Abstract:BACKGROUND:This study aimed to investigate the effects of a high- and low-sodium diets on lithogenesis in a rat experimental model of calcium oxalate stones.METHODS:Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups; group A: 4% NaCl+1% ethylene glycol (EG); group B: 8% NaCl+1% EG; group C: 8% NaCl+normal drinking-water; group D: 1% EG +normal diet. All rats were sacrificed 4 weeks later, and blood samples were collected from the heart. The kidneys were collected for Von Kossa staining to evaluate the formation of calcium-containing crystals. The last 24-h urine samples were also gathered for metabolic analysis.RESULTS:Von Kossa staining demonstrated that the rats in both group A and group B had significantly more renal calcium crystals than those in group D. However, 24-h urinary volume increased significantly (142.26±20.91 mL) in group B compared with group A (100.52±28.23 mL), group C (107.36±14.24 mL), group D (40.79±8.71 mL) (P=0.004, 0.012, and 0.000 respectively). Level of urine sodium (Na), potassium (K), chlorine (Cl), and calcium (Ca), urea nitrogen were significantly higher in group B compared with group D. The urine phosphorus, oxalate, and creatinine levels; urine specific gravity; and urine PH were similar between group B and group D. The level of serum sodium was higher in group B (151.26±4.06 mmol/L) compared with group D (145.56±1.12 mmol/L) (P=0.002).CONCLUSIONS:A high sodium intake might increase the risk of lithogenesis in susceptible individuals (given by EG) or in individuals with water restriction.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Rongshi granule on renal stone formation in rat urolithiasis model. METHOD Rats of the stone group were given oxalamide while the Rongshi granule groups (low dose group、middle dose group and high dose group) were adminstrated by Rongshi granule in addition to receiving oxalamide. Control rats were treated with saline. Positive rats were treated with christina loosestrife herb granule in addition to receiving oxalamide . The variables measured were the contents of oxalic acid and calcium in kidneys, the incidence of kidney stone, and the rate of crystal areas in kidney. RESULTS The number of renal, ureter and bladder stone formation was lower in the high dose groups than in the stone group. The contents of oxalic acid and calcium,and the percentage of crystal area were significantly lower in all of the Rongshi granule groups than in the stone group. CONCLUSION Rongshi granule was effective in preventing and treating Urolithiasis of rats induced by oxalamide.

Abstract:Excessive sodium intake is associated with nephrolithiasis, but the impact of sodium-deficient (SD) diets is unknown. Hence, we investigated the effects of short- and long-term SD diets on the expression of renal aquaporins and sodium transporters, and thus calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal formation in hyperoxaluria rats. In a short-term sodium balance study, six male rats received drinking water and six received 0.75% ethylene glycol (EG) to induce hyperoxaluria. After a 30-day period of feeding on normal chow, both groups were treated with a normal-sodium diet for 5 days, followed by a sodium-free diet for the next 5 days. In a long-term SD study (42 days), four groups, induced with EG or not, were treated with normal-sodium water and sodium-free drinking water, alternately. Short-term sodium restriction in EG rats reversed the daily positive sodium balance, but progressively caused a negative cumulative water balance. In the long-term study, the abundant levels of of Na/H exchanger, thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter, Na-K-ATPase, and aquaporins-1 from SD + EG rats were markedly reduced, corresponding to a decrease in Uosm, as compared to SD rats. Increased urine calcium, AP(CaOx)index, and renal CaOx deposition were also noted in SD + EG rats. Although the SD treatment reduced sodium excretion, it also increased urinary calcium and impaired renal function, ultimately causing the formation of more CaOx crystals.
Prophylactic effects of quercetin and hyperoside in a calcium oxalate stone forming rat model

