Abstract:Titanium is widely used for dental implants because of its superior mechanical properties, low modulus, excellent corrosion resistance, and good biocompatibility. However, even when they are used in combination with a protective coating, such as hydroxyapatite (HA), titanium implants have been reported to have several disadvantages. These implants are unable to bond directly with the bone, and this impairs the anchorage of dental implants within the bone itself. In this study, a novel implant was obtained by implanting titanium implants into the epithelial mantle pearl sacs of a fresh water bivalve (Hyriopsis cumingii Lea), which has been used previously in a proof-of-concept study for the natural induction nacre coating. In vitro cell responses to the nacre-coated surface were evaluated by seeding MG-63 osteoblast-like cells onto the implant surfaces, and then assessing cell morphology, cell proliferation and markers of differentiation (alkaline phosphatase [ALP] activity and osteocalcin expression levels). Among all of the specimens tested, including multiple control surfaces, the nacre coatings had a stronger stimulatory on the MG-63 cells by altering cell morphology, and promoting proliferation and differentiation. These results indicate the bone-bonding capacities of nacreous coatings. However, further in vivo animal experiments are required to provide conclusive evidence for the bioactivity of nacreous coatings.
Osteogenesis of Rat Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Osteoblastic Cells on Strontium-Doped Nanohydroxyapatite-Coated Titanium Surfaces.

Abstract:PURPOSE:The aim of this study was to compare the promotion of osteogenesis in vitro on three types of titanium surfaces: a strontium-hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA)-coated surface, a nano-HA-coated surface, and an uncoated roughened surface.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Sr-HA and HA were placed on disks with a roughened titanium surface by electrochemical deposition. MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells and rat bone mesenchymal stem cells were cultured on the Sr-HA, HA-coated, and uncoated roughened disks, and cell adhesion, proliferation, viability, osteogenic differentiation, and formation of mineralized nodules were measured at various time points.RESULTS:The Sr-HA coating produced by a simple electrochemical deposition treatment evidently enhanced the attachment, spreading, alkaline phosphatase activity, and extracellular matrix calcium mineralization of mouse bone mesenchymal stem cells and MC3T3-E1 cells compared with an untreated roughened titanium surface and a nano-HA-coated surface.CONCLUSION:This study suggests that a Sr-doped nano-HA coating produced through electrochemical deposition improves the osteoconductivity of a microrough titanium surface.
Cell Response of Titanium Implant with a Roughened Surface Containing Titanium Hydride: an in Vitro Study

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of surface chemistry of a sandblasted and acid-etched implant (with and without titanium hydride [TiH2]) on cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation of preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1).Materials and Methods: Sandblasted and dual acid-etched titanium discs comprised the test group, whereas sandblasted, acid-etched, and heat-treated discs comprised the control group. Both groups discs were sent for surface characterization. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on these 2 groups' discs, and then cell attachment, cell proliferation, and cell differentiation were analyzed.Results: Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that the titanium discs in the 2 groups shared the same surface topography; however, x-ray diffraction examination showed that the TiH2 diffractions only appeared in the test group. Cell attachment and cell proliferation were much better in the test group than in the control group at all time points investigated (P < .05). The expressions of alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin were significantly higher in the test group than in the control group for both protein and transcription level at every time point (P < .05 or P < .01).Conclusions: These results suggested that surface chemistry played a significant role in cell response to the sandblasted and acid-etched surface and the presence of TiH2 might promote the attachment, proliferation, and differentiation of preosteoblasts. Enhanced initial adhesion of osteoblast-like cells on an anatase-structured titania surface formed by H2O2/HCl solution and heat treatment

