Abstract:Children regularly consume foods from quick service restaurants (QSRs) in the United States, but little is known about how ordering decisions are made and the impact on selection and consumption. A total of n = 218 parents dining with a child (ages 4–16 years) inside a participating QSR completed interviews and demographic surveys and provided their child’s leftover foods at the end of the meal. Children’s meal consumption was measured using plate-waste methodology. The majority of children selected their meal without parental involvement (80%) and decided what to order prior to entering the QSR (63%). Using mixed-model analysis of variance, children selected and consumed significantly fewer calories and less total fat and sodium when a parent ordered the meal compared with when the child ordered the meal alone. There were no significant differences in selection or consumption when a parent and child ordered the meal together. Approximately one-third of the children consumed foods that were shared. In conclusion, because children primarily select foods without parental involvement and prior to entering QSRs, innovative strategies are needed to influence ordering decisions inside QSRs toward healthier options. Additionally, because food is frequently shared, policies that only focus on children’s menus may not be as effective in impacting children’s dietary intake.

Abstract:Parenting style influences a child's overall diet quality and establishes food preferences. Parenting style and "food rules" for children differ by eating at home or away from home. Eating meals away from home is increasing despite associations with consumption of unhealthy foods and higher weight status. The objective of the current study was to compare parenting practices and decision-making at restaurants versus at home. A mixed methods approach was utilized: facilitated, individual interviews to explore decision-making and parenting practices; written questionnaires for socio-demographic information; and body mass index. Summaries and emergent themes were generated based on examination of tapes and transcripts. Descriptive statistics were computed for questionnaire data. Twenty-five mothers of children of five to eight years who ate at restaurants at least two times per week participated. Mothers reported more permissive food rules at restaurants yet maintained higher behavioral expectations. Mothers were also more likely to make decisions about whether they eat out, where to eat, and children's meal selections than their children. The findings suggest that parenting practices toward overall behavior and food choices may differ at restaurants than at home, highlighting the importance of healthy menu options, further research, and educational strategies.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to examine peer perceptions of a parent dining in a fast-food restaurant with their child. Design/methodology/approach A vignette approach was used to explore consumer assumptions and normative data using a four-country online survey of parents, with 1,200 respondents (300 from each of Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA). The study included qualitative and quantitative thematic analyses of the responses. Findings Family dining in fast-food restaurants was most often associated with an opportunity for family time together (25%), a treat (25%) and an unhealthy food decision (19%). For some, this is a normal meal that should not be judged (11%), for others, this is merely a meal of easy convenience (9%). Fathers, when depicted as the parent in the vignette, were more likely to be praised for spending time with their children, while mothers were more likely to be critiqued for making poor nutritional choices. Respondents from the USA viewed fast-food family dining more favourably than respondents from Australia, Canada or the UK. Social implications Despite rising obesity in these four countries, only 19% of respondents focused on the unhealthy element of the food choice, suggesting that perhaps this element is not on the forefront of consumer decision considerations. Originality/value This paper confirms parental peer perception differences, based on gender and country, regarding opinions on a child dining with a parent in a fast-food restaurant.

Association Between Access to Full-Service Restaurants and Childhood Obesity.

Abstract:The lack of access to full-service restaurants (FSRs) is generally thought to be a risk factor for childhood obesity, as it could discourage healthful eating-out behaviours while increasing the exposure to unhealthful food venues as "compensatory" options. However, the association between FSR access and childhood obesity has not been comprehensively reviewed previously. A literature search was conducted on PubMed and Web of Science for articles published before 1 January 2019 that examined the association between FSR access and weight-related behaviours and outcomes among children and adolescents. Eighteen studies conducted in three countries were identified, published from 2006 to 2018 with a median sample size of 2352 (ranging from 323 to 529 367). Findings were mixed among these 18 studies that reported on the association between access to FSRs and weight-related outcomes. Our meta-analyses showed that there were no significant associations of FSR access with the level of body mass index (BMI) and the BMI z-score among children. Also, there was no apparent evidence on the association between FSR access and the risk of overweight/obesity. Our results need to be interpreted with caution, considering the menu quality of FSRs and heterogeneity of eligible studies in this meta-analysis. Well-designed epidemiologic studies are warranted to further elaborate on the potential association between FSR access and children's weight status.
Fast food for family meals: relationships with parent and adolescent food intake, home food availability and weight status

