Abstract:Seepage from oil sands tailings ponds (OSTP), which contain toxic naphthenic acids (NAs), can infiltrate into groundwater. Clay sediment layer beneath is a critical barrier for reducing the infiltration of NAs into the sand sediment layer, where groundwater channels reside. Biodegradation has great potential as a strategy for NAs removal, but little is known about NAs biodegradability and potential functional microbes in these pristine sediments. This study investigated the potential for anaerobic biodegradation of NAs by microbial consortia enriched from clay and sand sediments underlying OSTP, amended with either acid extracted organics or Merichem NAs, under nitrate- and sulfate-reducing conditions. Degradation of NAs only be detected after DOC concentration reached to steady state after 163 days. Microbial community analysis shows that different electron acceptors, sediment types, and NAs sources associated with specific microbial taxa and can explain 14.8, 13.9 % and 5% of variation of microbial community structures, respectively. The DOC and methane were the most important geochemical properties for microbial community variations. This study approved the potential capability of indigenous microbial communities from the pristine sediments in NA degradation, demonstrating the barrier function of pristine clay sediments underlying OSTP in prohibiting organic contaminants from entering into groundwater.
Indigenous Microorganisms Residing in Oil Sands Tailings Biodegrade Residual Bitumen.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the capacity of indigenous microbes in tailings to degrade bitumen aerobically, and if acetate biostimulation further improved degradation. Fluid fine tailings, from Base Mine Lake (BML), were used as microbial inocula, and bitumen in the tailings served as a potential carbon source during the experiment. The tailings were capped with 0.22 mu m-filtered BML surface water with or without BML bitumen and acetate addition and incubated for 100 days at 20 degrees C. CO2 production and petroleum hydrocarbon reductions (50-70% for the biostimulation treatment) in the tailings were observed. DNA was extracted directly from the tailings, and increased bacterial density was observed by qPCR targeting the rpoB gene in the biostimulated group. 16 S rRNA sequencing was used to determine microbial composition profiles in each treatment group. The microbial communities indigenous to the tailings shifted after the bitumen was added. Acidovorax, Rhodoferax, Pseudomonas and Pseudox-anthomonas spp. significantly increased compared to the original microbial community and demonstrated tolerance to bitumen-based toxicity. The first three genera showed more potential for biostimulation treatment with acetate and may be important bitumen/hydrocarbon-degraders in an oil sands end pit lake environment. Anaerobic Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (pahs) by Fungi Isolated from Anaerobic Coal-Associated Sediments at 2.5 Km below the Seafloor

Abstract:Fungi represent the dominant eukaryotic group in the deep biosphere and well-populated in the anaerobic coal bearing sediments up to-2.5 km below seafloor (kmbsf). But whether fungi are able to degrade and utilize coal to sustain growth in the anaerobic sub-seafloor environment remains unknown. Based on biodegradation investigation, we found that fungi isolated from sub-seafloor sediments at depths of-1.3--2.5 kmbsf showed a broad range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) anaerobic degradation rates (3-25%). Among them, the white-rot fungus Schizophyllium commune 20R-7-F01 exhibited the highest degradation, 25%, 18% and 13%, of phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP); respectively, after 10 days of anaerobic incubation. Phe was utilized well and about 40.4% was degraded by the fungus, after 20 days of anaerobic incubation. Moreover, the ability of fungi to degrade PAHs was positively correlated with the anaerobic growth of fungi, indicating that fungi can use PAHs as a sole carbon source under anoxic conditions. In addition, fungal degradation of PAHs was found to be related to the activity of carboxylases, but little or nothing to do with the activity of lignin modifying enzymes such as laccase (Lac), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP). These results suggest that sub-seafloor fungi possess a special mechanism to degrade and utilize PAHs as a carbon and energy source under anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, fungi living in sub-seafloor sediments may not only play an important role in carbon cycle in the anaerobic environments of the deep biosphere, but also be able to persist in deep sediment below seafloor for millions of years by using PAHs or related compounds as carbon and energy source. This anaerobic biodegradation ability could make these fungi suitable candidates for bioremediation of toxic pollutants such as PAHs from anoxic environments.
Soil Microbial Community Profiling and Bacterial Metabolic Activity of Technosols as an Effect of Soil Properties following Land Reclamation: A Case Study from the Abandoned Iron Sulphide and Uranium Mine in Rudki (South-Central Poland)

