Abstract:A pyramid approach for multimodality image registration based on mutual information is presented. The image pyramid is obtained by using the wavelet transform. An exhaustive search algorithm at the coarsest level of the image pyramid is developed. Image partitioning and gray level intensity binning are used to increase the fidelity of the process. Because of the fact that image partitioning is used, our algorithm has the potential to be parallelized and implemented on a multiprocessor computer. Our algorithm has been applied on remotely sensed images. The results show that our algorithm performs fairly well.
Elevated CO2 can modify the response to a water status gradient in a steppe grass: from cell organelles to photosynthetic capacity to plant growth

Abstract:BackgroundThe atmospheric CO2 concentration is rising continuously, and abnormal precipitation may occur more frequently in the future. Although the effects of elevated CO2 and drought on plants have been well reported individually, little is known about their interaction, particularly over a water status gradient. Here, we aimed to characterize the effects of elevated CO2 and a water status gradient on the growth, photosynthetic capacity, and mesophyll cell ultrastructure of a dominant grass from a degraded grassland.ResultsElevated CO2 stimulated plant biomass to a greater extent under moderate changes in water status than under either extreme drought or over-watering conditions. Photosynthetic capacity and stomatal conductance were also enhanced by elevated CO2 under moderate drought, but inhibited with over-watering. Severe drought distorted mesophyll cell organelles, but CO2 enrichment partly alleviated this effect. Intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) and total biomass water use efficiency (WUEt) were increased by elevated CO2, regardless of water status. Plant structural traits were also found to be tightly associated with photosynthetic potentials.ConclusionThe results indicated that CO2 enrichment alleviated severe and moderate drought stress, and highlighted that CO2 fertilization’s dependency on water status should be considered when projecting key species’ responses to climate change in dry ecosystems.

Abstract:Increasing warming, atmospheric CO2 and drought are expected to change the water dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. Yet, limited knowledge exists about how the interactive effects of these factors will affect grassland water uptake, and whether adaptations in fine root production and traits will alter water uptake capacity. In a managed C3 grassland, we tested the individual and combined effects of warming (+3°C), elevated CO2 (eCO2; +300 ppm) and drought on root water uptake (RWU) as well as on fine root production, trait adaptation, and fine root‐to‐shoot production ratios, and their relationships with RWU capacity. High temperatures, amplified by warming, exacerbated RWU reductions under drought, with negligible water‐sparing effects from eCO2. Drought, both under current and future (warming, eCO2) climatic conditions, shifted RWU towards deeper soil layers. Overall, RWU capacity related positively to fine root production and specific root length (SRL), and negatively to mean root diameters. Warming effects on traits (reduced SRL, increased diameter) and the ratio of fine root‐to‐shoot production (increased) were offset by eCO2. We conclude that under warmer future conditions, irrespective of shifts in water sourcing, it is particularly hot droughts that will lead to increasingly severe restrictions of grassland water dynamics.

Abstract:Warming, watering and elevated atmospheric CO2-concentration effects have been extensively studied separately; however, their combined impact on plants is not well understood. In the current research, we examined plant growth and physiological responses of three dominant species from the Eurasian Steppe with different functional traits to a combination of elevated CO2, high temperature, and four simulated precipitation patterns. Elevated CO2 stimulated plant growth by 10.8–41.7 % for a C3 leguminous shrub, Caragana microphylla, and by 33.2–52.3 % for a C3 grass, Stipa grandis, across all temperature and watering treatments. Elevated CO2, however, did not affect plant biomass of a C4 grass, Cleistogenes squarrosa, under normal or increased precipitation, whereas a 20.0–69.7 % stimulation of growth occurred with elevated CO2 under drought conditions. Plant growth was enhanced in the C3 shrub and the C4 grass by warming under normal precipitation, but declined drastically with severe drought. The effects of elevated CO2 on leaf traits, biomass allocation and photosynthetic potential were remarkably species-dependent. Suppression of photosynthetic activity, and enhancement of cell peroxidation by a combination of warming and severe drought, were partly alleviated by elevated CO2. The relationships between plant functional traits and physiological activities and their responses to climate change were discussed. The present results suggested that the response to CO2 enrichment may strongly depend on the response of specific species under varying patterns of precipitation, with or without warming, highlighting that individual species and multifactor dependencies must be considered in a projection of terrestrial ecosystem response to climatic change.