Abstract:Objectives. This study aims to investigate the effects of anatase-structured titania surface on the response of osteoblast-like cells.Methods. Three kinds of titanium (Ti) disks were prepared: the polished Ti (PT), the roughened Ti (RT) formed by sandblasting and acid etching, and the anatase-coated roughened Ti (ART) formed on the RT via H2O2/HCl solution treatment followed by heating at 400 degrees C. The surface topography of Ti disks was observed under a scanning electron microscope. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on the Ti disks. Cell morphology was observed by fluorescence microscopy. Cell adhesion and proliferation were assessed by MTT testing. To evaluate the cell differentiation on RT and ART, the expressions of core-binding factor alpha, osterix, bone sialoprotein, collagen type I????, osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase-2 were measured by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.Results. The three kinds of Ti disks had distinct surface topographic characteristics. The cells on the ART more rapidly displayed well-defined stress fibers and numerous processes and pseudopodi than the cells on the PT and RT. At 1 and 3 h after culture, there were more cells adhering to the ART than to PT and RT. Cell proliferation did not differ between groups after 1-5 days of culture. In addition, ART generally enhanced the osteogenic gene expression in a time-dependent manner compared with RT.Significance. Anatase-structured titania promotes initial adhesion and spreading of osteoblast-like cells, but does not influence cell proliferation. Hindrance of osteoblast cell adhesion on titanium by surface nanostructuring

Abstract:The surfaces of Ti Grade 2 plates were covered with glancing angle deposited (GLAD) Ti nanorods, which were subsequently anodized. The anodization step had an impact on the morphology and composition of the Ti GLAD nanorods, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. Atomic force microscopy measurements have shown decreased roughness after the anodization of GLAD nanorod-covered Ti samples. This directly impacted the surface wettability, which changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic upon anodization, as contact angle measurements revealed. Furthermore, the coulometrically determined electrochemically active surface area of the Ti GLAD samples was 7 times larger than that of a polished Ti sample with the same projected area, used as a reference. The surfaces of the samples were electrochemically characterized and the corrosion properties were determined. Overall, the Ti GLAD samples immediately after deposition have presented superior corrosion resistance as compared to the polished Ti sample. The additionally anodized sample showed a stronger improvement compared to the non-anodized version. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were done to study the oxide properties further, and the data were fitted to the proposed electrical circuit models. Finally, the bioassessment with Saos-2 cells showed osseo-repellent properties for Ti GLAD samples.

Abstract:The surfaces of pure titanium casts were modified with plasma nitridation in NH3 environment.The impacts of surface modification conditions,including the pressure,sample temperature and nitridation time etc.,on the mechanical properties of the surfaces were studied.The microstructures and properties were characterized with X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and conventional mechanical probes.The results show that the plasma nitridation significantly improves the properties of the Ti casts,and changes its stoichiometry.For instance,the modified Ti casts have much higher wear resistance,surface hardness,and corrosion resistance against the artificial saliva.And its color changed into dark-golden;the TiN,Ti2N and α-Ti(N) phases were observed in its surfaces.
Fibroblasts and osteoblasts behavior after contact with different titanium surfaces used as implant abutment: An in vitro experimental study

Abstract:Background: The goal of this in vitro study was to compare three different surfaces: two types of implant surfaces commercially available ([a] smooth/machined and [b] acid-treated surface) versus (c) anodized surface. Discs were manufactured with commercially pure titanium (CP) grade IV, which were subsequently analyzed by scanning microscopy and fibroblastic and osteoblastic cell cultures. Methods: Ninety-nine discs (5 × 2 mm) were manufactured in titanium grade IV and received different surface treatments: (i) Mach group: machined; (ii) AA group: double acid etch; and (iii) AN group: anodizing treatment. Three discs from each group were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to obtain surface topography images and qualitatively analyzed by EDS. Balb/c 3T3 fibroblasts and pre-osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1 lineage) were used to investigate each group's biological response (n = 10/cellular type). The data were compared statistically using the ANOVA one-way test, considered as a statistically significant difference p < 0.05. Results: The AA group had numerous micropores with diameters between 5 and 10 μm, while nanopores between 1 and 5 nm were measured in the AN group. The EDX spectrum showed a high titanium concentration in all the analyzed samples. The contact angle and wetting tension were higher in the AA, whereas similar results were observed for the other groups. A lower result was observed for base width in the AA, which was higher in the other two groups. The AN showed the best values in the fibroblast cells, followed by Mach and AA; whereas, in the culture of the MC3T3 cells, the result was precisely the opposite (AA > Mach > AN). There was similar behavior for cell adhesion for the test groups (Mach and AN), with greater adhesion of Balb/c 3T3 fibroblasts compared to MC3T3 cells; in the AA group, there was greater adherence for MC3T3 cells compared to Balb/c 3T3 fibroblasts. Conclusions: The findings suggest that different surface characteristics can produce different biological responses, possibly cell-line dependent. These findings have important implications for the design of implantable medical devices, where the surface characteristics can significantly impact its biocompatibility.
Cold Atmospheric Plasma Improves the Colonization of Titanium with Primary Human Osteoblasts: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Several studies have shown that cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) treatment can favourably modify titanium surfaces to promote osteoblast colonization. The aim of this study was to investigate the initial attachment of primary human osteoblasts to plasma-treated titanium. Micro-structured titanium discs were treated with cold atmospheric plasma followed by the application of primary human osteoblasts. The microwave plasma source used in this study uses helium as a carrier gas and was developed at the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification in Leipzig, Germany. Primary human osteoblasts were analyzed by fluorescence and cell biological tests (alkaline phosphatase activity and cell proliferation using WST-1 assay). The tests were performed after 4, 12, and 24 h and showed statistically significant increased levels of cell activity after plasma treatment. The results of this study indicate that plasma treatment improves the initial attachment of primary human osteoblasts to titanium. For the first time, the positive effect of cold atmospheric plasma treatment of micro-structured titanium on the initial colonization with primary human osteoblasts has been demonstrated. Overall, this study demonstrates the excellent biocompatibility of micro-structured titanium. The results of this study support efforts to use cold atmospheric plasmas in implantology, both for preimplantation conditioning and for regeneration of lost attachment due to peri-implantitis.

