Abstract:Nacre, a natural armor, exhibits prominent penetration resistance against predatory attacks. Unraveling its hierarchical toughening mechanisms and damage-tolerance design strategies may provide significant inspiration for the pursuit of high-performance artificial armors. In this work, relationships between the structure and mechanical performance of nacre were investigated. The results show that other than their brick-and-mortar structure, individual nacre tablets significantly contribute to the damage localization of nacre. Affected by intracrystalline organics, the tablets exhibit a unique fracture behavior. The synergistic action of the nanoscale deformation mechanisms increases the energy dissipation efficiency of the tablets and contributes to the preservation of the structural and functional integrity of the shell.
Multiscale Structural Design and Fracture Control of High-Performance Biomimetic Materials

Abstract:Bioinspired architectural design for composites with much higher impact-resistance and fracture-resistance than that of individual constituent remains a major challenge for engineers and scientists. Inspired by the survival war between the mantis shrimps and abalones, we develop multiscale mechanical methods to design structures and control fractures in high-performance biomimetic materials. The first point is the optimization design of impact-resistant nacre-like materials [1-4]. By a combination of simulation, additive manufacturing, and drop tower testing we revealed that, at a critical interfacial strength or a critical prestress, the competition between intralayer cracks and interlayer delamination, or the synergistic effect between the prestress-enhanced tablets sliding and prestress-weakened structural integrality, result in optimized impact resistance of nacre-like structures. Furthermore, the interfacial strength design and the prestressing strategy were easily implemented to a designed nacre-inspired separator to enhance the impact resistance of lithium batteries. Later, we designed a discontinuous fibrous Bouligand (DFB) architecture [5], whose fracture-energy dissipations are insensitive to initial crack-orientations and show optimized values at critical pitch angles. Fracture mechanics analyses demonstrate that the hybrid toughening mechanisms of crack twisting and crack bridging mode arising from DFB architecture enable excellent fracture-resistance with crack-orientation insensitivity. The compromise in competition of energy dissipations between crack twisting and crack bridging is identified as the origin of maximum fracture energy at a critical pitch angle. We further illustrate that the optimized fracture energy can be achieved by tuning fracture energy of crack bridging, pitch angles, fiber lengths and twist angles distribution in DFB composites. Our findings shed light on how nature have evolved materials to exceptional impact resistance and fracture toughness, and provide the generic design strategies for bioinspired formidable impactresistant and fracture-resistant materials.
Long‐term survival effects of GDNF on neonatal rat facial motoneurons after axotomy

Abstract:GLIAL cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has survival promoting effects on axotomized neonatal motoneurons. We examined how long it could sustain motoneurons after postnatal day 0 (PND) facial nerve axotomy. GDNF, or cytochrome c as a negative control, were locally administered by Gelfoam implants at the time of axotomy and some were re-implanted on PND 14. The surviving motoneurons were quantified on PND 14 and 28. GDNF completely rescued lesioned motoneurons from axotomy-induced cell death at 14 days and was still effective (about 40%) at PND 28. GDNF also prevented axotomy-induced atrophy at both PND 14 and 28, indicating that the neurotrophic effects of GDNF on neonatal motoneurons are long-term.

Abstract:Studying the structure–property relation of biological materials can not only provide insight into the physical mechanisms underlying their superior properties and functions but also benefit the design and fabrication of advanced biomimetic materials. In this paper, we present a microstructure-based fracture mechanics model to investigate the toughening effect due to the crack-bridging mechanism of platelets. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates the crucial contribution of this mechanism to the high toughness of nacre. It is found that the fracture toughness of nacre exhibits distinct dependence on the sizes of platelets, and the optimized ranges for the thickness and length of platelets required to achieve higher fracture toughness are given. In addition, the effects of such factors as the mechanical properties of the organic phase (or interfaces), the effective elastic modulus of nacre, and the stacking pattern of platelets are also examined. Finally, some guidelines for the biomimetic design of novel materials are proposed based on our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Nacre with a combination of superior strength and toughness is one of the best natural body armors due to its unique brick-and-mortar structure, which is recently regarded as the model system for the lightweight and high impact performance composite design. However, most of the studies of nacreous structure focused on static loadings or simple one-dimensional dynamic load. Our study presents 3D finite element simulation, 3D printing and drop-tower impact testing to reveal the role of interfacial strength and impact velocity in impact resistance of the nacreous structure. An optimal interfacial strength is observed at which the impact resistance reaches a maximum. Sorting of various evolving damage patterns demonstrates that the simultaneous intralayer radial cracks propagation and interlayer delamination lead to a maximal energy dissipation in the presence of the optimal interfacial strength. The phase diagram of damage patterns depending on interfacial strength and impact velocity reveals that the optimal interfacial strength decreases with increasing impact velocity. This study demonstrates that the impact-resistance of nacreous structure under different impact velocities can be enhanced by tuning the interfacial strength, and gives some guidance for advanced protective materials designs.

