Abstract:In this note we construct new nonplanar ancient (in fact, eternal) solutions to the curve shortening flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, built out of translating grim reapers laying in perpendicular planes.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the rigidity of ancient solutions of the mean curvature flow with arbitrary codimension in space forms. We first prove that under certain sharp asymptotic pointwise curvature pinching condition the ancient solution in a sphere is either a shrinking spherical cap or a totally geodesic sphere. Then we show that under certain pointwise curvature pinching condition the ancient solution in a hyperbolic space is a family of shrinking spheres. We also obtain a rigidity result for ancient solutions in a nonnegatively curved space form under an asymptotic integral curvature pinching condition.

Abstract:We construct a translating solution to anisotropic curve shortening flow and show that for a given anisotropic factor $g:S^1\to\mathbb{R}_+$, and a given direction and speed, this translator is unique. We then construct an ancient compact solution to anisotropic curve shortening flow, and show that this solution, along with the appropriate translating solution, are the unique solutions to anisotropic curve shortening flow that lie in a slab of a given width and no smaller.

Ancient curve shortening flow in the disc with mixed boundary condition

Abstract:Given any non-central interior point $o$ of the unit disc $D$, the diameter $L$ through $o$ is the union of two linear arcs emanating from $o$ which meet $\partial D$ orthogonally, the shorter of them stable and the longer unstable (under these boundary conditions). In each of the two half discs bounded by $L$, we construct a convex eternal solution to curve shortening flow which fixes $o$ and meets $\partial D$ orthogonally, and evolves out of the unstable critical arc at $t=-\infty$ and into the stable one at $t=+\infty$. We then prove that these two (congruent) solutions are the only non-flat convex ancient solutions to the curve shortening flow satisfying the specified boundary conditions. We obtain analogous conclusions in the "degenerate" case $o\in\partial D$ as well, although in this case the solution contracts to the point $o$ at a finite time with asymptotic shape that of a half Grim Reaper, thus providing an interesting example for which an embedded flow develops a collapsing singularity.

Abstract:We consider a motion of non-closed planar curves with infinite length. The motion is governed by a steepest descent flow for the geometric functional which consists of the sum of the length functional and the total squared curvature. We call the flow shortening-straightening flow. In this paper, first we prove a long time existence result for the shortening-straightening flow for non-closed planar curves with infinite length. Then we show that the solution converges to a stationary solution as time goes to infinity. Moreover we give a classification of the stationary solution.

Abstract:We construct a class of compact ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow in Euclidean space with high codimension. In particular, we construct higher codimensional ancient curve shortening flows. Moreover, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of these solutions. Abstract:We revisit the well-known Curve Shortening Flow for immersed curves in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. We exploit a fundamental structure of the problem to derive a new global construction of a solution, that is, a construction that is valid for all times and is insensitive to singularities. The construction is characterized by discretization in time and the approximant, while still exhibiting the possibile formation of finitely many singularities at a finite set of singular times, exists globally and is well behaved and simpler to analyze than a solution of the CSF. A solution of the latter is obtained in the limit. Estimates for a natural (geometric) norm involving length and total absolute curvature allow passage to the limit. Many classical qualitative results about the flow can be recovered by exploiting the simplicity of the approximant and new ones can be proved. The construction also suggests a numerical procedure for the computation of the flow which proves very effective as demonstrated by a series of numerical experiments scattered throughout the paper.

Abstract:We study the curve shortening flow on Riemann surfaces with finitely many conformal conical singularities. If the initial curve is passing through the singular points, then the evolution is governed by a degenerate quasilinear parabolic equation. In this case, we establish short time existence, uniqueness, and regularity of the flow. We also show that the evolving curves stay fixed at the singular points of the surface and obtain some contracting and convergence results.

Abstract:We consider an embedded convex ancient solution $\Gamma_t$ to the curve shortening flow in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that there are only two possibilities: the family $\Gamma_t$ is either the family of contracting circles, which is a type I ancient solution, or the family of evolving Angenent ovals, which correspond to a type II ancient solution to the curve shortening flow. We also give a necessary and sufficient curvature condition for an embedded, closed ancient solution to the curve shortening flow to be convex.

Abstract:We construct an $I$-family of ancient graphical mean curvature flows over a minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of finite total curvature with the Morse index $I$ by establishing exponentially fast convergence in terms of $|x|^2-t$. As a corollary, we show that these ancient flows have finite total curvature and finite mass drop. Moreover, one family of these flows is mean convex by a pointwise estimate.

Abstract:We introduce a novel formulation for the evolution of parametric curves by anisotropic curve shortening flow in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\geq2$. The reformulation hinges on a suitable manipulation of the parameterization's tangential velocity, leading to a strictly parabolic differential equation. Moreover, the derived equation is in divergence form, giving rise to a natural variational numerical method. For a fully discrete finite element approximation based on piecewise linear elements we prove optimal error estimates. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical results and demonstrate the practicality of the method.

Abstract:In this short article, we prove the existence of ancient solutions of the mean curvature flow that for t -> 0 collapse to a round point, but for t -> -infinity become more and more oval: near the center they have asymptotic shrinkers modeled on round cylinders S^j x R^n-j and near the tips they have asymptotic translators modeled on Bowl^j+1 x R^n-j-1. We also give a characterization of the round shrinking sphere among ancient alpha-Andrews flows. Our proofs are based on the recent estimates of Haslhofer-Kleiner.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that an ancient smooth curve shortening flow with finite-entropy embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$ has a unique tangent flow at infinity. To this end, we show that its rescaled flows backwardly converge to a line with multiplity $m\geq 3$ exponentially fast in any compact region, unless the flow is a shrinking circle, a static line, a paper clip, or a translating grim reaper. In addition, we figure out the exact numbers of tips, vertices, and inflection points of the curves at negative enough time. Moreover, the exponential growth rate of graphical radius and the convergence of vertex regions to grim reaper curves will be shown.

Abstract:Bounds of total curvature and entropy are two common conditions placed on mean curvature flows. We show that these two hypotheses are equivalent for the class of ancient complete embedded smooth planar curve shortening flows, which are one-dimensional mean curvature flows. As an application, we give a short proof of the uniqueness of tangent flow at infinity of an ancient smooth complete non-compact curve shortening flow with finite entropy embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Abstract:We consider curve shortening flow of arbitrary codimension in an Euclidean background. We show that, close to a singularity, the flow is asymptotically planar, paralleling Altschuler's work in the case of space curves, and analyse the blow-up limits of the flow. Using these results, we then prove that the curve shortening flow of initial curves with an entropy bound converges to a round point in finite time.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the evolution problem for planar curves with singularities. Motivated by the inverse curvature flow introduced by Li and Wang (Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 62 (2023), No. 135), we intend to consider the area-preserving and length-preserving inverse curvature flow with nonlocal term for $\ell$-convex Legendre curves. For the area-preserving flow, an $\ell$-convex Legendre curve %of with initial algebraic area $A_0>0$ evolves to a circle of radius $\sqrt{\frac{A_0}{\pi}}$. For the length-preserving flow, an $\ell$-convex Legendre curve %of with initial algebraic length $L_0$ evolves to a circle of radius $\frac{L_0}{2\pi}$. As the by-product, we obtain some geometric inequalities for $\ell$-convex Legendre curves through the length-preserving flow.