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of fast-food purchases for family meals and the associations with sociodemographic variables, dietary intake, home food environment, and weight status in adolescents and their parents. Design: This study is a cross-sectional evaluation of parent interviews and adolescent surveys from Project EAT (Eating Among Teens). Subjects: Subjects included 902 middle-school and high-school adolescents (53% female, 47% male) and their parents (89% female, 11% male). The adolescent population was ethnically diverse: 29% white, 24% black, 21% Asian American, 14% Hispanic and 12% other. Results: Results showed that parents who reported purchasing fast food for family meals at least 3 times per week were significantly more likely than parents who reported purchasing fewer fast-food family meals to report the availability of soda pop and chips in the home. Adolescents in homes with fewer than 3 fast-food family meals per week were significantly more likely than adolescents in homes with more fast-food family meals to report having vegetables and milk served with meals at home. Fast-food purchases for family meals were positively associated with the intake of fast foods and salty snack foods for both parents and adolescents; and weight status among parents. Fast-food purchases for family meals were negatively associated with parental vegetable intake. Conclusions: Fast-food purchases may be helpful for busy families, but families need to be educated on the effects of fast food for family meals and how to choose healthier, convenient family meals.

Abstract:Indulgent parent feeding styles have been linked to less healthful eating behaviors and higher BMI among children. Restaurants are becoming a frequent eating environment for children. Frequent intake of food from restaurants has been associated with increased weight status, making restaurants a target for childhood obesity prevention efforts. Currently, little research has considered parent feeding styles in restaurants and how they might differ from the home setting. Given the increased frequency of children's restaurant consumption, examining parent feeding styles in restaurants may contribute to future research in this area. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine parent feeding styles at home and in restaurants. Parents whose 3-to-8-year-old children dined out regularly completed a one-time, online survey in February/March 2022. The Caregiver's Feeding Style Questionnaire assessed parent feeding styles at home and in restaurants. Differences in feeding styles were examined across settings. Indulgent feeding styles were most common overall. Parents (n = 117; 92% mothers; 85% white; 61% reported household income > $75,000/year) reported higher demandingness at home (M = 2.6 ± 0.5) compared to restaurants (M = 2.4 ± 0.5; t(116) = 6.7, P < 0.001). Parents were more likely to use indulgent feeding styles (X2 = 11.6, P < 0.001) and less likely to use authoritarian feeding styles (X2 = 4.6, P < 0.05) in restaurants compared to the home, suggesting parent feeding styles are less structured in restaurants. Results may have implications for future healthy eating interventions in away-from-home contexts.

Novel One-Step Method for Detection and Isolation of Active-Toxin-Producing Clostridium difficile Strains Directly from Stool Samples

Abstract:ABSTRACT The alarming emergence of hypervirulent strains of Clostridium difficile with increased toxin production, severity of disease, morbidity, and mortality emphasizes the need for a culture method that permits simultaneous isolation and detection of virulent strains. The C. difficile toxins A and B are critical virulence factors, and strains can either be toxin-producing (virulent) or non-toxin-producing (nonvirulent). Strains that are isolated from human infections generally produce either toxin A or toxin B or both. The methods currently available for culturing C. difficile do not differentiate strains that produce active toxins from strains that do not produce toxins or produce inactive toxins. As a result, the identification and isolation of toxin-producing strains from stool is currently a two-step process. First, the stool is plated on a selective medium, and then suspected colonies are analyzed for toxin production or the presence of the toxin genes. We describe here a novel selective and differential culture method, the Cdifftox plate assay, which combines in a single step the specific isolation of C. difficile strains and the detection of active toxin. This assay was developed based on our recent finding that the A and B toxins of C. difficile cleave chromogenic substrates that have stereochemical characteristics similar to their natural substrate, UDP-glucose. The Cdifftox plate assay is shown here to be extremely accurate (99.8% effective) in detecting toxin-producing strains through the analysis of 528 C. difficile isolates selected from 50 tissue culture cytotoxicity assay-positive clinical stool samples. The Cdifftox plate assay advances and improves the culture approach such that only C. difficile strains will grow on this agar, and virulent strains producing active toxins can be differentiated from nonvirulent strains, which do not produce active toxins. This new method reduces the time and effort required to isolate and confirm toxin-producing C. difficile strains.
Do Parents Perceive That Organized Activities Interfere with Family Meals? Associations between Parent Perceptions and Aspects of the Household Eating Environment

