Abstract:Due to its excellent physical properties and inert chemical reaction activity of C60, it is possible to synthesize solution-processing polymer containing C60 utilizing the inclusive characteristics of polymer chain segment, and then to prepare organic/inorganic nanocomposites with enhanced some key properties. In order to harvest the visible light of TiO2 effectively the surface modification of TiO2 nanotube with polymer containing C60 was carried out in this study. A series of characterizations were performed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, UV-Vis (Ultra-violet visible spectroscopy), XRD patterns analysis. The results showed that the UV-Vis of resulting nanocomposite was almost covered the whole region of visible light. The photoconductivity response to visible light with low-power were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate with casting method. The results indicated that the photoresponses of two kinds of polymer containing C60 to weak visible light emerged photo-switching behavior, its recoverability was also rapidly, and the photoresponse of TiO2 nanotube modified with two kinds of polymer containing C60 to weak visible light also changed greatly. This illustrated that the organic-inorganic nanocomposites showed good activities to weak visible light. Photocatalytic efficiency was examined by selecting typical organic pollutants, some good results were obtained. It may develop organic-inorganic nanocomposites with external stimuli response, photocatalyst, et al.
Enhanced Photocatalytic and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Tio2 Nanorod Arrays Sensitized with Cds Nanoplates

Abstract:TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) sensitized with CdS nanoplates (NPLs) were fabricated via a two-step method. Vertically aligned TiO2 NRAs were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and followed by depositing CdS NPLs on TiO2 NRAs via successive ion layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) method. Their surface morphology, structure, photoelectrochemical, and photocatalytic properties were investigated. UV-via absorption spectra suggest that the absorption peaks shift from the ultraviolet region (408nm) to the visible region (580nm) when compared to pure TiO2 nanorod arrays. Additionally, upon irradiation of visible light, the photocurrent response of CdS NPL sensitized TiO2 NRAs after 8 SILAR cycles significantly improved, displaying an optimal photocurrent density of 168.5μA/cm2, which is much higher than that of the unsensitized samples (48.1μA/cm2). They also exhibited excellent photocatalytic properties where the degradation rate of methyl orange under visible light showed an enhancement of 92.4% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs. The mechanisms of the enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 nanorod arrays sensitized with CdS nanoplates are discussed in detail.
Highly-enhanced Performance of TiO 2 Nanotubes Attached with CdS quantum Dots

Abstract:In order to utilize the visible light of TiO2 effectively, the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite was synthesized by a hydrothermal approach. Characterization of the prepared products were performed with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The results indicated that the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite exhibited a significant red shift while the CdS quantum dots were attached on the surface of the TiO2 nanotubes. Based on a quartz crystal microbalance array, TiO2 nanotubes and heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite were used to fabricate a chemical prototype device to study the surface and interface properties of the heterostructured nanocomposite. The adsorption properties of the chemical prototype device to some typical organic volatiles were examined under the same micro-environment. The results showed that the attachment of CdS on the TiO2 nanotubes had enhanced the adsorption properties to those organic volatiles greatly. After the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite was casted on the surface of Au interdigital electrodes on flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrates, the photoresponse of the nanocomposite was examined with a low-power visible light source to explore the modification mechanism in detail. It was found that the CdS modification enhanced the photo-current of the TiO2 nanotubes to weak visible light. Not only showing enhanced visible light response, but also possessing excellent adsorption properties to organic volatiles, the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite, has good potential applications in photocatalysts, self-cleaning coatings, photo detectors, chemical and bio-sensors.

Abstract:TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) were hydrothermally grown on transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates, and were converted into nanotubes (NTAs) by hydrothermally in situ etching. Ag nanoparticles (NPLs) were sensitized on the NRAs and NTAs by a simple photodeposition approach (products were denoted as Ag-TiO2 NRAs and NTAs). The Ag-TiO2 NTAs samples possessed a large specific surface area (116 m(2) g(-1)) with Ag NPLs homogeneously dispersed among the TiO2 NTAs. The Ag-TiO2 NTAs exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities (98.8%) in degradation of methyl orange (MO) compared to Ag-TiO2 NRAs (92.6%), TiO2 NTAs (86.2%), and NRAs (81.7%). The enhanced photocatalytic activities can be attributed to the large specific surface area of TiO2 NTAs and strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag NPLs. In addition, Ag-TiO2 NTAs showed easy recovery feature in the recovery process and high durability in the recycling test, which was expected to be an efficient and practical photocatalyst used for waste water treatment. Abstract:A facile and convenient method has been developed to prepare N-doped TiO2 visible light nanocatalysts, which is performed by a solid-state calcination of one-dimensional titanate nanotubes with an inorganic ammonium salt (NH4Cl). The ion-exchange reaction between layered nanotubes and NH4Cl contributes to the phase transition to crystalline TiO2 combined with N doping. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are carried out to study the phase evolution, compositions, and morphologies of obtained samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the N dopant in TiO2 is assigned to the interstitial NHx species. Both the phase transition and N doping are further confirmed by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. All N-doped TiO2 materials exhibit significantly higher visible light activities than that of the parent nanotubes for degrading rhodamine B. In addition, the N-doped TiO2 nanocatalyst holds a strong stability and durability for the removal of organic pollutions.
Significantly Enhanced Visible Light Photoelectrochemical Activity in TiO2 Nanowire Arrays by Nitrogen Implantation

Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO2) represents one of most widely studied materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting but is severely limited by its poor efficiency in the visible light range. Here, we report a significant enhancement of visible light photoactivity in nitrogen-implanted TiO2 (N-TiO2) nanowire arrays. Our systematic studies show that a post-implantation thermal annealing treatment can selectively enrich the substitutional nitrogen dopants, which is essential for activating the nitrogen implanted TiO2 to achieve greatly enhanced visible light photoactivity. An incident photon to electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of ∼10% is achieved at 450 nm in N-TiO2 without any other cocatalyst, far exceeding that in pristine TiO2 nanowires (∼0.2%). The integration of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) cocatalyst with N-TiO2 can further increase the IPCE at 450 nm to ∼17% and deliver an unprecedented overall photocurrent density of 1.9 mA/cm2, by integrating the IPCE spectrum with standard AM 1.5G solar s...

Abstract:A composite Co3O4/Ag/TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) electrode, that subsequently photo-reduction of Ag and thermal decomposition of Co3O4 nanoparticles onto electrochemical anodized TiO2-NTs, was synthesized for enhancement of visible light photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. The visible light response of Co3O4/Ag/TiO2-NTs with highest photocurrent of 0.54 mA/cm(2) was obtained under calcination temperature of 400 degrees C for Co3O4 (311) crystal formation. The Co3O4/Ag/TiO2-NTs electrode provided a remarkable photoconversion efficiency of 0.18% at an on-set potential of 0.44 V which was twice than that of Co3O4/TiO2-NTs electrode (0.06%). The synergetic effect for degradation of nitrobenzene (NB) and reduction of Cr(VI) was studied to analyze the possible mechanism of Co3O4/Ag/TiO2-NTs. It was proposed that Ag nanoparticle acted as bridge transferred the photo-induced electrons from Co3O4 to TiO2-NTs and then largely facilitated the electron-holes separation to enhance the PEC activity. Abstract:We report the controllable electrophoretic fabrication of highly robust, efficient, and benign photoelectrocatalysts based on graphene-quantum-dot sensitized TiO2 nanotube arrays. Their catalytic activities under visible-light irradiation remain steady for continuous cycles (400 min) with a negligible decrease, whereas CdS and CdSe sensitized TiO2 nanotube arrays show a high cycling instability due to serious photooxidization.

Abstract:Titania nanowire arrays have been deposited on Ti foils through direct oxidizing the Ti substrate with aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions containing melamine and nitric acid, and the applicability of such nanowire arrays to back-illuminated dye-sensitized solar cells studied in parallel with titania nanotube arrays on Ti foils. The low-temperature nitrogen adsorption measurement reveals that the film with nanowires 25nm in diameter and 1μm in length possesses a BET specific surface area of 59.0m2g−1, a value much larger than 26m2g−1 calculated for the nanotube with an inner diameter of 80nm, an outer diameter of 120nm and a total length of 3μm. Assuming an indirect transition between band gaps, the nanowire film exhibits a bandgap of 3.1eV, slightly larger than that of 3.0eV for the nanotube one. A detailed electrochemical study suggests that, in comparison with the nanotube film, the nanowire one exhibits much lower saturated photocurrent and poorer conductivity under the Xe-lamp irradiation. However, when utilized to construct back-side illuminated dye-sensitized solar cells, the cell with the 2μm-thick nanowire photoanode possesses significantly higher efficiency than the one with the 3μm-thick nanotube photoanode. The relatively high energy conversion efficiency is contributed to the high specific surface area and the unique mesoporous structure of the titania nanowire arrays, which favors the adsorption of dye molecules.

Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays sensitized with ZnFe2O4 nano-crystals were successfully fabricated by a two-step process of anodization and a vacuum-assistant impregnation method followed by annealing. The sample was studied by an environmental scanning electron microscope, a transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and X-ray diffraction to characterize its morphology and chemical composition. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra and a photoelectrochemical measurement approved that the ZnFe2O4 sensitization enhanced the probability of photoinduced charge separation and extended the range of the photoresponse of TiO2 nanotube arrays from the UV to visible region. In addition, the behaviors of photoinduced charge transfer in a TiO2 nanotube array electrode before and after sensitization by ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals were comparatively studied. The photoluminescence of the TiO2 nanotube array electrode became suppressed, and the surface photovoltage responses on the spectrum were significantly enhanced after the introduction of ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals. The transfer dynamics of the photoinduced charges were observed directly by a transient photovoltage measurement, which revealed a fast charge separation at the interface between ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals and TiO2 nanotubes upon light excitation.

Abstract:g-C3N4 and Bi2O3 were successfully incorporated into TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NT) to produce a composite nanotube material designated as g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity under visible light irradiation with respect to bleaching of methylene blue (MB) and degradation of phenol were determined. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the composite material, g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT, was red-shifted toward a narrower band gap energy (E-g). The valence band (VB) of g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT was shifted to a more positive potential resulting in an increased driving force for water oxidation. The photocurrent generated by g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NTs was approximately 15 times higher and the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE at lambda = 400 nm) was higher than that of the naked TiO2-NTs. This response is attributed to increasing the lifetimes of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. A significantly higher PEC response in terms of the bleaching of MB was observed on g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT. The roles of improved charge separation and subsequent higher electron-transfer efficiencies for in g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT electrodes were examined.
Boron-doped TiO2 Nanotube Array: in Situ Electrochemical Preparation and Study on Its Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Through anodization in a NH4BF4-containing glycerol solution, TiO2 nanotube arrays were obtained and showed characteristics of both boron-doping and double-layer walled structure. Boron doping inhibited the growth of anatase crystals during the annealing process and enhanced the UV-visible light absorption efficiency of the TiO2 nanotube array. For boron-doped inside, the TiO2 nanotube arrays demonstrated improved photocatalytic activities under both UV and visible light irradiation. This work demonstrates the feasibility of electrochemical preparation of a boron-doped TiO2 nanotube array with double-layer walled structure and its potential application for photocatalysis.

Abstract:N-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays were prepared by electrochemical anodization in glycerol electrolyte, followed by electrochemical deposition in NH4Cl solution. An orthogonal experiment was used to optimize the doping conditions. Electrolyte concentration, reaction voltage, and reaction time were the main factors to influence the N-doping effect which was the determinant of the visible range photoresponse. The optimal N-doping conditions were determined as follows: reaction voltage is 3V, reaction time is 2 h, and electrolyte concentration is 0.5 M. The maximal photocurrent enhanced ratio was 30% under white-light irradiation. About 58% improvement of photocatalytic efficiency was achieved in the Rhodamine B degradation experiment by N doping. The kinetic constant of the N-doped TNT arrays sample was almost twice higher than that of the undoped sample. Further analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy supported that electrochemical deposition is a simple and efficient method for N doping into TiO2 nanotube arrays.
Single-crystal Heterostructured PbTiO3/CdS Nanorods with Enhanced Visible-Light-driven Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Single-crystal heterostructured PbTiO3/CdS nanorods were fabricated by a hydrothermal process. In the composites, well-crystalline CdS nanoparticles grew on the surfaces of tetragonal perovskite PbTiO3 nanorods and formed sharp PbTiO3/CdS interfaces. It was revealed that the as-synthesized heterostructured PbTiO3/CdS nanorods exhibited higher photocatalytic performance in the degradation of MB under visible light irradiation than pristine PbTiO3 nanorods and CdS nanoparticles. The enhanced performance is associated with a suitable band alignment and the promoted separation of photogenerated carriers by forming sharp interfaces between PbTiO3 and CdS in the heterostructure. Our results suggest that the heterostructured PbTiO3/CdS nanorods may be promising for highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts.

Abstract:We prepared nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) and N co-modified TiO2 (nZVI/N–TiO2) nanotube arrays as an enhanced visible-light photocatalyst. The TiO2 nanotube arrays were synthesized by electrochemical anodization of Ti foil in a two-electrode system. Amorphous TiO2 nanotube arrays were immersed in ammonia and then annealed to produce crystalline N-doped TiO2 (N–TiO2) nanotube arrays. nZVI spheres were directly deposited on the N–TiO2 nanotube arrays by borohydride reduction. The photocatalysts were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The environmental applicability and photocatalytic activity of the proposed nZVI/N–TiO2 nanotube arrays were tested by phenol degradation in an aqueous system under UV and visible light irradiation. The phenol degradation rate constants of each sample under visible light irradiation were in the following order: nZVI/N–TiO2 (kobs=0.006min−1)>N–TiO2 (kobs=0.002min−1) ⪢ nZVI/TiO2 (kobs=0.0003min−1)>TiO2 (kobs=0.0001min−1). This result can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the N–TiO2 nanotubes with lower energy band gap and the electron transfer from the conduction band (CB) of N–TiO2 to nZVI spheres highly-dispersed on the N–TiO2 for enhanced separation of photogenerated electrons and holes.
Enhanced Visible Light Photoelectrochemical Performances with Nitrogen Doped TiO_2 Nanowire Arrays