Abstract:Quercetin and hyperoside (QH) are the two main constituents of the total flavone glycosides of Flos Abelmoschus manihot, which has been prescribed for treating chronic kidney disease for decades. This study aimed to investigate the effect of QH on calcium oxalate (CaOx) formation in ethylene glycol (EG)-fed rats. Rats were divided into three groups: an untreated stone-forming group, a QH-treated stone-forming group (20 mg/kg/day) and a potassium citrate-treated stone-forming group (potassium citrate was a worldwide-recognized calculi-prophylactic medicine). Ethylene glycol (0.5 %) was administered to the rats during the last week, and vitamin D3 was force-fed to induce hyperoxaluria and kidney calcium oxalate crystal deposition. 24 h urine samples were collected before and after inducing crystal deposits. Rats were killed and both kidneys were harvested after 3 weeks. Bisected kidneys were examined under a polarized light microscope for semi-quantification of the crystal-formation. The renal tissue superoxide dismutase and catalase levels were measured by Western blot. QH and potassium citrate have the ability to alkalinize urine. The number of crystal deposits decreased significantly in the QH-treated stone-forming group as compared to the other groups. Superoxide dismutase and catalase levels also increased significantly in the QH-treated stone-forming group, as compared with the untreated stone-forming group. QH administration has an inhibitory effect on the deposition of CaOx crystal in EG-fed rats and may be effective for preventing stone-forming disease.

Abstract:To study the effect of high osmotic pressure milk formula on renal calcium oxalate crystallization induced by calcium oxalate. 40 SD rats were randomly divided into four groups: NC, MC, LOM and HOM group. For model preparation, MC, LOM and HOM were treated with 1% Ethanediol in the water combined with 2% ammonium chloride (2ml/day) intragastrically administration. The rats in LOM and HOM were intragastrically given LOM or HOM (40g/100ml, 2ml/100g*bw) twice/day, whereas the NC and MC group received an equal volume of distilled water. Combined application of ethylene glycol and ammonium chloride caused renal injury of rats, and induced calcium oxalate calculus in kidney. During experimental period, the increase of body weight of the rats treated with HOM was inhibited significantly; the amount of 24h urination, serum levels of Cr and UA, ratio of the kidney to body weight were significantly higher than those in MC group; the amount of 24h urination, Cr, and score of calcium oxalate crystal were significantly higher than those in LOM group. HOM has an obvious promoting effect on the formation of renal calcium oxalate crystallization induced by ethylene glycol combined with ammonium chloride.
Orthosiphon grandiflorum has a protective effect in a calcium oxalate stone forming rat model

Abstract:This study amied to investigate the effects of Orthosiphon grandiflorum on the renal tubular cell injury induced by oxalate and the inhibitory effects of O. grandiflorum on urinary deposit formation in an animal model and compared the results with those from a potassium citrate treatment. Rats were divided into three groups: an untreated stone-forming group, an O. grandiflorum-treated stone-forming group and a potassium citrate-treated stone forming group. Ethylene glycol (0.5%) was administered to the rats during the last week, and vitamin D3 (0.5 mum) was force fed to induce hyperoxaluria and kidney calcium oxalate crystal deposition. Twenty-four hour urine samples were collected before and after inducing crystal deposits. Rats were killed and both kidneys were harvested after 3 weeks. Bisected kidneys were examined under a polarized light microscope to determine the number of crystals. The renal tissue superoxide dismutase and catalase levels were measured by Western blot. Oxidative stress was examined by 8-OHdG immunohistofluorescence. O. grandiflorum and potassium citrate have the ability to alkalinize urine. Among all groups, the number of crystal deposits and the level of 8-OHdG staining decreased significantly in the O. grandiflorum-treated stone forming group, as compared to the other groups. Superoxide dismutase and catalase levels also increased significantly in the O. grandiflorum-treated stone-forming group, as compared with the untreated stone-forming group. The results indicate that O. grandiflorum has a significant inhibitory effect on crystal deposition in the calcium oxalate-stone-forming rat model.
Atorvastatin Decreases Renal Calcium Oxalate Stone Deposits by Enhancing Renal Osteopontin Expression in Hyperoxaluric Stone-Forming Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet

Abstract:Calcium oxalate (CaOx) is the major constituent of kidney stones. Growing evidence shows a close connection between hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and the formation of kidney stones. Owing to their antioxidant properties, statins control hyperlipidemia and may ameliorate CaOx stone formation. The present study was designed to investigate the suppressive effects of statins on CaOx urolithiasis and their potential mechanism. We used rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD) to achieve hyperlipidemia (HL) and hydroxyproline (HP) water to establish a hyperoxaluric CaOx nephrolithiasis model; the animals were administered statins (A) for 28 days. The rats were divided into eight groups treated or not with A, i.e., Control, HP, HL, HL + HP. HL aggravated urinary calcium crystallization compared to the control. Due to increased expression of renal osteopontin (OPN), a key anti-lithic protein, and reduced free radical production, the calcium crystals in the urinary bladder increased as renal calcium deposition decreased. The levels of the ion activity product of CaOx (AP(CaOx)) decreased after statins administration, and AP(Calcium phosphate) (CaP) increased, which suggested the dominant calcium crystal composition changed from CaOx to CaP after statin administration. In conclusion, atorvastatin decreases renal CaOx stone deposits by restoring OPN expression in hyperoxaluric rats fed a HFD.
Do Factor VIII Concentrates Cause Passive Immunization to Hepatitis B in Multitransfused Patients?

