Abstract:<p>The sensory nervous system (SNS) builds up the association between external stimuli and the response of organisms. In this system, habituation is a fundamental characteristic that filters out irrelevantly repetitive information and makes the SNS adapt to the external environment. To emulate this critical process in electronic devices, a Li<i>x</i>SiO<i>y</i>‐based memristor (TiN/Li<i>x</i>SiO<i>y</i>/Pt) is developed where the temporal response under repetitive stimulation is similar to that of habituation. By connecting this synaptic device to a leaky integrate‐and‐fire neuron based on a Ag/SiO2:Ag/Au memristor, a fully memristive SNS with habituation is experimentally demonstrated. Finally, a habituation spiking neural network based on the SNS is built and its application in obstacle avoidance for robot navigation is successfully presented. The results provide that a direct emulation of the biologically inspired learning process by memristors could be a sound choice for neuromorphic hardware implementation.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main objective of this paper is to develop an artificial sensory nervous system (SNS) based on memristors, capable of simulating the habituation process found in biological organisms. Specifically, the research team designed a memristor device based on lithium silicate (Li_xSiO_y) and used it as an artificial synapse to achieve habituation responses to repeated stimuli. The key issues this paper attempts to address are as follows: 1. **Imitating the sensory nervous system of biological organisms**: The paper aims to simulate the functions of the sensory nervous system in biological organisms through electronic devices, particularly the critical characteristic of habituation, which is the reduced response to repeated stimuli. 2. **Reducing circuit complexity**: Existing complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuits can simulate the functions of synapses and neurons but lack intrinsic similarity to biological prototypes, resulting in complex and inefficient circuits. Therefore, researchers seek to use emerging devices (such as memristors) to simplify circuit structures. 3. **Achieving habituation functionality**: The artificial sensory nervous system proposed in the paper can achieve habituation functionality, which is fundamental for organisms to adapt to their environment and filter out irrelevant repetitive information. This system consists of memristor-based synapses and silver-based Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) neurons. 4. **Application demonstration**: Finally, the research also constructed a habituation-based spiking neural network (HSNN) and demonstrated its application in a robot navigation obstacle avoidance task, proving that incorporating habituation into the artificial sensory nervous system can significantly enhance the robot's performance. In summary, the core contribution of this paper lies in proposing a new memristor-based artificial sensory nervous system architecture that not only simulates the habituation characteristics of the sensory nervous system in biological organisms but also validates its effectiveness in practical applications such as robot navigation.
