Abstract:Cued sensory input occasionally fails to immediately ensue its respective trigger. Given that our environments are rich in sensory cues, we often end up processing other contextually relevant information in the meantime. The experimental design of the present study allowed us to investigate how such temporal delays and visual interferences may impact anticipatory processes. Thirty-four participants were trained to remember an individualised set of eight paired-up faces. These paired-up faces were presented pseudorandomly in sequences of unpaired face images. To keep participants engaged throughout the electroencephalography study, they were instructed to classify each face image, according to its sex, as fast as possible without compromising accuracy. We observed dissimilar modulations in alpha and beta power between the 6-s timeframe encompassing the onsets of predictive and expected images (temporal delay block) and the 6-s timeframe encompassing the predictive, interference and expected images (visual interference block). Furthermore, an expectation-facilitated reduction of the face-sensitive N170 component was only observed if an anticipated face image directly followed its corresponding predictive counterpart. This effect was no longer evident when the expected face was preceded by a distracting face image. Regardless of the block type, behavioural measures confirmed that anticipated faces were classified significantly faster and with fewer erroneous responses than faces not foretold by a predictive face. Collectively, these results demonstrate that whilst the brain continuously adjusts internal hierarchical generative models to account for temporal delays in stimulus onset and visual interferences, the higher levels, and subsequent predictions, fundamental for expectation-facilitated behaviours remain intact.
Spatial Attention Tunes Temporal Processing in Early Visual Cortex by Speeding and Slowing Alpha Oscillations

Abstract:The perception of dynamic visual stimuli relies on two apparently conflicting perceptual mechanisms: rapid visual input must sometimes be integrated into unitary percepts but at other times must be segregated or parsed into separate objects or events. Though they have opposite effects on our perceptual experience, the deployment of spatial attention benefits both operations. Little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying this impact of spatial attention on temporal perception. Here, we record magnetoencephalography (MEG) in male and female humans to demonstrate that the deployment of spatial attention for the purpose of segregating or integrating visual stimuli impacts prestimulus oscillatory activity in retinotopic visual brain areas where the attended location is represented. Alpha band oscillations contralateral to an attended location are therefore faster than ipsilateral oscillations when stimuli appearing at this location will need to be segregated, but slower in expectation of the need for integration, consistent with the idea that α frequency is linked to perceptual sampling rate. These results demonstrate a novel interaction between temporal visual processing and the allocation of attention in space. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Our environment is dynamic and visual input therefore varies over time. To make sense of continuously changing information, our visual system balances two complementary processes: temporal segregation in order to identify changes, and temporal integration to identify consistencies in time. When we know that a circumstance requires use of one or the other of these operations, we are able to prepare for this, and this preparation can be tracked in oscillatory brain activity. Here, we show how this preparation for temporal processing can be focused spatially. When we expect to integrate or segregate visual stimuli that will appear at a specific location, oscillatory brain activity changes in visual areas responsible for the representation of that location. In this way, spatial and temporal mechanisms interact to support adaptive, efficient perception.

Anticipatory and evoked visual cortical dynamics of voluntary temporal attention

Abstract:We can often anticipate the precise moment when a stimulus will be relevant for our behavioral goals. Voluntary temporal attention, the prioritization of sensory information at task-relevant time points, enhances visual perception. However, the neural mechanisms of voluntary temporal attention have not been isolated from those of temporal expectation, which reflects timing predictability rather than relevance. Here we used time-resolved steady-state visual evoked responses (SSVER) to investigate how temporal attention dynamically modulates visual activity when temporal expectation is controlled. We recorded MEG while observers directed temporal attention to one of two sequential grating targets with predictable timing. Meanwhile, we used a co-localized SSVER probe to continuously track visual cortical modulations both before and after the target stimuli. In the pre-target period, the SSVER gradually ramped up as the targets approached, reflecting temporal expectation. Furthermore, we found a low-frequency modulation of the SSVER, which shifted approximately half a cycle in phase according to which target was attended. In the post-target period, temporal attention to the first target transiently modulated the SSVER shortly after target onset. Thus, temporal attention dynamically modulates visual cortical responses via both periodic pre-target and transient post-target mechanisms to prioritize sensory information at precise moments.