Abstract:Bioinspired ceramic‐polymer composites featuring gradient structures similar to natural armors and brick‐and‐mortar architectures akin to nacre are fabricated using a facile approach. These composites exhibit notable mechanical asymmetry with position‐specific damage characteristics and toughening mechanisms. The integration of a stiff exterior and a compliant interior, mirroring the configuration of natural armors, results in a notable enhancement in damage tolerance. The evolution of natural armor materials has led to gradient structures with specific architectures to achieve high damage tolerance, thus offering valuable inspiration for the design of man‐made materials. Here, bioinspired gradient composites with a nacre‐like brick‐and‐mortar architecture are fabricated by infiltrating a polymer phase into porous ceramic scaffolds with position‐specific ceramic content. These composites demonstrate an integrated structure with notable several‐fold variations in local hardness and modulus across the thickness. The asymmetric mechanical properties and toughening mechanisms of the composites are investigated and compared to those of uniform composites. Specifically, when loaded along the direction of decreasing stiffness – resembling the typical loading configuration of natural armors, the gradient composites exhibit superior damage tolerance compared to the opposite direction and a uniform composite with equivalent ceramic content. This is attributed to the decreased peak stress, broader stress distribution, and increased deformation capacity, along with enhanced toughening effects that impede crack growth through mechanisms of crack deflection, crack bridging by uncracked ligaments, together with their frictional pull‐out from crack surfaces. This study deepens the understanding of the damage tolerance of gradient materials and offers insights for the bioinspired design of highly damage‐tolerant materials.

Abstract:Nacre is generally regarded as tough body armor, but it was often smashed by predators with a certain striking speed. Nacre-like architectures have been demonstrated to dissipate abundant energy by tablets sliding at static or specific low-speed loads, but whether they’re still impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities remains unclear. Here, we find an anomalous phenomenon that nacre-like structures show superior energy-dissipation ability only in a narrow range of low impact velocities, while they exhibit lower impact resistance than laminated structures when impact velocity exceeds a critical value. This is because the tablets sliding in nacre-like structure occurs earlier and wider at low impact velocities, while it becomes localized at excessive impact velocities. Such anomalous phenomenon remains under different structural sizes and boundary conditions. It further inspires us to propose a hybrid architecture design strategy that achieves optimal impact resistance in a wide range of impact velocities.

Abstract:Nacre is well known for its high strength and toughness owing to its ingenious “brick-and-mortar” microstructure. However, its impact resistance has not been studied as well as its static properties, even though protecting fragile organs from external dynamic loadings is one of its most important functions. The current work systematically studied the impact resistant behaviors and energy absorption mechanisms of nacre-inspired composite plates with the “brick-and-mortar” organization of three typical “brick” reinforcements seen in nacre, namely, flat, dovetail and inverse-dovetail. Through the finite element method simulations, the impact stiffness, energy absorption capacity and primary working mechanisms of the composite plates during impact were analyzed. The results show that the inverse-dovetail microstructure is superior in impact stiffness in the projectile rebounding situation, while the dovetail microstructure is better for its relatively higher energy absorption capacity in both the rebounding and perforation scenarios. In the rebounding scenario the primary energy consuming mechanism is plastic deformation, whereas it converts to spalling and fragmentation in the perforation situation. The tablet aspect ratio plays a significant role in tuning the composites’ impact resistant performance and working mechanisms. These findings and conclusions provide meaningful insights into the design of bioinspired composites with high impact resistance.

