Abstract:In combination with methyllithium, ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide (L-LA) and copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-LA were investigated in the presence or absence of benzyl alcohol by using an air-stable zinc complex bearing (benzimidazolyl) pyridine alcohol ligand. Similar to the polymerization of epsilon-CL, the monomers were completely converted to polymers in short time in all the cases and high catalytic activities were achieved in the ROP of L-LA. The structural analysis of polymers indicated that in the absence of benzyl alcohol, the polymers obtained were mainly cyclic PLA with relatively broad molecular weight distribution, whereas linear PLA with lower molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution predominated in the presence of benzyl alcohol. On the basis of ROP of epsilon-CL and L-LA, the ring-opening copolymerization of epsilon-CL and L-LA was studied with the different CL/LA feeding ratios. A series of linear and cyclic block copolymers with different CL/LA molar ratios was synthesized by the sequential feeding strategy according to the presence or absence of benzyl alcohol in the reaction system. The structure and thermal properties of homopolymers and copolymers were characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, GPC, DSC and TGA analysis.

Abstract:Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, aliphatic polyesters are widely used in the biomedical, packaging and agricultural fields, which are usually accessed by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and the catalysts particularly play an important role. Herein a series of quinolinyl-urea catalysts have been synthesized via the reaction between isocyanate and aminoquinoline with an amino group at different substitution positions and characterized. In combination with 7-methyl-1, 5, 7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-ene (MTBD) as a cocatalyst and benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as an initiator, 1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(quinolin-3-yl)urea (3-QU) was observed to be most active for the ROP of δ-valerolactone (δ-VL). The polymerization conditions were optimized by varying the type of organic base, catalyst concentration and reaction temperature. By changing the ratio of [M]0/[I], linear polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared. The kinetic and chain extension experiments were carried out to prove the “living”/controllable feature. And the NMR experiments were used to support the proposal of possible mechanism.

Abstract:The ring-opening copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone and delta-valerolactone was carried out under solvent-free conditions with a pyridyl-urea (6C-PU)/7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene catalytic system by premixing two monomers, yielding gradient copolyesters with cyclic and linear structures in the absence or presence of an initiator, respectively. The random and block copolyesters of these two monomers were also prepared for comparison. The results of H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra determined the linear and cyclic structure of copolymers. The kinetic experiment was used to determine the consuming rates of two monomers during the polymerization. The topologies and thermal properties of all the copolymers were characterized and compared by NMR and DSC.

Abstract:(Thio)urea/base systems have been widely used in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones based on their superior performance in activity and selectivity. Herein, a pyridyl-urea (6C-PU)/7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene catalytic system is used to prepare the polyesters with cyclic topology via the ROP of lactones in the absence of initiator under solvent-free conditions. The catalytic system shows high activity in the ROP of delta-valerolactone (delta-VL) and cyclic polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained despite the existence of some linear products generated during the precipitation process. The structure of the resulting polymers is determined by proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and intrinsic viscosity studies. A possible mechanism is proposed on the basis of NMR analysis and characteristics of polymerization. Thermal and mechanical properties of cyclic PVLs are investigated through differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile test.

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of lactones has been proven as a powerful technique to generate polyesters with high levels of control over molar mass and polymer dispersity. However, the introduction of functional groups on the monomer ring structure can dramatically influence the ability of a monomer to undergo ROP. Therefore, understanding the structure-reactivity relationship of functional monomers is essential to gain access to materials with chemical functionality via direct polymerisation. Herein, we report how structural modifications of alkyl-substituted ε-caprolactones affected their reactivity towards the ring-opening of the functional monomer. We observed that the reactivity was strongly influenced by the substituent position, wherein the δ-substituted monomer exhibited the fastest polymerisation kinetics. In contrast, a substituent placement in the ε-position significantly reduced polymerisation time compared to other subsituent positions. Moreover, the thermal properties of the resultant functional ε-polycaprolactones were investigated and showed no significant change in the thermal transitions. This demonstrates that functional caprolactone monomers with sterically demanding functional groups can still undergo direct ring-opening polymerisation and that careful positioning of these functional groups allows to control the rate of polymerisation, a crucial parameter to be considered before for the design of new prospective functional monomers and their industrial applications.