Abstract:Background: Research has related child participation in organized activities to health and academic benefits; however, participation may interfere with family meals. Objective: Examine whether parents perceive child participation in organized activities to interfere with family meals and how perceptions are related to the household eating environment. Design: A cross-sectional analysis was completed using survey data collected in 2015-2016 as part of the Project EAT (Eating and Activity in Teens and Young Adults) cohort study. Participants: Survey participants were originally recruited in Minneapolis-St Paul schools in 1998-1999. The analytic subsample of parents (one per household, n=389, 69% female, 31% nonwhite race, mean age=31) had one or more children involved in an organized activity. Approximately 33% of households included a child aged 2 to 5 and no older child; two thirds of households included school-aged children (6 to 18 years). Main outcome measures: Parents reported family meal frequency, family meal scheduling difficulties, frequency of at-home meal preparation, and their own intake of fast food, fruit, and vegetables. Statistical analyses performed: Analyses compared household environment characteristics reported by parents who perceived low interference between organized activities and family meals to characteristics reported by parents who perceived moderate to high interference from at least one form of activity. Regression models included a dichotomous indicator of interference as the independent variable and were adjusted for parental and household characteristics. Results: Among parents with children at any age, moderate to high interference was associated with lower family meal frequency, greater difficulty scheduling family meals, and more fast-food intake (all P≤0.01). The perception of moderate to high interference was more common among parents who reported involvement in both sport and nonsport activities (P<0.001) and those with a school-aged child (P<0.001) vs those with only preschool-aged children. Conclusions: Follow-up research, including qualitative studies, is needed to identify the specific aspects of child participation in organized activities (eg, scheduled time of day) that may interfere with family meals.
Examining the consumer restaurant environment and dietary intake in children

Abstract:Within the away-from-home food environment there is a need to account for individual exposure (e.g., frequency of visitation) to that environment. The present study examined the consumer environment in both proximal and visited restaurants and their association with childrens' diet quality and anthropometrics. A cross-sectional analysis used baseline data from the Neighborhood Impact on Kids (NIK) study (2007-2009). Participants were 6-12-year-olds living in King County, WA and San Diego County, CA. This analysis (conducted 2019-2020) examined relationships between nearby restaurant count, Nutrition Environment Measures Survey in Restaurants (NEMS-R) within the child's block group, and weighted NEMS-R scores based on the restaurant where the child ate most frequently in relation to child energy intake, Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2010) total score and anthropometrics. Children's HEI-2010 scores were associated with NEMS-R scores within block groups, with children in the lowest NEMS-R tertile having significantly higher HEI scores than participants in the middle tertile. Weighted NEMS-R scores were significantly associated with waist circumference, with children in the highest NEMS-R tertile having lower waist circumference than children in the lowest tertile. Nearby restaurant count was not associated with children's diet quality or anthropometrics. Our findings suggest the relationship between nutrition environment and child diet and anthropometrics varied depending on how nutrition environment was defined. However, findings may be limited by the low frequency of eating out reported in this sample. Food environment measures that account for individual-level behavior are needed to better understand the influence of food environments on diet and anthropometrics.

Children's Intake of Food from Non-Fast-Food Outlets and Child-Specific Menus: A Survey of Parents

Abstract:Eating out-of-home is associated with higher energy intakes in children. The continued high prevalence of childhood obesity requires a greater understanding of child menu options and eating out frequency to inform appropriate regulatory initiatives. The majority of studies to date have focused on menus from fast-food outlets with few focused on non-fast-food outlets. This study aimed to describe parents' reports of their child(ren)'s (aged up to 6 years) frequency of consuming foods at non-fast-food outlets, observations of child menus at these outlets, and their purchasing behaviours and future preferences regarding these menus; and if their responses were influenced by sociodemographic characteristics. Ninety-five parents completed a 15-item cross-sectional survey. Overall, children from 54% of families consumed food from non-fast-food outlets at least monthly. Of the 87 parents who reported that their child eats at a non-fast-food restaurant, 71 had children who ordered from child menus every time (7%, n = 5), often (29%, n = 22), sometimes (42%, n = 32) or rarely (16%, n = 12), with a further 7% (n = 5) never ordering from these menus. All parents indicated that they would like to see a higher proportion of healthy child menu items than is currently offered. Parents' responses were not influenced by sociodemographic characteristics. Parents' views support implementation of initiatives to increase availability of healthy options on child menus at non-fast-food outlets.
Examining child schooling/care location and child temperament as predictors of restaurant-related behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic: findings from a nationally representative survey