Abstract:The aims of the study were (1) to recognize the structure of bacteria diversity in Technosols developed from mine spoils containing iron (Fe) sulphides with the use of culture-independent technique, and (2) to determine microbial metabolic activities, in the context of their potential to be an adequate indicators of soil properties being the consequence of land reclamation. The study site was located in the vicinity of the abandoned Fe sulphide and uranium mine in Rudki village (Holy Cross Mts., Poland). Three soil profiles with different chemical properties (pH, content of carbonates, soil salinity, content of total organic carbon and total nitrogen) were studied. Biodiversity was determined with the use of meta-barcoding of 16S rRNA community profiling analysis based on the hypervariable V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA gene (MiSeq, Illumina). The catabolic fingerprinting of soil microbial communities was evaluated with the use of Biolog®EcoPlatesTM System. It was evidenced that changes in microbial structure and their metabolic activity were the consequence of a combined effect of both the soil depth and soil chemical properties being the final result of reclamation process. Consequently, microbial indicators (from phyla to genera level) indirectly testifying about success or ineffectiveness of reclamation in technogenic soils were recommended. To our best knowledge, the present study is the first insight into Polish Technosols biodiversity and catabolic activity.
Biodegradation of ferrihydrite-associated organic matter

Abstract:The association of organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a major mechanism to stabilize soil organic matter against biodegradation. We performed microbial incubation experiments to quantify the mineralization of soil organic matter associated with ferrihydrite by adsorption and coprecipitation. Samples were produced using either water-extractable organic matter of a Podzol forest-floor layer (FFE) or a sulfonated lignin. Incubation was carried out with an inoculum extracted from the forest-floor layer under oxic conditions at pH 4.8 over 68 days. Our data show that the association with ferrihydrite stabilized the associated organic matter: the degradation of the polysaccharide-rich FFE was slowed down, while the degradation of lignin was inhibited. Since differences in the degradability of adsorbed and coprecipitated organic matter were small, we conclude that coprecipitation did not lead to a significant formation of microbial inaccessible organic matter domains in our experiments.

Enhanced biodegradation of oil-contaminated soil oil in shale gas exploitation by biochar immobilization

Abstract:The enhanced biodegradation of oil-contaminated soil by fixing microorganisms with corn cob biochar was investigated. It was found that the components of oil in the test soil were mainly straight-chain alkanes and branched alkanes. When using corn cob biochar as a carrier to immobilize microorganisms, the best particle size of corn cob biochar as an immobilization carrier was 0.08 mm, and the best immobilization time was 18 h. SEM analysis confirmed that the microorganisms were immobilized on the corn cob biochar. Immobilized microorganisms exhibited high biodegradability under stress to high concentrations of petroleum pollutants, heavy metals, and organic pollutants. Infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that oxygen-containing groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and methoxy on the surface of biochar were involved in the complexation of heavy metals. The mechanism of immobilization promoted microbial degradation of oil contamination was explained by gas chromatography mass. First, alkanes and aromatics were adsorbed by corn cob biochar and passed to immobilized microorganisms to promote their degradation. Their bioavailability increased, especially for aromatics. Second, biochar provided a more suitable environment for microorganisms to degrade. Third, the conversion of ketones to acids was accelerated during the biodegradation of alkanes, and the biodegradation of alkanes was accelerated by immobilization. The biodegradable efficiency of oil by immobilized microorganisms in soil was 70.10% within 60 days, 28.80% higher than that of free microorganisms. The degradation of immobilized microorganisms was highly correlated with the activities of catalase, urease, and polyphenol oxidase.

