Abstract:Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-coupling reveals a primary contribution from the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As.

Abstract:The probe of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin dynamics in thin films has traditionally relied on the short x-ray pulses based on the magnetic dichroism or diffraction effect. Here, we demonstrate the direct optical probe of ultrafast laser-induced AFM spin dynamics of thin AFM CoO films using time-resolved magnetic linear dichroism effect in reflection geometry. The ultrafast laser excitation of the CoO film leads to the quench of AFM order, manifested as large polarization rotations of the reflected probe light. Far below the Neel temperature (T-N), the quench of the AFM order occurs within 300 fs, which is faster than the lattice thermalization (similar to 1 ps) via electron-lattice scattering. This AFM quench process, however, slows down near T-N, where an additional slower quench process with the time constant longer than 20 ps is emergent. Such an AFM spin dynamics is dramatically different than the transient reflectivity dynamics which is nearly invariant in a wide temperature range across T-N. We attribute the quench of AFM order in CoO to the charge-transfer excitation and thermal effect, but the latter mechanism only plays a significant role near T-N.

Abstract:The half-metallic Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi is a very attractive material for spintronic devices because it exhibits very high tunnelling magnetoresistance ratios. This work reports on a spectroscopic investigation of thin Co$_2$MnSi films as they are used as electrodes in magnetic tunnel junctions. The investigated films exhibit a remanent in-plane magnetisation with a magnetic moment of about 5~$\mu_B$ when saturated, as expected. The low coercive field of only 4~mT indicates soft magnetic behaviour. Magnetic dichroism in emission and absorption was measured at the Co and Mn $2p$ core levels. The photoelectron spectra were excited by circularly polarised hard X-rays with an energy of of 6~keV and taken from the remanently magnetised film. The soft X-ray absorption spectra were taken in an induction field of 4~T. Both methods yielded large dichroism effects. An analysis reveals the localised character of the electrons and magnetic moments attributed to the Mn atoms, whereas the electrons related to the Co atoms contribute an itinerant part to the total magnetic moment.

Abstract:We report on transient reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr measurements from the colossal magnetoresistance compounds La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO), and Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In LCMO and LSMO, an unusually slow (similar to 1 mu s) carrier relaxation component is revealed in the transient reflectivity traces. The component disappears as the transition temperature is approached from below. This slow decay process is attributed to spin-lattice relaxation of carriers in localized states and shows a close relationship with the spectral weight near the Fermi surface. The attribution is further supported by our pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr measurements. In addition to the clear observation of magnetic precessions, a long-lived exponentially decaying background reflects the spin-related relaxation of photoexcited electrons. In contrast to manganites, the temperature dependence of transient reflectivity is negligible, although there is a significant change in transient Kerr rotation in SFMO. Our results show that the dynamics of charge, spin, and lattice are strongly correlated with each other in the manganites, but the spin degree of freedom is thermally insulated from the electron and lattice systems.

Abstract:The direct manipulation of spins via light may provide a path toward ultrafast energy-efficient devices. However, distinguishing the microscopic processes that can occur during ultrafast laser excitation in magnetic alloys is challenging. Here, we study the Heusler compound Co2MnGa, a material that exhibits very strong light-induced spin transfers across the entire M-edge. By combining the element-specificity of extreme ultraviolet high harmonic probes with time-dependent density functional theory, we disentangle the competition between three ultrafast light-induced processes that occur in Co2MnGa: same-site Co-Co spin transfer, intersite Co-Mn spin transfer, and ultrafast spin-flips mediated by spin-orbit coupling. By measuring the dynamic magnetic asymmetry across the entire M-edges of the two magnetic sublattices involved, we uncover the relative dominance of these processes at different probe energy regions and times during the laser pulse. Our combined approach enables a comprehensive microscopic interpretation of laser-induced magnetization dynamics on timescales shorter than 100 fs.