Abstract:Purpose: Emerging research highlights impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on U.S. families, including changes in eating behavior and increased child body mass index. Aims of the present study were to examine whether child temperament and at-home vs. out-of-home childcare/school predicted families' restaurant-related behaviors during the pandemic. Examining energy balance-related behaviors, like restaurant patronage, during the pandemic can help better understand lasting impacts on child health behaviors and health outcomes. Methods: An online survey was administered to U.S. parents with a 4-to-8-year-old child in October 2020 (n = 1,000). Linear and logistic regression examined whether child temperament and at home vs. out-of-home childcare/school predicted: (1) the frequency the child consumed restaurant meals (take-out, delivery, dine-in), (2) who chose the child's restaurant meal, and (3) parent-reported reasons for the child's meal choice. Income, education, employment, race/ethnicity, and regional COVID-19 restrictions were tested as covariates. Results: Parents with children higher on negative affectivity reported more frequent restaurant use in-person (p < 0.05) and via delivery (p < 0.05) compared to parents of children lower on negativity. Child negativity was also linked with parent-reported reasons for children's restaurant meal choices. Parents of children receiving at-home childcare/schooling used delivery services less frequently than those receiving out-of-home care or schooling (p < 0.01). Conclusion: These findings suggest that individual and family factors may impact restaurant use and the meal selection process for children using restaurants during and beyond the COVID-19 era. Continued examination of individual differences in the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic can facilitate intervention and policy approaches that fit with different families' needs.

Abstract:Several studies have been conducted to investigate nutrition labeling on menus and adult purchases. Only a few studies have examined menu labeling and children's meals, despite the increasing rate of childhood obesity. The overall aim of this study is to explore the effects of different menu labeling formats on purchases of children's meals and parent‐child decision‐making at a family‐oriented restaurant. The intervention consists of four children's menus featuring six bundled, nutritionally diverse, and equally priced combinations: Menu 1 ‐Control, unmodified menu; Menu 2 ‐ Nutrition labeling with calories and fat; Menu 3‐ Nutrition labeling with a “Healthy Choice Symbol;” and Menu 4 ‐ Nutrition labeling with price per health index. Measures include menu sales data and postcard surveys completed by parent‐child dyads while dining. Preliminary data show that the mean age of children is 5.6 and mostly female (62%). Parents reported that most meals were chosen based on child's preference (93%) and by the child (47%). Joint parent‐child decisions were made about one‐quarter of the time (24%). Chicken tenders and french fries were the most popular item (64%). Final sales and survey data will provide important insight into the potential impact of nutrition labeling at restaurants on children's purchases.
Frequency and socio-demographic correlates of eating meals out and take-away meals at home: cross-sectional analysis of the UK national diet and nutrition survey, waves 1-4 (2008-12)

Abstract:Background: Food prepared out-of-home tends to be less healthful than food prepared at home, with a positive association between frequency of consumption and both fat intake and body fatness. There is little current data on who eats out-of-home food. We explored frequency and socio-demographic correlates of eating meals out and take-away meals at home, using data from a large, UK, population representative study. Methods: Data were from waves 1-4 of the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2008-12). Socio-demographic variables of interest were gender, age group, and socio-economic position. Self-reported frequency of consuming meals out and take-away meals at home was categorised as: less than once per week and once per week or more. Analyses were performed separately for adults (aged 18 years or older) and children. Results: Data from 2001 adults and 1963 children were included. More than one quarter (27.1%) of adults and one fifth (19.0%) of children ate meals out once per week or more. One fifth of adults (21.1%) and children (21.0%) ate take-away meals at home once per week or more. There were no gender differences in consumption of meals out, but more boys than girls ate take-away meals at home at least weekly. The proportion of participants eating both meals out and take-away meals at home at least weekly peaked in young adults aged 19-29 years. Adults living in more affluent households were more likely to eat meals out at least once per week, but children living in less affluent households were more likely to eat take-away meals at home at least once per week. There was no relationship between socio-economic position and consumption of take-away meals at home in adults. Conclusions: One-fifth to one-quarter of individuals eat meals prepared out-of-home weekly. Interventions seeking to improve dietary intake by reducing consumption of out-of-home food may be more effective if tailored to and targeted at adults aged less than 30 years. It may also be important to develop interventions to help children and adolescents avoid becoming frequent consumers of out-of-home food.
Characterizing children’s eating patterns: does the choice of eating occasion definition matter?