Abstract:This study conducted the sorption and biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by microbial biofilm communities developed on proxies for materials typically found in soils. The half-life of BaP was 4.7 and 2.3 weeks for biofilms on the inorganic carrier (BCINOR, montmorillonite) and on the organic carrier (BCOR, humic acid), respectively. In contrast, the half-life was 7.0 weeks for specialized planktonic cultures (PK). The exposure to BaP caused the development of lipid inclusion bodies inside the bacteria of the PK systems and biofilms of the BCINOR, but not on the biofilms of the BCOR system. Interestingly, the BCOR displayed not only the greatest BaP sorption capacity but also the greatest bacterial density and membrane integrity and the shortest bacteria-to-bacteria distances, which were consistent with the increased production of cell surface extracellular polymeric substances on the BCOR. Both carriers caused a noticeable shift in the bacterial genera during the biodegradation of the BaP. The BCINOR selected for Rhodococcus, Brucella, Chitinophaga, and Labrys, whereas the BCOR favored Rhodococcus and Dokdonella. It indicated that ultra-structure and BaP degradation within the organic carrier-attached biofilms differed from the inorganic ones, and suggested that the microstructural heterogeneity and microbial biodiversity from biofilms on the organic carrier promoted biodegradation.
Biodegradation of high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by Sarocladium terricola strain PYR-233 isolated from petrochemical contaminated sediment

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were frequently found in sediment and were primarily treated through microbial degradation. Thus, efficient management of PAH pollution requires exploring the molecular degradation mechanisms of PAHs and expanding the pool of available microbial resources. A fungus (identified as Sarocladium terricola strain RCEF778) with the remarkable ability to degrade pyrene was screened from sediment near a petrochemical plant, and its growth and pyrene degradation characteristics were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the fungus exhibited great effectiveness in pyrene degradation, with a degradation ratio of 88.97% at 21 days at the conditions: 35 °C, pH 7, 10 mg L-1 initially pyrene concentration, 3% supplementary salt, and glucose supplementation. The generation and concentration variation of the intermediate products were identified, and the results revealed that the fungus degraded pyrene through two pathways: by salicylic acid and by phthalic acid. Three sediments (M1, M2, M3), each exhibiting different levels of PAH pollution, were employed to examine the effectiveness of fungal degradation of PAHs in practical sediment samples. These data showed that with the fungus, the degradation ratios ranged from 13.64% to 23.50% for 2-3 rings PAHs, 40.93%-49.41% for 4 rings PAHs, and 39.59%-48.07% for 5-6 rings PAHs, which were significantly higher than those for the sediment without the fungus and confirmed the excellent performance of the fungal. Moreover, the Gompertz model was employed to analyze the degradation kinetics of 4-rings and 5-6 rings PAHs in these sediments, and the results demonstrated that the addition of the fungus could significantly increase the maximum degradation ratio, degradation start-up rate and maximum degradation rate of 4-rings and 5-6 rings PAHs and shorten the time required to reach the maximum degradation rate. This study not only supplied fungal materials but also established crucial theoretical foundations for the development of bioremediation technologies aimed at high molecular weight PAH-contaminated sediments.
Bio-polysaccharide composites mediated degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in a sandy soil using free and immobilized consortium of Kocuria rosea and Aspergillus sydowii

Abstract:Based on our previous study in minimal medium, Kocuria rosea and Aspergillus sydowii were identified as the best microbes for degradation of mixture of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The present study reports PAH degradation potential of these microbes in free and immobilized form. PAHs were extracted using QuEChERS-mediated process followed by quantification by high performance liquid chromatography. The microbial consortium of Kocuria rosea + Aspergillus sydowii was formulated in three bio-formulations, namely (i) bentonite-alginate composite beads; (ii) water dispersible granule composite using guar gum-nanobentonite; and (iii) composites of carboxymethyl cellulose-bentonite and were applied in PAH fortified (100 µg g−1) sandy loam soil. Results suggested that degradation data fitted well to first order kinetics as in most of the cases, the values of correlation coefficient (r) were > 0.95. The half-life (t1/2) values for PAHs in the uninoculated control soil were: naphthalene (10.43 d), fluorene (22.43 d), phenanthrene (24.64 d), anthracene (38.47 d), and pyrene (34.34 d). Inoculation of soil with free culture microbial consortium (without or with nutrient) and bio-formulation of degrading cultures enhanced degradation of all PAHs and half-life values were significantly reduced for each PAH: naphthalene (1.76–2.00 d), fluorene (2.52–6.65 d), phenanthrene (4.61–6.37 d), anthracene (9.01–12.22 d), and pyrene (10.98–15.55 d). Among different bio-formulations, guar gum-nanobentonite-based composite exhibited better efficacy for degradation of naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene. The addition of microbial consortium in PAH fortified soil increased 16S rRNA gene copies of Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, compared to the uninoculated, PAH-fortified control. The microbial functional gene assays showed that the gene copies of amoA, nirK, nirS, and anammox increased, suggesting nitrogen regulation in the PAH-fortified soil.

