Abstract:Globalization and information and communication technology (ICT) continue to change us and the world we live in. Nursing stands at an opportunity intersection where challenging global health issues, an international workforce shortage, and massive growth of ICT combine to create a very unique space for nursing leadership and nursing intervention. Learning from prior successes in the field can assist nurse leaders in planning and advancing strategies for global health using ICT. Attention to lessons learned will assist in combating the technological apartheid that is already present in many areas of the globe and will highlight opportunities for innovative applications in health. ICT has opened new channels of communication, creating the beginnings of a global information society that will facilitate access to isolated areas where health needs are extreme and where nursing can contribute significantly to the achievement of "Health for All." The purpose of this article is to discuss the relationships between globalization, health, and ICT, and to illuminate opportunities for nursing in this flattening and increasingly interconnected world.
Impact of Information and Communication Technologies on Nursing Care: Results of an Overview of Systematic Reviews

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are becoming an impetus for quality health care delivery by nurses. The use of ICTs by nurses can impact their practice, modifying the ways in which they plan, provide, document, and review clinical care.OBJECTIVE: An overview of systematic reviews was conducted to develop a broad picture of the dimensions and indicators of nursing care that have the potential to be influenced by the use of ICTs.METHODS: Quantitative, mixed-method, and qualitative reviews that aimed to evaluate the influence of four eHealth domains (eg, management, computerized decision support systems [CDSSs], communication, and information systems) on nursing care were included. We used the nursing care performance framework (NCPF) as an extraction grid and analytical tool. This model illustrates how the interplay between nursing resources and the nursing services can produce changes in patient conditions. The primary outcomes included nurses' practice environment, nursing processes, professional satisfaction, and nursing-sensitive outcomes. The secondary outcomes included satisfaction or dissatisfaction with ICTs according to nurses' and patients' perspectives. Reviews published in English, French, or Spanish from January 1, 1995 to January 15, 2015, were considered.RESULTS: A total of 5515 titles or abstracts were assessed for eligibility and full-text papers of 72 articles were retrieved for detailed evaluation. It was found that 22 reviews published between 2002 and 2015 met the eligibility criteria. Many nursing care themes (ie, indicators) were influenced by the use of ICTs, including time management; time spent on patient care; documentation time; information quality and access; quality of documentation; knowledge updating and utilization; nurse autonomy; intra and interprofessional collaboration; nurses' competencies and skills; nurse-patient relationship; assessment, care planning, and evaluation; teaching of patients and families; communication and care coordination; perspectives of the quality of care provided; nurses and patients satisfaction or dissatisfaction with ICTs; patient comfort and quality of life related to care; empowerment; and functional status.CONCLUSIONS: The findings led to the identification of 19 indicators related to nursing care that are impacted by the use of ICTs. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first attempt to apply NCPF in the ICTs' context. How nursing leadership and management interventions could facilitate the effective use of ICT by student nurses

Abstract:Aim: This article makes the case for how evidence-based nursing leadership and management activities could promote, implement and sustain quality patient care by student nurses using Information and Communications Technology. It is on aspects of the findings of a professional doctorate inquiry into Information and Communications Technology use and skills development by student nurses. Background: The 21st century is both an information and knowledge age. Nursing and medical professions are facing the increasing usage of information technology in day-to-day operations with the overall aim of improving the quality of patient care. The quality of the future of the nursing profession is dependent on the calibre of those who are currently socialized to become professional nurses. The new United Kingdom Labour Government, in power since 1997, has placed increasing focus on the effectiveness of the National Health Service and using computers as one way to assist in achieving greater effectiveness. This has implications for nurse education and the future preparation of future nurses to acquire skills in Information and Communications Technology. Method: This is a case study approach using multiple triangulation methodology. This includes: semi-structured interview of six student nurses and four of their mentors; one unstructured meeting with the Research and Development Manager; observational visit to a medical admission ward and a renal unit; one semi-structured meeting with the Information Manager; Review of Documentation - the National Health Service Trust Nursing Strategy; and Review, Application and Development of relevant theory. Findings: The overall findings are that student nurses are not using Information and Communications Technology in nursing practice in a structured and systematic way. The reasons for this are very many and very complex but are interrelated. They include strategic resource-based issues, what Jumaa referred to as Time, Human, Equipment, Information, Material and Money resources. These reasons include lack of time for Information and Communications Technology activities by both students and the qualified nurses and some staff with poor Information and Communications Technology skills. This situation is compounded by insufficient computer hardware; lack of information about the essence and value of Information and Communications Technology; perception of the direct relevance of Information and Communications Technology activities to patient care; software materials not adequate for purpose and lack of comprehensive budget and financial recognition for student's engagement with Information and Communications Technology. Conclusion: 'Smile and the whole world smile with you'. This old saying has a lot of truth in it. Applied to Information and Communications Technology skills development and use by student nurses we are confronted with an uncomfortable reality of many qualified nurses who themselves are not comfortable or proficient with the use of Information and Communications Technology. Some do not see the essential need for Information and Communications Technology and its direct relevance to improving patient care, nor is this always supported by the current software and systems. Willmer argued that the achievement of effective implementation of the National Health Service National Programme for Information and Technology requires efficient change management and leading people skills, and an understanding of National Health Service culture. In this article the case is made that evidence-based management and leadership interventions are a feasible approach for a sustained implementation of Information and Communications Technology use and skills development by student nurses.