Abstract:This study assessed the effects of titanium (Ti) surface modification with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) associated or not with Naringenin (NA) citrus flavonoid-coating on osteoblastic-like cells (Ob) metabolism. Ti discs were submitted to alkalinization by NaOH solution (5 M, 60 °C) for 24 h; then, the discs were impregnated or not with 100 μg/mL of NA and dried for 1 h at room temperature. The chemical composition, surface topography, and NA release were evaluated. For the biological assays, the discs were placed on 24-well cell culture plates and Ob (Saos-2; ATCC HTB-85) was seeded onto the discs. After different periods, cell adhesion and viability, alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), and mineralized nodules deposition (MND) were assessed. In addition, cells stimulated with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were submitted to matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 synthesis and ALP gene expression assessment. Since data presented normal distribution and homogeneity (Shapiro-Wilk; Levene), Student's t-test or one-way ANOVA/post-hoc tests were selected for data analysis (α = 0.05). Higher roughness was observed on Ti discs submitted to NaOH treatment, while the chemical and NA release evaluations indicated the successful adsorption of NA to alkali-treated Ti surface. Higher cell adhesion, cell viability (after 7 days of culture), ALP activity, and MND were observed on Ti NaOH coated with NA compared to the control group (Ti NaOH) (p < 0.05). Moreover, NA coating also promoted decreased MMP-2 synthesis and increased ALP gene expression in the presence of the inflammatory stimulus TNF-α (p < 0.05). The modification of Ti disks with NaOH associated with NA-coating enhanced bone cell metabolism, suggesting that this type of surface modification has a promising potential to accelerate bone repair and formation around dental implants.

Optimizing surface characteristics for cell adhesion and proliferation on titanium plasma spray coatings on polyetheretherketone

