Abstract:Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) has been found to produce different impacts on anxiety-like behaviors, spatial cognitive function and memory in rodents with different susceptibilities. However, the impacts of chronic social defeat on social behaviors in adult male mice with different susceptibilities to social defeat and the underlying mechanisms in the brain remain unclear. In the present study, we found that ten days of social defeat reduced the tendency of susceptible adult male C57 mice to approach an unfamiliar individual and increased their avoidance of an unfamiliar CD-1 mouse but had no effects on resilient individuals. In addition, CSDS enhanced anxiety-like behavior in susceptible animals, but produced no effects in the resilient group. Meanwhile, CSDS increased the number of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-positive neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and CRF-R2-positive neurons in the accumbens nucleus shell in both resilient and susceptible animals. CSDS increased the number of CRF-R1-positive neurons and CRF-R1 mRNA expression in the prelimbic cortex (PrL) and the number of CRF-R2-positive neurons in the basolateral amygdala, but reduced the number of CRF-R2-positive neurons and mRNA expression in the PrL in susceptible animals. Therefore, the different effects of CSDS on sociability and anxiety-like behavior in mice with different susceptibilities may be associated with region- and type-specific alterations in CRF receptor levels. These findings help us understand the underlying mechanism by which social stress affects emotion and social behavior and provides an important basis for the treatment of disorders of social and emotional behavior caused by social stress.

Abstract:Animals susceptible to chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) exhibit depression-related behaviors, with aberrant transcription across several limbic brain regions, most notably in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Early life stress (ELS) promotes susceptibility to CSDS in adulthood, but associated enduring changes in transcriptional control mechanisms in the NAc have not yet been investigated. In this study, we examined long-lasting changes to histone modifications in the NAc of male and female mice exposed to ELS. Dimethylation of lysine 79 of histone H3 (H3K79me2) and the enzymes (DOT1L and KDM2B) that control this modification are enriched in D2-type medium spiny neurons and are shown to be crucial for the expression of ELS-induced stress susceptibility. We mapped the site-specific regulation of this histone mark genome wide to reveal the transcriptional networks it modulates. Finally, systemic delivery of a small molecule inhibitor of DOT1L reversed ELS-induced behavioral deficits, indicating the clinical relevance of this epigenetic mechanism.
Chronic stress followed by social isolation promotes depressive-like behaviour, alters microglial and astrocyte biology and reduces hippocampal neurogenesis in male mice

Abstract:Unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) is one of the most commonly used, robust and translatable models for studying the neurobiological basis of major depression. Although the model currently has multiple advantages, it does not entirely follow the trajectory of the disorder, whereby depressive symptomology can often present months after exposure to stress. Furthermore, patients with depression are more likely to withdraw in response to their stressful experience, or as a symptom of their depression, and, in turn, this withdrawal/isolation can further exacerbate the stressful experience and the depressive symptomology. Therefore, we investigated the effect(s) of 6 weeks of UCMS followed by another 6 weeks of social isolation (referred to as UCMSI), on behaviour, corticosterone stress responsivity, immune system functioning, and hippocampal neurogenesis, in young adult male mice. We found that UCMSI induced several behavioural changes resembling depression but did not induce peripheral inflammation. However, UCMSI animals showed increased microglial activation in the ventral dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus and astrocyte activation in both the dorsal and ventral DG, with increased GFAP-positive cell immunoreactivity, GFAP-positive cell hypertrophy and process extension, and increased s100β-positive cell density. Moreover, UCMSI animals had significantly reduced neurogenesis in the DG and reduced levels of peripheral vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) - a trophic factor produced by astrocytes and that stimulates neurogenesis. Finally, UCMSI mice also had normal baseline corticosterone levels but a smaller increase in corticosterone following acute stress, that is, the Porsolt Swim Test. Our work gives clinically relevant insights into the role that microglial and astrocyte functioning, and hippocampal neurogenesis may play in the context of stress, social isolation and depression, offering a potentially new avenue for therapeutic target.
Chronic social defeat stress in female mice leads to sex-specific behavioral and neuroendocrine effects

