Abstract:Research of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in three kinds of binary solvent systems (CCl4/C6H14, CHCl3/C6H14 and C2H5OH/C6H14) on the infrared (IR) spectra was reported. Two types of carbonyl stretching vibration bands for MMA in CHCl3/C6H14 or C2H5OH/C6H14 mixtures were found with the changing of the mole fraction of CHCl3 (XCHCl3) or C2H5OH (XC2H5OH). The carbonyl stretching vibration bands at lower frequencies in the above two mixtures were attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonding between MMA and CHCl3 or C2H5OH. While in CCl4/C6H14 mixtures there was only one type of carbonyl stretching vibration band of MMA. Good linear correlations between the frequencies of CO or CC stretching vibration band of MMA and XCCl4, XCHCl3 or XC2H5OH were found, respectively. The solute–solvent interactions in the three different binary solvent systems were discussed in detail.

Abstract:FT-IR spectra of benzaldehyde in 11 different organic solvents were recorded and analyzed. The density functional theory (DFT) B3LYP/6-31G* method was chosen to calculate the infrared spectrum of benzaldehyde in gaseous state. The electrostatic effects of different solvents in benzaldehyde solutions were calculated using DFT with the self-consistent isodensity polarizable continuum model (SCI-PCM). Two remarkable carbonyl (C=O) peaks of benzaldehyde were observed by FT-IR in alcohol solvents, which were caused by different hydrogen bond species and explained by ab initio calculation. The results showed that the combination of SCI-PCM model and ab initio calculation could give excellent agreements with FT-IR spectra of title compound in solutions.
Infrared study of 6-methylcoumarin in binary solvent mixtures.

Abstract:The infrared absorption spectra of the carbonyl stretching vibrations of 6-methylcoumarin (6MC) have been investigated in CCl4/ROH mixtures (CCl4/C2H5OH, CCl4/n-C3H7OH, CCl4/i-C3H7OH, and CCl4/t-C5H11OH). Two types of carbonyl stretching vibration bands for 6MC are found with the change of the mole fraction of the aprotic solvent CCl4(XCCl4) in binary solvent mixtures. The dependencies of the frequencies of carbonyl stretching vibrations υ(CO) on XCCl4 allow a distinction and assignment of all species resulting from the solvent–solute interactions. Linear correlations between the υ(CO) of each species and XCCl4 are found. The influence on the transformation of some species caused by the self-associated alcohols is discussed.

Abstract:The infrared vibration frequencies of vinyl acetate (VAc) in 18 different solvents were theoretically computed at Density Function Theory (DFT) B3LYP/6-311G* level based on Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) and experimentally recorded by FT-IR spectroscopy. The solvent-induced long-range bulk electrostatic solvation free energies of VAc (Delta G(elec)) were calculated by the SMD model. The C=O stretching vibration frequencies of VAc were utilized as a measure of the chemical reactivities of the C=C group in VAc. The calculated and experimental C=O stretching vibration frequencies of VAc (V-cal(C=O) v(exp)(C=O)) and were correlated with empirical solvent parameters including the KBM equation, the Swain equation and the linear solvation energy relationships (LSER). Through ab initio calculation, assignments of the two C=O absorption bands of VAc in alcohol solvents were achieved. The PCM, SMD and ab initio calculation offered supporting evidence to explain the FT-IR experimental observations from differing aspects. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Water Dimer in CCl 4 Investigated by In-situ Infrared Spectroscopy and Computational Analysis

Abstract:The low solubility of solute molecules in a nonpolar solvent and the weak interactions between solute and solvent molecules can be utilized to study isolated solute molecules. The in-situ inclusion process of H 2 O and D 2 O in CCl 4 was observed by infrared absorption spectroscopy. These in-situ spectra showed deviations from the monomer spectrum over time attributed to the formation of water dimers. The water dimer spectrum was extracted by subtraction between the time-series spectra. DFT calculations allowed the assignment of the four vibrational modes in the dimer spectrum. The most notable changes from the monomer to the dimer spectra were in the donor molecule, which showed a peak redshift and a large increase in the absorption strengths, especially for the donor OH (OD) bond which participates in the hydrogen bonding to the acceptor water molecule. Using free energy calculations, the equilibrium constants of H 2 O and D 2 O dimers dissolved in CCl 4 were determined to be 0.013 and 0.015, respectively, and the concentrations were determined to be ~1 μ M. The intensity ratio between the v3 mode of the water monomer and the vBD mode of the dimer calculated through DFT was found to be in close agreement with the ratios from the monomer and dimer spectra. In contrast, when the solvent was chloroform, the increase of the vBD mode of the dimer from the experiment did not agree with that from the calculations, indicating that the specific interaction of the water molecules with chloroform should be considered.