Abstract:Background: Titanium plasma spray coating on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a recent innovation to interbody spacer technology. The inherent hydrophobic properties of standard, uncoated PEEK implants can hamper cell attachment and bone healing during fusion. The addition of titanium coating not only offers initial stability due to increased surface roughness but also long-term stability due to bony ongrowth created from osteoconductive microenvironment on the device surface. The previously established hydrophilic and osteophilic properties of commercially pure titanium (CPTi) can potentially provide an ideal environment promoting cell attachment and bony ongrowth when applied at the end plate level of the fusion site. Because the surface material composition and topography is what seems to directly affect cell adhesion, it is important to determine the ideal titanium coating for the highest effectiveness. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to determine whether there is an optimal surface roughness for the titanium coatings and whether different polishing methods have a greater effect than roughness or topography in mediating cell adhesion to the surface. Study design/setting: The study was divided into two phases. In Phase 1, the effects of varying surface roughnesses on identical polishing method were compared. In Phase 2, the effect of varying polishing methods was compared on identical surface roughnesses. Methods: Coating thickness, porosity, and surface roughness were characterized using an optical microscope as per ASTM F 1854 standards. For both phases, PEEK coupons with plasma-sprayed CPTi were used, and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) at an initial density of 25,000 cells/cm2 were seeded and cultured for 24 hours before fixation in 10% formalin. The cultured hMSCs were visualized by 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, a fluorescent stain that binds to the DNA of living cells. Samples were imaged using an environmental scanning electron microscope (eSEM) (Carl Zeiss Microscopy, Thornwood, NY, USA) using a backscattered detector. Results: Image analysis of the CPTi coatings showed uniform and rough surfaces. For Phase 1, roughness was evaluated as fine, medium, and coarse. The eSEM image analysis and cell counting by DAPI demonstrated that hMSCs have a tendency to form stronger adhesion and greater pseudopodia extensions on fine roughness surfaces. Individual hMSCs were seen forming cytoplasmic processes extending across the width of a pore. There was a 4- and 20-fold reduction in adhered hMSCs with an increase to medium and coarse roughnesses, respectively. For Phase 2, studied groups are (1) medium CPTi coating with zirconia polishing, (2) medium CPTi coating with CPTi polishing, and (3) fine CPTi coating with CPTi polishing. The eSEM image analysis and cell counting by DAPI demonstrated that hMSCs have a tendency to form stronger adhesion and greater pseudopodia extensions on Group 3 over the other two groups. There was a twofold reduction in adhered hMSCs on medium roughness relative to fine. No difference in cell adhesion was found between Groups 1 and 2. Individual hMSCs were seen forming cytoplasmic processes extending across the width of a pore. Conclusions: Previously, it was accepted without much scrutiny that surface coatings were beneficial. This study begins to discover that surface topography directly affects the potential for cells to adhere and proliferate and lead to greater surgical efficacy.
Enhanced Initial Proliferation and Differentiation of MC3T3-E1 Cells on HF/HNO3 Solution Treated Nanostructural Titanium Surface.

Abstract:Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nano- or submicro topography and fluoride ion on the biology of osteoblasts.Study design. Pure Ti plates were sandblasted, etched with an HCl/H2SO4 solution (control surface) and then etched in a diluted HF/HNO3 solution (test surface). MC3T3-E1 cells attached, spread, and proliferated on both surfaces.Results. The alkaline phosphatase activity was evidently higher for the test surface than for control surface after 4 and 7 days of cell culture. Real-time PCR showed significant increases in type I collagen and osteocalcin gene expression in osteoblast growth on the test surface after 4 days of culture compared with the control surface.Conclusion. With nanotopography and fluoride, hydrogen ions might improve MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation and differentiation during the early stages of cell culture. Influence of micro and nanoporous TiO 2 surface modifications on physical-chemical and biological interactions

Abstract:Titanium is widely used in implants but can cause adverse reactions like inflammation and tissue rejection. Surface modifications like acid-etching and anodization improve implant properties and osseointegration. This study investigated how micro and nanoporous TiO 2 films affect the implant-host interaction, focusing on physical–chemical and biological aspects. Surface treated implants were obtained by acid-etched and anodization of commercially pure titanium (CPTi). Samples were characterized by FE- and FIB-SEM, XRD, EDX, WCA, profilometry, and electrochemical behavior was also investigated. Biocompatibility was accessed by protein adsorption (albumin and serum proteins), hemolysis, and in vitro fibroblast interaction. Anodic samples exhibited the highest corrosion resistance and apatite deposition. Protein adsorption was related to surface roughness and wettability. Samples followed the Langmuir model isotherm (Type I), except for galvanostatic samples (Type III isotherm). Kinetic adsorption was modeled by a pseudo-first-order model, wherein rate-limiting step is albumin diffusion into pores. All surfaces met the hemocompatibility requirements for its use as biomaterial (hemolysis index < 2 %). The upper surface roughness threshold was identified at approximately Sa ≈ 1 μm for better fibroblast viability, adhesion, and proliferation. Combining the results, nanoporous samples present optimized surface conditions that enhance body-fluid contact and improve cell adhesion, thereby contributing to long-term stability.

