Abstract:Advancements in x-ray free-electron lasers on producing ultrashort, ultrabright, and coherent x-ray pulses enable single-shot imaging of fragile nanostructures, such as superfluid helium droplets. This imaging technique gives unique access to the sizes and shapes of individual droplets. In the past, such droplet characteristics have only been indirectly inferred by ensemble averaging techniques. Here, we report on the size distributions of both pure and doped droplets collected from single-shot x-ray imaging and produced from the free-jet expansion of helium through a 5 μm diameter nozzle at 20 bars and nozzle temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 9 K. This work extends the measurement of large helium nanodroplets containing 10<sup>9</sup>-10<sup>11</sup> atoms, which are shown to follow an exponential size distribution. Additionally, we demonstrate that the size distributions of the doped droplets follow those of the pure droplets at the same stagnation condition but with smaller average sizes.

Formation of heterogeneous clusters in superfluid helium nanodroplets: phthalocyanine and water

Abstract:Clusters consisting of a single phthalocyanine molecule and a single water molecule are investigated by means of electronic spectroscopy in superfluid helium droplets. A recent spectroscopic study of those clusters [J. Fischer, F. Schlaghaufer, E.-M. Lottner, A. Slenczka, L. Christiansen, H. Stapelfeldt, M. Karra, B. Friedrich, T. Mullan, M. Schütz and D. Usvyat, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2019, 123, 10057-10064] which all exhibit a water induced electronic shift to the red is now complemented by the corresponding clusters exhibiting a water induced shift to the blue. These clusters will be analyzed by means of fluorescence excitation spectra, dispersed emission spectra, and additional experimental observations made feasible by helium droplets as cryogenic reactor. Together with the blue shifted clusters a total number of at least 6 isomeric variants could be identified in helium droplets. This contrasts to a number of only three isomeric variants obtained from quantum chemical calculations [J. Fischer, F. Schlaghaufer, E.-M. Lottner, A. Slenczka, L. Christiansen, H. Stapelfeldt, M. Karra, B. Friedrich, T. Mullan, M. Schütz and D. Usvyat, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2019, 123, 10057-10064] disregarding the helium environment and to a single isomer identified in a molecular beam experiment [J. Menapace and E. Bernstein, J. Chem. Phys., 1987, 87, 6877-6889]. The discrepancy in the number of isomers provides evidence of a profound involvement of helium in clustering. Moreover, the discrepancies between the gas phase experiment and quantum chemical calculations similarly reveal the influence of the dynamics of cluster formation on the population of global and local minima that are accessible as isomeric variants.
Long-lived nuclear coherences inside helium nanodroplets

Abstract:Much of our knowledge about dynamics and functionality of molecular systems has been achieved with femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. Despite extensive technical developments over the past decades, some classes of systems have eluded dynamical studies so far. Here, we demonstrate that superfluid helium nanodroplets, acting as thermal bath of 0.4 K temperature to stabilize weakly bound or reactive systems, are well suited for time-resolved studies of single molecules solvated in the droplet interior. By observing vibrational wavepacket motion of indium dimers (In$_2$) for over 50 ps, we demonstrate that the perturbation imposed by this quantum liquid can be lower by a factor of 10-100 compared to any other solvent, which uniquely allows to study processes depending on long nuclear coherence in a dissipative environment. Furthermore, tailor-made microsolvation environments inside droplets will enable to investigate the solvent influence on intramolecular dynamics in a wide tuning range from molecular isolation to strong molecule-solvent coupling.

Abstract:The spectroscopy of free radicals and radical containing entrance-channel complexes embedded in superfluid helium nano-droplets is reviewed. The collection of dopants inside individual droplets in the beam represents a micro-canonical ensemble, and as such each droplet may be considered an isolated cryo-reactor. The unique properties of the droplets, namely their low temperature (0.4 K) and fast cooling rates ($\sim10^{16}$ K s$^{-1}$) provides novel opportunities for the formation and high-resolution studies of molecular complexes containing one or more free radicals. The production methods of radicals are discussed in light of their applicability for embedding the radicals in helium droplets. The spectroscopic studies performed to date on molecular radicals and on entrance / exit-channel complexes of radicals with stable molecules are detailed. The observed complexes provide new information on the potential energy surfaces of several fundamental chemical reactions and on the intermolecular interactions present in open-shell systems. Prospects of further experiments of radicals embedded in helium droplets are discussed, especially the possibilities to prepare and study high-energy structures and their controlled manipulation, as well as the possibility of fundamental physics experiments.
Real-time tracking the energy flow in cluster formation

