Abstract:Mercury (Hg), and its organic forms, are some of the most hazardous elements, with strong toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation in marine organisms. Hg accumulation in continuous trophic levels (TL) in marine food chains remains unclear. In this study, individual invertebrate and fish samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary adjacent sea were grouped into continuous TL ranges, and the bioaccumulations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed. The trophic magnification factor in invertebrates and fish was 1.40 and 1.72 for THg, and 2.56 and 2.17 for MeHg, indicating that both THg and MeHg were significantly biomagnified with increasing TL in both invertebrates and fish through trophic transfer. To evaluate the health risk of seafood consumption, the target hazard quotient (THQ) was calculated. Increasing THQ values indicated that the health risks of invertebrate and fish consumption in humans, especially children, were both elevated with increasing TL. THQ values > 1 indicated that consumption of invertebrates at a TL above 4.0 and fish above 4.5 may pose a relatively higher risk for children. Therefore, the consumption of both individual invertebrates and fish at high trophic positions may present greater health risk, especially in young children.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the quality of contraceptive services in Finland varies by the type of care provider. DESIGN: A cross sectional questionnaire survey. PARTICIPANTS: A random sample of 3000 Finnish women aged 18-44 years (response rate 74%) in 1994. RESULTS: Almost all women (94%) had used contraception at some time and 75% were current users. Although self care was common (29% had obtained their latest method outside the health services), 83% had sometimes used the health services for contraception. For their last visit, 55% of women had chosen a health centre (a publicly administered and funded health service), and 33% a private unit. In the health centre, the care provider was usually a general practitioner or a public health nurse, whereas in private care the providers were gynaecologists. Women who used private care were more likely to be from higher social classes and urban areas. After adjustment for a women's background, the two groups were similar for most indicators of the quality of care, but access to care and woman's experiences of treatment were better with private care. CONCLUSIONS: In terms of availability and choices the current system of contraceptive services in Finland is adequate. It is not always an integral part of municipal primary health care, and many women prefer private care for gynaecological services; this may case problems of comprehensiveness and equality of care.

Abstract:Accurate measurements of the 1000-eV noncoplanar symmetric (e,2e) reaction on argon are reported. Cross-section calculations are carried out with use of both the plane-wave and distorted-wave impulse approximations. The distorted-wave impulse approximation describes accurately both the 3p and 3s angular correlations and their relative cross sections. The plane-wave impulse approximation overestimates the 3s cross section relative to the 3p and underestimates cross sections at large angles. The 3s spectroscopic factors are assigned up to a separation energy of 55 eV and the distorted-wave impulse calculation verifies that all the 3s strength has been found.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) poses high toxicity to organisms including algae. Studies showed that the growth and photosynthesis of green algae such as Chlorella are vulnerable to Hg stress. However, the differences between the activities and tolerance of photosystem I and II (PSI and PSII) of green microalgae under Hg exposure are still little known. Responses of quantum yields and electron transport rates (ETRs) of PSI and PSII of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to 0.05−1 mg/L Hg2+ were simultaneously measured for the first time by using the Dual-PAM-100 system. The photosystems were isolated to analyze the characteristics of toxicity of Hg during the binding process. The inhibition of Hg2+ on growth and photosystems was found. PSII was more seriously affected by Hg2+ than PSI. After Hg2+ exposure, the photochemical quantum yield of PSII [Y(II)] decreased with the increase in non-photochemical fluorescence quenching [Y(NO) and Y(NPQ)]. The toxic effects of Hg on the photochemical quantum yield and ETR in PSI were lower than those of PSII. The stimulation of cyclic electron yield (CEF) was essential for the stability and protection of PSI under Hg stress and played an important role in the induction of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The results showed a strong combination ability of Hg ions and photosystem particles. The number of the binding sites (n) of Hg on PSII was more than that of PSI, which may explain the different toxicity of Hg on PSII and PSI.
Contrary effects of phytoplankton Chlorella vulgaris and its exudates on mercury methylation by iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a pervasive environmental pollutant and poses serious health concerns as inorganic Hg(II) can be converted to the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), which bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in food webs. Phytoplankton, representing the base of aquatic food webs, can take up Hg(II) and influence MeHg production, but currently little is known about how and to what extent phytoplankton may impact Hg(II) methylation by itself or by methylating bacteria it harbors. This study investigated whether some species of phytoplankton could produce MeHg and how the live or dead phytoplankton cells and excreted algal organic matter (AOM) impact Hg(II) methylation by several known methylators, including iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB), Geobacter anodireducens SD-1 and Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA, and the sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ND132 (or Pseudodesulfovibrio mercurii). Our results indicate that, among the 4 phytoplankton species studied, none were capable of methylating Hg(II). However, the presence of phytoplankton cells (either live or dead) from Chlorella vulgaris (CV) generally inhibited Hg(II) methylation by FeRB but substantially enhanced methylation by SRB D. desulfuricans ND132. Enhanced methylation was attributed in part to CV-excreted AOM, which increased Hg(II) complexation and methylation by ND132 cells. In contrast, inhibition of methylation by FeRB was attributed to these bacteria incapable of competing with phytoplankton for Hg(II) binding and uptake. These observations suggest that phytoplankton could play different roles in affecting Hg(II) methylation by the two groups of anaerobic bacteria, FeRB and SRB, and thus shed additional light on how phytoplankton blooms may modulate MeHg production and bioaccumulation in the aquatic environment.
Methylmercury Effect and Distribution in Two Extremophile Microalgae Strains Dunaliella salina and Coccomyxa onubensis from Andalusia (Spain)