Abstract:From recent studies on the structure of aqueous alkali and alkaline chloride solutions, it can be deduced that the effects of monovalent and divalent cations are small, and water–chloride interactions are primarily responsible for the solutions. Therefore, Cl− molarity can be treated as an important parameter in describing these systems. In this work, the NaCl–H2O, KCl–H2O, CaCl2–H2O, MgCl2–H2O and NaCl–KCl–CaCl2–H2O systems are synthesized, and their Raman spectra are recorded. From the Raman OH stretching bands of the solutions, the isosbestic points can be discriminated. This means that there exists the equilibrium between various structural species, the Raman OH vibration can be applied to study the salinity of these solutions. In this study, the Raman OH vibration is fitted with two Gaussian sub-bands, the equilibrium constant can be determined, then the calibration equation of Cl− concentration (molarity scale) can be determined. After the effects of the birefringence of the host mineral on the Raman OH stretching bands are discussed, the method is applied to measure the salinity of natural fluid inclusions.
The microscopic structure of 1-Methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EOMIMTFSI) during dilution with polar solvents

Abstract:Ether-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted increasing attention in the fields of electrochemistry and energy; however, few fundamental studies of the microscopic properties of ether-functionalized ILs have been reported. In this work, the hydrogen bonding interactions between the ether-functionalized IL 1-methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EOMIMTFSI) and co-solvents, chloroform (CHCl3), acetonitrile (CH3CN) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), were investigated at the whole concentration range by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), excess infrared spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. The following conclusions were made: (1) during dilution with co-solvents, the hydrogen bonding interactions in the three systems were strengthened, and the strength of the hydrogen bonds decreased in the following order: EOMIMTFSI−DMSO > EOMIMTFSI−CHCl3 > EOMIMTFSI−CH3CN. (2) DMSO could disrupt the hydrogen bonding interactions between the cations and anions in EOMIMTFSI, and [EOMIM]+−DMSO complexes were observed in the excess infrared spectrums. CHCl3 and CH3CN were unable to disrupt the electrostatic interactions, and only ion cluster–co-solvent and ion pair–co-solvent complexes were observed. (3) The main interaction sites were different in the studied systems. In the systems of EOMIMTFSI−CHCl3 and EOMIMTFSI−DMSO, the main interaction sites between the co-solvent and cations were C2−H, whereas in the EOMIMTFSI−CH3CN system, the corresponding interaction site was C5−H.

Identification of Transient Radical Anions (LiClO4)n(-) (N= 1- 3) in THF Solutions, Experimental and Theoretical Investigation on Electron Localization in Oligomers.

Abstract:Picosecond pulse radiolysis measurements of tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions containing LiClO4 over a wide range of concentration are performed to investigate the formation of transient species. The Cl-35 NMR measurements of these solutions prior to irradiation show that the salt is in the form of (LiClO4)(n) oligomers. Kinetics and transient absorption spectra of intermediates in each solution are obtained on the time scale from 10 to 3800 ps. A global spectro-kinetic matrix of the data is analyzed by the multicurve resolution alternated least-squares (MCR-ALS) method. It shows the presence of 3 transient species induced by electron pulse, in addition to the solvated electron. A hybrid Monte Carlo/DFT molecular simulation method is elaborated, using the MPW1K functional for the configuration sampling and B3LYP for the spectra calculations. The maximum of the absorption band of the monomer (LiClO4)(-), dimer (LiClO4)(2)(-), trimer (LiClO4)(3)(-), and tetramer (LiClO4)(4)(-) anions are deduced from the simulations. They enable one to label the MCR-ALS spectra (differences are below 0.1 eV) and to interpret the kinetic data. The simulations show also that Li-1 ion catalyzes the reduction of perchlorate by excess electrons. Only the dimer anion, due to its unique structure with a stable Li-2(+) core and two nonbridging perchlorates, presents higher stability toward ClO4- reduction into ClO3-. It corresponds to the long-lived species observed in the experiments.