This article underscores how these technologies have enhanced the efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility of clinical information, contributing to improved patient care. ICT revolution has revitalized nursing care and patient management, improving the quality of care and patient satisfaction. [Exploration of Smart Healthcare in the Context of Nurse Professionals in Developing Countries]

Abstract:In line with information and communication technology (ICT) trends, nursing practice and its preparations are expected to change fundamentally over the coming decade. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), issued by the United Nations, identify nurses as playing a significant role in achieving these goals and as using new technologies that will likely change how they deliver care to patients. Particularly for nursing care in developing countries, it is essential to emphasize the increased use and interoperability of electronic health records (EHR), mobile devices, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence. Four case studies, including the Malawi HIV system, community-based mobile APP in South Africa, the cloud base hospital information system (HIS) project in Marshall island, and smart hemodialysis in Vietnam, are examined in this article. In the near future, both information technology skills and interaction will have a significant impact on the nursing profession.

Abstract:Aim To examine the need for information and communication technology (ICT)‐based nursing care in improving patient management during the pandemic. Background Maintaining traditional approaches to nursing in the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) pandemic predisposes healthcare systems to a risk of diminished quality of care. Using ICT (real‐time videoconferencing, mobile robots, and artificial intelligence) could reduce burnout and infection risks by minimizing face‐to‐face contact. Method Qualitative descriptive design with content analysis. Results Overall, 24 participants (14 nurses, six medical/nursing informatics experts, and four technology experts) were interviewed. Three main themes were extracted: Emerging challenges for nurses due to COVID‐19, impact of new technology on patient and nurse experiences, and concerns with implementation of technology. Conclusion A significant portion of nurses' work was unrelated to professional nursing, causing burnout. ICT could help reduce nurses' burden by facilitating environmental management, non‐contact communication, and providing emotional support for patients. Implications for Nursing Management Establishing an ICT‐based nursing care system that considers the physical environment and communication infrastructure of healthcare institutions, user's digital health literacy, and user safety to effectively manage non‐nursing care‐related activities and undertake tasks that can be delegated may improve the quality of care for quarantined patients and reduce risk of cross‐infection.

Abstract:AIMS: Digital health technologies are designed, implemented, and evaluated to support clinical practice, enable patients to self-manage illness, and further public and global health. Nursing and health policies often emphasise the importance of evidence-based digital health services to deliver better care. However, the contribution nurses make to digital health research in many countries is unknown. Hence, this study aims to examine digital health research conducted by nurses in England.DESIGN: A bibliometric analysis.METHODS: The CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases were searched between 2000 and 2022, and supplemented with a hand search of nurses' research profiles. Results were screened by title, abstract, and full text against eligibility criteria. Data were extracted and bibliometric analysis used to summarise the findings.RESULTS: Mental health nurses produced the most digital health research in England, followed by nurses working in community care, with several disciplines underrepresented or missing. Web/online health services or information was the most researched technology, followed by mobile health and telehealth. Nurses based in the south-east and north-west of England produced the most digital health research, with other regions less well represented.CONCLUSION: Nurse leaders should support nurses to conduct more digital health research by providing dedicated time, funding, and professional development opportunities, particularly in under researched clinical areas, technologies, and geographic regions to further evidence-based practice and patient care. More digital nursing data is needed to support nurse led research in areas like artificial intelligence and data science. The findings supported the national Philips Ives Review by identifying areas of digital nursing research that need more investment in England.