Abstract:Dynamic breaking and reforming of sacrificial bonds in sliding interfaces of biological and bioinspired heterostructures could greatly enhance fracture resistance by providing a self-healing energy dissipation process. Nevertheless, how interfacial self-healing behaviors and nonuniform stress transfer act in concert over multiple length scales and boost fracture toughness remains elusive. Here, a multiscale fracture mechanics model for bioinspired staggered heterostructures was developed by integrating interfacial self-healing behaviors, RVE's deformation responses, and macroscopic crack bridging. We found two critical brick sizes between which the fracture toughness enhanced by interfacial self-healing processes surpasses that by ideal elastic-plastic interface. The simultaneous increased crack-bridging stress and opening displacement induced by interfacial nonuniform deformation modes, including elastic, strengthening and sliding stages between the two critical sizes, are identified to enhance the fracture resistance. Moreover, our model provides parametric guidelines for optimizing bioinspired fracture-resistant structural materials with self-healing interfaces.
How to select discrete or continuous interfaces in biological materials to achieve a strength-toughness tradeoff

Abstract:Many biological materials, such as nacre, bone and turtle shell cuticle, can successfully achieve a tradeoff between strength and toughness, which is attributed to the stacked microstructure formed by soft and hard phases. However, among these biological materials, the soft phase-formed interfaces of some biological materials are continuous, while those of some are discrete. In this paper, a shear lag model considering an elasto-plastic discrete interface is established to reveal the selection mechanism of two kinds of interfaces in different biological materials, thus solving the tradeoff between strength and toughness. Based on the shear lag model, theoretical solutions of the stress and displacement in the hard phase and the shear stress in the soft interfacial phase are obtained for a general case with any number of interfacial bonding segments. The relationship between the effective stress and effective strain of the representative volume element (RVE) is further achieved, with the help of which the strength and toughness of staggered bio-composites can be analyzed. Corresponding experiments based on 3D-printed samples are further performed to verify the theoretical predictions. It is found that, when the hard phase and soft phase have comparable mechanical properties, like those in turtle shell cuticle, the interface guarantees a high load transfer efficiency to generate the ultimate stress in the platelet, while its discrete distribution leads to a higher interfacial shear stress level than that in a continuously bonded interface. Such a material-structure co-action induces a hybrid damage mode of hard phase fracture and soft phase failure, consequently leading to an excellent strength-toughness tradeoff. However, if the mechanical properties of two phases differ significantly, like those in nacreous materials or bone, a discrete interface should result in a unique damage mode of interface failure and a low utilization efficiency of hard phase. Instead, a continuous interface in this case is more conducive to obtain a tradeoff between strength and toughness. All the results demonstrate that biological materials choose different interface structures to meet the requirements of strength and toughness matching, based on the differences in the mechanical properties of soft and hard phases. Such a selection mechanism provides a direct reference for the optimal design of artificial composites with an excellent strength-toughness match.

Comparative Study on High Strain Rate Fracture Modelling Using the Application of Explosively Driven Cylinder Rings

Abstract:The effect of different constitutive modelling choices is crucial under a high strain rate as encountered in ballistic applications. Natural fragmentation of explosively driven cylinder rings is chosen as a simplified example to describe the ability of numerical simulations to describe fractures. The main research interests are the importance of (i) material imperfections, (ii) the accuracy of fracture models vs. damage models, (iii) the plasticity algorithm (stress update), (iv) the introduction of a triaxiality cutoff criterion to the damage models, and (v) different constitutive models (plasticity and damage). Due to the complexity of the propagation and coalescense of multiple cracks in classical methods, smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is used as a tailor-made method to discretise the model. An elasto-plasticity model, a damage model and an equation of state describe the material behaviour. The required material parameters are determined based on stress-strain curves from quasi-static and dynamic tests. The Johnson-Cook model, with and without a modification of the strain rate term, and the Rusinek-Klepaczko model are used to describe plasticity. These plasticity models are combined either with the Johnson-Cook, the Lemaitre, or the Dolinski-Rittel damage model and the Mie-Grüneisen equation of state. The numerical results show that (i) a random distribution of initial damage increases irregularity of cracks, and gives more realistic fragment shapes, (ii) a coupling of plasticity model and fracture criterion has only a small effect on the fracture behaviour, (iii) using an iterative plasticity solver has a positive effect on the fracture behaviour, although this effect is marginal, (iv) adding a triaxiality cutoff criterion to the damage models improves the predicted fragment masses in the numerical simulations significantly, and (v) good accordance between experiments and numerical simulations are found for the Dolinski-Rittel and Lemaitre damage model with both plasticity models.

