Abstract:The composites of polypyrrole/manganese dioxide/polypropylene fibrous films (PPy/MnO2/PPF) have been prepared in situ through chemical oxidation polymerization by using the mixture of FeCl3·6H2O and MnO2 adsorbed on PPF as oxidant in the atmosphere of pyrrole vapor at room temperature. The morphologies and structures of the composites are investigated by using scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The properties of the capacitor cells assembled by the composites of PPy/MnO2/PPF are evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The results reveal that the morphologies, conductivities and capacitance performance of the composites are influenced strongly by the content of MnO2 in the solution of oxidant. The capacitors assembled by PPy/MnO2/PPF exhibit the property of quick charge/discharge, and the highest specific capacitance of about 110Fg−1 is obtained when the PPy/MnO2 content in the composite is about 17.4%.

Abstract:Graphene/polypyrrole (PPy) composite film was prepared by simple electrodeposition of graphite oxide and pyrrole mixture under acid conditions. The morphology, composition, and electronic structure of the composites were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the fast redox property of PPy and high conductivity of graphene, the prepared composite film could be constructed to a supercapacitor device directly. The electrochemical performances of the supercapacitor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The composites showed better electrochemical performances than the individual components. A high specific capacitance of 335 F·g $^{-1}$ was obtained with the capacitance retention of 85% after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A·g$^{-1}$ by charge–discharge analysis between 0 and +1.0 V. The enhanced specific capacitance and cycling life implied a synergistic effect of graphene and PPy.
Polypyrrole encapsulation-protected porous multishelled Co3O4 hollow microspheres for advanced all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors with boosted reaction kinetics and stability.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have shown great potential in high-performance supercapacitors (SCs) because of their high theoretical capacities, low cost and simple preparation process. However, considerable challenges still remain in simultaneously improving their electrical conductivity, reaction kinetics and stability. Herein, we deliberately designed a polypyrrole encapsulation-protected porous multishelled Co3O4 hollow microspheres (pMS-Co3O4/PPy) composite via a modified carbon self-templating method and in situ oxidative polymerization route. The unique porous multishelled structure of the pMS-Co3O4 hollow microspheres assembled by interconnected Co3O4 nanoparticles can provide sufficient active sites, shorted ion diffusion paths and efficiently alleviate the structural strain. Meanwhile, the PPy encapsulation-protected nanolayers significantly improve their electrical conductivity, contribute pseudocapacitance and protect Co3O4 nanoparticles from structural pulverization-chemical dissolution into electrolyte. The prepared pMS-Co3O4/PPy electrodes exhibited a high specific capacitance (1292.2 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)), excellent rate capability (1205.8 F g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and cycle stability (ultrahigh capacitance retention of 91.5% for 5000 cycles), which has rarely been achieved in previously reported Co3O4-based electrodes. Furthermore, the assembled all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors (pMS-Co3O4/PPy//AC) delivered a high energy density of 40.2 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 761.7 W kg(-1) and superior stability with a capacitance retention of 90.6% for 5000 cycles. This study offers an effective nanostructure design strategy to solve the issues of TMOs and develop high-performance energy storage systems.

Abstract:Electrodes for supercapacitors made from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are still hindered by electron transfer properties. Therefore, an electrode composite material Ni-MOF@PPy was synthesized from a Ni-based metal–organic framework (Ni-MOF) doped with poly-pyrrole (PPy) using a simple chemical oxidation method to improve its electron transfer property. After introducing the electrochemically active substance K 4 Fe(CN) 6 into the electrolyte, the composite material had a specific capacitance of 1815.4 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Ni-MOF@PPy and active carbon (AC) as the positive and negative electrodes have been used, respectively, to assemble asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) in the KOH and K 4 Fe(CN) 6 mixed electrolyte. This novel Ni-MOF@PPy//AC ASC energy storage device can provide 38.5 W h kg −1 energy density, 7001 W kg −1 power density, and 90.2% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles. Therefore, Ni-MOF@PPy//AC ASC is an excellent energy storage device with practical and economic value. The synergistic effect strategy proposed in this work can be easily applied to develop other MOFs with unique crystal structures as well as other redox active additives, providing new avenues and research ideas for exploring novel energy storage devices.