Abstract:By using a multiscale approach based on first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we investigate the electronic structure and magnetization dynamics of an inverse Heusler and a Heusler compound and their alloys, i. e. Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$CoAl and Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$VAl, where $Z$ = Mo, W, Os and Ru, respectively. A signature of the ferrimagnetic ordering of Mn$_{2}$CoAl and Mn$_{2}$VAl Heusler alloys is reflected in the calculated Heisenberg exchange constants. They decay very rapidly with the interatomic distance and have short range, which is a consequence of the existence of the finite gap in the minority spin band. The calculated Gilbert damping parameter of both Mn$_2$CoAl and Mn$_2$VAl is high compared to other half-metals, but interestingly in the particular case of the inverse Mn$_{2}$CoAl alloys and due to the spin-gapless semiconducting property, the damping parameters decrease with the doping concentration in clear contradiction to the general trend. Atomistic spin dynamics simulations predict ultrafast magnetisation switching in Mn$_{2}$CoAl and Mn$_{2}$VAl under the influence of an external magnetic field, starting from a threshold field of $2\text{T}$. Our overall finding extends with Heusler and inverse Heusler alloys, the class of materials that exhibits laser induced magnetic switching.

Abstract:We report on the quasi- particle dynamics of the charge/orbital ordered (COO) and ferromagnetic clusters in the optimally doped manganite, La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) single crystal by time-resolved two-color pump-probe spectroscopy. Pump photons with energies of similar to 1.55 and similar to 0.21 eV were employed in our transient optical spectroscopy to investigate the percolative phase separation including the COO and ferromagnetic clusters from 4 to 480 K. At 1.55 eV, the transient reflectivity change, Delta R/R, at Delta t = 0 shows a similar temperature dependence as that in resistivity and in neutron scattering intensity. We attribute the reflectivity signal to the characteristic optical response of the COO domains. We identify a new temperature scale T* similar to 400K for the clean limit to the formation of COO clusters in LCMO. In contrast, the temperature-dependent amplitude of the transient reflectivity change in the mid-infrared(IR) absorption band (similar to 5 mu m) scales with the volume fraction of the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phases. Our results suggest ultrafast optical spectroscopy to be a powerful probe to reveal the correlated polarons and charge disorders in phase-separated manganites.

Abstract:Although the Co‐based Heusler compounds are predicted to be half‐metals, their sub‐picosecond demagnetization dynamics upon laser excitation show a transition‐metal‐like behavior. Any possible role of ultrafast nonlocal spin transport on the ultrafast demagnetization of half‐metallic Heusler compounds has only been inferred indirectly by time‐resolved magneto‐optical Kerr effect. Here, an ultrafast optically driven spin current traveling from Co2FeSi half metal into an adjacent Pt layer by using terahertz (THz) emission time‐domain spectroscopy (TDS) is demonstrated. By varying the magnetic field and excitation symmetry, the sizable THz generation from Co2FeSi/Pt stack arises from optically induced spin transport across the Co2FeSi/Pt interface in conjunction with spin‐to‐charge current conversion, via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). The chemical ordering, interface roughness and magnetization of the samples become vital to engineer the THz emission properties. The amplitude of THz emission is comparable to that of CoFeB/Pt stack, thereby indicating Co2FeSi as an efficient ultrafast light‐driven spin current injector. Finally, by varying the pumping energy, the contributions are distinguished to the ultrafast spin current from thermalization and optical excitation of majority spins in Heusler alloy. This work illustrates THz emission TDS as a powerful tool to investigate the ultrafast spintronic properties of Heusler alloy/normal‐metal bilayers.

Coherent and incoherent magnons induced by strong ultrafast demagnetization in thin permalloy films

Abstract:Understanding spin dynamics on femto- and picosecond timescales offers new opportunities for faster and more efficient spintronic devices. Here, we experimentally investigate the coherent spin dynamics after ultrashort laser excitation by time-resolved magneto optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) in thin Ni80Fe20 films. We provide a detailed study of the magnetic field and pump fluence dependence of the coherent precessional dynamics. We show that the coherent precession lifetime increases with the applied external magnetic field which cannot be understood by viscous Gilbert damping of the coherent magnons. Instead, it can be explained by nonlinear magnon interactions and by the change in the fraction of incoherent magnons. This interpretation is in agreement with the observed trends of the coherent magnon amplitude and lifetime as a function of the exciting laser fluence. Our results provide a new insight into the magnetization relaxation processes in ferromagnetic thin films, which is of great importance for further spintronic applications.