Abstract:Ferroelectric memories are the most promising alternative to traditional embedded nonvolatile memories, such as flash and EEPROMs, because of their fast read/write cycle time, non-volatile data retention, low voltage/low power operation and low number of additional masks for fabrication (+2). An embedded ferroelectric memory (FRAM) has been developed using a 1.5 V, 130 nm 5 metal layer Cu/FSG logic process. The only modification to the logic process was the addition of a ferroelectric process module consisting of two additional masks (FECAP, VIAO) immediately before MET1. The ferroelectric was 70 nm Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) deposited by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The electrical properties of a 8 Mb 1T-1C embedded FRAM were characterized. This eFRAM process has been used to simultaneously fabricate a digital signal processor (DSP) using the eFRAM process flow and the operating frequency is nearly the same relative to the CMOS baseline. This eFRAM process flow creates a technology platform that enables ultra-low-power devices.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. The performance of composite materials and structures at high-velocity impacts reaching or exceeding their ballistic limit is crucial for assessing their strength and safety in aerospace applications. In this highly transient impact regime, composite materials are subject to multiple complex failure modes and their properties are susceptible to strain rate effects, making very challenging the simulation and understanding of their ballistic impact performance. This study presents: (1) a multi-scale computational framework for predicting the ballistic limit of composite plates, and (2) experimental results of ballistic impacts on carbon/epoxy plates. The multi-scale model uses a micromechanical approach to account for strain-rate dependency, to calculate micro-stress effects on the matrix and fiber properties, and to predict their coupled effect on effective composite properties. Intralaminar damage initiation and evolution are identified using the maximum stress criterion, but the degradation of properties in the matrix and fibers is predicted with the micromechanics model. Mixed-mode damage laws are implemented to simulate delamination, which guarantees accurate and reliable results. The proposed multi-scale model has been implemented and integrated into ABAQUS/Explicit (VUMAT). Experimental results from high-velocity steel ball impacts on woven IM-65 Carbon/RTM6 epoxy composite plates conducted on a high-speed impact test bench are also presented including non-destructive evaluation of the types of damage and failure. The experimental results are finally used to validate the model predictions for the ballistic limit and the predicted types of damage and failure.

Abstract:<p>Catastrophic failure of materials and structures due to unstable crack growth could be prevented if facture toughness could be enhanced at will through structural design, but how can this be possible if fracture toughness is a material constant related to energy dissipation in the vicinity of a propagating crack tip. Here we draw inspiration from the deformation behavior of biomolecules in load bearing biological materials, which have been evolved with a large extensibility and a high breaking strength beyond their elastic limit, and introduce an effective biomimetic strategy to enhance fracture toughness of a structure through an intrinsic to extrinsic (ITE) transition. In the ITE transition, toughness starts as an intrinsic parameter at the basic material level, but by designing a protein-like effective stress–strain behavior the toughness at the system level becomes an extrinsic parameter that increases with the system size without bound. This phenomenon is demonstrated through a combination of numerical simulations, analytic modeling and experiments, and leads to a biomimetic strategy which can be broadly adopted to enhance fracture toughness in engineering systems.</p>

Abstract:The high fracture toughness of mollusk nacre is predominantly attributed to the structure-associated extrinsic mechanisms such as platelet sliding and crack deflection. While the nacre-mimetic structures are widely adopted in artificial ceramics, the extrinsic mechanisms are often weakened by the relatively low tensile strength of the platelets with a large aspect ratio, which makes the fracture toughness of these materials much lower than expected. Here, it is demonstrated that the fracture toughness of artificial nacre materials with high inorganic contents can be improved by residual stress-induced platelet strengthening, which can catalyze more effective extrinsic toughening mechanisms that are specific to the nacre-mimetic structures. Thereby, while the absolute fracture toughness of the materials is not comparable with advanced ceramic-based composites, the toughness amplification factor of the material reaches 16.1 ± 1.1, outperforming the state-of-the-art biomimetic ceramics. The results reveal that, with the merit of nacre-mimetic structural designs, the overall fracture toughness of the artificial nacre can be improved by the platelet strengthening through extrinsic toughening mechanisms, although the intrinsic fracture toughness may decrease at platelet level due to the strengthening. It is anticipated that advanced structural ceramics with exceeding performance can be fabricated through these unconventional strategies.

