Abstract:In this payer, the sulfur Is and oxygen Is near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of (SO + 2O)/Cu(100) are studied by the multiple-scattering cluster (MSC) method. The cause of the resonances in the NEXAFS spectra of (SO + 2O)/Cu(100) is revealed. The same adsorption structure as in a SEXAFS study is obtained. The analysis shows that the pi* orbital breaks into two levels which shift toward higher energy due to the interaction between SO and the substrate. The low unoccupied orbitals of (SO + 2O)/Cu(100) are examined by a discrete variational (DV)-X-alpha study, which demonstrates the molecular orbital properties of the resonances in NEXAFS spectra of the adsorption system and supports the results of MSC calculation.

Abstract:The structures, chemical bonding, and magnetic properties of MnGe(3)O^(-/0) and MnGe(4)O^(-/0) are investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The experimental vertical electron detachment energies of MnGe(3)O^(-) and MnGe(4)O^(-) are measured to be 2.06 ± 0.04 and 2.64 ± 0.04 eV, respectively. Abstract:We employ a pseudopotential density-functional theory and Langevin molecular dynamics annealing technique (PDFMD) to determine the ground state structures of sulfur cluster S_6,and apply a time-dependent density functional (TDDFT) theory to calculate optical absorption spectra. It is found that the ground state structure of sulfur cluster S_6 belongs to a chair-shaped D_ 3d symmetry structure. The calculated optical absorption spectra of two S_6 isomer exhibit a variety of features that can be used for comparison against future experimental investigations.

Abstract:The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of VGen–/0 (n = 3–12) clusters were investigated using anion photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. We found that the dominant geometries are exohedral for the VGen–/0 clusters with n ≤ 7. The VGe8–/0 clusters have half-encapsulated boat-shaped structures, and the opening of the boat-shaped structure is gradually covered by the additional Ge atoms to form Gen cage from n = 9–11. At n = 12, a D3d distorted hexagonal prism cage structure is formed. According to the natural population analysis, for both anionic and neutral VGen clusters of n = 8–12, there is electron transfer from the Gen framework to the V atom and the total magnetic moments decrease to the minima. The electron transfer pattern and the minimization of the magnetic moments for these clusters are related to their structural evolution.

Abstract:Hel photoelectron sportrum of B(OCH3)(3) is presented in this rumen The assignment of the spectrum has been also done by an analysis of the intensity of the spectrum bands and the optimized MNDO molecular orbital calculation on B(OCH3)(3) molecule. The split showing a 1.08eV of the bands at the lowest two ionization potentials (IPs) was assigned to the Jahn-Teller split or the doubly degenerate oxygen lone-pair orbitals, And the splits showing 0.42eV and 0.380eV on the above-mentioned bands were considered as the result of spin-orbital interaction Therefore the tins PES study provides an exceedingly experimental example to testify the Jahn-Teller effect and the spin-orbital interaction splitting.

Abstract:The tetraoxo pertechnetate anion (TcO4(-)) is of great interest for nuclear waste management and radiopharmceuticals. To elucidate its electronic structure and to compare with that of its lighter congener MnO4(-), the photoelectron and electronic absorption spectra of MnO4(-) and TcO4(-) are investigated with density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio wave function theory (WFT). The vertical electron detachment energies (VDEs) of MnO4(-) obtained with the CR-EOM-CCSD(T) method are in good agreement with the lowest two experimental VDEs; the differences are less than 0.1 eV, representing a significant improvement over the IP-EOM-CCSD(T) result in the literature. Combining our CCSD(T) and CR-EOM-CCSD(T) results, the first five VDEs of TcO4(-) are estimated between 5 and 10 eV with an estimated accuracy of about ±0.2 eV. The vertical excitation energies are determined by using TD-DFT, CR-EOM-CCSD(T), and RAS-PT2 methods. The excitation energies and the assignments of the spectra are analyzed and partly improved. They are compared with reported SAC-CI results and available experimental data. Both dynamic and nondynamic electron correlations are important in the ground and excited states of MnO4(-) and TcO4(-). Nondynamical correlations are particularly relevant in TcO4(-) for reliable prediction of excitation energies. In TcO4(-) one Rydberg state interlaces but does not mix with the valence excited states, and it disappears in the condensed phase.