Abstract:In our hemophilia and von Willebrand patients we have since 1977 regularly analyzed HBs Ag, anti-HBs and anti-HBc. In our experience almost all of the patients with hemophilia A or von Willebrand's disease who have received continuous prophylactic treatment or frequent on demand treatment with factor VIII concentrates (Hemofil@, Octonative@ and AHF@, fraction I-0 respectively) for 2-3 years have developed antibodies to the surface and/or the core antigens of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). We have regarded this as a result of repeated minor infections with HBV transmitted by the factor VIII concentrates. In accordance with this view patients who have developed antibodies have maintained their antibody titers. In 1981 we investigated 19 patients all of whom had HBV antibodies, but none was Hbantigen positive. However, at reexamination 1984 five of these patients were found to have inprotective levels of antibodies. In addition, one of the patients had earlier a low anti-HAV IgG titre which also had disappeared during a two years period. Three of these patients had von Willebrand's disease and were treated with fraction I{ throughout the observation period. The other two patients with hemophilia A had during this three years period changed from treatment with Hemotil to treatment with Octonative. It is well known that even highly purified concentrates contain 200-500 mg IgG per 100 ml. This would of course imply the possibility of passive immunization of the recipients. Taking the long half life of the immunoglobulins and the frequent treatments into consideration even a low frequency of batches containing anti-HBs or anti-HBc would probably in these patients lead to long-standing levels of anti-HBc and/or anti-HBs. During the last 2-3 years the AIDS problem and the possible transfer of an AIDS transmitting agent present in the blood products have prompted a much more vigorous screening of the blood donors. Before the identification of HTLV III as a very likely cause of AIDS, hepatitis B markers were best correlated to AIDS. After a more careful selection of blood donors in order to exclude possible AIDS carriers it is reasonable to assume that also the frequency of anti-HBs/anti-HBc positive donors has decreased. It seems essential to us that hemophiliacs previously regarded as immune to HBV are retested and vaccinated if they have low or no levels of anti-HBs. The possibility of passive immunization through treatment should also be considered in the discussion and evaluation of HBV infectivity of different factor concentrates. These patients have later been vaccinated against hepatitis B and all of them have responded normally and developed antibodies. Four of these patients had no HTLV III antibodies and Th.rfiupp rstios of >1.1 (reference value >0.8). One hemophilia A patient had HTLV III antibodies and a low Th"rfiupp rotio, 0.5, but even he developed HB, antibodies normally after vaccination.
Catechin Prevents the Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate Induced Renal Calcium Crystallization in NRK-52E Cells and the Ethylene Glycol Induced Renal Stone Formation in Rat

Abstract:Background: Reactive oxygen species play important roles in renal calcium crystallization. In this study, we examined the effects of catechin, which have been shown to have antioxidant properties on the renal calcium crystallization. Methods: In the vitro experiment, the changes of the mitochondrial membrane potential, expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD), 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), cytochrome c, and cleaved caspase 3 were measured to show the effects of catechin treatment on the NRK-52E cells induced by calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM). In the vivo study, Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 1% ethylene glycol (EG) to generate a rat kidney stone model and then treated with catechin (2.5 and 10 mg/kg/day) for 14 days. The urine and serum variables were dected on 7 and 14 days after EG administration. The expression of cytochrome c, cleaved caspase 3, SOD, osteopontin (OPN), malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in kidney were measured. Furthermore, the mitochondrial microstructure in the kidney was also examined by transmission electron microscopy. Results: Catechin treatment could prevent the changes in mitochondrial membrane potential and expression of SOD, 4-HNE, cytochrome c, and cleaved caspase 3 in NRK-52E cells induced by the COM. For the in vivo experiments, the EG administration induced renal calcium crystallization was also prevented by the catechin. The expression of SOD, OPN, MDA, OPN and 8-OHdG, were increased after EG administration and this increase was diminished by catechin. Moreover, catechin also prevented EG induced mitochondrial collapse in rat. Conclusions: Catechin has preventive effects on renal calcium crystallization both in vivo and in vitro, and provide a potential therapeutic treatment for this disease.
Effect of potential renal acid load of foods on urinary citrate excretion in calcium renal stone formers