Abstract:<span>Over the years, it has become increasingly clear that males and females respond differently towards environmental stressors, highlighting the importance of including both sexes when studying the effects of stress. This study aims to provide further insight into the detailed consequences of exposing female mice to 21 days of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS). We used a protocol that relies on the ability of odorants and pheromones in male urine to trigger male mouse aggressive behavior. Collected male C57Bl/6n urine was applied to female C57Bl/6n mice who were then attacked by a novel male CD1 mouse each day according to the CDSD protocol. Control females were pair-housed and handled daily. Physiological, neuroendocrine and behavioral changes were evaluated during the experiment. CSDS exposure resulted in number of physiological changes, such as body weight gain, enlarged adrenals and reduced thymus weight, exaggerated HPA-axis negative feedback and increased anxiety-like behavior. However, no generalized social avoidance behavior was observed. This study provides important insights in the physiological, neuroendocrine and behavioral responses of female mice to CSDS, which are partially dependent on estrous cycle stage. This protocol will allow direct comparison of male and female responses to CSDS and enable sex-specific study of mechanisms underlying individual stress resilience.In this study we found that there are differences in the way that female and male mice respond towards chronic social stress conditions when it comes to behavior and hormonal changes.</span>
Chronic unpredictable mild stress paradigm in male Wistar rats: effect on anxiety- and depressive-like behavior

Abstract:Objectives: There are several models of depression. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CMS) appears to have the greatest validity, although it is often being criticized for low reliability. Methods: Male Wistar/DV rats were used in this study to assess our modified 2-week model of CMS as a combination of psychosocial, physical and metabolic stressors and to compare the effect of acute administration of venlafaxine (VFX) and diazepam (DZP), either in stress or no stress conditions. The animals were exposed to one particular stressor each day. The time of day and duration of the stressor differed across the procedure to avoid animals to adapt to the stress stimulus. After cessation of stress, the animals underwent the following behavioral tests to assess motor activity, cognition, anxiety- and depression-like behavior: Open field test, Elevated plus maze, Forced swim test, Stress-iduced hyperthermia, Light/dark test and Y maze. To assess hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) reactivity in our CMS model, plasma corticosterone levels were measured 24 h after termination of stress. Results: Corticosterone levels were significantly increased compared to control values (p<0.05) in our experimental schedule of CMS. Our paradigm produced delayed anxiety-like behavior observed in Open field (decreased time spent in central zone 3 weeks after CMS, p<0.05), with anxiolytic effect of CMS shortly after its cessation. Stressed animals spent more time in the open arms of Elevated plus maze (p<0.05) and travelled longer distance in the light zone of the Light/dark box (p<0.01). CMS did not increase the behavioral despair analyzed in Forced swim test yet it disrupted the capacity of the Stress-induced hyperthermia test (CMS rats failed to react to the stress by increasing the core temperature). Conclusions: Based on our results, we can conclude that our CMS protocol leads to increased corticosterone levels as a result of HPA axis hyperactivity and produces delayed onset of anxiogenic behavior. Moreover, CMS exerted a substantial effect on the behavioral outputs, interfering with drug testing.

Abstract:Stress, especially chronic stress, is one of the most important factors responsible for precipitation of affective disorders in humans. The animal models commonly used in the investigation of stress effects are based mainly on powerful physical stressors. In the majority of cases, these models are not relevant to situations that human beings encounter in everyday life. In our study, an animal model for chronic social stress has been developed for rats using a resident-intruder paradigm. This paradigm is considered a model of social defeat or subordination, and therefore may mimic situations occurring in humans. Rats were subjected daily to subordination stress for a period of five weeks and, in parallel, tested with a battery of behavioural tests. Chronically stressed rats showed behavioural changes, including decreased motility and exploratory activity, increased immobility in a forced swim test, and reduced preference for sweet sucrose solution (anhedonia). Reduced locomotor and exploratory activity represents a loss of interest in new stimulating situations, implying a deficit in motivation. Increased immobility in the forced swim test indicates behavioural despair, a characteristic of depressive disorders. Decreased sucrose preference may indicate desensitisation of the brain reward mechanism. Since anhedonia is one of the core symptoms of depression in humans, our findings suggest that the rat chronic social stress model may be an appropriate model for depressive disorders.