Abstract:The growth pattern and electronic properties of TiGen- (n=7-12) clusters were investigated using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. For both anionic and neutral TiGen clusters, a half-encapsulated boat-shaped structure appears at n=8, and the boat-shaped structure is gradually covered by the additional Ge atoms to form Ge-n cage at n=9-11. TiGe12- cluster has a distorted hexagonal prism cage structure. Abstract:The electronic structure of the ultra-thin Mn overlayer on GaAs(100) was studied by spectra of electron photoemission with synchrotron radiation. It was found that the valence band spectra of the Mn overlayer at ��>2ML are quite different from that of bulk ��-Mn. The similarity between them starts to show up as ��>2ML. The results can be well explained by the exchange splitting between the spin up and spin down bands of the Mn3d electrons. It was concluded that the magnetic ordering is established in the ultra thin Mn overlayer on GaAs (100) at ��2ML.

Abstract:The geometrical and electronic properties of the anionic and neutral V2O6 clusters were studied with the spin unrestricted hybrid density functional B3LYP method. The calculated ground states of both clusters are different from the previous theoretical results. The ground state of V2O6- is found to be a doublet with C2v symmetry, while a doublet with D2h symmetry was previously obtained by Vyboishchikov and Sauer. For neutral V2O6, the ground state is an open-shell singlet with D2h symmetry whose energy is very close to that of the triplet state. In contrast, a closed-shell singlet with D2h symmetry was obtained by Vyboishchikov and Sauer, and Calatayud et al. found a triplet ground state with Cs symmetry. Moreover,the calculated adiabatic and vertical detachment energies of the anion cluster are in much better agreement with the experimental results of photoelectron spectroscopy than previous theoretical values.

Abstract:Geometric structures of MgnOn (n=2-8) clusters are optimized by using the generalized gradient approximation density functional theory. Energy, vibrational frequency and electronic properties have been calculated. The geometries of the global minima of MgnOn (n=2, 3) are ring-like. The three-dimensional structures of MgnOn (n ≥ 4) may be built from Mg2O2 and Mg3O3 rings. The stability of clusters gained from obtuse O-Mg-O angles and much charge transfer. The transferred charge increases between Mg and O atoms with cluster size increasing, showing a tendency towards bulk charges. Mg3O3 and Mg6O6 clusters are shown to be more stable than neighboring ones by the investigations on vertical ionization potential, electron affinities and the energy gaps between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals.

Abstract:Using photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in the gas phase, we investigated the electronic structure and chemical bonding of six anionic [(MoO)-O-V](3+) complexes, [MoOX4](-) (where X = Cl (1), SPh (2), and SPh-p-Cl (3)), [MoO(edt)(2)](-) (4), [MoO(bdt)(2)](-) (5), and [MOO(bdtCl(2))(2)](-) (6) (where edt = ethane- 1,2-dithiolate, bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate, and bdtCl(2) = 3,6-dichlorobenzene-1,2-dithiolate). The gas-phase PES data revealed a wealth of new electronic structure information about the [(MoO)-O-V](3+) complexes. The energy separations between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and HOMO-1 were observed to be dependent on the O-Mo-S-C(alpha) dihedral angles and ligand types, being relatively large for the monodentate ligands, 1.32 eV for Cl and 0.78 eV for SPh and SPhCl, compared to those of the bidentate dithiolate complexes, 0.47 eV for edt and 0.44 eV for bdt and bdtCl(2). The threshold PES feature in all six species is shown to have the same origin and is due to detaching the single unpaired electron in the HOMO, mainly of Mo 4d character. This result is consistent with previous theoretical calculations and is verified by comparison with the PES spectra of two d(0) complexes, [VO(bdt)(2)](-) and [VO(bdtCl(2))(2)](-). The observed PES features are interpreted on the basis of theoretical calculations and previous spectroscopic studies in the condensed phase.

Abstract:The structures and chemical bonding of Ge3C– and Ge3O– as well as their neutrals are explored with anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The vertical detachment energies of Ge3C– and Ge3O– are measured to be 1.51 ± 0.04 and 2.00 ± 0.04 eV, respectively. It is found that Ge3C–/0 have a C2v symmetric planar structure with the C atom interacting with three Ge atoms. Ge3O–/0 have the O atom interacting with two Ge atoms of the triangular Ge3 unit. Ge3O– has a Cs symmetric nonplanar structure, while Ge3O has a C2v symmetric planar structure. Theoretical results show that the multiconfigurational effects in Ge3C–/0 and Ge3O–/0 are insignificant. Chemical bonding analyses reveal that there exist the C–Ge3 π⊥ orbital interaction and two π aromatic Ge2C units in Ge3C. Abstract:The structural growth sequences and electronic properties of MnGen (n = 2–15) clusters have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). An extensive search of the lowest-energy structures was conducted by considering a number of structural isomers for each cluster size. In the ground-state structures of MnGen clusters, the equilibrium site of the Mn atom gradually moves from the convex, surface to interior sites as the Ge cluster size varies from 2 to 15. The threshold size for the formation of caged MnGen and the sealed Mn-encapsulated Gen structure is n = 9 and n = 10, respectively. Maximum peaks were observed for MnGen clusters at n = 3, 6, 10, 12 and 14 with the size dependent on the second-order energy difference, implying that these clusters are relatively more stable. The electronic structures and magnetic properties of MnGen in the ground-state structures are discussed. The doped Mn atom makes the HOMO–LUMO gap of the Gen clusters smaller, due to hybridization between the p states of the Ge atom and the d states of the Mn atom. Most of the Mn-doped Gen clusters carry a magnetic moment of about 1.0 μB, except that MnGe6 and MnGe11 have a magnetic moment of about 3.0 μB. Charge transfer between Mn and Ge was also observed.