Abstract:This research explores how ideas occur in creative work and the strategies and tools used to represent and develop them. We describe the analysis of an open questionnaire survey of creative practitioners' use of devices to represent ideas and capture inspirational material. Unconscious processes, novel experiences and time away from practice frequently provoke ideas. Our analysis finds that ubiquitous devices are important to practitioners for making initial representations for personal use. Paper and pen remains by far the most common device employed, however respondents perceived organisational advantages in new technology. Representations are created as initial memory aids, platforms for development, or to share ideas. A single representation is rarely suitable for all these purposes.
Perceptual Expectations Are Reflected by Early Alpha Power Reduction

Abstract:Abstract The predictability of a stimulus can be characterized by its transitional probability. Perceptual expectations derived from the transitional probability of the stimulus were found to modulate the early alpha oscillations in the sensory regions of the brain when neural responses to expected versus unexpected stimuli were compared. The objective of our study was to find out the extent to which this low-frequency oscillation reflects stimulus predictability. We aimed to detect the alpha-power difference with smaller differences in transitional probabilities by comparing expected stimuli with neutral ones. We studied the effect of expectation on perception by applying an unsupervised visual statistical learning paradigm with expected and neutral stimuli embedded in an image sequence while recording EEG. Time–frequency analysis showed that expected stimuli elicit lower alpha power in the window of 8–12 Hz and 0–400 msec after stimulus presentation, appearing in the centroparietal region. Comparing previous findings of expectancy-based alpha-band modulation with our results suggests that early alpha oscillation shows an inverse relationship with stimulus predictability. Although current data are insufficient to determine the origin of the alpha power reduction, this could be a potential sign of expectation suppression in cortical oscillatory activity.

Behavioral Oscillation in Priming: Competing Perceptual Predictions Conveyed in Alternating Theta-Band Rhythms.

Abstract:Neuronal oscillations are ubiquitous in the brain and contribute to perception and attention. Our recent work (Song et al., 2014), in combination with other studies, by measuring response time (RT) in a high time-resolved manner, demonstrates dynamic oscillatory pattern directly in behavioral measurement ('behavioral oscillation') in a spatial attentional task, suggesting that multiple spatial locations are sampled alternatively in various phase of attentional rhythms. However, it remains completely unknown whether such oscillation-based temporal coordination may also mediate processes at the same spatial location. In the present study, we investigate how multiple perceptual predictions are conveyed and coordinated to guide moment-by-moment visual perception at one fixed spatial location, by employing priming paradigms in combination with a time-resolved behavioral approach. We first replicate classical priming effects in slowly developing trends of priming time courses. Importantly, after removing the typical priming patterns, we reveal a new and separable theta-band (~4 Hz) oscillatory component in the priming behavior, regardless of whether the prime was masked or not. Furthermore and critically, these theta-band priming oscillations triggered by congruent and incongruent primes are in an out-of-phase relationship. These findings suggest that multiple perceptual predictions are dynamically yet competitively coordinated in time by being conveyed in different phases of the theta-band oscillations to achieve dissociated but temporally organized neural representation, similar to previous findings in spatial attention. In summary, the results speak to a critical and general role of oscillation-based temporal organization and coordination in visual attention. Meeting abstract presented at VSS 2015.

Abstract:Experiments were designed to determine whether or not endogenous endothelin (ET) contributes to endothelium-independent anoxic contractions of canine coronary arteries. Rings without endothelium were suspended for isometric tension recording in conventional organ chambers filled with modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate solution. Anoxia (PO2 < or = 1 mm Hg) caused reproducible contractions. The anoxic contractions were augmented by exogenous endothelin-1 (ET-1). At 10(-6) M and 10(-5) M, BQ-123 (a specific endothelin antagonist) inhibited both the facilitatory effect of ET-1 and the anoxic contractions. At these concentrations BQ-123 caused a parallel shift to the right of the concentration-response curve to ET-1 and a small but significant depression of the response to norepinephrine, without affecting the maximal response to the catecholamine. BQ-123 did not significantly affect the concentration-response curve to Ca2+ in depolarizing solution (60 mM KCl). Monoclonal antibodies against ET-1 (70 micrograms/ml) inhibited the response to exogenous ET-1 and abolished the facilitating effect of the peptide, but did not affect the anoxic contractions. These results suggest that ET-1 contributes to anoxic contractions in canine coronary arteries without endothelium. The receptor involved belongs to the ETA-subtype and is not accessible to monoclonal antibodies.
Selective Effects of Ongoing Alpha-Band Activity on Magno- and Parvo-Mediated Detection