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the potential renal acid load (PRAL) of the diet on the urinary risk factors for renal stone formation. The present series comprises 187 consecutive renal calcium stone patients (114 males, 73 females) who were studied in our stone clinic. Each patient was subjected to an investigation including a 24-h dietary record and 24-h urine sample taken over the same period. Nutrients and calories were calculated by means of food composition tables using a computerized procedure. Daily PRAL was calculated considering the mineral and protein composition of foods, the mean intestinal absorption rate for each nutrient and the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, oxalate, urate, citrate, and creatinine levels were measured in the urine. The mean daily PRAL was higher in male than in female patients (24.1+/-24.0 vs 16.1+/-20.1 mEq/day, P=0.000). A significantly (P=0.01) negative correlation (R=-0.18) was found between daily PRAL and daily urinary citrate, but no correlation between PRAL and urinary calcium, oxalate, and urate was shown. Daily urinary calcium (R=0.186, P=0.011) and uric acid (R=0.157, P=0.033) were significantly related to the dietary intake of protein. Daily urinary citrate was significantly related to the intakes of copper (R=0.178, P=0.015), riboflavin (R=0.20, P=0.006), piridoxine (R=0.169, P=0.021) and biotin (R=0.196, P=0.007). The regression analysis by stepwise selection confirmed the significant negative correlation between PRAL and urinary citrate (P=0.002) and the significant positive correlation between riboflavin and urinary citrate (P=0.000). Urinary citrate excretion of renal stone formers (RSFs) is highly dependent from dietary acid load. The computation of the renal acid load is advisable to investigate the role of diet in the pathogenesis of calcium stone disease and it is also a useful tool to evaluate the lithogenic potential of the diet of the individual patient.
Calcium and vitamin D have a synergistic role in a rat model of kidney stone disease

Abstract:Vitamin D supplementation in humans should be accompanied by calcium administration to avoid bone demineralization through vitamin D receptor signaling. Here we analyzed whether long-term exposure of rats to vitamin D supplementation, with or without a calcium-rich diet, would promote kidney stone formation. Four groups of rats received vitamin D alone (100,000 UI/kg/3 weeks), a calcium-enriched diet alone, both vitamin D supplementation and calcium-enriched diet, or a standard diet (controls) for 6 months. Serum and urine parameters and crystalluria were monitored. Kidney stones were assessed by 3-dimensional micro-computed tomography, infrared spectroscopy, von Kossa/Yasue staining, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Although serum calcium levels were similar in the 4 groups, rats receiving vitamin D had a progressive increase in urinary calcium excretion over time, especially those receiving both calcium and vitamin D. However, oral calcium supplementation alone did not increase urinary calcium excretion. At 6 months, rats exposed to both calcium and vitamin D, but not rats exposed to calcium or vitamin D alone, developed significant apatite kidney calcifications (mean volume, 0.121 mm(3)). Thus, coadministration of vitamin D and increased calcium intake had a synergistic role in tubular calcifications or kidney stone formation in this rat model. Hence, one should be cautious about the cumulative risk of kidney stone formation in humans when exposed to both vitamin D supplementation and high calcium intake.

