Abstract:I describe what is currently known, for $d \geq 5$, about the rational homotopy type of the group of diffeomorphisms of the $d$-disc relative to its boundary, and the closely related group of homeomorphisms of $d$-dimensional Euclidean space.

Abstract:We prove that the groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are boundedly acyclic, in all regularities. This is the first full computation of the bounded cohomology of a transformation group that is not compactly supported, and it implies that many characteristic classes of flat $\mathbb{R}^n$- and $S^n$-bundles are unbounded. We obtain the same result for the group of homeomorphisms of the disc that restrict to the identity on the boundary, and for the homeomorphism group of the non-compact Cantor set. In the appendix, Alexander Kupers proves a controlled version of the annulus theorem which we use to study the bounded cohomology of the homeomorphism group of the discs.

Abstract:We study the Disc-structure space $S^{\rm Disc}_\partial(M)$ of a compact smooth manifold $M$. Informally speaking, this space measures the difference between $M$, together with its diffeomorphisms, and the diagram of ordered framed configuration spaces of $M$ with point-forgetting and point-splitting maps between them, together with its derived automorphisms. As the main results, we show that in high dimensions, the Disc-structure space a) only depends on the tangential 2-type of $M$, b) is an infinite loop space, and c) is nontrivial as long as $M$ is spin. The proofs involve intermediate results that may be of independent interest, including an enhancement of embedding calculus to the level of bordism categories, results on the behaviour of derived mapping spaces between operads under rationalisation, and an answer to a question of Dwyer and Hess in that we show that the map ${\rm BTop}(d)\to {\rm BAut}(E_d)$ is an equivalence if and only if $d$ is at most $2$.

Diffeomorphisms of the 4-sphere, Cerf theory and Montesinos twins

Abstract:One way to better understand the smooth mapping class group of the 4-sphere would be to give a list of generators in the form of explicit diffeomorphisms supported in neighborhoods of submanifolds, in analogy with Dehn twists on surfaces. As a step in this direction, we describe a surjective homomorphism from a group associated to loops of 2-spheres in $S^2 \times S^2$'s onto this smooth mapping class group, discuss two natural and in some sense complementary subgroups of the domain of this homomomorphism, show that one is in the kernel, and give generators as above for the image of the other. These generators are described as twists along Montesinos twins, i.e. pairs of embedded 2-spheres in the 4-sphere intersecting transversely at two points.

Abstract:By making use of Halperin's local systems over simplicial sets and the model structure of the category of diffeological spaces due to Kihara, we introduce a framework of rational homotopy theory for such smooth spaces with arbitrary fundamental groups. As a consequence, we have an equivalence between the homotopy categories of fibrewise rational diffeological spaces and an algebraic category of minimal local systems elaborated by Gómez-Tato, Halperin and Tanré. In the latter half of this article, a spectral sequence converging to the singular de Rham cohomology of a diffeological adjunction space is constructed with the pullback of relevant local systems. In case of a stratifold obtained by attaching manifolds, the spectral sequence converges to the Souriau--de Rham cohomology algebra of the diffeological space. By using the pullback construction, we also discuss a local system model for a topological homotopy pushout.

Abstract:We investigate the homotopy groups of the configuration space of hard discs inside a unit disc, just beyond the first critical radius. In the four-disc case, we find a non-contractible `thick braid' (loop in the configuration space), which contracts in the ordered configuration space of points when we replace each disc by its centre. For $n\ge 5$ discs, we find a non-contractible $(n-3)$-sphere, and we explore the persistence of this homotopy class when the ambient unit disc is deformed. For sufficiently large $n$, we demonstrate the existence of non-trivial $\pi_k$-classes with $k<n-3$ beyond higher critical radii.

