Abstract:In this study, catechol-conjugated chitosan (CSS) was synthesized to prepare silver nanoparticles in aqueous solution as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. The entire reaction process complied with the principles of green chemistry. The stability and physicochemical properties of CSS-coated silver nanoparticles (CSS–Ag NPs) were well characterized by a series of techniques. A narrow diameter distribution and excellent stability were observed in the target CSS–Ag NPs. Determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the disk diffusion test were applied to evaluate the antibacterial activities with respect to quantity and quality, respectively. The cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells were also evaluated with a series of assays. The resulting CSS–Ag NPs combined the unique properties of chitosan and silver nanoparticles, showing effective antibacterial activities and low cytotoxicity. The effective toxic concentration of CSS–Ag NPs towards E. coli and S. aureus is too low to damage HepG2 cells. The results demonstrated that CSS–Ag NPs could be a potential candidate for use in biological and pharmaceutical areas to prevent infections caused by microorganisms.

Abstract:Introduction: The use of plant extracts in the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is one of the simplest, most practical, economical, and ecologically friendly methods for avoiding the use of toxic chemicals. Method: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized, employing a high-efficiency, non- toxic, cost-effective, green, and simple technique that included the use of Salacia oblonga root extract (SOR) as a capping agent compared to synthetic nanoparticles. The use of S. oblonga can be seen in traditional medicines for treating diabetes, obesity, rheumatism, gonorrhea, asthma, and hyperglycemia. The objectives of the current study were to green synthesize S. oblonga root extract silver nanoparticles (SOR-AgNPs), characterize them, and study their antioxidant, antibacterial, and antidiabetic activities. Result: The shape of SOR-AgNPs was spherical, at less than 99.8 nm in size, and exhibited a crystalline peak at XRD. The green synthesized SOR-AgNPs showed significant antioxidant properties like DPPH (80.64 μg/mL), reducing power capacity (81.09 ± SEM μg/mL), nitric oxide (96.58 μg/mL), and hydroxyl (58.38 μg/mL) radical scavenging activities. The MIC of SOR-AgNPs was lower in gram-positive bacteria. The SOR-AgNPs have displayed efficient inhibitory activity against α-amylase, with an EC50 of 58.38 μg/mL. Analysis of capping protein around the SOR-AgNPs showed a molecular weight of 30 kDa. Discussion: These SOR-AgNPs could be used as antibacterial and antidiabetic drugs in the future as it is cheap, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. Bio-fabricated AgNPs had a significant impact on bacterial strains and could be used as a starting point for future antibacterial drug development.

Abstract:Abstract Recent advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology have revolutionized the medical field, particularly in the treatment and prevention of disease. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are considered one of the best supreme and most important nanomaterials with a variety of compulsive nanomaterial having diverse array of multifunctional bioapplications. The current study focuses on the green biosynthesis of AgNPs using polysaccharides extracted from Olea europaea leaves. The synthesized AgNPs were thoroughly analyzed and characterized using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The absorption peak at 440 nm showed a high plasmon resonance band, confirming the formation of green AgNPs by the reduction of Ag + ions to Ag 0 . FTIR analysis showed the appearance and extension of different functional groups. The results of EDX and SEM confirmed the synthesis of AgNPs with spherical shape, crystalline structure, and an average size of 64.42 nm. The biosynthesized AgNPs possessed improved antimicrobial activities, indicating the importance of biosynthesized NPs in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the biosynthesized AgNPs were biocompatible and exhibited anti-inflammatory activity (86.29%), almost similar to that of a standard drug (87.78%) at a concentration of 500 μL/mL. The polysaccharides obtained from O. europaea could be considered as effective reducing agent, leading to an environmentally friendly synthesis of stable and biologically important AgNPs with a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Silver Oxide nanoparticles (AgONPs) have been revealed to have many applications, including antibacterial behavior. However, the conventional methods for synthesizing AgO NPs often use toxic chemicals that may be detrimental to human health and environmental factors. The crystalline structure and size of obtained AgO NPs were confirmed by Powder X-ray diffraction analysis with 35–70 nm. Functional groups have been identified in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The result of Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the elements in the synthesized AgO NPs. The energy band gap is determined using UV–visible spectroscopy. Morphological examination of prepared AgO NPs, comprising spherical and rod-like structures, was performed using a Transmission, and scanning electron microscope. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using Gram-negative ( Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli ) and Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus ) bacteria from Agar Well Diffusion Method. The results show that the green synthesis of AgO NPs have better antibacterial activity. The inhibition zone diameter were observedfor all microorganisms. The green synthesis of AgO NPs from herbal plant leaf extracts is a promising method for developing safe and effective antibacterial agents.