Abstract:Fifty-four infants with the malabsorption syndrome and cow's milk intolerence seen during 1962-1971 were investigated. All had diarrhoea and failed to thrive. Most had vomiting and about 20% had atopic eczema and recurrent respiratory infections. Laboratory investigations revealed malabsorption, raised serum IgA, and precipitins to cow's milk. Biopsies showed that the jejunal mucosa was damaged, and in about half the cases was flat. The patient did well on human milk but reacted clinically to cow's milk challenge, either in a few hours or gradually during 3-4 weeks. Some patients showed first a quick, but later a slow, reaction. Clinical symptoms of cow's milk intolerance disappeared at the age of about one year. At that time 81% had normal faecal fat, but only 29% had a normal proximal jejunal mucosa. Many of the patients developed intolerances to other food proteins, such as soya and wheat, if these were given during the sensitive period. Forty-two patients have been followed up for 2 years on a normal gluten-containing diet. Of these, 37 have a normal or nearly normal jejunal mucosa and 5 (12%) have subtotal villous atrophy indicative of coeliac disease. It is concluded that the malabsorption syndrome with cow's milk intolerance is a clear-cut clinical entity. However, the symptomatology, results of laboratory tests, and jejunal biopsy findings closely resemble those of other entities where damage to the intestinal mucosa causes a malabsorption snydrome. Follow-up studies showed that the disease is transient, but about 10% of the patients have coeliac disease, regarded in such cases as the primary disorder.

Abstract:Climate change due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions affects plant performance globally. To improve crop resilience, we need to understand the effects of elevated CO2 concentration (e[CO2]) on CO2 assimilation and Rubisco biochemistry. However, the interactive effects of e[CO2] and abiotic stress are especially unclear. This study analyses the CO2 effect on photosynthetic capacity under different water availability and temperature conditions in 42 different crop species, varying in functional group, photosynthetic pathway and phenological stage. We analysed close to 3000 data points extracted from 120 published manuscripts. For C3 species, e[CO2] increases net photosynthesis and intercellular [CO2], while reducing stomatal conductance and transpiration. Vmaxc, Rubisco in vitro extractable maximal activity and content also decrease with e[CO2] in C3 species, while C4 crops are less responsive to e[CO2]. The interaction with drought and/or heat stress does not significantly alter these photosynthetic responses, indicating that the photosynthetic capacity of stressed plants responds to e[CO2]. Moreover, e[CO2] has strong effect on the photosynthetic capacity of grasses mainly in the final stages of development. This study provides insight into the intricate interactions within the plant photosynthetic apparatus under the influence of climate change, enhancing the understanding of mechanisms governing plant responses to environmental parameters.

Response of Growth and Water Use Efficiency of Spring Wheat to Whole Season Co2 Enrichment and Drought

Abstract:Whole-growing season pot experiments were conducted to examine the response of growth and water use efficiency ( WUE) of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Gaoyuan 602) to CO2 enrichment. Wheat plants were grown in open-top chambers (OTCs) subject to two concentrations of CO2 ( [CO2 ]) ( 350 and 700 muL/L, hereafter "ambient" and "elevated" respectively) and three soil water levels (80%, 60% and 40% field water capacity ( FWC), hereafter "high soil moisture", 11 medium soil moisture" and "low soil moisture" respectively). Elevated CO2 greatly increased leaf net photosynthesis ( Pn) at all three soil water levels. The Pn of plants growing under elevated [CO2] was 22 % lower than that of plants growing at ambient [ CO2] when measured with the same [CO2] (700 muL/L). Plant growth was enhanced by elevated [CO2] throughout the growing season, with an increase of 14.8% in shoot dry weight at harvest under high soil moisture, and leaf area was increased by about 20 % at all three soil water levels. Elevated [CO2] in combination with high soil moisture increased the ratio of plant shoot dry weight to height by 15.7%, while this ratio was decreased by over 50 % when plants were subject to drought. Elevated [CO2] also increased the water use efficiency of wheat, mainly due to decreases in transpiration and cumulative consumption of water, and an increase in shoot dry weight, with the biggest value of 30% occurring at high soil water moisture level. Compared to high soil moisture, drought decreased shoot dry weight by 72% under ambient [CO2], and by 76% under elevated [ CO2] Similarly, drought also reduced WUE by 19 % under ambient [ CO2 ], and 23 % under elevated [ CO2] Our results indicate that: (1) elevated [CO2] can increase the photosynthetic rates, g:rowth and WUE of wheat plants; (2) long-term exposure to high [CO2] may result in lower photosynthetic capacity; (3) high [CO2] stimulates plants lateral growth more than vertical growth; (4) the effects Of CO2 enrichment on plants depend on soil water status, with plants benefiting more from CO2 enrichment if sufficient water is supplied; and (5) drought may cause relatively more reduction in plant g:rowth and WUE under future elevated [ CO2] conditions.
Greater impact of extreme drought on photosynthesis of grasslands exposed to a warmer climate in spite of acclimation