Abstract:The electronic structure of Mn in (Zn, Mn)O with different Mn concentrations has been investigated using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES). The Mn L2,3 RXES spectra reveal different spectral features depending on the resonant excitation energies and Mn concentrations. The surface dd excitations at about −1.9 eV of energy loss are identified in the highest Mn-doped sample. The comparison of integral intensity ratio of Mn L2 to L3 emission lines for these samples suggests that ferromagnetic samples have a large amount of free charge carriers, which are under consideration for the origin of ferromagnetism, with respect to antiferromagnetic ones.

Abstract:We report a photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and theoretical study on a series of transition metal halide complexes: FeX4− and MX3− (M=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, X=Cl, Br). PES spectra were obtained at two photon energies (193 and 157 nm), revealing the complicated electronic structures of these metal complexes and their variation with the ligand-field geometry and metal center substitution. Density functional calculations were carried out to obtain information about the structures, energetics, and molecular orbitals of the metal complexes and used to interpret the PES spectra. For the tetrahedrally coordinated ferric complexes (FeX4−), the PES data directly confirm the “inverted level scheme” electronic structure, where the Fe 3d electrons lie below those of the ligands due to a strong spin-polarization of the Fe 3d levels. For the three-coordinate complexes (MX3−), the calculations also revealed strong spin polarizations, but the molecular orbital diagrams present a “mixed level scheme,” in which the ligand orbitals and the Fe 3d majority spin orbitals are spaced closely in the same energy regions. This “mixed level scheme” is due to the larger splitting of the 3d orbitals in the stronger D3h ligand field and the smaller spin polarizations of the divalent metal centers. The calculations show that the metal 3d orbitals are stabilized gradually relative to the ligand orbitals from Mn to Ni in the tri-halide complexes consistent with the PES spectral patterns.

Abstract:Studies using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and density functional theory (DFT) demonstrate that M4X6 (M=W, Mo and X=O, S) clusters show large gaps (about 2 eV) between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), indicative of their high stability and chemical inertness. In particular, W4O6 has a lower symmetry and a larger HOMO–LUMO gap than other hitherto discovered magic clusters. Although the similarity between the electronic structures of W4O6 and Mo4S6 may be regarded as an indication that both clusters have similar geometric structures, our detailed DFT-calculations reveal otherwise. This result implies that synergetic approach using theoretical and experimental methods are essential to shed light on cluster geometries.

Abstract:We here report a systematic theoretical study on geometries, electronic structures, and energetic stabilities of six hexanuclear polyoxometalates [M6O19](2-) of the six-valence-electron metals including the d-elements M = Cr, Mo, W, Sg from group 6 and the f-elements M = Nd, U. Scalar relativistic density functional theory was applied to these clusters in vacuum and in solution. It is shown that the Oh Lindqvist structure of the isolated [M6O19](2-) units with hexavalent M elements (M(+6)) is only stable for the three heavy transition metals M = Mo, W, and Sg. The rare Th symmetry is predicted for M = U both in vacuum and in solution, owing to pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion of these closed-shell systems. The Oh and Th structures correspond to cyclic "aromatic" U-̇O-̇U and alternating U=O-U bonding of cross-linked U4O4 rings, respectively. The reduced [U6O19](8-) cluster with pentavalent U(+5) also shows Th symmetry in vacuum, but Oh symmetry in a dielectric environment. The occurrence of different structures for varying fractional oxidation states in different environments is rationalized. Theoretical investigation of the recently synthesized U(+5) complex [U6O13L6](0) (L6 = tetracyclopentadienyl dibipyridine) shows a distorted Th-type symmetry, too. The stabilities of these complexes of different metal oxidation states are consistent with the general periodic trends of oxidation states.