Abstract:The green synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles has gained a lot of interest in the area of nanotechnology, because of its high therapeutic properties. The present study focussed on the synthesis of the silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using Ceropegia debilis leaf extract and characterized by various physio-chemical techniques and surface morphological studies. The prepared Ag-NPs exhibit a face-centred cubic structure, spherical morphology, and high purity as shown by XRD, SEM, and EDS analyses. The average size of the Ag-NPs was confirmed by TEM study as 18.6 ± 7.5 nm. The synthesized Ag-NPs show remarkable antioxidant activity of 72.1% compared to standard BHT 86.9%. Furthermore, Ag-NPs show remarkable cytotoxic properties against MCF 7 and A 549 cell line of 37.19% and 33.33%, respectively at 250 μg/mL. The antibacterial activity of Ag-NPs was investigated against the human pathogen and intestinal pathogen Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by agar disc diffusion method. Moreover, the synthesised Ag-NPs exhibit good antifungal properties against the fungal specimen Trichoderma viride assessed by well diffusion technique. In addition, Ag-NPs serve as an excellent nanocatalyst in the removal of toxic methylene blue dye (93.2%) from industrial wastewater under sunlight irradiation.

Abstract:Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using natural compounds derived from plant kingdom is currently used as safe and low-cost technique for nanoparticles synthesis with important abilities to inhibit multidrug resistant microorganisms (MDR). ESKAPE pathogens, especially MDR ones, are widely spread in hospital and intensive care units. In the present study, AgNPs using Ducrosia flabellifolia aqueous extract were synthesized using a reduction method. The green synthesized D. flabellifolia-AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction assays. The tested D. flabellifolia aqueous extract was tested for its chemical composition using Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). Anti-quorum sensing and anti-ESKAPE potential of D. flabellifolia-AgNPs was also performed. Results from LC-ESI-MS technique revealed the identification of chlorogenic acid, protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and gallic acid as main phytoconstituents. Indeed, the characterization of newly synthetized D. flabellifolia-AgNPs revealed spherical shape with mean particle size about 16.961±2.914 nm. Bio-reduction of silver was confirmed by the maximum surface plasmon resonance of D. flabellifolia-AgNPs at 430 nm. Newly synthetized D. flabellifolia-AgNPs were found to possess important anti-ESKAPE activity with low minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 0.078 to 0.312 mg/mL, and low minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) varying from 0.312 to 0.625 mg/mL. Moreover, D. flabellifolia-AgNPs were active against Candida utilis ATCC 9255, C. tropicalis ATCC 1362, and C. albicans ATCC 20402 with high mean diameter of growth inhibition at 5 mg/mL, low MICs, and minimal fungicidal concentrations values (MFCs). The newly synthetized D. flabellifolia-AgNPs were able to inhibit violacein production in Chromobacterium violaceum, pyocyanin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa starter strains. Hence, the newly synthesized silver nanoparticles using D. flabellifolia aqueous extract can be used as an effective alternative to combat ESKAPE microorganisms. These silver nanoparticles can attenuate virulence of Gram-negative bacteria by interfering with the quorum sensing system and inhibiting cell-to-cell communication.