Abstract:Hydration of ions is a topic of broad relevance in chemistry and biology. Liquid-state terahertz spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be able to detect even small solute-induced changes in the hydrogen bond network dynamics at the solute-water interface. Here, we apply ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to study the solvation of Na(+) and Cl(-) in bulk water in the context of their far-infrared responses. Spatial decomposition schemes for infrared spectra down to the THz regime reveal the importance of both dipolar couplings and correlations in particle motion in these aqueous solutions. The explicit representation of the electronic structure properly captures the solute-solvent polarization effects that are crucial for the interpretation of recent experimental data. This demonstrates that theoretical spectroscopy significantly complements experimental measurements and provides most detailed insights by selectively monitoring the spectral activity due to distinct hydration spheres.
Raman and Infrared-Spectra, Conformational Stability, Vibrational Assignment, Barriers to Internal-Rotation and Ab-Initio Calculations of But-2-Enoyl Chloride

Abstract:The Raman (3500-1 0 cm-1) and infrared (3200-50 cm-1) spectra were recorded for the fluid and solid phases of but-2-enoyl chloride (crotonyl chloride), trans-CH3CH-CHCClO, where the methyl group is trans to the CClO group, and a complete vibrational assignment is proposed. These data were interpreted on the basis that the s-trans (anti) form (two double bonds oriented trans to one another) is the most stable form in the fluid phases and the only conformer remaining in the solid state. The asymmetric torsional fundamental of the more stable s-trans and the higher energy s-cis (syn) form were observed at 97.5 and 86.9 cm-1, respectively. From these data the asymmetric potential function governing the internal rotation about the C-C bond was determined. The potential coefficients are V1 = - 111 +/- 2, V2 = 1860 +/- 48, V3 = 6 +/- 2, V4 = - 43 +/- 24 and V6 = - 22 +/- 6. The s-trans to s-cis and s-cis to s-trans barriers were determined to be 1890 and 1785 cm-1, respectively, with an enthalpy difference between the conformers of 105 +/- 52 cm - 1 1300 +/- 149 cal mol-1 (1 cal = 4.184 J) 1. Similarly, the barrier governing internal rotation of the CH3 group for the s-trans conformer was also determined to be 912 +/- 30 (2.61 +/- 0.09 kcal mol-1) from the torsional fundamental observed in the far-infrared spectrum of the gas. All these data were compared with the corresponding quantities obtained from ab initio Hartree-Fock gradient calculations employing the RHF/3-21G*, RHF/6-31G* and/or MP2/6-31G* basis sets. These results were compared with the corresponding quantities for some similar molecules.

Abstract:A study of the weak interactions of acetonitrile-water-sodium perchlorate mixtures has been performed using attenuated total reflection two-dimensional FTIR spectroscopy (ATR-2D-FTIR). The results indicate that CH3 and OH in the mixtures have some weak interactions with each other. The inorganic salts, sodium perchlorate, disbond hydrogen-bonded structure of water. Some interactions have been found between ions of sodium perchlorate and water molecules. Cations of Na+ are combined with hydrogen-bonded water. Inorganic salts play an important role in changing the microstructure of the mixtures.

Abstract:Raman spectra of acetonitrile (CH3CN)–sodium perchlorate (NaClO4) mixture solutions at different concentrations and temperatures have been studied. It was suggested that the shifts and intensities of Raman modes of CH3CN varied significantly due a novel Fermi resonance (FR) was formed between the ν 2′ and (ν 3 + ν 4)′ bands of CH3CN-Na+ complex. The phase transition underwent from the liquid to solid phase β at 223 K, and from β to α at 213 K, which were induced by the strong cationic-molecule interaction. In addition, the impact of Na+ on FR was discussed by the FR parameters at different concentrations and temperatures.