Abstract:Most medical implants are made of titanium. When titanium is exposed to air for a long time, hydrocarbons are deposited and the surface becomes hydrophobic. Cell attachment is important for bone ingrowth to occur on the implant surface, and hydrophilicity can enhance this. We examined whether non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma treatment could increase the hydrophilicity of the titanium surface. Samples coated with four widely used coating types [grit blasting, micro arc oxidation (MAO), titanium plasma spray (TPS), and direct metal fabrication (DMF)] were treated with plasma. Each of the four surface-treated samples was divided into groups with and without plasma treatment. We analysed wettability by surface analysis and evaluation of contact angles, cell proliferation, and adhesion using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy, absorbance tests, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay; four different Ti6Al4V surface types were compared. After plasma treatment, the contact angle was reduced on all surfaces, and the carbon content was reduced on all surfaces based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface analysis. Under confocal laser scanning, the cell layer was thicker on the plasma-treated samples, especially in groups TPS and DMF. Cell proliferation was 41.8%, 17.7%, 54.9%, and 83.8% greater for the plasma- than non-plasma-treated grit blasting, MAO, TPS, and DMF samples, respectively. Hydrophilicity increased significantly under plasma treatment, and biological responsivity was also improved.

Surface morphology and structure of titanium alloy play an important role in cell adhesion and proliferation. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the biocompatibility and osteogenesis performance of Ti6Al4V modified using ultrasonic surface rolling processing (USRP) and plasma nitriding (PN). The raw materials were nominated as untreated, and the Ti6Al4V samples treated by USRP (with a processing duration of 1 h and 3 h) and PN were named as USRP1, USRP2, USRP1 + PN, and USRP2 + PN, respectively. The Ti6Al4V samples were characterized by SEM, AFM, and surface profilometer for surface morphology and 3D surface topography, and USRP1 + PN showed the highest surface roughness (268 nm). The water contact angle measurements demonstrated that USRP2 had more favorite wettability (75.7 degrees). The XRD analysis indicated the enhancement of nanocrystallization for the samples treated by USRP and the formation of a nitride layer for the samples treated by USRP and PN. The interactions between the Ti6Al4V samples and MC3T3-E1 cells were investigated in vitro by SEM, CCK-8 test, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, and Alizarin Red S staining. The SEM images and CCK-8 tests revealed that all the Ti6Al4V samples were biocompatible to MC3T3-E1 cells, and the results of ALP activity assay and Alizarin Red S staining showed a better osteogenesis performance for the samples treated by USRP and PN. The present study indicates that USRP and PN may act as an effective method for Ti6Al4V to induce bone regeneration.
Surface Bioactivity Modification of Titanium by CO2 Plasma Treatment and Induction of Hydroxyapatite: in Vitro and in Vivo Studies