Abstract:PurposePlant residue decomposition, porosity status and biological activity in heavily polluted with Zn, Pb and Cd post-mining soils were investigated in relation to natural soil in the area. The study was carried out on soils from different ages and vegetation cover. This work aimed at studying the influence of heavy metal concentration on the humus layer formation with the help of micromorphological methods.Materials and methodsSoil samples were collected from 5 sites situated in the Zn and Pb mining area and from one site located in the vicinity but unchanged by mining works. In each site, a representative area of about 100 m2 was selected and soil samples from 5 randomly selected plots were taken from surface and subsurface layers. Chemical, micromorphological and biological analyses were conducted in order to evaluate humus transformations occurring in studied soils and to establish the main factors affecting these processes. In images taken from thin sections, we separated and measured areas covered by decomposed organic matter, plant residues and pores.Results and discussionMine soils had similar pH soil values (6.7–7.1); only one natural soil was moderately acid (pH = 5.6). The soils differed in SOM content, from 30.84 to 168 g kg−1. Mine soils were contaminated with heavy metals up to 10,980 mg Zn, 5436 mg Pb and 95.2 mg Cd·kg−1. The largest amount of the medium-sized and large plant residues (18.4 and 20.5%) were found in post-mining soil covered with xerothermic flora typical of metalliferous areas. The lowest amount of small residues was found in post-mining forest soil. The diversified accumulation of plant residues reflected the organic matter decomposition ratio varying from 1.64 (post-mining soil 15% covered with calamine flora) to 62.7% (natural soil covered with forest). In the natural soil, rounded pores prevailed, while in post-mining soils, planar pores dominated. Invertase activity ranged from 1.64 to 154.2 mg of inverted sugar, and carbon of microbial biomass ranged from 5.94 to 731.2 μg g−1. Both characteristics were related to the amount of organic matter regardless of the heavy-metal pollution.ConclusionsThe results showed that a decomposition ratio was lower in mining soils than in the natural soil, and large plant residues were accumulated in surface layers. Microbial activity was more influenced by plant cover density and diversity than by heavy metal concentration. The evolution in the organic matter form and pore shapes with the soil age and the vegetation cover was observed.

Abstract:AbstractPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in the environment involves multiple PAHs and various intermediates produced during the microbial metabolic process. A multi-substrate enrichment approach was proposed to develop a mixed bacterial community (MBC) from the activated sludge of a coking wastewater plant. The degradation performance of MBC was evaluated under different initial concentrations of PAHs (25–200 mg/L), temperature (20–35 °C), pH (5.0–9.0), salinity (0–10 g/L NaCl), and coexisting substrates (catechol, salicylic acid, and phthalic acid). The results showed that the degradation rates of phenanthrene and pyrene in all treatments were up to (99 ± 0.71)% and (99 ± 0.90)% after incubation of 5 days, respectively, indicating excellent biodegradation ability of PAHs by MBC. Furthermore, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that Pseudomonas was dominant, while Burkholderia had the largest proportion in acidic (pH = 5.0) and saline (10 g/L NaCl) environments. However, the proportion of dominant bacteria in MBC was markedly affected by intermediate metabolites. It was shown that MBC had a higher degradation rate of PAHs in the coexisting matrix due to the timely clearance of intermediates reducing the metabolic burden. Overall, our study provided valuable information to help design an effective strategy for the bioremediation of PAHs in complex environments.