Abstract:SETTING A study of Serratia marcescens and BCG aerosols. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of relative humidity (RH) on (1) the particle size and (2) sensitivity of 254nm germicidal ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. METHODS We built a RH controlled experimental chamber into which bacteria were aerosolized, exposed to varying amounts of UV irradiance over measured time periods, and quantitatively evaluated for viability. Aerosolized Serratia marcescens and bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) were subject to UV doses ranging from 57-829 microW. sec/cm(2), and sampled with a six-stage Andersen culture plate impactor at RHs ranging from 25-95%. RESULTS Percent survival for both organisms was inversely related to UV dose. Serratia marcescens was more susceptible to UV than BCG under all conditions. More than 95% of the bacterial aerosol particles were 1.1-4.7 microm in aerodynamic diameter, and particles sizes increased from low (25-36%) to high (85-95%) RH. The count median diameter ranged from 1.9-2.6 microm for Serratia marcescens and from 2.2-2.7 microm for BCG as RH increased. For both Serratia marcescens and BCG, resistance to UV increased as RH increased. The UV resistance of both Serratia marcescens and BCG aerosols dramatically increased at RH higher than 85%. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that differences in UV dose, kinds of microorganisms, airborne particle size and RH affect UV susceptibility.

Abstract:Ever since its discovery ultrafast demagnetization has remained one of the most intriguing research areas in magnetism. Here, we demonstrate that in [Co (tCo)/Pd (0.9 nm)]8 multilayers, the characteristic decay time in femtosecond timescale varies non-monotonically with tCo in the range 0.07 nm ≤ tCo ≤ 0.75 nm. Further investigation reveals higher spin fluctuation at higher ratio of electron to Curie temperature to be responsible for this. Microscopic three-temperature modelling unravels a similar trend in the spin–lattice interaction strength, which strongly supports our experimental observation. The knowledge of the femtosecond magnetization decay mechanism in ultrathin ferromagnetic films is unique and important for the advancement of fundamental magnetism besides their potential applications in ultrahigh speed spintronic devices.

Insights into ultrafast demagnetization in pseudo-gap half metals

Abstract:Interest in femtosecond demagnetization experiments was sparked by Bigot's discovery in 1995. These experiments unveil the elementary mechanisms coupling the electrons' temperature to their spin order. Even though first quantitative models describing ultrafast demagnetization have just been published within the past year, new calculations also suggest alternative mechanisms. Simultaneously, the application of fast demagnetization experiments has been demonstrated to provide key insight into technologically important systems such as high spin polarization metals, and consequently there is broad interest in further understanding the physics of these phenomena. To gain new and relevant insights, we perform ultrafast optical pump-probe experiments to characterize the demagnetization processes of highly spin-polarized magnetic thin films on a femtosecond time scale. Previous studies have suggested shifting the Fermi energy into the center of the gap by tuning the number of electrons and thereby to study its influence on spin-flip processes. Here we show that choosing isoelectronic Heusler compounds (Co2MnSi, Co2MnGe and Co2FeAl) allows us to vary the degree of spin polarization between 60% and 86%. We explain this behavior by considering the robustness of the gap against structural disorder. Moreover, we observe that Co-Fe-based pseudo gap materials, such as partially ordered Co-Fe-Ge alloys and also the well-known Co-Fe-B alloys, can reach similar values of the spin polarization. By using the unique features of these metals we vary the number of possible spin-flip channels, which allows us to pinpoint and control the half metals electronic structure and its influence onto the elementary mechanisms of ultrafast demagnetization.