Abstract:In view of the projected increase in the frequency of extreme events during this century, we investigated the impact of a drought extreme on leaf ecophysiological parameters and carbon isotope composition (delta(13)C) of grassland communities with species richness (S) of one, three or nine species. The communities, grown for 3 years at either ambient air temperatures (ambient T(air)) or ambient T(air) + 3 degrees C (elevated T(air)), were additionally subjected to an imposed drought by withholding water for 24 days. During the previous 3 years equal precipitation was applied in both temperature treatments, thus communities at elevated T(air) had experienced more frequent, mild droughts. However, it was unknown whether this resulted in a higher resistance for facing extreme droughts. At similar soil matric potentials stomatal conductance (g(s)) and transpiration (Tr) were higher at elevated than ambient T(air), indicating acclimation to lower soil water content. Despite the stomatal acclimation observed, plants in elevated T(air) showed a lower resistance to the drought extreme as indicated by their lower photosynthetic rate (A(max)), g(s) and Tr during the entire duration of the drought extreme. Lower values for A(max), Tr and g(s) were also recorded in species at S = 3 as compared with species at S = 1 for both temperature treatments, but no further differences with S = 9 suggesting that stress was not alleviated at higher S-levels. The discrimination of (13)C was poorly correlated with measurements of instantaneous leaf water-use efficiency (A(max)/Tr) and, with this time scale and sampling method, it was not possible to detect any potential change in plant water-use efficiency using leaf delta(13)C.

Abstract:Belowground plant responses have received much less attention in climate change experiments than aboveground plant responses, thus hampering a holistic understanding of climate change effects on plants and ecosystems. In addition, responses of plant roots to climate change have mostly been studied in single-factor experiments. In a Danish heathland ecosystem, we investigated both individual and combined effects of elevated CO2, warming and drought on fine root length, net production and standing biomass by the use of minirhizotrons, ingrowth cores and soil coring. Warming increased the net root production from ingrowth cores, but decreased fine root number and length in minirhizotrons, whereas there were no significant main effects of drought. Across all treatments and soil depths, CO2 stimulated both the total fine root length (+44%) and the number of roots observed (+39%), with highest relative increase in root length in the deeper soil layers. Our results suggest that under future climate, plants may allocate considerable resources into roots compared to aboveground biomass. Increased carbon (C) allocation to roots may have a great impact on the overall ecosystem C balance and must be considered in modelling of future ecosystem responses to climate change. To provide models with necessary validation data, more studies are needed to investigate if higher C allocation to roots will lead to long-term C storage in more recalcitrant soil C pools or if this potential increase in soil carbon storage may be offset by increased priming activity and turnover rates for soil organic matter.

Abstract:The effects of drought, CO2 concentration and temperature increasing on development period, photosynthesis rate (Pn), evapotranspiration (ET), and water use efficiency of spring wheat were investigated. The results showed that elevated CO2 concentration (550, 700 mumol.mol-1) could lengthen heading-ripening period, but high temperature (average diurnal temperature increase 4.8 degrees C), which made heading-ripening period shorten and speeded the seedling under treatment of both high CO2 concentration and high temperature, affected growing period more than high CO2 concentration. The combined effects of elevated CO2 concentration and temperature enhanced Pn, stomatal resistance (r), leaf water use efficiency (WUEl), and whole-canopy water use efficiency (WUE), while transpiration rate (E) were not significantly affected. The effects on ET depended on soil moisture. High CO2 concentration and high temperature enhanced ET under high (75%-85% field water capacity) and middle (55%-65% field water capacity) soil moisture, but decrease ET under low soil moisture (35%-45% field water capacity).