Abstract:The main entrance point of highly toxic organic Hg forms, including methylmercury (MeHg), into the aquatic food web is phytoplankton, which is greatly represented by various natural microalgal species. Processes associated with MeHg fate in microalgae cells such as uptake, effects on cells and toxicity, Hg biotransformation, and intracellular stability are detrimental to the process of further biomagnification and, as a consequence, have great importance for human health. The study of MeHg uptake and distribution in cultures of marine halophile Dunaliella salina and freshwater acidophilic alga Coccomyxa onubensis demonstrated that most of the MeHg is imported inside the cell, while cell surface adhesion is insignificant. Almost all MeHg is removed from the culture medium after 72 h. Significant processes in rapid MeHg removal from liquid medium are its abiotic photodegradation and volatilization associated with algal enzymatic activity. The maximum intracellular accumulation for both species was in 80 nM MeHg-exposed cultures after 24 h of exposure for D. salina (from 27 to 34 μg/gDW) and at 48 h for C. onubensis (up to 138 μg/gDW). The different Hg intakes in these two strains could be explained by the lack of a rigid cell wall in D. salina and the higher chemical ability of MeHg to pass through complex cell wall structures in C. onubensis. Electron microscopy studies on the ultrastructure of both strains demonstrated obvious microvacuolization in the form of many very small vacuoles and partial cell membrane disruption in 80 nM MeHg-exposed cultures. Results further showed that Coccomyxa onubensis is a good candidate for MeHg-contaminated water reclamation due to its great robustness at nanomolar concentrations of MeHg coupled with its very high intake and almost complete Hg removal from liquid medium at the MeHg levels tested.

Abstract:As the first step of methylmercury (MeHg) entry into the aquatic food webs, MeHg uptake by phytoplankton is crucial in determining the final human MeHg exposure risks. MeHg availability to plankton is regulated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water, while the extent of the impacts can vary largely based on the sources of DOM. Here, we investigated impacts of DOM sources on MeHg bioconcentration by three freshwater phytoplankton species (i.e. S. quadricauda, Chlorella sp., Microcystis elabens) in the laboratory system. We found that algae-derived DOM would prohibited the cellular MeHg bioconcentration by a percent up to 77–93%, while the soil-derived DOM didn't show similar inhibition effects. DOM characterization by the excitation‒emission matrices, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, ultra‒high performance liquid chromatography‒tandem quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry shown that the molecular size of S-containing compound, rather than thiol concentration, has played a crucial role in regulating the MeHg uptake by phytoplankton. Climate change and increasing nutrient loadings from human activities may affect plankton growth in the freshwater, ultimately changing the DOM compositions. Impacts of these changes on cellular MeHg uptakes by phytoplankton should be emphasized when exploring the aquatic Hg cycling and evaluating their risks to human beings and wild life.