Abstract:While photodissociation of molecular systems has been extensively studied, the photoinduced formation of chemical bonds remains largely unexplored. Especially for larger aggregates, the electronic and nuclear dynamics involved in the cluster formation process remain elusive. This limitation is rooted in difficulties to prepare reactants at well-defined initial conditions. Here, we overcome this hurdle by exploiting the exceptional solvation properties of helium nanodroplets. We load the droplets with Mg atoms and investigate the dynamical response of the formed Mg$_n$ aggregates to photoexcitation with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Beside the response expected for conventional Mg$_n$ clusters, consisting of a prompt signal rise and a decay characteristic for van der Waals bonds, the transient spectra also show a delayed photoelectron band peaking at 1.2 ps. This delayed signal rise is characteristic for nuclear dynamics and represents the transition of Mg$_n$ aggregates from a metastable, foam-like configuration, where Mg atoms are stabilized with a previously predicted interatomic spacing of 9.5 A, to a compact cluster. With global fitting analysis and ion-electron coincidence detection, the concerted electronic and nuclear dynamics can be tracked on a fs timescale. We find that cluster formation, proceeding with a ($450\pm180$) fs time constant, is accompanied by the population of highly-excited atomic states. We propose an energy pooling reaction in collisions of two or more excited Mg atoms during cluster formation as the mechanism leading to population of these high-lying Mg states. Additionally, conversion to kinetic energy through electronic relaxation leads to fragmentation and ejection of ionic cluster fragments from the He droplet. These results underline the potential of He droplets for time-resolved studies of bond formation and to uncover involved processes.

Abstract:Helium nanodroplets are ideal model systems to unravel the complex interaction of condensed matter with ionizing radiation. Here we study the effect of purely elastic electron scattering on angular and energy distributions of photoelectrons emitted from He nanodroplets of variable size ($10$-$10^9$ atoms per droplets). For large droplets, photoelectrons develop a pronounced anisotropy along the incident light beam due to a shadowing effect within the droplets. In contrast, the detected photoelectron spectra are only weakly perturbed. This opens up possibilities for photoelectron spectroscopy of dopants embedded in droplets provided they are smaller than the penetration depth of the light and the trapping range of emitted electrons.

Detailed study of dissipative quantum dynamics of K-2 attached to helium nanodroplets

Abstract:We thoroughly investigate vibrational quantum dynamics of dimers attached to He droplets motivated by recent measurements with K-2 [1]. For those femtosecond pump-probe experiments, crucial observed features are not reproduced by gas phase calculations but agreement is found using a description based on dissipative quantum dynamics, as briefly shown in [2]. Here we present a detailed study of the influence of possible effects induced by the droplet. The helium droplet causes electronic decoherence, shifts of potential surfaces, and relaxation of wave packets in attached dimers. Moreover, a realistic description of (stochastic) desorption of dimers off the droplet needs to be taken into account. Step by step we include and study the importance of these effects in our full quantum calculation. This allows us to reproduce and explain all major experimental findings. We find that desorption is fast and occurs already within 2-10 ps after electronic excitation. A further finding is that slow vibrational motion in the ground state can be considered frictionless.

Abstract:We compute ground and excited state properties of small helium clusters 4He_N containing a single benzene impurity molecule. Ground-state structures and energies are obtained for N=1,2,3,14 from importance-sampled, rigid-body diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC). Excited state energies due to helium vibrational motion near the molecule surface are evaluated using the projection operator, imaginary time spectral evolution (POITSE) method. We find excitation energies of up to ~23 K above the ground state. These states all possess vibrational character of helium atoms in a highly anisotropic potential due to the aromatic molecule, and can be categorized in terms of localized and collective vibrational modes. These results appear to provide precursors for a transition from localized to collective helium excitations at molecular nanosubstrates of increasing size. We discuss the implications of these results for analysis of anomalous spectral features in recent spectroscopic studies of large aromatic molecules in helium clusters.

Abstract:We develop a local excited-state method, based on the configuration interaction singles (CIS) wave function, for large atomic and molecular clusters. This method exploits the properties of absolutely localized molecular orbitals (ALMOs), which strictly limits the total number of excitations, and results in formal scaling with the third power of the system size for computing the full spectrum of ALMO-CIS excited states. The derivation of the equations and design of the algorithm are discussed in detail, with particular emphasis on the computational scaling. Clusters containing similar to 500 atoms were used in evaluating the scaling, which agrees with the theoretical predictions, and the accuracy of the method is evaluated with respect to standard CIS. A pioneering application to the size dependence of the helium cluster spectrum is also presented for clusters of 25-231 atoms, the largest of which results in the computation of 2310 excited states per sampled cluster geometry.