[Current Status and Prospects for Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Allied Health Education]

Abstract:In this article, technologies that have been widely adopted and used in the field of allied health education in recent years are identified and introduced. These technologies may be distinguished based on education content and approach into the following three categories: online-offline digital education, which uses massive open online courses, CD-ROM, and similar learning tools; mobile learning, which uses mobile phones, tablets, and other devices to connect to the Internet of things; and digital simulation education, which uses virtual reality, virtual patient simulation, serious gaming, and gamification. Preliminary positive findings regarding the effectiveness of using the above technologies have been reported in the literature. Therefore, to better understand the impact of new technology, it is recommended that relevant medical/nursing educators should continue introducing practical courses to evaluate their impact on learning. However, funding limitations and the declining birthrate / population aging are two key threats to education that remain to be effectively addressed and overcome.

Currently, there is a push to adopt newer technologies to enhance practice. This article aims to highlight some of the innovative ways in which ICT have been adopted and adapted to augment social work practice. The need for social workers to become proficient in the use of newer technologies, opportunities for implementing ICT within a health care setting, and potential challenges at the professional, ethical, and systemic level are explored. Using the available literature as a guide, recommendations and strategies to strengthen implementation of ICTs into health social work are provided.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To examine primary research articles published between January 2001 and December 2012 that focused on the issues for students and educators involved with E-learning in preregistration nursing programs. The literature was systematically reviewed, critically appraised and thematically analyzed.BACKGROUND: E-learning is arguably the most significant change to occur in nursing education since the move from hospital training to the tertiary sector. Differences in computer and information literacy for both students and educators influence the success of implementation of E-learning into current curricula.DATA SOURCES: Online databases including CINAHL, MEDLINE, OVID, the ProQuest Central, PubMed, ERIC and Science Direct were used.METHODS: The criteria used for selecting studies reviewed were: primary focus on electronic learning and issues faced by nursing students and/or nurse educators from undergraduate preregistration nursing programs; all articles had to be primary research studies, published in English in peer reviewed journals between January 2001 and December 2012.RESULTS: Analysis of the 28 reviewed studies revealed the following three themes: issues relating to E-learning for students; use of information technologies; educator (faculty) issues involving pedagogy, workload and staff development in E-learning and associated technology.CONCLUSION: The review highlighted that commencing preregistration nursing students required ongoing education and support surrounding nursing informatics. This support would enable students to progress and be equipped with the life-long learning skills required to provide safe evidence based care. The review also identified the increased time and skill demands placed on nurse educators to adapt their current education methodologies and teaching strategies to incorporate E-learning.

Abstract:Purpose Taking a business lens of telehealth, this article aims to review and provide a state-of-the-art overview of telehealth research. Design/methodology/approach This research conducts a systematic literature review using the scientific procedures and rationales for systematic literature reviews (SPAR-4-SLR) protocol and a collection of bibliometric analytical techniques (i.e. performance analysis, keyword co-occurrence, keyword clustering and content analysis). Findings Using performance analysis, this article unpacks the publication trend and the top contributing journals, authors, institutions and regions of telehealth research. Using keyword co-occurrence and keyword clustering, this article reveals 10 major themes underpinning the intellectual structure of telehealth research: design and development of personal health record systems, health information technology (HIT) for public health management, perceived service quality among mobile health (m-health) users, paradoxes of virtual care versus in-person visits, Internet of things (IoT) in healthcare, guidelines for e-health practices and services, telemonitoring of life-threatening diseases, change management strategy for telehealth adoption, knowledge management of innovations in telehealth and technology management of telemedicine services. The article proposes directions for future research that can enrich our understanding of telehealth services. Originality/value This article offers a seminal state-of-the-art overview of the performance and intellectual structure of telehealth research from a business perspective.