Abstract:Adverse climate change attributed to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration (CO2) and increased temperature components of global warming has been a central issue affecting economic and social development. Climate change, particularly global warming, imposes a severe impact on the terrestrial ecosystem. Elevated CO2, drought, and high temperature have been extensively documented individually; however, relatively little is known about how plants respond to the interaction of these factors. To summarize current knowledge on the response of plants to global change factors, we focus on the interactive effects of CO2 enrichment, warming, and drought on plant growth, carbon allocation, and photosynthesis. Stimulation due to elevated CO2 might be suppressed under other negative climatic/environmental stresses such as drought, high temperature, and their combination. However, elevated CO2 could alleviate deleterious effects of moderate drought via reducing stomatal conductance, altering leaf surface, and regulating gene expression. High CO2 levels and rising temperatures may result in opposite responses in plant water use efficiency. Stimulation of plant growth due to elevated CO2 for C3 species occurs regardless of water conditions, but only under a water deficit for C4 species. The positive effect of elevated CO2 on C4 species is derived mainly from the improved water status. Plant adaptive or maladaptive responses to multivariate environments are interactive; thus, researchers need to explore the ecological underpinnings involved in such responses to the multiple factors involved in climate change.

Strong responses of growth and photosynthesis of five C3 pasture species to elevated CO2 at low temperatures

Abstract:Five cool-season C3 pasture species (Bromus willdenowii Kunth, Festuca arundinacea Schreb, Lolium multiflorum Lam., Lolium perenne L. and Trifolium repens L.) were grown at a constant temperature of 12°C to assess effects of elevated CO2 on growth and photosynthesis. Plants were grown at either 350 or 700 μmol mol-1 CO2 for 42-56 d, after which they were destructively harvested to assess biomass. At the same time, leaf gas exchange was measured at 12°C for each species at both CO2 concentrations. Photosynthetic response to CO2, that is the A/Ci curve, was also measured. Results showed all species responded to elevated CO2 at low temperature by increasing total biomass, relative to that at ambient CO2, from 105 to 158%. T. repens and B. willdenowii had the smallest response, and the two Lolium species had the greatest response. Photosynthesis also responded strongly to elevated CO2 at low temperature, increasing on average by 40%. Only small growth CO2 effects occurred with the A/Ci curves, with lower CO2-saturated photosynthesis only for L. perenne and T. repens grown at elevated CO2. The photosynthetic response to CO2 was not correlated with the growth response. However, the product of photosynthesis and leaf area, that is carbon supply, was highly correlated with the growth rate, and growth CO2 had a marked effect. Results suggest T. repens responded poorly to elevated CO2 at low temperature because of a low capacity to fix carbon, while both Lolium species responded strongly at low temperature because of a high capacity to fix CO2. Changes to photosynthetic model parameters are now required to account for growth temperature effects on the CO2 response.
Interactive Effect of Elevated CO2 and Reduced Summer Precipitation on Photosynthesis is Species-Specific: The Case Study with Soil-Planted Norway Spruce and Sessile Oak in a Mountainous Forest Plot

Abstract:We investigated how reduced summer precipitation modifies photosynthetic responses of two model tree species—coniferous Norway spruce and broadleaved sessile oak—to changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Saplings were grown under mountainous conditions for two growing seasons at ambient (400 μmol CO2 mol–1) and elevated (700 μmol CO2 mol–1) CO2 concentration. Half were not exposed to precipitation during the summer (June–August). After two seasons of cultivation under modified conditions, basic photosynthetic characteristics including light-saturated rate of CO2 assimilation (Amax), stomatal conductance (GSmax), and water use efficiency (WUE) were measured under their growth CO2 concentrations together with in vivo carboxylation rate (VC) and electron transport rate (J) derived from CO2-response curves at saturating light. An increase in Amax under elevated CO2 was observed in oak saplings, whereas it remained unchanged or slightly declined in Norway spruce, indicating a down-regulation of photosynthesis. Such acclimation was associated with an acclimation of both J and VC. Both species had increased WUE under elevated CO2 although, in well-watered oaks, WUE remained unchanged. Significant interactive effects of tree species, CO2 concentration, and water availability on gas-exchange parameters (Amax, GSmax, WUE) were observed, while there was no effect on biochemical (VC, J) and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The assimilation capacity (Asat; CO2 assimilation rate at saturating light intensity and CO2 concentration) was substantially reduced in spruce under the combined conditions of water deficiency and elevated CO2, but not in oak. In addition, the stimulatory effect of elevated CO2 on Amax persisted in oak, but completely diminished in water-limited spruce saplings. Our results suggest a strong species-specific response of trees to reduced summer precipitation under future conditions of elevated CO2 and a limited compensatory effect of elevated CO2 on CO2 uptake under water-limited conditions in coniferous spruce.