Magnesium Decreases Urine Supersaturation but Not Calcium Oxalate Stone Formation in Genetic Hypercalciuric Stone-Forming Rats

Abstract:Background/Aims: Hypercalciuria is the most common identifiable risk factor predisposing to CaOx stone formation. Increased oral magnesium intake may lead to decreased CaOx stone formation by binding intestinal Ox leading to decreased absorption and/or binding urinary Ox to decrease urinary supersaturation. This study assessed the effect of oral magnesium on 24-h urine ion excretion, supersaturation, and kidney stone formation in a genetic hypercalciuric stone-forming (GHS) rat model of human idiopathic hypercalciuria. Methods: When fed the oxalate precursor, hydroxyproline, every GHS rat develops CaOx stones. The GHS rats, fed a normal calcium and phosphorus diet supplemented with hydroxyproline to induce CaOx, were divided into three groups of ten rats per group: control diet with 4.0 g/kg MgO, low MgO diet (0.5 g/kg), and high MgO diet (8 g/kg). At 6 weeks, 24-h urines were collected, and urine chemistry and supersaturation were determined. Stone formation was quantified. Results: The GHS rats fed the low and high Mg diets had a significant reduction and increase, respectively, in urinary Mg compared to those fed the control diet. Dietary Mg did not alter urine Ca excretion while the low Mg diet led to a significant fall in urinary Ox. Urine supersaturation with respect to CaOx was significantly increased with low Mg, whereas urine supersaturation was significantly decreased with high Mg. There was no effect of dietary Mg on stone formation within 6 weeks of treatment. Conclusion: Dietary magnesium decreases urine supersaturation but not CaOx stone formation in GHS rats.

Abstract:In the last decade novel sensing technologies enabled development of applications that help individuals with chronic diseases monitor their health and activities. These applications often generate large volumes of data that need to be processed and analyzed. At the same time, many of these applications target non-professionals and individuals of advanced age and low educational level. These users may find the data collected by the applications challenging and overwhelming, rather than helpful, and may require additional assistance in interpreting it. In this article we discuss two different approaches to designing computing applications that not only collect the relevant health and wellness data but also find creative ways to engage individuals in the analysis and assist with interpretation of the data.
The effect of calcium on calcium oxalate monohydrate crystal-induced renal epithelial injury

Abstract:Since hypercalciuria is a common feature of idiopathic calcium oxalate (CaOx) nephrolithiasis, renal epithelial cells of stone patients are exposed to various crystals in the presence of high calcium. This study was performed to determine the effect of high calcium levels on CaOx crystal-induced cell injury. We exposed human renal epithelial cell line, HK2 in vitro to CaOx monohydrate crystals at a concentration of 133 microg/cm(2) for 1, 3, 6 or 12 h in the presence or absence of 5 or 10 mM/L calcium Ca(++). We determined the release of lactate dehydrogenase as marker of injury and hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and 8-isoprostane (8-IP) as sign of oxidative stress. Cells were also examined after trypan blue and nuclear DNA staining with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole to determine their membrane integrity and apoptosis respectively. Exposure of cells to 5 or 10 mM/L of Ca(++,) for up-to 6 h, resulted in increased trypan blue and DAPI staining and production of H(2)O(2). Similarly an exposure to CaOx crystals also resulted in increased trypan blue and DAPI staining and H(2)O(2) production. An exposure to 5 mM/L Ca or CaOx crystals also resulted in increased production of 8-IP. A combination of the two treatments, Ca and CaOx crystals, did not show anymore changes than exposure to high Ca or CaOx crystals alone, except in the case of a longer exposure of 12 h. Longer exposures of 12 h resulted in cells sloughing from the substrate. These results indicate that exposure to high levels of Ca or CaOx crystals is injurious to renal epithelial cells but the two do not appear to work synergistically. On the other hand, results of our earlier studies suggest that oxalate and CaOx crystals work in synergy, i.e., CaOx crystals are more injurious in the presence of high oxalate. Perhaps Ox and CaOx crystals activate different biochemical pathways while Ca and CaOx crystals affect the identical pathways.
Effect of diet-induced hypercholesterolemia on kidney of healthy rats

Abstract:Purpose: To Investigate the effect of diet-induced hyperchole sterolemia on the kidney of Wistar rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were fed with normal chow supplemented with 5 % cholesterol and observed biochemical changes in plasma lipid concentration, urinary microalbumin excretion, renal function, lipid component in renal cortices and morphological changes at 30, 60 and 90 days. Results: Total plasma cholesterol (TCh) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) concentration were significantly elevated in the group E (P<0.05) at 30 days, and progressively increased thereafter, but during the entire study, there ere no differences in plasma urea nitrogen(BUN), creatinine(Cr), and endogenous creatinine clearance (Ccr) between the two groups. Quantitative urinary microalbumin excration was markely elevated in group E (P<0.05). Cholesterol(Ch), phosphatidylcholine(PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine(PE) levels of the renal cortices were sigificantly increased in the group E at 12 weeks. Progressive development in mesangial hypercellulary, increased mesangial matrix, glomerular capillaries collapes were observed in the group E. No electron dense deposits were observed in any of the glomeruli examined. There was a siginificant positive correlation for the urinary microalbumin, Ch in the renal corticres, and glomerular size with plasma TCh and LDL concentration. Conclusions: The diet-induced hypercholesterolemia may cause lipid nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats.
Renal handling of calcium in hypercalciuric calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis

Abstract:In order to gain further insight into the mechanisms of calcium (Ca) homeostasis in hypercalciuria, we studied 32 lithiasic patients who were divided into three groups: normocalciuric patients (NC; n = 11), patients with absorptive hypercalciuria (AH; n = 12) and patients with renal hypercalciuria (RH; n = 9). The patients were investigated on 3 occasions: during a random diet, after a Ca-restricted diet and during a Ca tolerance test. The following determinations were made: Ca intake, Ca tubular reabsorption (Ca TR), plasma 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, natriuresis and urinary protein-bound Gla. The latter was measured as a marker of urinary nephrocalcin excretion. Ca TR was decreased in hypercalciuric patients (HC). AH but not RH patients normalized their Ca TR during fasting. Plasma PTH and 1,25(OH)2D levels were similar in all the groups on the 3 occasions. Natriuresis was elevated in RH during the fasting period (p < 0.02 vs. AH). Compared with NC, protein-bound Gla urinary excretion rates (UER) were enhanced in AH after the Ca-restricted period (p < 0.02) and in RH during fasting (p < 0.02). In AH, a strong positive correlation was found between Ca TR and protein-bound Gla UER (r = 0.79, p = 0.002) following a Ca-restricted diet. In the HC group as a whole, fasting protein-bound Gla UER were correlated to plasma 1,25(OH)2D levels (r = 0.68, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the results suggest that PTH directly or indirectly through 1,25(OH)2D increases nephrocalcin synthesis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Relationship of animal protein-rich diet to kidney stone formation and calcium metabolism

Abstract:We wished to determine whether different types of dietary protein might have different effects on calcium metabolism and on the propensity for renal stone formation. Fifteen young normal subjects were studied during three 12-day dietary periods during which their diet contained vegetable protein, vegetable and egg protein, or animal protein. While these three diets were constant with respect to Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, and quantity of protein, they had progressively higher sulfur contents. As the fixed acid content of the diets increased, urinary calcium excretion increased from 103 +/- 15 ( +/- SEM) mg/day (2.6 +/- 0.4 mmol/day) on the vegetarian diet to 150 +/- 13 mg/day (3.7 +/- 0.3 mmol/day) on the animal protein diet (P less than 0.02). Despite the increased urinary calcium excretion, there was a modest reduction of urinary cAMP excretion and serum PTH and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels consistent with acid-induced bone dissolution. There was no change in fractional intestinal 47Ca absorption. The inability to compensate for the animal protein-induced calciuric response may be a risk factor for the development of osteoporosis. The animal protein-rich diet was associated with the highest excretion of undissociated uric acid due to the reduction in urinary pH. Moreover, citrate excretion was reduced because of the acid load. However, oxalate excretion was lower than during the vegetarian diet [26 +/- 1 mg/day (290 +/- 10 mumol/day) vs. 39 +/- 2 mg/day (430 +/- 20 mumol/day); P less than 0.02]. Urinary crystallization studies revealed that the animal protein diet, when its electrolyte composition and quantity of protein were kept the same as for the vegetarian diet, conferred an increased risk for uric acid stones, but, because of opposing factors, not for calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate stones.
Acute subdural hematoma with subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by an intracranial aneurysm: a case report.

Abstract:The occurrence of a subdural hematoma caused by the rupture of an intracranial aneurysm is rare. In our case, the patient is a 43-year-old woman who suffered from sudden onset of severe headache. Computed tomographic (CT) scan disclosed a subdural hematoma associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage. CT angiography and digital subtraction angiography revealed an elongated aneurysm adhering to the dura in the left Sylvian fissure. The subdural hematoma was evacuated and the aneurysm clipped. The patient made a full recovery.