Abstract:Abstract Background Recommendations to define eating occasions (EO) currently exist for research in adults, but not for children or adolescents. We examined how varying EO definitions affect the characterization of eating patterns in children and adolescents. Methods Cross-sectional dietary data collected using a 24-h recall data during the 2011–12 Australian National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (1364 boys and 1337 girls aged 2–18 years) were analyzed. Eight definitions were applied: participant-identified, time-of-day, and 6 neutral definitions (EO separated by 15- or 60-min and/or an additional energy criterion of 21 or 210 kJ). Frequency of and total energy intake from meals, snacks, and all EO were estimated. F tests stratified by gender and age-group, were used to assess differences between definitions. Agreement between definitions of meal and snack frequencies was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Linear regression was used to estimate the proportion of variance in total energy intake (kJ) and BMI z-score predicted by each definition. Results Mean frequencies of meals and snacks differed between the participant-identified and time-of-day definitions, in boys and girls and for all age groups ( P < 0.01). Across the six neutral definitions, there were differences between mean frequencies of EO with the largest mean difference observed for children aged 2–3 y (boys: 2.3, girls: 2.5; P < 0.003). Between the participant-identified and time-of-day definitions, there was good agreement for frequencies of snacks (ICC for both genders: 0.93) but not meals (boys: 0.36; girls: 0.38). The 15-min time interval plus 210 kJ definition of an EO consistently predicted the most variance in total energy intake (R 2 range = 8.1–34.8). Definitions that delineated meals and snacks better predicted variance in BMI z-score, when compared to the neutral definitions. Conclusions How eating patterns are characterized vary depending on the EO definitions employed, particularly in young children. Variance in total energy intake was best predicted by a variation of the neutral definition whereas definitions that delineated meals and snacks performed better in relation to predicting BMI variance. Further international research that compares EO definitions in children will help inform a standard approach.

Abstract:This study examined the cross-sectional relationship between caregivers' perceived competence and autonomy (as defined by the Self-Determination Theory) and their fast food or counter service restaurant food purchases (side dishes, beverage, and dessert) for their child. A U.S. national convenience sample of caregivers with at least one 3–12-year-old child completed an online survey with questions adapted from the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory that measured perceived competence and autonomy for feeding fruits and vegetables and limiting sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and desserts. The survey included four questions asking about their fast food or counter service restaurant food purchases (side dish, beverage, and dessert). We applied logistic and multinomial logistic regression models to examine the associations between competence or autonomy and restaurant orders. Competence and autonomy were associated with ordering fruits and vegetables as side dishes (OR [95% CI], 1.14 [1.06, 1.24] and 1.09 [1.03, 1.14], respectively). However, higher competence was also associated with ordering desserts at restaurants and higher autonomy was associated with lower odds of ordering water. These findings will inform interventions and programs that aim to support caregivers' psychological needs, like competence and autonomy, to promote supportive environments and healthier restaurant purchases for their children.

Self-determination theory and food-related parenting: The Parent Socioemotional Context of Feeding Questionnaire.

Abstract:There has been wide application of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to understanding motivation and regulation of eating and weight. Yet, there are no measures of the socioemotional-contextual family conditions in the eating domain, which are identified in SDT and should influence development of eating behavior in young children. Two studies were conducted to develop and validate a measure to assess the SDT socioemotional-contextual dimensions of food-related parenting. These dimensions were derived from extensions of SDT, which argue that autonomy support, warmth, and appropriate structure (as well as low coercion, hostility, and chaos) are the conditions that will fulfill children's psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence, resulting in more intrinsic motivation and better self-regulation of behavior. In the first study, 230 parents completed the food-related parenting items in reference to their 4- to 8-year-old children, and the factor structure and construct and convergent validity of the items were examined. Generally consistent with SDT, factors suggested 4 food-related socioemotional parenting contexts of supportiveness (autonomy support/warmth), coerciveness (coercion/hostility), structure, and chaos. In a second study of 221 parents, a 24-item Parent Socioemotional Context of Feeding Questionnaire (PSCFQ) was confirmed to have a 4-factor structure. In each study, good reliability was found for each subscale. Construct, convergent, and divergent validity were supported by small to moderate correlations with aspects of child feeding (e.g., restriction) and general parenting styles. Abstract:Feeding style refers to the approach that parents use to feed their child and the emotional climate during eating. Indulgent styles, characterized by low structure and high responsiveness, have been linked to childhood weight gain. Few studies have examined feeding styles within out-of-home contexts (e.g., restaurants), which are common eating environments for many families. This study sought to examine feeding styles at-home and in restaurants among African American parents. 52 African American parents with a 3-to-8-year-old child (M = 35.6 years, 86% mothers, 57% annual household income <$50,000, 57% Associate's degree or higher) who regularly dined at restaurants completed an online survey in winter 2022-2023. Parents reported on demographics, anthropometrics, and their feeding styles at home and in restaurants via The Caregiver's Feeding Style Questionnaire. Findings indicated that the indulgent style was the most common overall. Indulgent styles were more prevalent in restaurants (χ2 = 7.4, p = 0.007) than home, and authoritarian styles more prevalent at home (χ2 = 4.5, p = 0.03). Child weight status differed by feeding style in both contexts (p ≤ 0.04); indulgent styles in restaurants were linked to higher BMI z-scores, while authoritarian styles at home were linked to lower BMI z-scores. Higher parent BMI was linked to increased likelihood of having an indulgent style at home (OR = 1.13, p = 0.03), while lower parent BMI was linked to increased likelihood of the uninvolved style at home (OR = 0.76, p = 0.049). Overall, indulgent styles were common and more prevalent in restaurants, where they were linked to higher child weight status. Findings may inform future health promotion efforts in out-of-home eating contexts.