Abstract:Background and aims: Leaf elongation is vital for Poaceae species' productivity, influenced by atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and climate-induced water availability changes. Although [CO2] mitigates the effects of drought on reducing transpiration per unit leaf area, it also increases total leaf area and water use. These complex interactions associated with leaf growth pose challenges in anticipating climate change effects. This study aims to assess [CO2] effects on leaf growth response to drought in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and wheat (Triticum aestivum). Methods: Plants were cultivated in growth chambers with [CO2] at 200 or 800 ppm. At leaf six to seven unfolding, half of the plants were subjected to severe drought treatment. Leaf elongation rate (LER) was measured daily, whereas plant transpiration was continuously recorded gravimetrically. Additionally, water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content along with water and osmotic potentials in the leaf growing zone were measured at drought onset, mid-drought and leaf growth cessation. Key results: Elevated [CO2] mitigated drought impacts on LER and delayed growth cessation across species. A positive correlation between LER and soil relative water content (SRWC) was observed. At the same SRWC, perennial grasses exhibited a higher LER with elevated [CO2], likely due to enhanced stomatal regulation. Despite stomatal closure and WSC accumulation, CO2 did not influence nighttime water potential or osmotic potential. The marked increase in leaf area across species resulted in similar (wheat and tall fescue) or higher (ryegrass) total water use by the experiment's end, under both watered and unwatered conditions. Conclusions: In conclusion, elevated [CO2] mitigates the adverse effects of drought on leaf elongation in three Poaceae species, due to its impact on plant transpiration. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into CO2 and drought interactions that may help anticipate plant responses to climate change.

Here, we evaluated the effects of elevated [CO2] (∼600 μmol mol-1) and warming (+2 °C increase temperature) on the photochemistry of photosystem II and the photoprotection strategies of a tropical C4 forage Panicum maximum Jacq. grown in a Trop-T-FACE facility under well-watered conditions without nutrient limitation. Analysis of the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), the effective PSII quantum yield Y(II), the quantum yield of regulated energy dissipation Y(NPQ), the quantum yield of non-regulated energy dissipation Y(NO), and the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in leaves revealed that the photosynthetic apparatus of plants did not suffer photoinhibitory damage, and plants did not increase lipid peroxidation in response to warming and [CO2] enrichment. Plants under warming treatment showed a 12% higher chlorophyll contents and a 58% decrease in α-tocopherol contents. In contrast, carotenoid composition (zeaxanthin and β-carotene) and ascorbate levels were not altered by elevated [CO2] and warming. The elevated temperature increased both net photosynthesis rate and aboveground biomass but elevated [CO2] increased only net photosynthesis. Adjustments in chlorophyll, de-epoxidation state of the xanthophylls cycle, and tocopherol contents suggest leaves of P. maximum can acclimate to 2 °C warmer temperature and elevated [CO2] when plants are grown with enough water and nutrients during tropical autumn-winter season.

Abstract:Extreme heat waves and drought are predicted to increase in frequency and magnitude with climate change. These extreme events often co-occur, making it difficult to separate their direct and indirect effects on important ecophysiological and carbon cycling processes such as photosynthesis. Here, we assessed the independent and interactive effects of experimental heat waves and drought on photosynthesis in Andropogon gerardii, a dominant C4 grass in a native mesic grassland. We experimentally imposed a two-week heat wave at four intensity levels under two contrasting soil moisture regimes: a well-watered control and an extreme drought. There were three main findings from this study. First, the soil moisture regimes had large effects on canopy temperature, leading to extremely high temperatures under drought and low temperatures under well-watered conditions. Second, soil moisture mediated the photosynthetic response to heat; heat reduced photosynthesis under the well-watered control, but not under the extreme drought treatment. Third, the effects of heat on photosynthesis appeared to be driven by a direct thermal effect, not indirectly through other environmental or ecophysiological variables. These results suggest that while photosynthesis in this dominant C4 grass is sensitive to heat stress, this sensitivity can be overwhelmed by extreme drought stress.