Atomistic And Continuum Studies Of Flaw Tolerant Nanostructures In Biological Systems

Abstract:Bone-like biological materials have achieved superior mechanical properties through hierarchical composite structures of mineral and protein. Geckos, and many insects have evolved hierarchical surface structures to achieve superior adhesion capabilities. What is the underlying principle of achieving superior mechanical properties of materials? Using joint atomistic-continuum modeling, we show that the nanometer scale plays a key role in allowing these biological systems to achieve such properties, and suggest that the principle of flaw tolerance and design for robustness may have had an overarching influence on the evolution of the bulk nanostructure of bone-like materials and the surface nanostructure of gecko-like animal species. We illustrate that if the characteristic dimension of materials is below a critical length scale on the order of several nanometers, Griffith theory of fracture no longer holds. An important consequence of this finding is that materials with such nano-substructures become flaw-tolerant, as the stress concentration at crack tips disappears and failure always occurs at the theoretical strength of materials, regardless of defects. The atomistic simulations complement continuum analysis and reveal a smooth transition between Griffith modes of failure via crack propagation to uniform bond rupture at theoretical strength below a nanometer critical length. This modeling resolves a long-standing paradox of fracture theories, and these results have important consequences for understanding failure of small-scale materials. Additional investigations focus on shape optimization of adhesion systems. We illustrate that optimal adhesion can be achieved when the surface of contact elements assumes an optimal shape. The results suggest that optimal adhesion can be achieved either by length scale reduction, or by optimization of the contact shape. Whereas change in shape does not lead to robustness, reducing the dimension results in robust adhesion devices.

Abstract:Compressive response of the different bioinspired structures studied and the failure aspect of each one. Nature is a never‐ending fount of inspiration to solve engineering problems. In light of this, the goal of this work is to propose and study structures that mimic materials found in nature, more specifically nacre. These structures were designed to be manufactured using fused deposition modeling since this is an accessible way to reproduce complex geometries. The manufactured biomimetic materials were tested in uniaxial compression in two different directions. In addition, an elastoplastic numerical analysis was used to better understand the compressive behavior of the studied structures. The comparison between experimental and numerical analysis reveals that the overall behavior results from two competing mechanisms, that is, an increase in stiffness due to strain‐hardening and a stiffness decay promoted by damage propagation. Moreover, it was possible to see that the structures continue to bear load while they retain the structural integrity, which is dominated by the crushing strength of each type of structure. Highlights Additive manufactured nacre‐inspired structures were proposed. Influence of different geometries in the compressive behavior was assessed. Behavior was linked to competition between strain‐hardening and damage growth. Load‐bearing capacity was related to the structural integrity of elements. The crack deflection mechanism was identified in some specimens.

Flaw Tolerant Bulk and Surface Nanostructures of Biological Systems.