Characterisation of homotopy ribbon discs

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be either the infinite cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}$ or the Baumslag-Solitar group $\mathbb{Z} \ltimes \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. Let $K$ be a slice knot admitting a slice disc $D$ in the 4-ball whose exterior has fundamental group $\Gamma$. We classify the $\Gamma$-homotopy ribbon slice discs for $K$ up to topological ambient isotopy rel. boundary. In the infinite cyclic case, there is a unique equivalence class of such slice discs. When $\Gamma$ is the Baumslag-Solitar group, there are at most two equivalence classes of $\Gamma$-homotopy ribbon discs, and at most one such slice disc for each lagrangian of the Blanchfield pairing of $K$.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the vanishing of the bounded cohomology of $\text{Diff}^r_+(S^n)$ with real coefficients when $n\geq 4$ and $1\leq r\leq \infty$. This answers the question raised in \cite{FNS24} for $\geq 4$ dimensional spheres.

Abstract:In this work we relate the known results about the homotopy type of classifying spaces for smooth foliations, with the homology and cohomology of the discrete group of diffeomorphisms of a smooth compact connected oriented manifold. The Mather-Thurston Theorem forms a bridge between the results on the homotopy types of classifying spaces and the various homology and cohomology groups that are studied. We introduce the algebraic K-theory of a manifold M that is derived from the discrete group of diffeomorphisms of M, and observe that the calculations of homotopy groups in this work are about these K-theory groups. We include a variety of remarks and open problems related to the study of the diffeomorphism groups and their homological invariants using the Mather-Thurston Theorem.

The Diffeological Čech-de Rham Obstruction

Abstract:Using higher topos theory, we explore the obstruction to the Čech-de Rham map being an isomorphism in each degree for diffeological spaces. In degree 1, we obtain an exact sequence which interprets Iglesias-Zemmour's construction from "Čech-de Rham Bicomplex in Diffeology" in $\infty$-stack cohomology. We obtain new exact sequences in all higher degrees. These exact sequences are constructed using homotopy pullback diagrams that include the $\infty$-stack classifying higher $\mathbb{R}$-bundle gerbes with connection. We also obtain a conceptual and succinct proof that the $\infty$-stack cohomology of the irrational torus $T_K$ for $K \subset \mathbb{R}$ a diffeologically discrete subgroup, agrees with the group cohomology of $K$ with values in $\mathbb{R}$. Finally, for a Lie group $G$, we prove that the groupoid of diffeological principal $G$-bundles with connection one obtains via higher topos theory is equivalent to the groupoid of diffeological principal $G$-bundles with connection defined in Waldorf's "Transgression to Loop Spaces and its Inverse, I".

Controllability and diffeomorphism groups on manifolds with boundary

Abstract:In this article we consider diffeomorphism groups of manifolds with smooth boundary. We show that the diffeomorphism groups of the manifold and its boundary fit into a short exact sequence which admits local sections. In other words, they form an infinite-dimensional fibre bundle. Manifolds with boundary are of interest in numerical analysis and with a view towards applications in machine learning we establish controllability results for families of vector fields. This generalises older results due to Agrachev and Caponigro in the boundary-less case. Our results show in particular that the diffeomorphism group of a manifold with smooth boundary is generated by the image of the exponential map.

On the smoothing theory delooping of disc diffeomorphism and embedding spaces

Abstract:The celebrated Morlet-Burghelea-Lashof-Kirby-Siebenmann smoothing theory theorem states that the group $\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^n)$ of diffeomorphisms of a disc $D^n$ relative to the boundary is equivalent to $\Omega^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for any $n\geq 1$ and to $\Omega^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for $n\neq 4$. We revise smoothing theory results to show that the delooping generalizes to different versions of disc smooth embedding spaces relative to the boundary, namely the usual embeddings, those modulo immersions, and framed embeddings. The latter spaces deloop as $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)\simeq\Omega^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{PL}_{n,m}\right)\simeq \Omega^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{TOP}_{n,m}\right)$ for any $n\geq m\geq 1$ ($n\neq 4$ for the second equivalence), where the left-hand side in the case $n-m=2$ or $(n,m)=(4,3)$ should be replaced by the union of the path-components of $\mathrm{PL}$-trivial knots (framing being disregarded). Moreover, we show that for $n\neq 4$, the delooping is compatible with the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action. We use this delooping to combine the Hatcher $\mathrm{O}_{m+1}$-action and the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action into a framed little discs operad $E_{m+1}^{\mathrm{O}_{m+1}}$-action on $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)$.