Abstract:The vibrational wave-packet dynamics of diatomic rubidium molecules (Rb2) in triplet states formed on the surface of superfluid helium nanodroplets is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Detailed comparison of experimental femtosecond pump-probe spectra with dissipative quantum dynamics simulations reveals that vibrational relaxation is the main source of dephasing. The rate constant for vibrational relaxation in the first excited triplet state is found to be constant ~0.5ns^-1 for the lowest vibrational levels v< 15 and to increase sharply when exciting to higher energies.

Abstract:A Rydberg–Ritz approach is used for the interpretation of Rb–He and Cs–He Rydberg states and Rydberg series. Variations of the quantum defects within a Rydberg series give insight into the interaction between the alkali atom’s valence electron and the superfluid helium droplet. A screening of the valence electron from the alkali atom core by the helium droplet is observed for high Rydberg states. For states with lower principal quantum number, the effect decreases and the quantum defects are found to lie closer to free atom values, indicating an increased probability for the electron to be found inside the alkali atom core. An investigation of the spin–orbit splitting of the Cs–He nP(2Π) components reveals that the splitting of the lowest 2Π states is more atom-like [Hund’s case (c) coupling] than at higher n states [Hund’s case (a) coupling]. In addition, we report a detailed study of the droplet size dependence of Ak–He Rydberg series on the example of the Rb–He D(Δ) series. Higher Rydberg states of this series are strongly redshifted, which is also related to the screening effect.

Abstract:For many atoms and molecules, small multiply charged clusters are unstable with respect to spontaneous charge separation. When bare CO2 clusters are ionized by electrons, the smallest detected dications contain 43 molecules. The same appearance size has been obtained when neutral CO2 clusters embedded in helium nanodroplets are electron ionized. Here we show that electron ionization of singly charged CO2 clusters solvated in helium nanodroplets drastically lowers the appearance size to na = 30. The combination of efficient cooling in superfluid helium, sequential ionization, and gentle collisions of the nanodroplets with helium gas makes it possible to form dications that are barely larger than the Rayleigh limit.

Electron diffraction of 1,4-dichlorobenzene embedded in superfluid helium droplets

Abstract:We perform electron diffraction of 1,4-dichlorobenzene (C6H4Cl2, referred to as 2ClB) embedded in superfluid helium droplets to investigate the structure evolution of cluster growth. Multivariable linear regression fittings are used to determine the concentration and the best model structures of the clusters. At a droplet source temperature of 22 K with droplets containing on average 5000 He atoms, the fitting results agree with the doping statistics modeled using the Poisson distribution: the largest molecular clusters are tetramers, while the abundances of monomers and dimers are the highest and are similar. Molecular dimers of 2ClB are determined to have a parallel structure with a 60° rotation for the Cl-Cl molecular axes. However, a better agreement between experiment and fitting is obtained by reducing the interlayer distance that had been calculated using the density functional theory for dimers. Further calculations using the highest level quantum mechanical calculations prove that the reduction in interlayer distance does not significantly increase the energy of the dimer. Cluster trimers adopt a dimer structure with the additional monomer slanted against the dimer, and tetramers take on a stacked structure. The structure evolution with cluster size is extraordinary, because from trimer to tetramer, one monomer needs to be rearranged, and neither the trimer nor the tetramer adopts the corresponding global minimum structure obtained using high level coupled-cluster theory calculations. This phenomenon may be related to the fast cooling process in superfluid helium droplets during cluster formation.

Abstract:Femtosecond multiphoton pump-probe photoionization is applied to helium nanodroplets doped with rubidium (Rb). The yield of Rb+ ions features pronounced quantum interference (QI) fringes demonstrating the coherence of a superposition of electronic states on a time scale of tens of picoseconds. Furthermore, we observe QI in the yield of formed RbHe exciplex molecules. The quantum interferogram allows to determine the vibrational structure of these unstable molecules. From a sliced Fourier analysis one can not only extract the population dynamics of vibrational states but also follow their energetic evolution during the RbHe formation.