Metabolomic Responses of Green Alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Exposed to Sublethal Concentrations of Inorganic and Methylmercury

Abstract:Metabolomics characterizes low-molecular-weight molecules involved in different biochemical reactions and provides an integrated assessment of the physiological state of an organism. By using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry targeted metabolomics, we examined the response of green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to sublethal concentrations of inorganic mercury (IHg) and monomethylmercury (MeHg). We quantified the changes in the levels of 93 metabolites preselected based on the disturbed metabolic pathways obtained in a previous transcriptomics study. Metabolites are downstream products of the gene transcription; hence, metabolite quantification provided information about the biochemical status of the algal cells exposed to Hg compounds. The results showed that the alga adjusts its metabolism during 2 h exposure to 5 × 10–9 and 5 × 10–8 mol L–1 IHg and MeHg by increasing the level of various metabolites involved in amino acid and nucleotide metabolism, photorespiration, and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, as well as the metabolism of fatty acids, carbohydrates, and antioxidants. Most of the metabolic perturbations in the alga were common for IHg and MeHg treatments. However, the exposure to IHg resulted in more pronounced perturbations in the fatty acid and TCA metabolism as compared with the exposure to MeHg. The observed metabolic perturbations were generally consistent with our previously published transcriptomics results for C. reinhardtii exposed to the comparable level of IHg and MeHg. Abstract:Phytoplankton serves as a key entry point for the trophic transfer and bioaccumulation of the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic food webs. However, it is unclear whether and how phytoplankton itself may degrade and metabolize MeHg in the dark. Here, using several strains of the freshwater alga Chlorella vulgaris, the marine diatom Chaetoceros gracilis and two cyanobacteria (or blue-green algae), we report a light-independent pathway of MeHg degradation in water by phytoplankton, rather than its associated bacteria. About 36–85% of MeHg could be degraded intracellularly to inorganic Hg(II) and/or Hg(0) via dark reactions. Endogenic reactive oxygen species, particularly singlet oxygen, were identified as the main driver of MeHg demethylation. Given the increasing incidence of algal blooms in lakes and marine systems globally, these findings underscore the potential roles of phytoplankton demethylation and detoxification of MeHg in aquatic ecosystems and call for improved modelling and assessment of MeHg bioaccumulation and environmental risks. This research reveals a previously unrecognized yet potentially widespread biological pathway of methylmercury detoxification, which may exert important controls on the net production and bioaccumulation of the methylmercury toxin in aquatic food webs.

Abstract:Phytoplankton represents a large group of phototrophic microscopic organisms in freshwater and seawater and serve as a key entry point for the trophic transfer and bioaccumulation of the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic food webs. However, whether phytoplankton could degrade and metabolize MeHg is unknown, despite early recognition that algal blooms lead to decreased levels of MeHg in fish. The present study was aimed at determining: (1) whether or not certain phytoplankton species are capable of degrading MeHg, either in the dark or under sunlit conditions; and (2) whether the degradation occurs in vivo , and what are the potential mechanisms responsible for MeHg degradation. We provide experimental evidence indicating a novel pathway of MeHg degradation by freshwater and marine phytoplankton independent of light. The freshwater alga Chlorella vulgaris , the marine diatom Chaetoceros gracilis , and the cyanobacteria Microcystis sp. and Synechocystis sp. (also known as blue-green algae) converted 50–95% of MeHg (25 nM) to inorganic Hg intracellularly over 5 days in the dark. The dominant degradation products were elemental Hg(0) and/or Hg(II), although phytoplankton genomes do not contain the canonical mer -mediated demethylation pathway. Abstract:Mercury is a hazardous heavy metal that is distributed worldwide in aquatic ecosystems. Methylmercury (MeHg) poses significant toxicity risks to aquatic organisms, primarily through bioaccumulation and biomagnification, due to its strong affinity for protein thiol groups, which results in negative effects even at low concentrations. MeHg exposure can cause various physiological changes, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, metabolic disorders, genetic damage, and immunotoxicity. To assess the risks of MeHg contamination in actual aquatic ecosystems, it is important to understand how MeHg interacts with environmental factors such as temperature, pH, dissolved organic matter, salinity, and other pollutants such as microplastics and organic compounds. Complex environmental conditions can cause potential toxicity, such as synergistic, antagonistic, and unchanged effects, of MeHg in aquatic organisms. This review focuses on demonstrating the toxic effects of single MeHg exposure and the interactive relationships between MeHg and surrounding environmental factors or pollutants on aquatic organisms. Our review also recommends further research on biological and molecular responses in aquatic organisms to better understand the potential toxicity of combinational exposure.