Abstract:As a pseudocapacitive electrode materials for supercapacitor, Polypyrrole (PPy) exhibit excellent theoretical specific capacitance. However, it suffers from a poor cycling stability due to structural instability during charge-discharge process. In this work, a novel and facile hydrothermal method has been developed for the intercalation composites of PPy/MoS2 with multilayer three-dimensional structure. The report result shows that the as-prepared electrode possess a outstanding electrochemical properties with significantly specific capacitance of 895.6Fg−1 at current density of 1Ag−1, higher energy density (3.774Whkg−1) at power density of 252.8kWkg−1, furthermore, it also achieve remarkable cycling stability (~98% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles) which is attributed to the synergistic effect of PPy and MoS2. This synthetic strategy integrates performance enables the multilayer PPy/MoS2 composites to be a promising electrode for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Pseudocapacitive iron oxide materials own high theoretical capacitance as desirable anode materials for electrochemical energy storage. The poor electrical conductivity and sluggish ion diffusion kinetics of iron oxides are the two main obstacles that hinder their practical application. In this work, a simple and fast electrodeposition method to fabricate composite film of polypyrrole (PPy) and hybrid iron oxide (FeOx) on a 3D exfoliated graphite (EG) current collector is demonstrated. The experimental results suggest that the valence state of Fe in FeOx decreases obviously during the concurrent electrodeposition, which effectively regulates the electronic transmission and formed heterostructured PPy-FeOx iron oxide. The hybrid iron oxide (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) phase interface synergistically improves the pseudocapacitance of the composite film. The as-prepared PPy-FeOx composite film exhibits a high areal capacitance of 2.0 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2 and ultrahigh cycling stability (105.6% capacitance retention after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles). The assembled asymmetric capacitor (ASC) based on PPy-FeOx can deliver a volumetric energy density of 3.44 mWh cm−3 at a power density of 6.72 mW cm−3. This work offers a new strategy for the concurrent electrodeposition of conducting polymers and metal oxides with strong interactions, leading to great development in energy storage applications.

Abstract:FeOOH-polypyrrole-multiwalled carbon nanotube (FeOOH-PPy-MWCNT) ternary nanocomposite for supercapacitor negative electrodes are prepared by liquid-liquid co-extraction (LLCE) technique using decylphosphonic acid (DPPA) as efficient co-extractor. LLCE offers advantages of reduced agglomeration and facilitates mixing of the individual components. This technique allows direct particle transfer from the reaction medium to the electrode fabrication slurry. The mechanism of LLCE extraction is analyzed. The synergetic effect of FeOOH, PPy and MWCNT significantly enhances charge storage properties of the FeOOH-PPy-MWCNT ternary nanocomposite electrodes. The FeOOH-PPy-MWCNT ternary nanocomposite electrode shows an integral capacitance of 5.1 F cm −2 (137.9 F g −1 ) in a negative potential window, which is significantly higher than capacitances of binary FeOOH-MWCNT and PPy-MWCNT nanocomposites. Moreover, the ternary composite offers advantages of a larger voltage window. Testing results for the ternary composites at different electrode potentials show reduced AC impedance. The asymmetric supercapacitor device composed of FeOOH-PPy-MWCNT anode and MnO 2 -MWCNT cathode exhibits a high areal capacitance of 2.5 F cm −2 at scanning rate of 2 m V s −1 in a voltage window of 1.6 V at an extremely small impedance. This facile LLCE fabrication technique opens a door for fabrication of advanced nanocomposite materials for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Hollow-structured conducting polymers such as polypyrrole microspheres (PPy MSs) and polypyrrole microtubes (PPy MTs) have attracted ever-growing interests as pseudocapacitive materials for supercapacitors. However, the poor cyclic stability heavily impedes their practical applications. Herein, the rational design of hollow core-shell (1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) composites is reported to enhance the capacitance performance of PPy microspheres and microtubes. Both microspheres and microtubes showed much higher specific capacitance, rate capability and cycling stability than the corresponding PPy cores. Owing to the higher aspect ratio, the MTs exhibited better electrochemical performance than the MSs, possessing specific capacitance of 533 F g−1 at the current density 1 A g−1, rate capability of 57.0% even at a high current density of 10 A g−1 and cycling stability of 107.4% after 10,000 cycles. This strategy is expected to offer valuable inspiration for the development of electrode materials with high performance.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy)/polypropylene fibrous membrane (PPF) composite materials with different PPy contents are prepared through in situ chemical oxidation polymerization in the pyrrole atmosphere at room temperature by dissolving the FeCl3 center dot 6H2O in methanol and acetonitrile as oxidant. The morphology of the composite is examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the conductivities of the composites are measured by convenient four-probe method, and the properties of the capacitor cells assembled by the obtained PPy/PPF are investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge, and electrochemical impedance spec-troscopy (EIS) measurements. The results show that the morphology, conductivity, and the capacitor property of the composite are influenced strongly by the solvent of the oxidant. The capacitor assembled by the PPy/PPF prepared by using acetonitrile as the solvent for FeCl3 center dot 6H2O can adapt for quick charge/discharge, and exhibit the highest capacitance of about 72.5 F g(-1) when the PPy content is about 8.0%. Facile Co-Deposition of NiO-CoO-PPy Composite for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, a novel 3-D Nanosheets of composite metal oxides of NiO-CoO and organic polypyrrole (PPy) are synthesized by facile one-step alternating current (AC) co-electrodeposition method on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) as a supercapacitor electrode. The growth process of the electrode is time-saving that the growth of electrode cost only 1 h. The NiO-CoO-PPy nanosheets display an excellent specific capacitance (1123 F g-1 (156 mAh g-1) at 1 A g-1) and remarkable cyclic stability (90.1% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor with NiO-CoO-PPy electrode and active carbon as counter electrodes exhibits an excellent energy density of 35.9 Wh kg- 1 at a power density of 801 W kg- 1. It suggests that the AC coelectrodeposition method is a highly effective way for the growth of composite metal oxides and organics supercapacitor electrode materials, which has great application value.
Fe2O3/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composites as positive electrode for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:By the simple hydrothermal and high-temperature carbonization, we report the design of a novel Fe2O3 nanoparticles laden nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composite (Fe2O3/NC) for high-performance energy storage. The homogeneous dispersion of Fe2O3 nanoparticles on NC provides excellent electron transfer, and its porous structure with mesopore volume facilitates rapid ion transport. The Fe2O3/NC composite material has high specific capacity (840.9 C g−1 at 1A g−1) and good rate performance (85.1% of the capacitance retention from 1 to 10 A g−1). Furthermore, a wide working potential window (0–1.5V) was assembled by the asymmetric supercapacitor with Fe2O3/NC composite as the positive and NC as negative electrode, respectively. The asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits good rate capability (70% of the capacitance retention from 1 to 10 A g−1) and high energy density (46.5 Wh kg−1 at 765.8 W kg−1). More importantly, the assembled device demonstrates a splendid cycling performance (93.2% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). The composites with remarkable capacitive performance inspire us to develop superior electrode materials for energy storage.