Abstract:Among the various types of nanoparticles and their strategy for synthesis, the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles has gained much attention in the biomedical, cellular imaging, cosmetics, drug delivery, food, and agrochemical industries due to their unique physicochemical and biological properties. The green synthesis strategies incorporate the use of plant extracts, living organisms, or biomolecules as bioreducing and biocapping agents, also known as bionanofactories for the synthesis of nanoparticles. The use of green chemistry is ecofriendly, biocompatible, nontoxic, and cost-effective. We shed light on the recent advances in green synthesis and physicochemical properties of green silver nanoparticles by considering the outcomes from recent studies applying SEM, TEM, AFM, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR, and XRD techniques. Furthermore, we cover the antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic activities of silver nanoparticles.

Abstract:Due to their enhanced and unique physicochemical characteristics, such as their minimal dimensions, large surface area compared to their mass and increased reactivity, nanomaterials hold promise in the field of antibacterial therapy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the method for Green Synthesis, Characterization of Citrus lanatus pulp, rind, and seed-based Silver Nanoparticles, and study its antibacterial activity against common oral microorganisms. Green synthesis of nanoparticles was formulated using the extract from the rind, seed, and pulp of Citrullus lanatus and silver nitrate extract. The extract was stirred in a magnetic stirrer for 24 hours, and centrifugation was done at 8000 rpm for 10 minutes. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized and utilized for the antibacterial study. The characterization was done using UV-visible light spectroscopy, and antibacterial activity was assessed using the well diffusion method and measuring the zone of inhibition. The nanoparticles synthesized were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, and the spectroscopic analysis confirmed the formation of silver particles in this study. At 450 nm, a sharp peak was observed, which correlated to the SPR band of the particles. The results showed that the zone of inhibition assessed was comparable to the standard. From this study it can be concluded that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) produced by green synthesis from Citrullus lanatus showed significant antibacterial potential against common oral microflora.

Abstract:In this study, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles, an aqueous Syzygium malaccense fruit extract, was employed as a reducing agent. UV–Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Elemental Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticle's surface plasmon resonance peak was measured at 438 nm. The absorption spectra of Syzygium malaccense fruit extract exhibit a blue shift with decreasing particle size as the concentration increases. The silver nanoparticles reveal it agglomerated spherical nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles inhibit both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The silver nanoparticles have higher catalytic activity of 94% at the end of 120 min. This natural silver nanoparticle synthesis technique makes a significant contribution to green synthesis and nanotechnology by eliminating the use of harmful and toxic solvents and trash.

Abstract:Green nanotechnology is currently a very crucial and indispensable technology for handling diverse problems regarding the living planet. The concoction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has opened new insights in cancer therapy. The current investigation caters to the concept of the involvement of a novel eco-friendly avenue to produce AgNPs employing the wild endolichenic fungus Talaromyces funiculosus. The synthesized Talaromyces funiculosus-AgNPs were evaluated with the aid of UV visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The synthesized Talaromyces funiculosus-AgNPs (TF-AgNPs) exhibited hemo-compatibility as evidenced by a hemolytic assay. Further, they were evaluated for their efficacy against foodborne pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Listeria innocua, and Micrococcus luteus and nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, and Bacillus subtilis bacterial strains. The synthesized TF-AgNPs displayed cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner against MDA-MB-231 breast carcinoma cells and eventually condensed the chromatin material observed through the Hoechst 33342 stain. Subsequent analysis using flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy provided the inference of a possible role of intracellular ROS (OH-, O-, H2O2, and O2-) radicals in the destruction of mitochondria, DNA machinery, the nucleus, and overall damage of the cellular machinery of breast cancerous cells. The combined effect of predation by the cyclopoid copepod Mesocyclops aspericornis and TF-AgNPS for the larval management of dengue vectors were provided. A promising larval control was evident after the conjunction of both predatory organisms and bio-fabricated nanoparticles. Thus, this study provides a novel, cost-effective, extracellular approach of TF-AgNPs production with hemo-compatible, antioxidant, and antimicrobial efficacy against both human and foodborne pathogens with cytotoxicity (dose dependent) towards MDA-MB-231 breast carcinoma.