Biodegradability of algal-derived dissolved organic matter and its influence on methylmercury uptake by phytoplankton

Abstract:Methylmercury (MeHg) uptake by phytoplankton represents a key step in determining the exposure risks of aquatic organisms and human beings to this potent neurotoxin. Phytoplankton uptake is believed to be negatively related to dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration in water. However, microorganisms can rapidly change DOM concentration and composition and subsequent impact on MeHg uptake by phytoplankton has rarely been tested. Here, we explored the influences of microbial degradation on the concentrations and molecular compositions of DOM derived from three common algal sources and tested their subsequent impacts on MeHg uptake by the widespread phytoplankton species Microcystis elabens. Our results indicated that dissolved organic carbon was degraded by 64.3‒74.1% within 28 days of incubating water with microbial consortia from a natural meso‑eutrophic river. Protein-like components in DOM were more readily degraded, while the numbers of molecular formula for peptides-like compounds had increased after 28 days' incubation, probably due to the production and release of bacterial metabolites. Microbial degradation made DOM more humic-like which was consistent with the positive correlations between changes in proportions of Peaks A and C and bacterial abundance in bacterial community structures as illustrated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Despite rapid losses of the bulk DOM during the incubation, we found that DOM degraded after 28 days still reduced the MeHg uptake by Microcystis elabens by 32.7‒52.7% relative to a control without microbial decomposers. Our findings emphasize that microbial degradation of DOM would not necessarily enhance the MeHg uptakes by phytoplankton and may become more powerful in inhibiting MeHg uptakes by phytoplankton. The potential roles of microbes in degrading DOM and changing the uptakes of MeHg at the base of food webs should now be incorporated into future risk assessments of aquatic Hg cycling.