Abstract:Abstract Polypyrrole complex nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix (PPy/N-PCM) was synthesized by a simple two-step method. Firstly, graphene oxide was prepared by the modified Hummers method. Secondly, Polypyrrole was compounded on the graphene oxide substrate, and the carbon matrix with a high specific surface area was obtained through high-temperature carbonization and KOH activation, and polypyrrole was used as a nitrogen source for the final nitrogen-doped composite material. The structure characterization of the carbon matrix and the final composite material shows that the carbon matrix surface has obvious porous structure, and the polypyrrole nanospheres grow uniformly on the porous carbon matrix surface. The electrochemical evaluation show that the prepared PPy/N-PCM has excellent supercapacitor performance, and its specific capacitance can reach 237.5 F g −1 . When the current density reaches 10 A g −1 , it has good cycle stability (the capacitance retention after 1000 charge and discharge is 88.53% of the initial capacitance value, which is better than pure PPy-60.76% and PPy/rGO-C-71.84%). The excellent capacitance performance, good-looking micro-morphology and simple synthesis method of the PPy/N-PCM provide the possibility for its commercialization.

Oxidative MnO2 Template Assisted Electrochemical Fabrication of Graphene/Polypyrrole Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Improving the morphological structure of active materials is a reliable strategy for the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. In this study, we introduce a feasible approach to constructing the graphene/polypyrrole (PPy) composite film implanted onto the current collector through a two-step electrochemical deposition method utilizing MnO2 as an intermediary template. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hydrogel film is first hydrothermally grown on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate to obtain a porous rGO@CC electrode on which MnO2 is electrodeposited. Then the as-prepared rGO/MnO2@CC electrode is subjected to the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, with MnO2 acting as an oxidizing template to facilitate the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, ultimately yielding an rGO/PPy composite film on CC. The PPy synthesized via this methodology exhibits a distinctive interconnected structure, resulting in superior electrochemical performance compared with the electrode with PPy directly electrodeposited on rGO@CC. The optimized electrode achieves an impressive specific capacitance of 583.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and retains 83% of its capacitance at 20 A g-1, with a capacitance loss of only 9.5% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The corresponding all-solid-state supercapacitor could provide a high energy density of 22.5 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 4.6 kW kg-1, with a capacitance retention of 82.7% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, the device also demonstrates good flexibility performance upon bending at 90 and 180°. This work presents an innovative method for the preparation of carbon material/conducting polymer electrodes with specific structural characteristics and superior performance.
Preparation and properties of polypyrrole/polyamide 6 nanocomposite film with core-shell architecture for the high-performance flexible supercapacitor