Abstract:Simulations of the n = 2 absorption spectra of HeN (N = 70, 150, 231, 300) clusters are reported, with nuclear configurations sampled by path integral molecular dynamics. The electronic structure is treated by a new approach, ALMO-CIS+CT, which is a formulation of configuration interaction singles (CIS) based on absolutely localized molecular orbitals (ALMOs). The method generalizes the previously reported ALMO-CIS model [K. D. Closser et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 11, 5791 (2015)] to include spatially localized charge transfer (CT) effects. It is designed to recover large numbers of excited states in atomic and molecular clusters, such as the entire n = 2 Rydberg band in helium clusters. ALMO-CIS+ CT is shown to recover most of the error caused by neglecting charge transfer in ALMO-CIS and has comparable accuracy to standard CIS for helium clusters. For the n = 2 band, CT stabilizes states towards the blue edge by up to 0.5 eV. ALMO-CIS+ CT retains the formal cubic scaling of ALMO-CIS with respect to system size. With improvements to the implementation over that originally reported for ALMO-CIS, ALMO-CIS+ CT is able to treat helium clusters with hundreds of atoms using modest computing resources. A detailed simulation of the absorption spectra associated with the 2s and 2p bands of helium clusters up to 300 atoms is reported, using path integral molecular dynamics with a spherical boundary condition to generate atomic configurations at 3 K. The main features of experimentally reported fluorescence excitation spectra for helium clusters are reproduced. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The stability of two-component clusters consisting of light (Na or K) and heavy (Rb or Cs) alkali atoms formed on helium nanodroplets is studied by femtosecond laser ionization in combination with mass spectrometry. Characteristic stability patterns reflecting electron shell-closures are observed in dependence of the total number of atoms contained in the mixed clusters. Faster decay of the stability of mixed clusters compared to the pure light ones as a function of size indicates a destabilizing effect of heavy alkali atoms on light alkali clusters, presumably due to second order spin-orbit interaction.

Quantum Droplets in Imbalanced Atomic Mixtures

Abstract:Quantum droplets are a quantum analogue to classical fluid droplets in that they are self-bound and display liquid-like properties -- such as incompressibility and surface tension -- though their stability is the result of quantum fluctuations. One of the major systems for observing quantum droplets is two-component Bose gases. Two-component droplets are typically considered to be balanced, having a fixed ratio between the densities of the two component. This work goes beyond the fixed density ratio by investigating spherical droplets in imbalanced mixtures. With increasing imbalance, the droplet is able to lower its energy up to a limit, at which point the droplet becomes saturated with the atoms of the majority component and any further atoms added to this component cannot bind to the droplet. Analysing the breathing mode dynamics of imbalanced droplets indicates that the droplet can emit particles, as in balanced mixtures, but the imbalance leads to an intricate superposition of multiple simultaneously decaying collective oscillations.

Quantized vortex nucleation in collisions of superfluid nanoscopic helium droplets at zero temperature

Abstract:We address the collision of two superfluid 4 He droplets at non-zero initial relative velocities and impact parameters within the framework of liquid 4 He time-dependent density functional theory at zero temperature. In spite of the small size of these droplets (1000 He atoms in the merged droplet) imposed by computational limitations, we have found that quantized vortices may be readily nucleated for reasonable collision parameters. At variance with head-on collisions, where only vortex rings are produced, collisions with non-zero impact parameter produce linear vortices which are nucleated at indentations appearing on the surface of the deformed merged droplet. Whereas for equal-size droplets vortices are produced in pairs, an odd number of vortices can appear when the colliding droplet sizes are different. In all cases vortices coexist with surface capillary waves. The possibility for collisions to be at the origin of vortex nucleation in experiments involving very large droplets is discussed. An additional surprising result is the observation of the drops coalescence even for grazing and distal collisions at relative velocities as high as 80 m/s and 40 m/s, respectively, induced by the long-range Van der Waals attraction between the droplets.

Abstract:Helium nanodroplets (“HNDs”) are widely used for forming tailor-made clusters and molecular complexes in a cold, transparent, and weakly interacting matrix. The characterization of embedded species by mass spectrometry is often complicated by the fragmentation and trapping of ions in the HNDs. Here, we systematically study fragment ion mass spectra of HND-aggregated water and oxygen clusters following their ionization by charge transfer ionization (“CTI”) and Penning ionization (“PEI”). While the efficiency of PEI of embedded clusters is lower than for CTI by about factor 10, both the mean sizes of detected water clusters and the relative yields of unprotonated cluster ions are significantly larger, making PEI a “soft ionization” scheme. However, the tendency of ions to remain bound to HNDs leads to a reduced detection efficiency for large HNDs containing >104 helium atoms. These results are instrumental in determining optimal conditions for mass spectrometry and photoionization spectroscopy of molecular complexes and clusters aggregated in HNDs.