Abstract:There is a need to ensure that healthcare organisations enable their workforces to use digital methods in service delivery. This study aimed to evaluate the current level of digital understanding and ability in nursing, midwifery, and allied health workforces and identify some of the training requirements to improve digital literacy in these health professionals. Representatives from eight healthcare organizations in Victoria, Australia participated in focus groups. Three digital frameworks informed the focus group topic guide that sought to examine the barriers and enablers to adopting digital healthcare along with training requirements to improve digital literacy. Twenty-three participants self-rated digital knowledge and skills using Likert scales and attended the focus groups. Mid-range scores were given for digital ability in nursing, midwifery, and allied health professionals. Focus group participants expressed concern over the gap between their organizations' adoption of digital methods relative to their digital ability, and there were concerns about cyber security. Participants also saw a need for the inclusion of consumers in digital design. Given the widening gap between digital innovation and health workforce digital capability, there is a need to accelerate digital literacy by rapidly deploying education and training and policies and procedures for digital service delivery.

Abstract:Background It is predicted that digital health technologies that incorporate artificial intelligence will transform health care delivery in the next decade. Little research has explored how emerging trends in artificial intelligence–driven digital health technologies may influence the relationship between nurses and patients. Objective The purpose of this scoping review is to summarize the findings from 4 research questions regarding emerging trends in artificial intelligence–driven digital health technologies and their influence on nursing practice across the 5 domains outlined by the Canadian Nurses Association framework: administration, clinical care, education, policy, and research. Specifically, this scoping review will examine how emerging trends will transform the roles and functions of nurses over the next 10 years and beyond. Methods Using an established scoping review methodology, MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central, Education Resources Information Centre, Scopus, Web of Science, and Proquest databases were searched. In addition to the electronic database searches, a targeted website search will be performed to access relevant grey literature. Abstracts and full-text studies will be independently screened by 2 reviewers using prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Included literature will focus on nursing and digital health technologies that incorporate artificial intelligence. Data will be charted using a structured form and narratively summarized. Results Electronic database searches have retrieved 10,318 results. The scoping review and subsequent briefing paper will be completed by the fall of 2020. Conclusions A symposium will be held to share insights gained from this scoping review with key thought leaders and a cross section of stakeholders from administration, clinical care, education, policy, and research as well as patient advocates. The symposium will provide a forum to explore opportunities for action to advance the future of nursing in a technological world and, more specifically, nurses’ delivery of compassionate care in the age of artificial intelligence. Abstract:The pace of technological evolution in healthcare is advancing. In this article key technology trends are identified that are likely to influence nursing practice and education over the next decade. The complexity of curricular revision can create challenges in the face of rapid practice change. Nurse educators are encouraged to consider the role of electronic health records (EHRs), wearable technologies, big data and data analytics, and increased patient engagement as key areas for curriculum development. Student nurses, and those already in practice, should be offered ongoing educational opportunities to enhance a wide spectrum of professional informatics skills. The nurses of 2025 will most certainly inhabit a very different practice environment than what exists today and technology will be key in this transformation. Nurse educators must prepare now to lead these practitioners into the future.

DIGITALIZATION AND ORGANIZATION OF CARE: THE CASE OF ONCOLOGY

Abstract:ecently, many industries have seen disruptive changes due to the rapid progress in information and communication technology (ICT). This systematic literature review aimed to develop an initial understanding of what is known about new ICT in medicine and its disruptive potential. Since medicine is organized into subsectors, we focused on oncology. Medline and Google Scholar were searched for relevant literature. We also hand-searched relevant journals not included in these databases. Retrieved articles were categorized and analyzed according to content evaluation methods. Articles from 2008 to 2021 in German and English were considered. 3,848 manuscripts were identified; after the application of inclusion/exclusion criteria, 30 articles were included in the analyses. The majority of articles (26) used a non-experimental design or detailed expert opinion. We found 10 major categories articles dealt with, ranging from the future role of physicians and the patient’s role to the purpose of ICT usage. Authors commented on many important topics that could change the organization of care massively; in almost all articles, there is significant disagreement about likely future development. ICT is becoming increasingly important in oncology and may impact both patients’ lives and professional conduct. When looking into ICT, doctors have focused on new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures but rarely on their disruptive potential. We recommend healthcare professionals to put more effort into the investigation of whether ICT changes the way oncology is performed and who is in control of this process, and to engage in shaping the future of oncology.