Abstract:Herein, the flexible and highly conductive polypyrrole/polyamide 6 (PPy/PA 6) nanocomposite film with unique core-shell architecture has been prepared via a facile chemical oxidative polymerization method. By optimizing the parameters included feed ratio, ferric ions concentration and reaction time, the PPy coating was observed to in-situ growth on the electrospun PA 6 nanofiber surface, leading to a thick shell layer and maximum conductivity of 78.2 S cm−1. Furthermore, the all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor is assembled, exhibiting high specific capacitance (760 mF cm−2), power density (11 W m−2), energy density (0.68 Wh m−2) and cycling stability. Thus, considering the idea flexible characteristics and excellent electrochemical performance, the fabricated nanocomposite film shows great potential applications in the wearable electronic system especially for high-performance supercapacitor.

Abstract:Cobalt–manganese layered double hydroxide/polypyrrole (CoMn LDH/PPy) composites were synthesized via facial in situ polymerization. Composites with an LDH/PPy mass ratio of 125:40 possess simultaneous enhancement in specific capacity (220 mA h g−1 at 2.5 A g−1), rate capability (71.2% retention at 10 A g−1), and cycling performance (97.4% retention after 2000 cycles). The strong electrochemical performance of CoMn LDH/PPy results from synergistic effects of spacing from conductive PPy particles and confinement from CoMn LDH layers. Electrochemical kinetics analysis indicates that the composite is more like a battery-type material. Finally, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled using CoMn LDH/PPy as the positive electrode and multilayer graphene as the negative electrode. The ASC device with a potential of 1.53 V reaches an energy density of 29.6 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 0.5 kW kg−1. These favorable characteristics demonstrate that CoMn LDH/PPy is a promising battery-type electrode material for energy storage devices.

Abstract:Herein, unique three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically structured carbon nanofiber (CNF)/metal oxide/conducting polymer composite materials were successfully synthesized by combinations of various experimental methods. Firstly, base CNFs were synthesized by carbonization of electrospun PAN/PVP fibers to attain electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) characteristics. To further enhance the capacitance, tin oxide (SnO2) and iron oxide (Fe2O3) were coated onto the CNFs via facile hydrothermal treatment. Finally, polypyrrole (PPy) was introduced as the outermost layer by a dispersion polymerization method under static condition to obtain 3D-structured CNF/SnO2/PPy and CNF/Fe2O3/PPy materials. With each synthesis step, the morphology and dimension of materials were transformed, which also added the benign characteristic for supercapacitor application. For the practical application, as-synthesized CNF/SnO2/PPy and CNF/Fe2O3/PPy were applied as active materials for supercapacitor electrodes, and superb specific capacitances of 508.1 and 426.8 F g−1 (at 1 A g−1) were obtained (three-electrode system). Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was assembled using CNF/SnO2/PPy as the positive electrode and CNF/Fe2O3/PPy as the negative electrode. The resulting CNF/SnO2/PPy//CNF/Fe2O3/PPy device exhibited excellent specific capacitance of 101.2 F g−1 (at 1 A g−1). Notably, the ASC device displayed a long-term cyclability (at 2000 cycles) with a retention rate of 81.1%, compared to a CNF/SnO2//CNF/Fe2O3 device of 70.3% without an outermost PPy layer. By introducing the outermost PPy layer, metal oxide detachment from CNFs were prevented to facilitate long-term cyclability of electrodes. Accordingly, this study provides an effective method for manufacturing a high-performance and stable supercapacitor by utilizing unique 3D hierarchical materials, comprised of CNF, metal oxide, and conducting polymer.