Abstract:The kinetics of enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (eROP) of ε-caprolactone in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was investigated using a new, high-pressure sampling autoclave. The polymerization was performed using Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) as catalyst and was found to be approximately first order with respect to monomer up to 80% conversion. For the first time we have been able to present kinetic results on the eROP of caprolactone in scCO2. These results show that high molecular weight polymer could be obtained (up to 50 kDa) with polydispersities in the range of 2. The relatively poor molecular weight control was attributed to the large degree of enzyme-catalyzed transesterification that forms both cyclic species (intramolecular transesterification) and linear polymer (intermolecular transesterification). This effect has also been observed for eROP of ε-caprolactone in conventional solvents. The formation of cyclic oligomers of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated as a function of conversion, and comparisons were made to similar studies undertaken in conventional solvents.

Abstract:We report the simultaneous dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of a secondary alcohol in combination with lipase-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL). (R,S)-1-Phenylethanol (PhE) was used as a model secondary alcohol and incorporated into poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) under DKR conditions. A total of 75% of the PhE was incorporated as (R)-PhE-PCL with over 99% enantio excess (ee) in 23 h. This methodology could provide a simple one-step approach to prepare enantiopure sustained release polymeric formulations of chiral species such as drugs or drug precursors bearing a secondary hydroxyl group.

Abstract:Coordination-insertion ring-opening polymerization(ROP)of cyclic esters is an industrial way to synthesize polyesters,which are widely applied in biomedical and environment-benign fields.However,the rate-determining transition state(TS)identified by the conventional reaction pathways(pathway A and pathway B)presented in the literature did not well describe the structure-reactivity relationship.The misidentification of the rate-determining TS might arise from the less ergodicity in the search of reaction pathways.Herein,we suggested a stride strategy based on the insight that even a partial double bond is rotatable at the catalysis temperature.As a result,we revealed a new reaction pathway,pathway C with a torsion transition state TSC2,by density functional theory(DFT).We also carried out kinetic experiments of ROP of D-lactide(D-LA),L-lactide(L-LA),ε-caprolactone(CL),and δ-valerolactone(VL),using poly(ethylene glycol)as the initiator and stannous octoate as the catalyst.The excellent linearity between the calculated free energy barriers and logarithms of the experimental kinetic constants of the two kinds of lactide and lactone monomers,was established,validating the quasi-ergodic search of reaction pathways and the scaling predicted by transition state theory.The linearity was highly predictive for the other lactide and lactone monomers,demonstrated by glycolide(GA)and trimethylene urethane(TU).

Abstract:Polymerization of several lactones were carried out by employing Pseudomonas sp. lipase as the catalyst. The data indicate that water is consumed at the onset of polymerization and released in part during subsequent stages, leading us to propose a complex mechanism for the enzymatic polymerization of lactone. This mechanism involves both ring-opening and linear condensation polymerization. The former was dominant at the early stage while the latter was dominant in the later stage. In addition, the reaction media showed complex influences on enzymatic polymerization. Some organic solvents increased the degree of polymerization (DP) and decreased the molecular weight distribution. A strategy to increase the molecular weight of the polymer is introduced, which led to the synthesis of a polymer with a number-average molecular weight (M-n) of 14,500 -the highest M-n of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) prepared by enzyme-catalyzed polymerization thus far-and molecular weight distribution of 1.23. The differences in basicities of a monomer and a polymer in various systems have been taken into account. The kinetic data on ε-caprolactone polymerization obtained have been discussed on the basis of the mechanism including the following reactions: 1) chain propagation; 2) reversible combination of the active centers by the carbonyl group of the monomer; and 3) reversible combination of the active centers by the carbonyl group of the polymer.

Abstract:Enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (eROP) of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) were integrated into a one-step chemoenzymatic route to yield poly(epsilon-CL-block-MMA) (PCL-b-PMMA) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The interaction between eROP and ATRP during the copolymerization was studied: Cu(I) Br/bpy as ATRP catalyst was compatible with eROP, while Ni(PPh)(3)Br-2 inhibited enzyme activity; under the reaction conditions, both epsilon-CL and PCL improved the solubility of poly(MMA) (PMMA) in the reaction system, and thus the ATRP proceeded successfully. The propagation of PMMA block exhibited living kinetics during the copolymerization, ensuring the molecular weight was well controlled. PCL-b-PMMA copolymers with varying molecular weight were synthesized with good control of the composition of the block copolymer. The one-step chemoenzymatic polymerization provides a very simple and versatile route for the synthesis of block copolymers.