Abstract:The impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on medicine is unprecedented and ever-increasing. This has made it more and more difficult for doctors to keep pace with ICT developments and to adequately match the input of ICT experts. As a result, medical disciplines may not be able to take full advantage of growing possibilities. In this personal viewpoint paper, I argue for the establishment of a novel medical specialty, ICT medicine. ICT medicine is needed to optimally face the challenges of ICT-based developments, including artificial intelligence (AI), and to ensure their efficient and beneficial use. ICT medicine is rooted in both medicine and ICT, and in contrast to existing medical specialties it is integrative in nature, as long-standing structural collaborations with ICT and other stakeholders cross the boundaries between disciplines. Thus, new concepts and theories may evolve that are better suited to addressing ICT-related issues in medicine. ICT doctors will be instrumental in the conception, development, implementation, and evaluation of digital tools, systems, and services. They provide a bridge between ICT professionals and clinical users and educate doctors in digital applications and services. Notably, ICT doctors may have a pivotal role in the validation, verification, and evaluation of AI models. ICT medicine institutes offer a home to these new professionals, enhancing their independence within health care organizations and in relation to ICT companies. Importantly, in an era of growing technicalization and use of AI algorithms, ICT doctors may safeguard the human factor in medicine. And, from a societal perspective, they may promote digital inclusion and the continuing high quality of digital services and provide leadership in the future digitalization of medicine.

Abstract:Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is increasingly playing a pivotal role in the delivery of healthcare services. Effective use of ICT in the health sector has the potential to improve the efficiency of health care and public health service delivery. Health is affected profoundly by the application of ICT, which changes the way people can access knowledge and the way they communicate with one another daily (Mechael, 2005). This paper discusses a comparative analysis of the usage of ICT in health care, specifically in the countries of South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi. The study was conducted by examining scientific research papers in journals and conference proceedings. The paper has revealed that there are disparities in the usage of ICT within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regions, especially among South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi. In general, SADC faces a lot of challenges such as lack of financial resources, poor infrastructure and lack of cyber-legislation. However, the situation in the SADC region can improve if there is a harmonization of cyber-legislation. Apart from improving infrastructure, there is also a need to increase trade and ecommerce among member countries.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Drawing from a larger study that identified the supports and services that facilitate wellness among older people from rural communities, this study examined the specific contribution made by information and communication technology (ICT).METHODS: Qualitative interviews were undertaken with 60 older adults from six Australian rural areas. A preliminary thematic analysis was conducted, followed by a higher-order inductive analysis.RESULTS: Information and communication technology use was discussed in terms of individual enrichment, and in terms of enabling connections between the individual and their social networks, community and wider service environments.CONCLUSION: Information and communication technologies may facilitate wellness for rural older people by compensating for geographical and social isolation. In the changing world of health and aged care service delivery, ICTs will be more important than ever for rural older people in building their capacity to access the services, socialisation and support that they need, regardless of location.

Abstract:Abstract Background Understanding the use of tele-intensive care unit (ICU) services is an essential component in evaluating current practice and informing future use as the adoption and application of teleICU services expands. We sought to explore if novel ways to utilize teleICU services can emerge within an established, consulting-style teleICU model considering the program’s flexible, provider-driven operation. Methods This was a qualitative study of one teleICU/hospital dyad using semi-structured interviews from a convenience sample of ICU ( n = 19) and teleICU ( n = 13) nurses. Interviews were analyzed using directed content analysis to identify themes that describe their experiences with teleICU using a deductive codebook developed from an expert consensus (American Association of Critical Care Nurses) AACN statement on teleICU nursing. Results Three themes were identified through the qualitative content analysis: [1] nurses described unique teleICU knowledge, including systems thinking and technological skills, [2] the teleICU partnership supported quality improvement initiatives, and [3] elements of the work environment influenced perceptions of teleICU and its use. When elements of the work environment, such as effective communication and role clarity, were not present, teleICU use was variable. Conclusions Flexible, provider-driven approaches for integrating teleICU services into daily practice may help define the future use of the teleICU model’s applicability. Future work should focus on the importance of effective communication and role clarity in integrating the emerging teleICU services into teleICU/ICU practice.
