate. Moreover, nondegeneracy turns out to be a sufficient condition for the local uniqueness of normalized Nash equilibria. We emphasize that even in the convex setting the proposed notion of nondegeneracy differs from the sufficient condition for (global) uniqueness of normalized Nash equilibria, which is known from the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we present results that use Himmelberg's fixed point theorem to highlight substantive trade-offs between compactness, continuity and convexity postulates in the setting of a constrained generalized game. The primary contribution is a focus on weakening the compactness assumption on the action sets and on two versions of the continuity assumption encapsulated as the continuous inclusion property (CIP). We show that the results are invariant to cardinality assumptions on the set of agents and on the dimension of the space in which the action sets are situated. This yields as special cases recent results in both mathematical economics and applied mathematics, and underscores the development of a rich and useful theory in bringing these two registers and two communities together.

Abstract:We consider generalized Nash equilibrium problems (GNEPs) with linear coupling constraints affected by both local (i.e., agent-wise) and global (i.e., shared resources) disturbances taking values in polyhedral uncertainty sets. By making use of traditional tools borrowed from robust optimization, for this class of problems we derive a tractable, finite-dimensional reformulation leading to a deterministic ''extended game'', and we show that this latter still amounts to a GNEP featuring generalized Nash equilibria ''in the worst-case''. We then design a fully-distributed, accelerated algorithm based on monotone operator theory, which enjoys convergence towards a Nash equilibrium of the original, uncertain game under weak structural assumptions. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed scheme through numerical simulations

A Shared-Constraint Approach to Multi-leader Multi-follower Games

Abstract:Multi-leader multi-follower games are a class of hierarchical games in which a collection of leaders compete in a Nash game constrained by the equilibrium conditions of another Nash game amongst the followers. The resulting equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints is complicated by nonconvex agent problems and therefore providing tractable conditions for existence of global or even local equilibria for it has proved challenging. Consequently, much of the extant research on this topic is either model specific or relies on weaker notions of equilibria. We consider a modified formulation in which every leader is cognizant of the equilibrium constraints of all leaders. Equilibria of this modified game contain the equilibria, if any, of the original game. The new formulation has a constraint structure called shared constraints, and our main result shows that if the leader objectives admit a potential function, the global minimizers of the potential function over the shared constraint are equilibria of the modified formulation. We provide another existence result using fixed point theory that does not require potentiality. Additionally, local minima, B-stationary, and strong-stationary points of this minimization are shown to be local Nash equilibria, Nash B-stationary, and Nash strong-stationary points of the corresponding multi-leader multi-follower game. We demonstrate the relationship between variational equilibria associated with this modified shared-constraint game and equilibria of the original game from the standpoint of the multiplier sets and show how equilibria of the original formulation may be recovered. We note through several examples that such potential multi-leader multi-follower games capture a breadth of application problems of interest and demonstrate our findings on a multi-leader multi-follower Cournot game.

Abstract:The generalized Nash equilibrium problem (GNEP) is an extension of the Nash equilibrium problem (NEP), which allows the strategies and the objective function of each player to depend on the decision variables of all other players. In this paper, we consider a GNEP where the objective and constraint functions are not necessarily differentiable or convex. By proposing an alternative approach based on the equivalence with a single constrained optimization problem, we then present new sharp KKT-type necessary optimality conditions for a solution of this problem under a weak constraint qualification. We also offer an example to show that these conditions are more efficient for such problems than the previous ones. Further under weak convexity assumptions, we prove that these necessary conditions are also sufficient for optimality. Finally, we extend the definitions of some constraint qualifications from classical optimization to GNEP and study their interrelations. Throughout the paper, several examples are provided to illustrate the results.