Abstract:Investigation of mercury toxicology in green algae is of great importance from ecological point of view, because mercury has become a major contaminant in recent years. In higher plants, accumulation of mercury modifies many aspects of cellular functions. However, the process that mercury exerts detrimental effects on green algae is largely unknown. In this study, we performed an experiment focusing on the biological responses of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular model organism, to Hg2+-induced toxicity. C. reinhardtii was exposed to 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 μM Hg in media. Concentrations of Hg were negatively correlated with the cell growth. Treatment with Hg induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species and peroxidative products. Endogenous proline levels increased in Hg-exposed algae. Hg exposure activated superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). To get insights into the molecular response, a RT-PCR-based assay was performed to analyze the transcript abundance of Mn-SOD, CAT and APX. Our analysis revealed that expression of the genes was up-regulated by Hg exposure, with a pattern similar to the enzyme activities. Additional investigation was undertaken on the effect of Hg on the transcript amount of ∆1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase, a key enzyme of proline biosynthesis and on that of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an enzyme regulating heavy metal tolerance. Expressions of both P5CS and HO-1 were up-regulated by Hg. These data indicate that Hg-induced oxidative stress was responsible for the disturbance of the growth and antioxidant defensive systems in C. reinhardtii.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) compounds are widely distributed toxic environmental and industrial pollutants and they may bring danger to growth and development of aquatic organisms. The distribution of Hg species in the 3 percent NaCl solution was calculated using the chemical equilibrium model Visual MINTEQ, which demonstrated that Hg was mainly complexed by chlorides in the pH range 5.0–9.0 and the proportions of HgCl42−, HgCl3− and HgCl2(aq) reached to 95 percent of total Hg. Then the effects of cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and H+), anions (HCO3−, NO3−, SO42− and HPO42−) and complexing agents (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and dissolved organic matter (DOM)) on Hg toxicity to Photobacterium phosphoreum were evaluated in standardized 15min acute toxicity tests. The significant increase of 6.3-fold in EC50 data with increasing pH was observed over the tested pH range of 5.0–8.0, which suggested the possible competition between hydroxyl and the negatively charged chloro-complex. By contrast, it was found that major cations (Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+) have little effect on Hg toxicity to P. phosphoreum. An interesting finding was that the addition of HPO42− significantly increased Hg toxicity, which may imply that the addition of phosphate increased the soluble Hg–chloro complex species. Additions of complexing agents (EDTA and DOM) into the exposure water increased Hg bioavailability via complexation of Hg. Finally, a model which incorporated the effect of pH, HPO42−, HCO3−, SO42− and DOM on Hg toxicity was developed to predict acute Hg toxicity for P. phosphoreum, which may be a useful tool in setting realistic water quality criteria for different types of water.
Competitive Binding Kinetics of Methylmercury-Cysteine with Dissolved Organic Matter: Critical Impacts of Thiols on Adsorption and Uptake of Methylmercury by Algae.

Abstract:Complexes with low-molecular-weight thiols are crucial species of methylmercury (MeHg) excreted by anaerobic Hg-methylating microbes, notably, MeHg-cysteine (MeHg-Cys). As MeHg-Cys diffuses into surface water, it would undergo a ligand exchange process with dissolved organic matter (DOM) under nonsulfidic conditions, inevitably altering MeHg speciation and bioavailability to phytoplankton. In this study, we investigated the competitive binding kinetics between MeHg-Cys and Suwannee River natural organic matter, and their influence on the adsorption and uptake of MeHg by the cyanobacterium, Synechocystis sp. PCC6803. Liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed to monitor the kinetics processes involving competition of DOM with Cys for MeHg binding, which revealed that competitive binding kinetics were dictated by the abundance of thiol moieties in DOM. Thiol concentrations of 0.97 and 49.34 mu mol of thiol (g C)(-1) resulted in competitive binding rate constant (k values) of 0.30 and 3.47 h(-1), respectively. Furthermore, the time-dependent competitive binding of DOM toward MeHg-Cys significantly inhibited MeHg adsorption and uptake by cyanobacteria, an effect that was amplified by an increased thiol abundance in DOM. These findings offer valuable insights into the kinetic characteristics of MeHg's fate and transport, as well as their impact on bioconcentration in aquatic organisms within natural aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:The effects of natural dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from different origins (estuarine, coastal, and diatom decomposed) and chloride (Cl) on the uptake of inorganic mercury [Hg(II)] and methylated mercury (MeHg) by the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana was investigated using radiotracer techniques. We first developed a new method to remove the surface adsorbed mercury and quantified the intracellular mercury uptake by the diatoms. The dominant mercury species (DOC or chloride complexes, based on the mercury speciation phase diagrams) was controlled by the concentrations of DOC and Cl(-), which could explain the effects of DOC and Cl(-) on mercury uptake. DOC complexes dominated Hg(II)'s speciation and reduced its uptake in most seawater examined. DOC complexes dominated MeHg's speciation only at relatively high DOC levels (>100 muM), but it could affect MeHg uptake even when MeHg-Cl complexes dominated. In a mercury-DOC complex dominated system, both the origin and quantity of DOC greatly influenced mercury uptake by the diatoms. Although DOC generally inhibited the uptake of Hg(II) or MeHg, DOC resulting from diatom decomposition enhanced Hg(II) uptake. Under conditions dominated by chloride complexation, neutral mercury chloride species (HgCl(2) or MeHgCl) may control the uptake.