Abstract:Copolymers of ɛ-caprolactone and l-lactide with different molar ratios were prepared via sequential ring opening polymerization (ROP) of both monomers. The resulting PCL–PLLA–PCL triblock copolymers were characterized by using NMR, SEC, DSC and XRD. One melting peak corresponding to the PCL block was detected, but the presence of PLLA decreased the crystallinity of PCL. Enzyme-catalyzed biodegradation of solution cast films was investigated at 37°C in the presence of Pseudomonas lipase. It was observed that the PLLA component retarded the degradation of the block copolymer as compared to the PCL homopolymer. Therefore, the enzymatic degradation rate can be adjusted by varying the composition of the copolymers. 1H NMR and SEC data showed no significant chemical composition or molecular weight changes during degradation, indicating that the degradation proceeded according to a surface erosion mechanism. ESEM confirmed surface erosion with appearance of a rugged morphology.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLAs) and polycaprolactones (PCLs) are emerging to be polyesters of choice because they are biodegradable and biocompatible. The industrial viable method currently used for their production is catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of their respective cyclic ester monomers. The catalyst is at the core of ROP chemical transformation and as such research is dedicated towards the innovation of more efficient and selective catalysts. Catalyst structural features greatly influence catalyst performance in ROP, and this review discusses the effects of ligand and catalyst structure and system dynamics, on catalytic activity and polymer properties. The effects of associated catalyst components such as initiating groups, ligand chirality, and stereochemical in relation to catalyst activity and polymer properties were also reviewed. The effects of metal nuclearity and catalyst flexibility on catalytic activity were also reviewed. The effect of solvent and temperature was briefly considered.

Abstract:A series of zinc complexes coordinated with benzotriazo-based imino-phenoxy ligands (Zn-II(BTPIP)) has been developed for the mediation of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of e-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-lactide (L-LA). In the presence of Zn-II(BTPIP), the polymerization generated the PCL with the molecular weights in the range of 9600-17700 g mol-1 and narrow dispersity (D) around 1.08 to 1.33 as well as the PLA showing a molecular weight as 12300-14400 g mol(-1) with narrow molecular weight distribution (D < 1.11). Furthermore, the living characters of the linearly increased molecular weight with monomer conversion and the synthesis of the tri-block copolymer of PEG-b-PCL-b-PLA were achieved. The substituent effect of Zn-II(BTPIP) in the ROPs of e-CL and L-LA was rationalized by the DFT calculations based on the coordination-insertion mechanism.

Abstract:Schematic representation of mathematical modelling and optimization. Polylactide, a biodegradable polymer, has garnered significant attention due to its environmental sustainability and application versatility. The present study introduces a comprehensive mathematical model for the sustainable production of branched polylactide through ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L‐lactide with 5HDON (5‐hydroxymethyl‐1,4‐dioxane‐2‐on), using Sn(Oct)2. The model incorporates a derived reaction mechanism, mass and population balance equations, and the method of moments to predict average molecular properties. Kinetic parameters are estimated through optimization techniques such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), simulated annealing (SA), and genetic algorithm (GA). The model effectively predicts the behaviour of different lactide/5HDON ratios (PLLH80, PLLH94, PLLH97, and PLLH99), revealing a positive correlation between monomer concentration and average molecular weight and an inverse correlation with degree of branching. Notably, PLLH80 exhibits superior branching compared to PLLH99, demonstrating the potential for tailoring polymer properties via controlled lactide/5HDON ratios. Moreover, this work offers a robust tool for optimizing copolymer synthesis for diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:Transesterification remains an essential cause of the difficulties to carry out living ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone initiated by rare earth tris(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate)s. This paper investigates chain transfer reaction which significantly decreases molecular weights and broadens the distributions (M-w/M-n) of the polymers. The intra- and inter-molecular transesterification reactions are demonstrated as well. A Monte Carlo program simulates the chain transfer kinetics and quantitatively reproduces the increase in the cyclic molecule number, the decrease in molecule weights and the broadening of M-w/M-n. A ring-chain equilibrium is reached when the number of cyclic molecules keeps constant after enough reaction time.

Abstract:Poly(L-lactide)/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock, triblock and four-armed copolymers with the same monomer feed ratio (50/50) were synthesised by two step ring opening polymerisation Of Successively added epsilon-caprolactone and L-lactide, using isopropanol, ethylene glycol, or pentaerythritol as initiator and zinc lactate as co-initiator. The resulting copolymers were characterised by (1)H NMR, DSC, SEC, and FT-IR, which confirmed the blocky characteristic of the copolymers. Solution cast films were allowed to degrade at 37 degrees C in the presence of proteinase K, and the degradation was monitored by gravimetry, DSC, SEC, (1)H NMR and ESEM. The effects of chain structure, block length and crystallinity on the degradation are discussed. The four-armed block copolymer degrades the most rapidly, while the diblock copolymer exhibited the slowest degradation rate. The difference was related to the crystallinity depending on both the molecular structure and block length.