Abstract:Self-organized anodic anatase TiO2nanowire arrays doped with nitrogen have been successfully fabri-cated and their photoelectrochemical(PEC) properties have been characterized and found to be substantially im-proved compared to undoped nanowires or commercial P25 nanoparticles.Photocurrent measured with monochro-matic incident light showed that the incident photon-to-current efficiency(IPCE,%) values of nanowire arrayelectrodes with or without N-doping were obviously higher than that of commercial P25 nanoparticle electrodes,and nitrogen-doped TiO2nanowire arrays(NTNA) had noticeable absorption in the visible region.The NTNAelectrodes showed the highest photocurrent density and power conversion efficiency under 100 mW/cm2visiblelight illumination.A maximumolphotoconversion efficiency of 0.52% was achieved for the NTNA sample at anapplied potential of 0.09 V versus Ag/AgCl(saturated KCl) electrode under visible illumination,much higherthan that of the undoped nanowire and commercial P25 nanoparticle electrodes.These results demonstrate thatNTNA thin films are promising for enhancing the photoresponse and effectively improving PEC performances ofnanostructured TiO2in the visible region for different applications including solar hydrogen generation.
Enhancement of Visible-Light-Induced Photocurrent and Photocatalytic Activity of V and N Codoped TiO2 Nanotube Array Films

Abstract:Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) codoped with V and N were synthesized by electrochemical anodization in association with hydrothermal treatment. The samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocurrent and photocatalytic activity of codoped TiO2 nanotube arrays were investigated under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the production of hydroxyl radicals on the surface of visible light-irradiated samples is detected by a photoluminescence technique using terephthalic acid (TA) as a probe molecule. It was found that the V+N co-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays showed remarkably enhanced photocurrent and photocatalytic activity than undoped sample due to the V and N codoping.

Abstract:N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays were prepared by electrochemical anodization in glycerol electrolyte, followed by electrochemical deposition in NH4Cl solution. An orthogonal experiment was used to optimize the doping conditions. Electrolyte concentration, reaction voltage, and reaction time were the main factors to influence the N-doping effect which was the determinant of the visible range photoresponse. The optimal N-doping conditions were determined as follows: reaction voltage is 3 V, reaction time is 2 h, and electrolyte concentration is 0.5 M. The maximal photocurrent enhanced ratio was 30% under white-light irradiation. About 58% improvement of photocatalytic efficiency was achieved in the Rhodamine B degradation experiment by N doping. The kinetic constant of the N-doped TNT arrays sample was almost twice higher than that of the undoped sample. Further analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy supported that electrochemical deposition is a simple and efficient method for N doping into TiO2nanotube arrays.

Abstract:The integration of non-metallic doping and carbon coating for TiO2-based photoelectrocatalysts can be recognized as a promising strategy to enhance their hydrogen production performance. To this end, this study explored the carbon coating engineering to induce stable multi-element doping with an aim to develop high-performance TiO2 nanotube array-based photoelectrocatalysts. The resulting structures consisted of carbon-nitrogen-sulfur-tri-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays with a nitrogen-sulfur-codoped carbon coating (CNS-TNTA/NSC). The fabrication process involved a one-step, low-cost strategy of the carbon-coated tridoped reaction confined in vacuum space, utilizing polymer thiourea sealed in a controlled environment. Compared the photocurrent density of CNS-TNTA/NSC with pristine TNTA, the photocurrent enhancement of approximately 18.3-fold under simulated sunlight and a remarkable increase of 32.8-fold under simulated visible light conditions. The enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light was ascribed to two factors: First, C, N, and S tri-doping and Ti3+ created a diverse array of impurity energy levels within the band gap, which synergistically narrowed the band gap and further enhanced response to the visible light range. Second, the presence of a carbon coating shell doped with N and S can greatly promote electron transfer and efficient electron-hole pair separation. This study could provide significant insights concerning the design of sophisticated photoanodes.

Abstract:Octahedral-Cu2O-particle-loaded TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays were prepared by anode oxidation and subsequent cathodic deposition, and used as photocatalyst to degrade Acid Orange II under the irradiation of visible light. The results demonstrate that the photocatalytic activity of the TNT was significantly enhanced by the incorporation of octahedral Cu2O. Furthermore, exposure of a large area of {111} facets of octahedral Cu2O into TNT arrays augments the adsorption property and photocatalytic activity of TNT. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc.