Abstract:We demonstrated a facile strategy to fabricate the polypyrrole nanospheres/Ti3C2-MXene (PPy/Ti3C2) heterostructure nanocomposite as an advanced supercapacitors electrode material. The well-defined PPy nanospheres with average diameter of about 75 nm were anchored on ultrathin Ti3C2 nanosheets via in situ polymerizations of pyrrole monomers in the introduction of Ti3C2 suspension. The electrode materials of ultrathin Ti3C2 nanosheets and uniform PPy nanospheres with different energy storage mechanisms were effective combined, which made the specific capacitance and cycling stability of the PPy/Ti3C2 heterostructure nanocomposite improved via the synergistic effect between the different EDLCs and pseudocapacitance materials. Furthermore, the electrochemical test with a three-electrode system in 1.0 M H2SO4 solution exhibited that the specific capacitance of the PPy/Ti3C2 heterostructure nanocomposite was as high as 458 F g(-1) at the scan rate of 2 mV s(-1), which was significantly higher than that of pristine Ti3C2 (132 F g(-1)). Moreover, the optimal PPy/Ti3C2 nanocomposite showed good cycling stability. In particular, the PPy/Ti3C2-S2 symmetric supercapacitor achieved high energy density of 21.61 Wh kg(-1) a at the power density of 499.94 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, after 4000 charge and discharge tests the initial capacitance retention was 73.68% at 1A g(-1). Overall, the novel PPy/Ti3C2 electrode with the stable microstructure and excellent energy storage features has potential to be applied in practical, demonstrating the promising potential of the energy storage device.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy)/graphene nainocomposite was prepared by methyl orange (MO) reactive template. By changing the amount of MO, the morphology of PPy can be controlled to range from nanoparticle to nanowire. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction results demonstrated that the composites were successfully synthesized. The different morphologies of PPy/graphene nanocomposites had certain effects on the supercapacitor performance. The experimental results showed that the capacitance of PPy (nanoparticle)/graphene was higher than that of PPy (nanowire)/graphene. As a model, PPy (nanoparticle)/graphene was used to construct a supercapacitor. By changing the amount of pyrrole monomer, the performance of the supercapacitor prepared from different PPy content was studied in detail.

Abstract:Due to favourable pseudo-capacitive performance, the polyaniline and polypyrrole are highly potential candidates for supercapacitor applications. In this study, core-shell poly(aniline-co-pyrrole) is prepared by in-situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of polyaniline nanofibers. Poly(aniline-co-pyrrole) is mixed with the suspension of graphene oxide to prepare three-dimensional core-shell poly(aniline-co-pyrrole)/reduced graphene oxide composite using hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning electronic microscopy, Transmission electron microscope, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements for the morphology, structure and supercapacitor performance of the composite. Results show that poly(aniline-co-pyrrole) is inlaid into the three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide. Poly(aniline-co-pyrrole)/reduced graphene oxide exhibits superior supercapacitor performance among the composites, benefiting from its unique composite structures, innate electrochemical properties and the synergistic effect of three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide and poly(aniline-co-pyrrole). The maximum specific capacitance of three-dimensional core-shell poly(aniline-co-pyrrole)/reduced graphene oxide composite prepared at a mass ratio of graphene oxide and poly(aniline-co-pyrrole) of 0.9:1 is 684.5 F·g−1 at a current density of 1 A·g−1. Even at a current density of 20 A·g−1, the specific capacitance still reaches 417 F·g−1. The capacitance retention of three-dimensional core-shell poly(aniline-co-pyrrole)/reduced graphene oxide electrode is 88% after 1000 charge and discharge cycles, showing excellent supercapacitor performance.

Abstract:A novel MnO2/polypyrrole (PPy) heterogeneous composite with nanotubular structure is reported by a facile preparation of in situ chemical polymerization via a reactive template of MnO2. MnO2 nanotubes are found to be served as both appropriate oxidants and scaffolds to polymerize conducting PPy nanocoatings on the surface, thus constructing a unique coaxial configuration. The electrochemical measurements show that both components in the hybrid nanocomposites exhibit highly pseudocapacitive behavior in neutral KCl aqueous electrolyte. MnO2/PPy nanocomposites prepared from an initial MnO2/pyrrole ratio (3:1) deliver a maximum specific capacitance of 337 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 with good rate capability and long-term cycling stability, demonstrating their promising applications in high-performance supercapacitors. Moreover, the synthetic methodology may provide a generic guideline in developing different nanostructured MnO2/PPy electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage.