Abstract:Chronic stress leads to changes in energy status and is a major risk factor for depression, with common symptoms of reductions in body weight and effortful motivation for reward. Indeed, stress-induced disturbed energy status could be a major aetio-pathogenic factor for depression. Improved understanding of these putative inter-relationships requires animal model studies of effects of stress on both peripheral and central energy-status measures and determinants. Here we conducted a study in mice fed on a standard low-fat diet and exposed to either 15-day chronic social stress (CSS) or control handling (CON). Relative to CON mice, CSS mice had attenuated body weight maintenance/gain despite consuming the same amount of food and expending the same amount of energy at any given body weight. The low weight of CSS mice was associated with less white and brown adipose tissues, and with a high respiratory exchange ratio consistent with increased dependence on glucose as energy substrate. Basal plasma insulin was low in CSS mice and exogenous glucose challenge resulted in a relatively prolonged elevation of blood glucose. With regard to hunger and satiety hormones, respectively, CSS mice had higher levels of acylated ghrelin in plasma and of ghrelin receptor gene expression in ventromedial hypothalamus and lower levels of plasma leptin, relative to CON mice. However, whilst CSS mice displayed this constellation of peripheral changes consistent with increases in energy need and glucose utilization relative to CON mice, they also displayed attenuated uptake of [18F]FDG in brain tissue specifically. Reduced brain glucose utilization in CSS mice could contribute to the reduced effortful motivation for reward in the form of sweet-tasting food that we have reported previously for CSS mice. It will now be important to utilize this model to further understanding of the mechanisms via which chronic stress can increase energy need but decrease brain glucose utilization and how this relates to regional and cellular changes in neural circuits for reward processing relevant to depression.

Abstract:Neuropsychiatric disorders, such as major depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, tend to be long-term conditions in whose development and maintenance stress are central pathogenic factors. Translational mouse models are widely used in neuropsychiatric research, exploiting social and non-social stressors to investigate the mechanisms underlying their detrimental effects. However, most studies focus on the short-term consequences of chronic stress, whereas only a few are interested in the long-term course. This is counterintuitive given the human conditions that preclinical models are designed to mimic. In this review, we have summarized the limited work to date on long-term effects of chronic stress in mice models. First, the different models are presented and a definition of short- vs. long-term sequelae is proposed. On this basis, behavioral, endocrine, and vegetative effects are addressed before examining data on cellular and molecular alterations in the brain. Finally, future directions for research on the long-term effects of stress are discussed.

Comparison of depressive behaviors induced by three stress paradigms in rats.

Abstract:Depression is a severe psychiatric disorder, which is a huge burden on both the individual and society as a whole. Neurobiological studies of depression on humans are limited by ethics. Animal models established by stressor stimulation are currently effective tools for the neurobiological study of depression. In this study, we comparatively analyzed behavioral heterogeneity, gender, and individual differences in animal models reflecting early life stress, adverse events in adulthood, or combined early life stress and stressful events in adulthood. Results demonstrated that these three different stressors induced dissimilar depressive behaviors. Maternal deprivation (MD) induced severe anhedonia. Chronic unpredictable stress (CUPS) induced the most severe decrease in desperation behavior, moderate anhedonia, and moderate loss of interest in exploration of the surroundings. Dural stress (DS) exposure caused the most severe decline in interest in exploring the surroundings. Male rats all exhibited some form of depressive behavior after they were exposed to MD, CUPS and DS. In contrast, no depressive performance was observed in female rats after they were exposed to MD, and the CUPS only decreased the total distance the rats crawled in the open field test. Rats exhibited more obvious individual differences in floating time than in the vertical activity, total distance and sucrose preference rate when experiencing stress. Our study suggests that different stressors may induce different depression subtypes and that the observed differences in the prevalence of depression between genders in the clinic may be due to effect of psychosocial factors which affects humans more strongly than rats. Our study also suggests that individual difference is more obvious in desperation behaviors than that in exploratory interest and anhedonia when the individual experienced stress.
Region- and receptor-specific effects of chronic social stress on the central serotonergic system in mice