Infrared and polarized Raman spectra of (CH3)2NH2Al(SO4)2 x 6H2O

Abstract:FTIR and single crystal Raman spectra of (CH3)2NH2Al(SO4)2 x 6H2O have been recorded at 300 and 90 K and analysed. The shifting of nu1 mode to higher wavenumber and its appearance in Bg species contributing to the alpha(xz) and alpha(yz) polarizability tensor components indicate the distortion of SO4 tetrahedra. The presence of nu1 and nu2 modes in the IR spectrum and the lifting of degeneracies of nu2, nu3, and nu4 modes are attributed to the lowering of the symmetry of the SO4(2-) ion. Coincidence of the IR and Raman bands for different modes suggest that DMA+ ion is orientationally disordered. One of the H atoms of the NH2 group of the DMA+ ion forms moderate hydrogen bonds with the SO4(2-) anion. Al(H2O)6(3+) ion is also distorted in the crystal. The shifting of the stretching modes to lower wavenumbers and the bending mode to higher wavenumber suggest that H2O molecules form strong hydrogen bonds with SO4(2-) anion. The intensity enhancement and the narrowing of nu1SO4, deltaC2N and Al(H2O)6(3+) modes at 90 K confirm the settling down of the protons in the hydrogen bonds formed with H2O molecules and NH2 groups. This may be one of the reasons for the phase transition observed in the crystal.
Reorientational Relaxation of Water Molecules in LiCl Solution Studied by Depolarised Rayleigh Scattering

Abstract:Brillouin scattering and depolarised Rayleigh scattering have been used to study the reorientational motion of the water molecules in the LiCl primary hydration shell. The relaxation time is found to be dependent on the LiCl concentration, varying from 0.7*10-11 s at 9 mol.% to 1.8*10-11 s at 36 mol.%. The relaxation times at 26 mol.% and 36 mol.% follow a simple Arrhenius relation with activation energies of 5.5 kcal mol-1 and 6.3 kcal mol-1 respectively. The results are consistent with NMR studies, but not with dielectric measurements. Both the measured refractive index and the scattering intensity indicate that the electronic polarisability of the hydration shell also is dependent on ion concentration. The concentration dependence of the adiabatic compressibility indicates a possible structural transition at about 20 mol.%.

Abstract:Accurate spectroscopic parameters of isopropyl alcohol, a volatile organic compound present on Earth and in extraterrestrial atmospheres, are provided. The work pursues the study of the far-infrared region, describing the distribution of the low-lying vibrational energy levels that can be populated at very low temperatures, having effects on the detectability and identification. The potential energy surface shows 27 almost equivalent minima producing 27 subcomponents of the levels due to tunneling effects. Computations have been performed using highly correlated ab initio calculations, accurate enough to distinguish between the rotational parameters of the two quasi-identical conformers gauche and trans. A variational procedure in three dimensions depending on three interacting internal rotations, the internal rotation of the two methyl groups and the internal rotation of the hydroxyl group, is employed to compute the energies. The 27 subcomponents of the ground vibrational state can be grouped into three series of nine energy levels located around 0.000, 1.693, and 81.927 cm −1 whose energy difference is due to the OH torsion effect. The nine subcomponents integrated in each series derive from the torsion of the two methyl groups. The computations reproduce accurately the available experimental data. New predicted properties can help the spectroscopic analysis of the rotational-vibrational spectra in the gas phase and further detections of vibrationally excited isopropyl alcohol.

Abstract:Ultrafast intramolecular proton transfers of 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone (alizarin-h2) and its deuterated product (alizarin-d2) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) have been investigated by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The population dynamics in the solute vibrational mode of νC=O and the coherent oscillations observed in all of the skeletal vibrational modes νC=O and νC=C clearly showed the ultrafast excited-state intramolecular proton transfer dynamics of 110 and 170 fs for alizarin-h2 and alizarin-d2, respectively. Interestingly, we have observed that the solvent vibrational modes νS=O and νCSC may also represent ultrafast structural dynamics at the frequencies for its "free" or "aggregated" species. From the kinetic analysis of the νS=O and νCSC modes of DMSO, the ultrafast changes in the solvation or intermolecular interactions between DMSO molecules initiated by the structural changes of solute molecules have been thoroughly investigated. We propose that the solvent vibrational modes νS=O and νCSC of DMSO can be used as a "sensor" for ultrafast chemical reactions accompanying the structural changes and subsequent solute-solvent interactions.