Abstract:Microbial degradation is the dominant pathway for natural attenuation of PAHs in environmental compartments such as sediments, which in turn depends on the bioavailability of PAHs. The bioavailability of PAHs has seldom been studied at the sediment particle size scale. We evaluated biodegradation of pyrene by Mycobacterium vanbaalenii PYR-1 as a function of sediment particle sizes, and investigated the relationship between the rate of degradation on sand, silt and clay particles with their individual desorption kinetics measured with the Tenax extraction method. Regression analysis showed that the total organic carbon (TOC), black carbon (BC), and specific surface area (SSA) of the specific particle size fractions, instead of the particle size scale itself, were closely related ( P < 0.01) with the mineralization rate. While the fraction in the rapid desorption pool ( F rapid ) ranged from 0.11 to 0.38 for the whole sediments and different size groups, the fractions mineralized after 336-h incubation (0.52 to 0.72) greatly surpassed the F rapid values, suggesting utilization of pyrene in the slow desorption pool ( F slow ). A biodegradation model was modified by imbedding a two-phase desorption relationship describing sequential Tenax extractions. Model analysis showed that pyrene sorbed on silt and clay aggregates was directly utilized by the degrading bacteria. The enhanced bioavailability may be attributed to the higher chemical concentration, higher TOC or larger SSA in the silt and clay fractions, which appeared to overcome the reduced bioavailability of pyrene due to sorption, making pyrene on the silt and clay particles readily available to degrading microbes. This conjecture merits further investigation.

Abstract:Soil at a site near Zibo City, China, is polluted with hydrocarbons at concentrations up to 200 g kg(-1) dry soil. Samples contained 10(7) microbial cells g(-1) dry soil, and the concentration of aerobic degradation bacteria is 107 cells g-l dry soil. The most active species were Xanthomonas, Bacillus and Hyphomicrobium. The nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the polluted soil are typically 0.1%, and are sufficient to sustain natural or enhanced biodegradation. The BAC (Biological Activated Carbon) system was used to enrich indigenous microbes to enhance bioremediation rates in the laboratory. The BAC used the large surface area and sorption characteristics to fix bacteria and media, and effectively culture and enrich the microbes. Effluent from the BAC system contained up to 4 x 10(11) cells ml(-1), and was introduced to the contaminated soil to enhance biodegradation. The results indicated that the natural biodegradation rate of the petroleum hydrocarbons is lower than the BAC enhanced bioremediation rate, 1.7% as opposed to 42% in 32 days. Therefore, the research presented in this article, focusing on the EM impact on the mixture of PAHs, reflects the conditions most similar to natural ones. On Day 35 of the experiment, PAH levels decreased by 75.5–95.5%. The highest PAHs degradation efficiency was achieved for fluorene, with a preparation containing eight bacteria strains from the Bacillus genus: B. coagulans, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. laterosporus, B. licheniformis, B. mucilaginosus, B. megaterium, B. polymyxa, and B. pumilus . All tested preparations containing bacterial consortia and a preparation with the yeast S. cerevisiae intensified the PAHs degradation more effectively than formulations including only the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica or a mixture of Debaryomyces hansenii and Bacillus . The designed and proposed research will contribute to the development of biotechnological methods – bioremediation by microorganisms that are safe for the human and environment health.

Abstract:The ubiquitous environmental contaminants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), can be aerobically biodegraded. Strategies for biodegradation of PAHs are needed for the persisted character of it in anoxic environments. In current study, we obtained a highly enriched anaerobic, PAHs-degrading co-culture DYM1, from petroleum-polluted soil. DYM1 significantly degrades a range of PAHs in 4 days without supplementary terminal electron acceptors. Co-culture DYM1 is consists of two microorganisms (a degrading bacterium Paracoccus sp. strain PheM1 and an aceticlastic methanogen Methanosaeta concilii.) that utilize different carbon sources in a syntrophic metabolic process of phenanthrene. About 93% of phenanthrene (104.5 μM) has been removed under methanogenic conditions after incubation with co-culture DYM1 for 4 d, and produced 33.68 μmol CH4. Carboxylation, which is catalyzed by UbiD-like carboxylase, was proposed as the initial steps of methanogenic phenanthrene-degrading pathway based upon the detection of 2-phenanthroic acid and 4-phenanthrene acid. Reduction and hydration of the benzene rings were followed by the initial reaction. Hydrated phenanthroic acid metabolites were newly detected and characterized under anaerobic conditions. Anaerobic degradation of phenanthrene without terminal electron acceptor addition not only sheds light on a poorly understood and environmentally relevant biological process, but also supply a novel approach to recover the energy of toxic pollutant in forms of methane.