Abstract:Since metallic biomaterials used for orthopedic and dental implants possess a paucity of reactive functional groups, bioactivity modification of these materials is challenging. In the present work, the titanium discs and rods were treated with carbon dioxide plasma and then incubated in a modified simulated body fluid 1.5SBF to obtain a hydroxyapatite layer. Surface hydrophilicity of samples, changes of surface chemistry, surface morphologies of samples, and structural analysis of formed hydroxyapatite were investigated by contact angle to water, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrated that hydrophilicity of titanium surface was improved and hydroxyl groups increased after modification with carbon dioxide plasma treatment. The hydroxyl groups on the surface of titanium were the richest after carbon dioxide plasma treatment under the condition of 20W for less than 30s. The hydroxyapatite formability of titanium surface was enhanced by carbon dioxide plasma pretreatment, which was attributed to the surface chemistry. MC3T3-E1 cell as a model cell was cultured on the Ti, CPT-Ti and CPT/SBF-Ti discs in vitro, and the results of the morphology and differentiation of the cell showed that CPT/SBF-Ti was the highest bioactive. The relative parameters of the new bone around the Ti and CPT/SBF-Ti rods including bone mineral density (BMD), a ratio of bone volume to total volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th.) and trabecular number (Tb.N.) were analyzed by a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) after 4-, 8- and 12-week implantation periods in vivo. The results indicated that the CPT/SBF-Ti was more advantageous for new bone formation.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) surface modification via coating technologies (plasma spraying, electron-beam deposition) has been used to enhance bone-implant bonding by increasing the rate of hydroxyapatite (HA) formation, a property known as bioactivity. Regardless the enhancement in the surface activity, the high fabrication-temperature (> 600 °C) reduces coating-implant adhesion due to thermal expansion mismatch and reduces bioactivity due to increased crystallinity in the coating. Thus, amorphous surface coatings with strong Ti-substrate adhesion that can be fabricated at relatively low temperatures are crucially needed for enhanced osseointegration. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance the Ti surface bioactivity via strongly adherent bioactive thin film coatings deposited by low temperature (< 400 °C) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique on nanopore anodized-Ti (A-Ti) surface. Two groups of coating (silicon oxynitride (SiON) and silicon oxynitrophosphide (SiONP)) were deposited on anodized Ti and tested for interfacial adhesion and surface bioactivity. TEM and XPS were used to investigate the interfacial composition while interfacial adhesion was tested using nano-indentation tests which indicated a strong interfacial adhesion between the coatings and the A-Ti substrate. Surface bioactivity of the modified Ti was tested by comprehensive surface characterization (i.e., chemical composition, surface energy, morphology, and mechanical properties) and apatite formation on each surface. SiONP coating significantly enhanced the Ti surface bioactivity that presented the highest surface coverage of carbonated hydroxyapatite (HCA, ~ 40%) with a Ca/P ratio (~ 1.65) close to the stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (~ 1.67) found in bone biomineral. The HCA structure and morphology were confirmed by HR-TEM/SAED, XRD, FT-IR, and HR-SEM/EDX. MSCs <i>in-vitro</i> studies indicated preferable cells adhesion and proliferation on the modified surfaces without any cytotoxic effects. This study concluded that the improved surface bioactivity of Ti-SiON and Ti-SiONP coatings suggests their potential use as strongly adherent bioactive surface coatings for Ti implants.

Abstract:Growth of bony tissues on titanium biomedical implants can be time-consuming, thereby prolonging recovery and hospitalization after surgery and a method to improve and expedite tissue-implant integration and healing is thus of scientific and clinical interests. In this work, nitrogen and carbon plasma immersion ion implantation (N-PIII and C-PIII) is conducted to modify Ti-6Al-4V to produce a graded surface layer composed of TiN and TiC, respectively. Both PIII processes do not significantly alter the surface hydrophilicity but increase the surface roughness and corrosion resistance. In vitro studies disclose improved cell adhesion and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts and L929 fibroblasts after PIII. Micro-CT evaluation conducted 1 to 12 weeks after surgery reveals larger average bone volumes and less bone resorption on the N-PIII and C-PIII titanium alloy pins than the unimplanted one at every time point. The enhancements observed from both the in vitro and in vivo studies can be attributed to the good cytocompatibility, roughness, and corrosion resistance of the TiN and TiC structures which stimulate the response of preosteoblasts and fibroblasts and induce early bone formation. Comparing the two PIII processes, N-PIII is more effective and our results suggest a simple and practical means to improve the surface biocompatibility of medical-grade titanium alloy implants.
An Experimental Anodized and Low-Pressure Oxygen Plasma-Treated Titanium Dental Implant Surface—Preliminary Report

Abstract:Chemical composition and physical parameters of the implant surface, such as roughness, regulate the cellular response leading to implant bone osseointegration. Possible implant surface modifications include anodization or the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment process that produces a thick and dense oxide coating superior to normal anodic oxidation. Experimental modifications with Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) titanium and titanium alloy Ti6Al4V plates and PEO additionally treated with low-pressure oxygen plasma (PEO-S) were used in this study to evaluate their physical and chemical properties. Cytotoxicity of experimental titanium samples as well as cell adhesion to their surface were assessed using normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) or L929 cell line. Moreover, the surface roughness, fractal dimension analysis, and texture analysis were calculated. Samples after surface treatment have substantially improved properties compared to the reference SLA (sandblasted and acid-etched) surface. The surface roughness (Sa) was 0.59–2.38 µm, and none of the tested surfaces had cytotoxic effect on NHDF and L929 cell lines. A greater cell growth of NHDF was observed on the tested PEO and PEO-S samples compared to reference SLA sample titanium.