Abstract:Serotonin (5-HT), via its receptors expressed in discrete brain regions, modulates aversion and reward processing and is implicated in various psychiatric disorders including depression. Stressful experiences affect central serotonergic activity and act as a risk factor for depression; this can be modelled preclinically. In adult male C57BL/6J mice, 15-day chronic social stress (CSS) leads to depression-relevant behavioural states, including increased aversion and reduced reward sensitivity. Based on this evidence, here we investigated CSS effects on 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, and 5-HT2C receptor binding in discrete brain regions using in vitro quantitative autoradiography with selective radioligands. In addition, mRNA expression of Htr1a, 2a, 2c and Slc6a4 (5-HT transporter) was measured by quantitative PCR. Relative to controls, the following effects were observed in CSS mice: 5-HT1A receptor binding was markedly increased in the dorsal raphe nucleus (136%); Htr1a mRNA expression was increased in raphe nuclei (19%), medial prefrontal cortex (35%), and hypothalamic para- and periventricular nuclei (21%) and ventral medial nucleus (38%). 5-HT2A receptor binding was decreased in the amygdala (48%) and ventral tegmental area (60%); Htr2a mRNA expression was increased in the baso-lateral amygdala (116%). 5-HT2C receptor binding was decreased in the dorsal raphe nucleus (42%). Slc6a4 mRNA expression was increased in the raphe (59%). The present findings add to the translational evidence that chronic social stress impacts on the central serotonergic system in a region- and receptor-specific manner, and that this altered state of the serotonergic system contributes to stress-induced dysfunctions in emotional processing.

Abstract:Chronic stress underlies the etiology of both major depressive disorder (MDD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), two highly prevalent and debilitating conditions with high rates of co-morbidity. However, it is not fully understood how the brain and gut bi-directionally communicate during stress to impact intestinal homeostasis and stress-relevant behaviours. Using the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model, we find that stressed mice display greater intestinal permeability and circulating levels of the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) compared to unstressed control (CON) mice. Interestingly, the microbiota in the colon also exhibit elevated LPS biosynthesis gene expression following CSDS. Additionally, CSDS triggers an increase in pro-inflammatory colonic IFNγ+ Th1 cells and a decrease in IL4+ Th2 cells compared to CON mice, and this gut inflammation contributes to stress-induced intestinal barrier permeability and social avoidance behaviour. We next investigated the role of enteric neurons and identified that noradrenergic dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH)+ neurons in the colon are activated by CSDS, and that their ablation protects against gut pathophysiology and disturbances in social behaviour. Retrograde tracing from the colon identified a population of corticotropin-releasing hormone-expressing (CRH+) neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) that innervate the colon and are activated by stress. Chemogenetically activating these PVH CRH+ neurons is sufficient to induce gut inflammation, barrier permeability, and social avoidance behaviour, while inhibiting these cells prevents these effects following exposure to CSDS. Thus, we define a stress-activated brain-to-gut circuit that confers colonic inflammation, leading to impaired intestinal barrier function, and consequent behavioural deficits.
Chronic social instability stress in female rats: A potential animal model for female depression

Abstract:Epidemiological studies demonstrate that affective disorders are at least twice as common in women as in men, but surprisingly, very few preclinical studies have been conducted on female experimental animals. Therefore, the necessity of developing valid animal models for studying the pathophysiology of stress-related disorders in women is obvious. Chronic social stress has the potential to induce depression in humans and therefore we characterize here a chronic social instability stress paradigm in female rats. This consists of a 4-week period with alternating stressful social situations, including phases of isolation and crowding, in an unpredictable manner. At the physiological level, increased adrenal weight and plasma corticosterone levels indicated hyperactivity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. Elevated plasma luteinizing hormone and disruption of the estrus cycle together with increased serum prolactin levels revealed disrupted regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. Body temperature regulation was affected during the last week of stress such that stressed rats reduced their body temperature less during the rest phase than the controls, thus exhibiting a flattened temperature curve. Behaviorally, chronically stressed rats showed reduced sucrose preference and food intake. However, we did not observe any effect of stress on performance in the forced swim test and hippocampal neurotrophin levels were similarly unaffected. Our results indicate that, by using this social instability paradigm, female rats can be kept under chronic stress for weeks without habituation, and that ultimately the animals develop a depressive-like phenotype. This model may provide a valuable tool for further analyses of the neurobiology of stress-related disorders in women and has the potential to serve as a paradigm for screening novel antidepressant drugs with special efficacy in women.