Abstract:Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide accelerates growth and modifies physiological responses in plants. Over the last 40 years, the global scientific community had taken up initiatives to make out the role of plants in capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. This review consolidates the research of the past three decades on the responses of grass species to elevated levels of CO2. An enhancement in intercellular CO2 concentration, water use efficiency, photosynthesis, total non-structural carbohydrates, and total biomass was noticed in grass species under controlled growth systems supplied with varying levels of CO2. Each of these responses reflects the potency of grasses to survive and store ample carbon in CO2-enriched environments. Reduction in stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and total nitrogen concentration was in effect positive responses, in connection with the acclimatization of plants at CO2-enriched environments. This review ascertains that in experimental microclimatic environments with varying CO2 regimes or varying treatment duration, grasses show positive growth responses. Thus it illustrates the efficient atmospheric carbon sequestration of grasses irrespective of their photosynthetic pathway (whether C3/C4).
Effects of Warming and Elevated CO2 on Stomatal Conductance and Chlorophyll Fluorescence of C3 and C4 Coastal Wetland Species

Abstract:Coastal wetland communities provide valuable ecosystem services such as erosion prevention, soil accretion, and essential habitat for coastal wildlife, but are some of the most vulnerable to the threats of climate change. This work investigates the combined effects of two climate stressors, elevated temperature (ambient, + 1.7 °C, + 3.4 °C, and 5.1 °C) and elevated CO 2 ( e CO 2 ), on leaf physiological traits of dominant salt marsh plant species. The research took place at the Salt Marsh Accretion Response to Temperature eXperiment (SMARTX) at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, which includes two plant communities: a C 3 sedge community and a C 4 grass community. Here we present data collected over five years on rates of stomatal conductance (g s ), quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry ( F v / F m ), and rates of electron transport (ETR max ). We found that both warming and e CO 2 caused declines in all traits, but the warming effects were greater for the C 3 sedge. This species showed a strong negative stomatal response to warming in 2017 and 2018 (28% and 17% reduction, respectively in + 5.1 °C). However, in later years the negative response to warming was dampened to < 7%, indicating that S. americanus was able to partially acclimate to the warming over time. In 2022, we found that sedges growing in the combined + 5.1 °C e CO 2 plots exhibited more significant declines in g s , F v /F m , and ETR max than in either treatment individually. These results are important for predicting future trends in growth of wetland species, which serve as a large carbon sink that may help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Abstract:It has been reported that elevated CO2 can enhance plant growth and water use, and that desert plants in particular will show the strongest response to rising atmospheric CO2 due to the strong water stress on these plants. In this study experiments were conducted to understand the responses of seedlings from four species, which are dominant in different successional stages in the semi-arid sandy grassland of central Inner Mongolia, to rising temperature and elevated CO2. Seedlings of the four species were grown for 8 weeks at two air temperatures and two CO2 concentration regimes in growth chambers. It was found that for the two Artemisia species and Hedysarum laeve elevated CO2 level resulted in increased relative growth rates (RGR) (6–12%), height increments (24–106%), net assimilation rates (20–45%) and water use efficiencies (WUE) (43–105%), and decreased transpiration (16–55%). For Caragana korshinskii, the elevated CO2 significantly increased the ratio of below ground to above ground biomass (16–23%), height increment (31–65%) and WUE (79–84%). At elevated CO2 level and the higher temperature, the two Artemisia species showed decreased RGR and height increments, while for, C. korshinskii and H. laeve increased RGR and height increments were observed. For A. sphaerocephala the higher temperature also resulted in increased WUE, but decreased WUE for the other three species. Obvious differences were observed between the two Artemisia species and C. korshinskii, with the Artemisia species characterized by higher RGR, lower ratio of below ground to above ground biomass and lower WUE. These findings should be applicable to similar shrub species located in other arid and semi-arid environments.