Abstract:Abstract Children’s eating habits are closely related to not only their own growth and development, but also their psychological development. In order to explore the influence of family status on the frequency of Western fast food eating for preschool children, this study selected five aspects of preschool education, including the cognitive level of adopters and family income, as the research dimension, and used SPSS software to analyze nearly 2000 groups of data. The study found that the low cognitive level of adopters in Western fast food behavior caused children to eat Western fast food more frequently. Children with high family income, decent parents, high educational level of parents and family living conditions had higher frequency of eating Western fast food. Finally, it is proposed to improve children’s dietary behavior by improving their dietary education, education ability and their own dietary behavior, developing diversified and interesting dietary health, health education activities, and strengthening the publicity of dietary education in kindergartens.
Family meals: perceptions of benefits and challenges among parents of 8- to 10-year-old children

Abstract:The study purpose was to examine parental perceptions of the mealtime environment in families with school-aged children and identify strategies to improve the dietary quality of meals. Cross-sectional surveys were completed by a convenience sample of 107 parents (86% mothers, 14% fathers) of 8- to 10-year-old children who were recruited from afterschool child care programs/elementary schools. SAS (version 9.1) was used to produce descriptive frequencies of parental reports of positive and negative perceptions of mealtime. Parents reported frequent family meals; however, they indicated that family dinners were eaten at full-service restaurants, purchased from fast-food establishments, or picked up as takeout foods at least weekly (47.0%, 28.3%, and 23.8%, respectively). Conflicts about food were problematic for some families (40.2% on at least some days), and appeared to be related to children's food pickiness. Parents reported many benefits of family meals, including time for conversation, feelings of togetherness, shared nutrition, and ceremony. Areas where parents desired change included assistance with meal planning, food preparation, and clean-up; spending more time at meals; assistance with children's food pickiness; new recipes and meal ideas; and decreasing conflict at mealtimes. Findings suggest that interventions to increase family meal frequency and promote healthful foods at mealtimes should address promoting food acceptance among children, sharing responsibilities among parents and children for meal planning and preparation, decreasing conflict at meals, and eating out healthfully.

Abstract:Excessive access to fast‐food restaurants (FFRs) in the neighbourhood is thought to be a risk factor for childhood obesity by discouraging healthful dietary behaviours while encouraging the exposure to unhealthful food venues and hence the compensatory intake of unhealthy food option. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for articles published until 1 January 2019 that analysed the association between access to FFRs and weight‐related behaviours and outcomes among children aged younger than 18. Sixteen cohort studies and 71 cross‐sectional studies conducted in 14 countries were identified. While higher FFR access was not associated with weight‐related behaviours (eg, dietary quality score and frequency of food consumption) in most studies, it was commonly associated with more fast‐food consumption. Despite that, insignificant results were observed for all meta‐analyses conducted by different measures of FFR access in the neighbourhood and weight‐related outcomes, although 17 of 39 studies reported positive associations when using overweight/obesity as the outcome. This systematic review and meta‐analysis revealed a rather mixed relationship between FFR access and weight‐related behaviours/outcomes among children and adolescents.