Abstract:Anxiety and depressive disorders are closely associated; however, the pathophysiology of these disorders remains poorly understood. Further exploration of the mechanisms involved in anxiety and depression such as the stress response may provide new knowledge that will contribute to our understanding of these disorders. Fifty-eight 8–12-week-old C57BL6 mice were separated into experimental groups by sex as follows: male controls (n = 14), male restraint stress (n = 14), female controls (n = 15) and female restraint stress (n = 15). These mice were taken through a 4-week randomised chronic restraint stress protocol, and their behaviour, as well as tryptophan metabolism and synaptic proteins, were measured in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Adrenal catecholamine regulation was also measured. The female mice showed greater anxiety-like behaviour than their male counterparts. Tryptophan metabolism was unaffected by stress, but some basal sex characteristics were noted. Synaptic proteins were reduced in the hippocampus in stressed females but increased in the prefrontal cortex of all female mice. These changes were not found in any males. Finally, the stressed female mice showed increased catecholamine biosynthesis capability, but this effect was not found in males. Future studies in animal models should consider these sex differences when evaluating mechanisms related to chronic stress and depression.

Molecular and cellular mechanisms for differential effects of chronic social isolation stress in males and females

Abstract:Chronic social isolation stress during adolescence induces susceptibility for neuropsychiatric disorders. Here we show that 5-week post-weaning isolation stress induces sex-specific behavioral abnormalities and neuronal activity changes in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), basal lateral amygdala (BLA), and ventral tegmental area (VTA). Chemogenetic manipulation, optogenetic recording, and in vivo calcium imaging identify that the PFC to BLA pathway is causally linked to heightened aggression in stressed males, and the PFC to VTA pathway is causally linked to social withdrawal in stressed females. Isolation stress induces genome-wide transcriptional alterations in a region-specific manner. Particularly, the upregulated genes in BLA of stressed males are under the control of activated transcription factor CREB, and CREB inhibition in BLA normalizes gene expression and reverses aggressive behaviors. On the other hand, neuropeptide Hcrt (Hypocretin/Orexin) is among the top-ranking downregulated genes in VTA of stressed females, and Orexin-A treatment rescues social withdrawal. These results have revealed molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for stress-related mental illness.

Abstract:This study aimed to help to understand the influence of stress on depression, which reflects the social environments of especially solitary life and the increasing prevalence of depressive disorders. To determine the distinguishable features of two-representative animal models of stress-induced depressive disorder, we compared isolation stress (IS) and unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS). After 4-week of stress, both models showed significant depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in an open field test (OFT; p < 0.01 for IS, p < 0.01 for UCMS), forced swimming test (FST; p < 0.01 for IS, p < 0.01 for UCMS), and tail suspension test (TST; p < 0.01 for IS, p < 0.05 for UCMS) along with alterations in serum corticosterone levels, serotonin activity in the dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN) and microglial activity in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus ( p < 0.05 for both parameters). In a comparison of the two stress models, IS strongly induced depressive and anxiety features, as indicated by all parameters: behavior test scores ( p < 0.05 for OFT, FST, and TST), serum corticosterone levels ( p < 0.05), immunohistological alterations for serotonin activity ( p < 0.05) and microglial activity ( p = 0.072). Our results indicate the suitability of IS for the development of animal models of depressive disorders and may reveal the medical impact of social isolation environment in modern society.