Abstract:Spontaneous fluctuations in cortical excitability, as reflected in variation in occipital alpha-band activity (8-12 Hz), have been shown to explain trial-to-trial variability in perception. Specifically, observers typically report seeing a stimulus more often during states of weak alpha power, likely due to a shift in detection criterion. However, prior work has paid little attention to the specific stimulus properties mediating detection. In early vision, different stimulus properties are preferentially processed along the magnocellular (MC) and parvocellular (PC) pathways, which vary in their preference for spatial and temporal frequency content and chromatic information. The goal of this study was to understand how spontaneous alpha power affects the detection of stimuli which are preferentially processed by either the MC or PC pathway. To achieve this, we used the "Steady/Pulsed Paradigm" which presented a brief, near-threshold stimulus in two conditions intended to bias processing to one or the other pathway. Our results showed an interaction effect of pre-stimulus alpha power on detection between the two conditions. While weak alpha power was predictive of seeing the stimulus in the steady condition (MC-biased), no significant effect was found in the pulsed condition (PC-biased). This interaction was driven by a selective alpha-related criterion shift in the steady condition, with no effect of pre-stimulus alpha on sensitivity (d') in either condition. Our results imply that alpha oscillations may differentially regulate excitability in the MC and PC pathways.

Abstract:Predictions of future events have a major impact on how we process sensory signals. However, it remains unclear how the brain keeps predictions online in anticipation of future inputs. Here, we combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) and multivariate decoding techniques to investigate the content of perceptual predictions and their frequency characteristics. Participants were engaged in a shape discrimination task, while auditory cues predicted which specific shape would likely appear. Frequency analysis revealed significant oscillatory fluctuations of predicted shape representations in the pre-stimulus window in the alpha band (10 – 11Hz). Furthermore, we found that this stimulus-specific alpha power was linked to expectation effects on shape discrimination. Our findings demonstrate that sensory predictions are embedded in pre-stimulus alpha oscillations and modulate subsequent perceptual performance, providing a neural mechanism through which the brain deploys perceptual predictions.

Abstract:Recent studies demonstrate that behavioral performance during visual spatial attention fluctuates at theta (4 to 8 Hz) and alpha (8 to 16 Hz) frequencies, linked to phase–amplitude coupling of neural oscillations within the visual and attentional system depending on task demands. To investigate the influence of prior spatial prediction, we employed an adaptive discrimination task with variable cue–target onset asynchronies (300 to 1,300 ms) and different cue validity (100% & 50%). We recorded electroencephalography concurrently and adopted adaptive electroencephalography data analytical methods, namely, Holo–Holo-Hilbert spectral analysis and Holo–Hilbert cross-frequency phase clustering. Our findings indicate that response precision for near-threshold Landolt rings fluctuates at the theta band (4 Hz) under certain predictions and at alpha & beta bands (15 & 19 Hz) with uncertain predictions. Furthermore, spatial prediction strengthens theta–alpha modulations at parietal-occipital areas, frontal theta/parietal-occipital alpha phase–amplitude coupling, and within frontal theta-alpha phase–amplitude coupling. Notably, during the pretarget period, beta-modulated gamma oscillations in parietal-occipital areas predict response precision under uncertain prediction, while frontal theta/parietal-occipital alpha phase–amplitude coupling predicts response precision in spatially certain conditions. In conclusion, our study highlights the critical role of spatial prediction in attentional sampling rhythms with both behavioral and electroencephalography evidence.

Abstract:Abstract Anticipatory covert spatial attention improves performance on tests of visual detection and discrimination, and shifts are accompanied by decreases and increases of alpha-band power at EEG electrodes corresponding to the attended and unattended location, respectively. Although the increase at the unattended location is often interpreted as an active mechanism (e.g., inhibiting processing at the unattended location), most experiments cannot rule out the alternative possibility that it is a secondary consequence of selection elsewhere. To adjudicate between these accounts, we designed a Posner-style cuing task in which male and female human participants made orientation judgments of targets appearing at one of four locations: up, down, right , or left . Critically, trials were blocked such that within a block the locations along one meridian alternated in status between attended and unattended , and targets never appeared at the other two, making them irrelevant . Analyses of the concurrently measured EEG signal were carried out on traditional narrowband alpha (8-14 Hz), as well as on two components resulting from the decomposition of this signal: periodic alpha; and the slope of the aperiodic 1/f-like component. Although data from right - left blocks replicated the familiar pattern of lateralized asymmetry in narrowband alpha power, with neither alpha signal could we find evidence for any difference in the time course at unattended versus irrelevant locations, an outcome consistent with the secondary-consequence interpretation of attention-related dynamics in the alpha band. Additionally, 1/f slope was lower at attended and unattended locations, relative to irrelevant , suggesting a tonic adjustment of physiological state.
Prestimulus Alpha Phase Modulates Visual Temporal Integration