Abstract:Bone-like biological materials have achieved superior mechanical properties through hierarchical composite structures of mineral and protein. Gecko and many insects have evolved hierarchical surface structures to achieve extraordinary adhesion capabilities. We show that the nanometer scale plays a key role in allowing these biological systems to achieve their superior properties. We suggest that the principle of flaw tolerance may have had an overarching influence on the evolution of the bulk nanostructure of bone-like materials and the surface nanostructure of gecko-like animal species. We demonstrate that the nanoscale sizes allow the mineral nanoparticles in bone to achieve optimum fracture strength and the spatula nanoprotrusions in Gecko to achieve optimum adhesion strength. In both systems, strength optimization is achieved by restricting the characteristic dimension of the basic structure components to nanometer scale so that crack-like flaws do not propagate to break the desired structural link. Continuum modeling and atomistic simulations have been conducted to verify the concept of flaw tolerance at nanoscale. A simple tension-shear chain model has been developed to model the stiffness and fracture energy of biocomposites. It is found that, while the problem of low toughness of mineral crystals is alleviated by restricting the crystal size to nanoscale, the problem of low modulus of protein has been solved by adopting a large aspect ratio for the mineral platelets. The fracture energy of biocomposites is found to be proportional to the effective shear strain and the effective shear stress in protein along its path of deformation to fracture. The bioengineered mineral-protein composites are ideally suited for fracture energy dissipation as the winding paths of protein domain unfolding and slipping along protein-mineral interfaces lead to very large effective strain before fracture. The usual entropic elasticity of biopolymers may involve relatively small effective stress and may not be able to ensure simultaneous domain unfolding and interface slipping. Cross-linking mechanisms such as Ca++ induced sacrificial bonds in bone can increase the shear stress in protein and along the protein-mineral interface, effectively converting the behavior of entropic elasticity to one that resembles metal plasticity. The sacrificial bond mechanism not only builds up a large effective stress in protein but also allows protein deformation and interface slipping to occur simultaneously under similar stress levels, making it possible to engineer a very long range of deformation under significant stress in order to maximize energy absorption. Optimization of mineral platelets near theoretical strength is found to be crucial for allowing a large effective stress to be built up in protein via cross-linking mechanisms such as Ca++ induced sacrificial bonds. Similarly, for gecko adhesion, the strength optimization of individual spatulas is found to play a critical role in enhancing adhesion energy at the higher hierarchical level.

Abstract:It has been said that 'God invented plasticity, but the Devil invented fracture!' Both mechanisms represent the two prime modes of structural failure, respectively, plastic collapse and the rupture/breaking of a component, but the concept of developing materials with enhanced resistance to fracture can be difficult. This is because fracture resistance invariably involves a compromise-between strength and ductility, between strength and toughness-fundamentally leading to a 'conflict' between nano-/micro-structural damage and the mechanisms of toughening. Here, we examine the two major classes of such toughening: (i) intrinsic toughening, which occurs ahead of a crack tip and is motivated by plasticity-this is the principal mode of fracture resistance in ductile materials, and (ii) extrinsic toughening, which occurs at, or in the wake of, a crack tip and is associated with crack-tip shielding-this is generally the sole mode of fracture resistance in brittle materials. We briefly examine how these distinct mechanistic processes have been used to toughen synthetic materials-intrinsically in gradient materials and in multiple principal-element metallic alloys with the example of metallic glasses and high-entropy alloys, and extrinsically in ceramics with the example of ceramic-matrix composites-in comparison to Nature which has been especially adept in creating biological/natural materials which are toughened by one or both mechanistic classes, despite often consisting of constituents with meagre mechanical properties. The success of Nature has been driven by its ability to cultivate the development of materials with multiple length-scale hierarchical structures that display ingenious gradients and structural adaptability, a philosophy which we need to emulate and more importantly learn to synthesize to make structural materials of the future with unprecedented combinations of mechanical properties. Fracture metamaterials with on-demand crack paths enabled by bending

Abstract:In many scenarios -- when we bite food or during a crash -- fracture is inevitable. Finding solutions to steer fracture to mitigate its impact or turn it into a purposeful functionality, is therefore crucial. Strategies using composites, changes in chemical composition or crystal orientation, have proven to be very efficient, but the crack path control remains limited and has not been achieved in load-bearing structures. Here, we introduce fracture metamaterials consisting of slender elements whose bending enables large elastic deformation as fracture propagates. This interplay between bending and fracture enables tunable energy dissipation and the design of on-demand crack paths of arbitrary complexity. To this end, we use topology optimisation to create unit cells with anisotropic fracture energy, which we then tile up to realize fracture metamaterials with uniform density that we 3D-print. The thin ligaments that constitute the unit cells confer them a strikingly distinct response in tension and shear, and we show that by controlling the orientation and layout of the unit cells the sequential progress of the crack can be controlled, making the fracture path arbitrarily tortuous. This tortuosity increases the energy dissipation of the metamaterial without changing its stiffness. Using bespoke arrangements of unit cells, metamaterials can have on-demand fracture paths of arbitrary complexity. Our findings bring a new perspective on inelastic deformations in mechanical metamaterials, with potential applications in areas as diverse as the food industry, structural design, and for shock and impact damping.