Abstract:Introduction: Chronic exposure to social defeat stress (SDS) has been used to investigate the neurobiology of depressive- and anxiety-like responses and mnemonic processes. We hypothesized that these affective, emotional, and cognitive consequences induced by SDS are regulated via glutamatergic neurons located in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), amygdaloid complex, and hippocampus in mice. Methods: Here, we investigated the influence of chronic SDS on (i) the avoidance behavior assessed in the social interaction test, (ii) the anxiety-like behavior (e.g., elevated plus-maze, and open field tests) (iii) depressive-like behaviors (e.g., coat state, sucrose splash, nesting building, and novel object exploration tests), (iv) the short-term memory (object recognition test), (v) ΔFosB, CaMKII as well as ΔFosB + CaMKII labeling in neurons located in the BNST, amygdaloid complex, dorsal (dHPC) and the ventral (vHPC) hippocampus. Results: The main results showed that the exposure of mice to SDS (a) increased defensive and anxiety-like behaviors and led to memory impairment without eliciting clear depressive-like or anhedonic effects; (b) increased ΔFosB + CaMKII labeling in BNST and amygdala, suggesting that both areas are strongly involved in the modulation of this type of stress; and produced opposite effects on neuronal activation in the vHPC and dHPC, i.e., increasing and decreasing, respectively, ΔFosB labeling. The effects of SDS on the hippocampus suggest that the vHPC is likely related to the increase of defensive- and anxiety-related behaviors, whereas the dHPC seems to modulate the memory impairment. Discussion: Present findings add to a growing body of evidence indicating the involvement of glutamatergic neurotransmission in the circuits that modulate emotional and cognitive consequences induced by social defeat stress.

Abstract:Depression affects 20% of the general population and is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with a strong female prevalence. Current pharmacotherapies have significant limitations, and one third of patients are unresponsive. Male Wistar-Kyoto rats exposed to chronic mild stress (CMS) were recently proposed as a model to study antidepressant resistance. However, sex differences and interindividual vulnerability to stress are yet unexplored in this model. We aimed to investigate these in the context of the behavioural impact of CMS in the sucrose preference test, elevated plus maze (EPM), forced swim test (FST), open field test and daily locomotor activity rhythms, in male and female WKY rats exposed or not to a 4-week CMS protocol. CMS-exposed animals were clustered through K-means into subgroups based on the EPM and FST results. In both sexes, one subgroup behaved similarly to non-stressed animals and was labelled stress-non vulnerable; the second exhibited less open arms exploration in the EPM and higher immobility in the FST and was named stress-vulnerable. Vulnerable males presented phase delay in daily locomotor activity following CMS, but no significant rhythm could be determined in females. CMS-exposed males of both groups showed hyperlocomotion in reaction to novelty and slower weight gain through the course of CMS, while CMS-exposed females showed smaller sucrose intake. Unexpectedly, CMS did not affect sucrose preference. Our findings strengthen the view that in models of psychiatric pathologies based on stress exposure it is important to consider the effect of sex and to differentiate the non vulnerable and vulnerable subpopulations.

Abstract:Chronic environmental stress and traumatic social experiences induce maladaptive behavioral changes and is a risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD) and various anxiety-related psychiatric disorders. Clinical studies and animal models of chronic stress have reported that symptom severity is correlated with innate immune responses and upregulation of neuroinflammatory cytokine signaling in brain areas implicated in mood regulation (mPFC; medial Prefrontal Cortex). Despite increasing evidence implicating impairments of neuroplasticity and synaptic signaling deficits into the pathophysiology of stress-related mental disorders, how microglia may modulate neuronal homeostasis in response to chronic stress has not been defined. Here, using the repeated social defeat stress (RSDS) mouse model we demonstrate that microglial-induced inflammatory responses are regulating neuronal plasticity associated with psychosocial stress. Specifically, we show that chronic stress induces a rapid activation and proliferation of microglia as well as macrophage infiltration in the mPFC, and these processes are spatially related to neuronal activation. Moreover, we report a significant association of microglial inflammatory responses with susceptibility or resilience to chronic stress. In addition, we find that exposure to chronic stress exacerbates phagocytosis of synaptic elements and deficits in neuronal plasticity. Importantly, by utilizing two different CSF1R inhibitors (the brain penetrant PLX5622 and the non-penetrant PLX73086) we highlight a crucial role for microglia (and secondarily macrophages) in catalyzing the pathological manifestations linked to psychosocial stress in the mPFC and the resulting behavioral deficits usually associated with depression.