Abstract:This is a long summary of the author's book "D-manifolds and d-orbifolds: a theory of derived differential geometry", available at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/~joyce/dmanifolds.html" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> . A shorter survey paper on the book, focussing on d-manifolds without boundary, is <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1206.4207" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1206.4207">arXiv:1206.4207</a>, and readers just wanting a general overview are advised to start there. We introduce a 2-category dMan of "d-manifolds", new geometric objects which are 'derived' smooth manifolds, in the sense of the 'derived algebraic geometry' of Toen and Lurie. They are a 2-category truncation of Spivak's 'derived manifolds' (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0810.5174" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0810.5174">arXiv:0810.5174</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1212.1153" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1212.1153">arXiv:1212.1153</a>). The category of manifolds Man embeds in dMan as a full (2-)subcategory. Quadratic differentials and function theory on Riemann surfaces

Abstract:A finite-area holomorphic quadratic differentials on an arbitrary Riemann surface $X=\mathbb{H}/\Gamma$ is uniquely determined by its horizontal measured foliation. By extending our prior result for $\Gamma$ of the first kind to arbitrary Fuchsian group $\Gamma$, we obtain that a measured foliation $\mathcal{F}$ is realized by the horizontal foliation of a finite-area holomorphic quadratic differential on $X$ if and only if $\mathcal{F}$ has finite Dirichlet integral. We determine the image of this correspondence when the infinite Riemann surface has bounded geometry -- an extension of the realization result of Hubbard and Masur for compact surfaces. A corollary is that a planar surface $X$ with bounded pants decomposition and with (at most) countably many ends is parabolic, i.e., does not support Green's function, in notation $X\in O_G$ where $G$ is Green's function. The class of harmonic functions with finite Dirichlet integral is denoted by $HD$. We give a geometric proof that the class $O_{HD}$ of the Riemann surfaces (that do not support non-constant $HD$-functions) is invariant under quasiconformal maps. Lyons proved that the $O_{HB}$ class (surfaces that do not support non-constant bounded harmonic functions) is not invariant under quasiconformal maps, and it is well-known that the $O_G$ class is invariant. Therefore, the noninvariant class $O_{HB}$ is between two invariant classes: $O_G\subset O_{HB}\subset O_{HD}$.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact orientable non-Haken 3-manifold modeled on the Thurston geometry $\text{Nil}$. We show that the diffeomorphism group $\text{Diff}(X)$ deformation retracts to the isometry group $\text{Isom}(X)$. Combining this with earlier work by many authors, this completes the determination the homotopy type of $\text{Diff}(X)$ for any compact, orientable, prime 3-manifold $X$.

Abstract:For a non-compact n-manifold M let H(M) denote the group of homeomorphisms of M endowed with the Whitney topology and H_c(M) the subgroup of H(M) consisting of homeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the group H_c(M) is locally contractible and the identity component H_0(M) of H(M) is an open normal subgroup in H_c(M). This induces the topological factorization H_c(M) \approx H_0(M) \times \M_c(M) for the mapping class group \M_c(M) = H_c(M)/H_0(M) with the discrete topology. Furthermore, for any non-compact surface M, the pair (H(M), H_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w l_2,\cbox^w l_2) at the identity id_M of M. Thus the group H_c(M) is an (l_2 \times R^\infty)-manifold. We also study topological properties of the group D(M) of diffeomorphisms of a non-compact smooth n-manifold M endowed with the Whitney C^\infty-topology and the subgroup D_c(M) of D(M) consisting of all diffeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the pair (D(M),D_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w l_2, \cbox^w l_2) at the identity id_M of M. Hence the group D_c(M) is a topological (l_2 \times R^\infty)-manifold for any dimension n.