Abstract:Background: The rise of infectious diseases especially due to drug-resistant microbes and free radicals has caused a serious threat to public health worldwide. Green synthesized nanomaterials (NMs) have emerged as promising candidates to minimize the damage due to these problems. Doping the bioactive and stable silver atom into the biocompatible CuO by capping the nanoparticles with phytochemicals from honey enhanced the biological activity. The present study aimed to synthesize Ag- CuO NCs using the honey solution for antimicrobial and antioxidant activity evaluation. Methods: The nanoparticles (NPs) and nanocomposites (NCs) were successfully synthesized using the honey solution and characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as XRD, UV-Vis, FTIR, and SEM. The role of the secondary metabolites in honey solution is to stabilize the fabricated NMs by capping. Results: The red shift observed with the addition of Ag dopant indicates the narrowing of the CuO band gap. FT-IR characterization confirmed the presence of various functional group bands in the synthesized NMs. The spectral band between 900–500 cm−1 displays the presence of metal-oxygen and metal-metal bonds, confirming the production of pure CuO NPs and Ag-CuO NCs. The fabricated CuO NPs and Ag-CuO NCs have crystalline structures with crystallite sizes of 14.14 and 17.40 nm respectively. SEM data showed that CuO NPs are spherical and Ag-CuO NCs have a mixture of spherical and cubic shapes. The NMs displayed concentration-dependent biological activities. Conclusion: The successful incorporation of silver into the crystal lattice of CuO integrated with the presence of secondary metabolites on the surface improved the potential. Hence, the prepared NMs may have pharmaceutical applications in the future with some modifications for the enhancement of their potential.

Abstract:Current methods for green synthesis of metal nanoparticles often require continuous harvesting of fresh bio-materials for every synthesis cycle. Practices and procedures that economize bio-materials need to be employed if green synthesis could become a sustainable and eco-friendly method for synthesizing metal nanoparticles. This study explores Chrysophyllum albidum peels (mostly regarded as waste) to prepare silver nanoparticles (Alb-AgNPs). The technique employed in the synthesis allows repeated use of the peels, thus, reducing the heavy dependence on bio-materials. The optical and structural properties of the Alb-AgNPs were studied with Scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometer and powder X-ray diffractometer. The antimicrobial properties of the Alb-AgNPs were studied with selected microorganisms namely; S. aureus, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, B. subtilis, S. mutans, P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, and Candida albicans. High inhibitory activity against the microorganisms were exhibited with MICs ranging from 15.62 to 1000 µg/mL. Again, the Alb-AgNPs showed the ability to enhance the efficacy of standard antimicrobial agents. The results of the combined interaction with standard antibacterial and antifungal agents ranged from synergistic to antagonistic effects against the tested microorganisms. In addition, the Alb-AgNPs could serve as a biofilm inhibitor with the highest percent inhibition of about 92% against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The results from this study thus provide access to the simple, sustainable, economic and eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles with efficient antimicrobial properties as drug candidates as a means of overcoming the prevailing antibiotic resistance menaces.

Abstract:The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their applications have attracted many researchers as the AgNPs are used effectively in targeting specific tissues and pathogenic microorganisms. The purpose of this study is to synthesize and characterize silver nanoparticles from fully expanded leaves of Eugenia roxburghii DC., as well as to test their effectiveness in inhibiting biofilm production. In this study, at 0.1 mM concentration of silver nitrate (AgNO3), stable AgNPs were synthesized and authenticated by monitoring the color change of the solution from yellow to brown, which was confirmed with spectrophotometric detection of optical density. The crystalline nature of these AgNPs was detected through an X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern. AgNPs were characterized through a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) to study the morphology and size of the nanoparticles (NPs). A new biological approach was undertaken through the Congo Red Agar (CRA) plate assay by using the synthesized AgNPs against biofilm production. The AgNPs effectively inhibit biofilm formation and the biofilm-producing bacterial colonies. This could be a significant achievement in contending with many dynamic pathogens.