Abstract:When presented shortly after another, discrete pictures are naturally perceived as continuous. The neuronal mechanism underlying such continuous or discrete perception is not well understood. While continuous alpha oscillations are a candidate for orchestrating such neuronal mechanisms, recent evidence is mixed. In this study, we investigated the influence of prestimulus alpha oscillation on visual temporal perception. Specifically, we were interested in whether prestimulus alpha phase modulates neuronal and perceptual processes underlying discrete or continuous perception. Participants had to report the location of a missing object in a visual temporal integration task, while simultaneously MEG data were recorded. Using source reconstruction, we evaluated local phase effects by contrasting phase angle values between correctly and incorrectly integrated trials. Our results show a phase opposition cluster between –0.8 and –0.5 s (relative to stimulus presentation) and between 6 and 20 Hz. These momentary phase angle values were correlated with behavioral performance and event-related potential amplitude. There was no evidence that frequency defined a window of temporal integration.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Fenton reaction is the main source of free radicals in biological systems. The reactivity of this reaction can be modified by several factors, among these iron ligands are important. Catecholamine (dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) are able to form Fe(III) complexes whose extension in the coordination number depends upon the pH. Fe(III)-catecholamine complexes have been related with the development of several pathologies. Methods: In this work, the ability of catecholamines to enhance the oxidative degradation of an organic substrate (veratryl alcohol, VA) through Fenton and Fenton-like reactions was studied. The initial VA degradation rate at different pH values and its relationship to the different iron species present in solution were determined. Furthermore, the oxidative degradation of VA after 24 hours of reaction and its main oxidation products were also determined. Results: The catecholamine-driven Fenton and Fenton-like systems showed higher VA degradation compared to unmodified Fenton or Fenton-like systems, which also showed an increase in the oxidation state of the VA degradation product. All of this oxidative degradation takes place at pH values lower than 5.50, where the primarily responsible species would be the Fe(III) mono-complex. Conclusion: The presence of Fe(III) mono-complex is essential in the ability of catecholamines to increase the oxidative capacity of Fenton systems.
Expectancy-related modulations of neural oscillations in continuous performance tasks

Abstract:Analysis of neural oscillations in the electroencephalogram (EEG) during cognitive tasks provides valuable information about underlying neuronal processing not accessible by other methods such as event-related potentials (ERPs) and the BOLD signal in fMRI. We investigated neural substrates of motor preparation and expectancy by analyzing neural oscillations of healthy subjects performing the AX continuous performance task (AX-CPT), a task widely used to evaluate processes such as cognitive control, motor preparation and anticipatory and sustained attention. The task consists of letters presented sequentially on a monitor, and subjects are required to respond only when they see the letter A (cue) followed by the letter X (target). In this study, to emphasize expectation and motor preparation, three versions of AX-CPT were used in which the overall propensity to respond was differentially modulated, by changing the probability of the letter sequences. Neural activity was investigated in three time windows following presentation of the cue: sensory, evaluation and preparation. Alpha power was reduced following cue onset similarly in all versions of the task in both the sensory and evaluation periods, but in the later preparation period there were task dependent modulations. Alpha was decreased when an infrequent cue increased the chance of a response, and increased when a propensity to respond had to be overcome, possibly reflecting an anticipatory attentional mechanism to gate visuo-motor processing. Beta power was modulated by task and cue in both evaluation and preparation periods. In the latter, beta power reflected the propensity to respond and correlated both with amplitude of the contingent negative variation (CNV), an ERP that reflects response preparation, and with reaction time. Some clinical populations such as patients with schizophrenia or attention-deficit disorder show specific deficits when performing the AX-CPT. These results provide a basis for investigating the differential neural underpinnings of oscillatory cognitive control deficits observed in various patient populations.

Anticipation across modalities in children and adults: Relating anticipatory alpha rhythm lateralization, reaction time, and executive function