Abstract:The bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) within the pelagic food webs is a crucial determinant of the MeHg concentration in the organisms at higher trophic levels. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is recognized for its influence on mercury (Hg) cycling in the aquatic environment because of its role in providing metabolic substrate for heterotrophic organism and serving as a strong ligand for MeHg. However, the impact of DOM on MeHg bioaccumulation in pelagic food chains remain controversial. Here, we explored MeHg bioaccumulation within a pelagic food web in China, in the eutrophic Bohai Sea and adjacent seas, covering a range of DOM concentrations and compositions. Our findings show that elevated concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and phytoplankton biomass may contribute to a reduction in MeHg uptake by phytoplankton. Moreover, we observe that a higher level of autochthonous DOM in the water may result in more significant MeHg biomagnification in zooplankton. This can be explained by alterations in the structure of pelagic food webs and/or an increase in the direct consumption of DOM and particulate organic matter (POM) containing MeHg. Our study offers direct field monitoring evidence of dual roles played by DOM in regulating MeHg transfers from water to phytoplankton and zooplankton in coastal pelagic food webs. A thorough understanding of the intricate interactions is essential for a more comprehensive evaluation of ecological risks associated with MeHg exposure in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:In estuarine food webs, bivalve molluscs transfer nutrients and pollutants to higher trophic levels. Mercury (Hg) pollution is ubiquitous, but it is especially elevated in estuaries historically impacted by industrial activities, such as those in the U.S. Northeast. Monomethylmercury (MeHg), the organic form of Hg, is highly bioaccumulative and transferable in the food web resulting in the highest concentrations in the largest and oldest marine predators. Patterns of Hg concentrations in marine bivalve molluscs, however, are poorly understood. In this study, inorganic Hg (iHg), MeHg, and the total Hg (THg) in soft tissues of the northern quahogs ( Mercenaria mercenaria ), eastern oysters ( Crassostrea virginica ), and ribbed mussels ( Geukensia demissa ) from eastern Long Island sound, a temperate estuary of the western North Atlantic Ocean was investigated. In all three species, concentrations of THg remained similar between the four sampling months (May, June, July, and September), and were mostly independent of animal size. In quahogs, MeHg and iHg displayed significant ( p < 0.05) positive (iHg in May and June) and negative (MeHg in July and September) changes with shell height. Variability in concentrations of THg, MeHg, and iHg, both inter- and intra-specifically was high and greater in quahogs and oysters (THg: 37, 39%, MeHg: 28, 39%, respectively) than in mussels (THg: 13%, MeHg: 20%). The percentage of THg that was MeHg (%MeHg) was also highly variable in the three species (range: 10–80%), highlighting the importance of measuring MeHg and not only THg in molluscs.

Abstract:Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) attendance is predictive of increased abstinence for many problem drinkers and treatment referral to AA is common. Strong encouragement to acquire an AA sponsor is likewise typical, and findings about the benefits associated with social support for abstinence in AA support this practice, at least indirectly. Despite this widespread practice, however, prospective tests of the unique contribution of having an AA sponsor are lacking. This prospective study investigated the contribution of acquiring an AA sponsor using a methodologically rigorous design that isolated the specific effects of AA sponsorship. Participants were recruited from AA and outpatient treatment. Intake and follow-up assessments included questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and urine toxicology screens. Eligibility criteria limited prior treatment and AA histories to clarify the relationship of interest while, for generalizability purposes, broad substance abuse criteria were used. Of the 253 participants, 182 (72%) provided complete data on measures central to the aims of this study. Overall reductions in alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine use were found over 12-months and lagged analyses indicated that AA attendance significantly predicted increased abstinence. During early AA affiliation but not later logistic regressions showed that having an AA sponsor predicted increased alcohol-abstinence and abstinence from marijuana and cocaine after first controlling for a host of AA-related, treatment, and motivational measures that are associated with AA exposure or are generally prognostic of outcome.