Abstract:Plant fractions have a diversity of biomolecules that can be used to make complicated reactions for the bioactive fabrication of metal nanoparticles (NPs), in addition to being beneficial as antioxidant medications or dietary supplements. The current study shows that Urtica dioica (UD) and biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of UD have antibacterial and antioxidant properties against bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida) and Drosophila melanogaster (Oregon R+). According to their ability to scavenge free radicals, DPPH, ABTS, TFC, and TPC initially estimated the antioxidant potential of UD and UD AgNPs. The fabricated AgNPs were analyzed (UV‒Vis, FTIR, EDS, and SEM) to determine the functional groups (alcohol, carboxylic acids, phenol, proteins, and aldehydes) and to observe the shape (agglomerated crystalline and rod-shaped structure). The disc diffusion method was used to test the antimicrobial properties of synthesized Ag-NPs against E. coli and P. putida. For 24 to 120 h, newly enclosed flies and third instar larvae of Drosophila were treated with UD and UD AgNPs. After exposure, tests for biochemical effects (acetylcholinesterase inhibition and protein estimation assays), cytotoxicity (dye exclusion), and behavioral effects (jumping and climbing assays) were conducted. The results showed that nanoparticles were found to have potent antimicrobial activity against all microbial strains tested at various concentrations. In this regard, ethno-medicinal characteristics exhibit a similar impact in D. melanogaster, showing (p < 0.05) significantly decreased cellular toxicity (trypan blue dye), enhanced biochemical markers (AChE efficacy and proteotoxicity), and improved behavioral patterns in the organism treated with UD AgNPs, especially in comparison to UD extract. The results of this study may help in the utilization of specific plants as reliable sources of natural antioxidants that may have been beneficial in the synthesis of metallic NPs, which aids in the production of nanomedicine and other therapeutic applications.

Abstract:Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles makes use of plant constituents, like carbohydrates, fats, enzymes, flavonoids, terpenoids, polyphenols, and alkaloids, as reducing agents to synthesize silver nanoparticles. The present study for the first time utilized seed extract of Tectona grandis (teak) for reduction of 1 mM silver nitrate solution to silver nanoparticles. The method proved to be very simple, cost-efficient, and convenient. Synthesis of nanoparticles was confirmed by visual detection in which the colorless solution gets changed to a brown-colored solution. Further characterization was done by UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR analysis, SEM/EDS, FESEM, and TEM. Size of silver nanoparticles was found to be 10–30 nm approximately as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) revealed that nanoparticles contain silver in its pure form. Well diffusion method showed the antimicrobial effect of AgNPs on different microorganisms with the zone of inhibition of 16 mm for Staphylococcus aureus, 12 mm for Bacillus cereus, and 17 mm for E. coli when 50 μg of AgNPs was used. Minimum inhibitory concentration was found to be 5.2, 2.6, and 2.0 μg/ml for Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli respectively. Mode of action of antimicrobial activity of nanoparticles was investigated by determining leakage of reducing sugars and proteins, suggesting that AgNPs were able to destroy membrane permeability.

Abstract:The present study deals with the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using a chemically modified polysaccharide as a reducing and capping agent. Dextran succinate (Dex-Suc) was synthesized by succinylation of the dextran with succinic anhydride at 80 °C for 24 h under stirring and N2. The Dex-Suc was used as a reducing and capping agent for the synthesis of Ag NPs in the presence of sunlight with high UV index. The Ag NPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEM, and EDS techniques. The SEM data revealed the preparation of spherical Ag NPs having 50 nm size. The Ag NPs showed antimicrobial properties against different bacterial and fungal strains.