Abstract:The development of the ability to anticipate – as manifested by preparatory actions and neural activation related to expectation of an upcoming stimulus – may play a key role in the ontogeny of cognitive skills more broadly. This preregistered study examined anticipatory brain potentials and behavioral responses (reaction time; RT) to anticipated target stimuli in relation to individual differences in the ability to use goals to direct action (as indexed by measures of executive function; EF). A cross‐sectional investigation was conducted in 40 adults (aged 18–25 years) and 40 children (aged 6–8 years) to examine the association of changes in the amplitude of modality‐specific alpha‐range rhythms in the electroencephalogram (EEG) during anticipation of lateralized visual, tactile, or auditory stimuli with inter‐ and intra‐individual variation in RT and EF. Children and adults exhibited contralateral anticipatory reductions in the mu rhythm and the visual alpha rhythm for tactile and visual anticipation respectively, indicating modality‐ and spatially‐specific attention allocation. Variability in within‐subject anticipatory alpha lateralization (the difference between contralateral and ipsilateral alpha power) was related to single‐trial RT. This relation was more prominent in adults than in children, and was not apparent for auditory stimuli. Multilevel models indicated that inter‐individual differences in anticipatory mu rhythm lateralization contributed to the significant association with variability in EF, but this was not the case for visual or auditory alpha rhythms. Exploratory microstate analyses were undertaken to cluster global field power into a distribution‐free temporal analysis examining developmental differences across samples and in relation to RT and EF. Anticipation is suggested as a developmental bridge construct connecting neuroscience, behavior, and cognition, with anticipatory EEG oscillations being discussed as quantifiable and potentially malleable indicators of stimulus prediction. Prestimulus lateralization of visual alpha and sensorimotor mu rhythms was evident in anticipation of lateralized visual or tactile stimuli in children aged 6–8 years and adults aged 18–25 years. Single‐trial variability in prestimulus alpha lateralization was related to reaction time to visual and tactile stimuli, with a stronger association evident in adults than children. Individual differences in executive function were related to the extent of anticipatory lateralization of visual alpha and sensorimotor mu rhythms, controlling for the association of reaction time with trial‐level alpha lateralization. Significant anticipatory lateralization was evident for visual and sensorimotor alpha rhythms, but not for tau rhythm modulation in anticipation of an auditory stimulus. FEF-Controlled Alpha Delay Activity Precedes Stimulus-Induced Gamma-Band Activity in Visual Cortex

Abstract:Recent findings in the visual system of nonhuman primates have demonstrated an important role of gamma-band activity (40-100 Hz) in the feedforward flow of sensory information, whereas feedback control appears to be established dynamically by oscillations in the alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-18 Hz) bands (van Kerkoerle et al., 2014; Bastos et al., 2015). It is not clear, however, how alpha oscillations are controlled and how they interact with the flow of visual information mediated by gamma-band activity. Using noninvasive human MEG recordings in subjects performing a visuospatial attention task, we show that fluctuations in alpha power during a delay period in a spatial attention task preceded subsequent stimulus-driven gamma-band activity. Importantly, these interactions correlated with behavioral performance. Using Granger analysis, we further show that the right frontal-eye field (rFEF) exerted feedback control of the visual alpha oscillations. Our findings suggest that alpha oscillations controlled by the FEF route cortical information flow by modulating gamma-band activity.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Visual perception relies on a feedforward flow of information from sensory regions, which is modulated by a feedback drive. We have identified the neuronal dynamics supporting integration of the feedforward and feedback information. Alpha oscillations in early visual regions reflect feedback control when spatial attention is allocated and this control is exercised by the right frontal eye field. Importantly, the alpha-band activity predicted both performance and activity in the gamma band. In particular, gamma activity was modulated by the phase of the alpha oscillations. These findings provide novel insight into how the brain operates as a network and suggest that the integration of feedforward and feedback information is implemented by cross-frequency interactions between slow and fast neuronal oscillations.
Distinct contributions of alpha and theta rhythms to perceptual and attentional sampling

Abstract:<p>Accumulating evidence suggests that visual perception operates in an oscillatory fashion at an alpha frequency (around 10 Hz). Moreover, visual attention also seems to operate rhythmically, albeit at a theta frequency (around 5 Hz). Both rhythms are often associated to "perceptual snapshots" taken at the favorable phases of these rhythms. However, less is known about the unfavorable phases: do they constitute "blind gaps," requiring the observer to guess, or is information sampled with reduced precision insufficient for the task demands? As simple detection or discrimination tasks cannot distinguish these options, we applied a continuous report task by asking for the exact orientation of a Landolt ring's gap to estimate separate model parameters for precision and the amount of guessing. We embedded this task in a well‐established psychophysical protocol by densely sampling such reports across 20 cue‐target stimulus onset asynchronies in a Posner‐like cueing paradigm manipulating involuntary spatial attention. Testing the resulting time courses of the guessing and precision parameters for rhythmicities using a fast Fourier transform, we found an alpha rhythm (9.6 Hz) in precision for invalidly cued trials and a theta rhythm (4.8 Hz) in the guess rate across validity conditions. These results suggest distinct roles of the perceptual alpha and the attentional theta rhythm. We speculate that both rhythms result in environmental sampling characterized by fluctuating spatial resolution, speaking against a strict succession of blind gaps and perceptual snapshots.</p>