Abstract:The Central African Copperbelt is a globally important sediment-hosted stratiform copper cluster, with regional Cu–Co deposits controlled by Neoproterozoic rift basin. Ore formation in the Copperbelt involves multiple stages of mineralization during diagenesis, basin inversion, and collisional orogeny. Understanding the depositional environment of ore-hosting rocks is crucial for revealing the geological settings and pre-orogenic ore genesis. This paper presents a biomarker study focusing on the ore-bearing black shale in the Luishia Cu–Co deposit, Democratic Republic of Congo. The research investigates thermal maturity, source, and depositional environment of organic matter through rock organic carbon and pyrolysis analysis, chloroform bitumen “A” group component analysis, as well as saturated hydrocarbon gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The results indicate significant thermal maturation of organic matter in Luishia black shale. Bacteria are identified as the primary source of organic matter followed by red algae and green algae. The sedimentary environment is characterized by a restricted rift basin under shallow marine conditions with a stratified water column. The processes of bacterial sulphate reduction (BSR) and thermochemical sulphate reduction (TSR) significantly influence the mineralization during diagenesis and basin inversion, respectively. Enhanced thermal maturity promotes methane generation which plays a role in reducing anhydrite and subsequently precipitating ore minerals. The findings have important implications for regional exploration strategies.

Abstract:Natural gas generation is the result of organic matter degradation under the effects of biodegradation and thermal degradation. Early Cambrian black shales in the Upper Yangtze Region are rich in organic matter and have shown great shale gas potentiality in recent years. Nevertheless, the enrichment mechanism and distribution of organic matter in these black shales between different sedimentary settings, such as intra-platform basin, slope, and deep basin, are still poorly understood. In this paper, based mainly on elemental geochemistry, a comprehensive study of the marine redox conditions, primary productivity, sedimentation rate, terrigenous input, hydrothermal activity, and water mass restrictions was conducted on the Early Cambrian Niutitang black shale in the Upper Yangtze Region. Our data showed that an intra-platform basin received a higher terrigenous input and that it deposited under more restricted conditions than the slope and deep basin settings. The primary productivity in the slope and deep basin settings was higher than that in the intra-platform basin setting. In the intra-platform basin, the productivity increased from its inner part to its margin. For the slope and deep basin settings, the high paleoproductivity generated large amounts of organic matter and its preservation was synergistically affected by the redox conditions. In contrast to the slope and deep basin, the preservation of organic matter in the inner part of the intra-platform basin was mainly controlled by redox conditions because the paleoproductivity in it was much lower than in the slope and deep basin settings. The intra-platform basin margin was the most favorable area for accumulating organic matter.

Pyrene Biodegradation by Bacterial Consortia Enriched from Coastal and Marine Sediments: Insights into Bacterial Community Structures and Functions

Abstract:As a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), pyrene poses a significant threat to the environment and public health due to its persistence and potential toxicity. Extensive research has been conducted on biodegradation of pyrene, highlighting the crucial need to unravel its degradation mechanisms. Coastal and marine sediments are promising sources for discovering microbial candidates capable of degrading pyrene. In this study, three bacterial consortia, designated as BS, YS, and SS, were enriched from sediments collected from the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, and Liao River estuarine wetland, respectively. The bacterial consortia BS, YS, and SS demonstrated high pyrene degradation efficiencies, achieving 86.61%, 80.39%, and 75.70% degradation at the concentration of 50mg/L within 8 days, respectively. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons revealed Pandoraea, Delftia, and Pseudomonas as the dominant populations in bacterial consortia BS, YS, and SS, respectively, with some species potentially being novel pyrene degraders. Further analysis included identifying pyrene degradation metabolites by LC-Q-TOF-MS (high-performance liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry) and predicting functional genes through PICRUSt (Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved Stats). Based on these results, the metabolic pathways for pyrene degradation by the bacterial consortia were proposed, which predominantly involved the dioxygenation pathway. Overall, these findings should offer valuable bacterial resources for facilitating the bioremediation of PAH-contaminated environments.