Abstract:Laser-induced spin precession and ultrafast demagnetization were investigated in MgO-capped Co2FeAl (MO-CFA) films. Both the Gilbert damping parameter alpha and the demagnetization time tau(m) monotonically increased with the increasing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy as CFA thickness x was reduced to 0.6 nm. The increase in alpha may be explained by a stronger spin-orbit coupling. The tm of an L2(1) Co2FeAl film is larger than that of thick MO-CFA, but smaller than that of MO-CFA with x <= 0.9 nm, indicating that the restored orbital angular momentum may have a stronger and opposite effect on tau(m) compared to the reduced spin polarization in thin MO-CFA.

Abstract:Magnetization dynamics of Co2FeSi full Heusler alloy films have been investigated by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE). For the samples grown at a substrate temperature (T-s) lower than 350 degrees C, an obvious dual frequency phenomenon is found in the TR-MOKE signals due to the coexistence of a strong main precession mode and a weak additional mode. The amplitude of the additional high frequency mode decreases and becomes undetectable with increasing T-s. On the contrary, the magnetic damping parameter alpha(0) measured at the highest external field of H = 15kOe is as low as 0.004 for low T-s samples, it rises abruptly at T-s > 350 degrees C and even reaches 0.023 at T-s = 480 degrees C in spite of the improved atomic ordering. We attribute the greatly increased magnetic damping to the enhanced two-magnon scattering occurred at grain-grain boundaries. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the spin precession and magnetic damping behaviors of Heusler alloy films, which will be helpful for developing high frequency spintronic devices.

Abstract:Ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced by femtosecond laser pulses have been measured in ferrimagnetic Co0.8Gd0.2, Co0.74Tb0.26, and Co0.86Tb0.14 alloys. Using element sensitivity of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co L3, Tb M5, and Gd M5 edges, we see that the demagnetization dynamics is element dependent. We show that a thermalization time as fast as 280 ± 30 fs is observed for the rare earth in the alloy when the excited-state temperature is below the compensation temperature. It is limited to 500 ± 100 fs when the excited-state temperature is below the Curie temperature (TC). Therefore, for transition-metal rare-earth alloys, we propose that critical spin fluctuations in the vicinity of TC reduce the demagnetization rates of the 4f electrons, whereas far from TC the limited demagnetization rates should be avoided.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic Heusler alloys with low magnetic damping are highly promising materials for magnonic devices, which rely on the excitation and detection of spin waves. Using all-electrical spin-wave spectroscopy we report spin-wave propagation in sputtered ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}({\mathrm{Mn}}_{0.6}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.4})\text{Si}$ Heusler alloy thin films with a thickness of 50 nm. We integrated a nanostructured microwave antenna to locally excite and detect propagating spin waves in a Damon-Eshbach configuration. We estimate the group velocity to be up to 12.0 km/s and we observe spin-wave propagation with a frequency band as broad as 15 GHz. From the experimental frequency dependence of group velocity we calculate the spin-wave dispersion. Our results show that all-electrical measurements are a powerful method for determining the fundamental spin-wave characteristics of Heusler alloys, over a broad and tunable range of frequencies, and with group velocities an order of magnitude higher than in conventional materials.
Laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy reduction in a Co$_{88}$Tb$_{12}$ thin film with stripe domains

Abstract:We use time-resolved x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (tr-XRMS) at the Co M$_{2,3}$- and Tb O$_1$-edges to study ultrafast demagnetization in an amorphous Co$_{88}$Tb$_{12}$ alloy with stripe domains. Combining the femtosecond temporal with nanometer spatial resolution of our experiment, we demonstrate that the equilibrium spin texture of the thin film remains unaltered by the optical pump-pulse on ultrashort timescales ($<$1 ps). However, after $\simeq$ 4 ps, we observe the onset of a significant domain wall broadening, which we attribute to a reduction of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the system, due to energy transfer to the lattice. Static temperature dependent magnetometry measurements combined with analytical modeling of the magnetic structure of the thin film corroborate this interpretation.

Abstract:We study the demagnetization dynamics of the fully compensated half-metallic ferrimagnet Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga. While the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices are both composed of manganese, they exhibit different temperature dependencies due to their differing local environments. The sublattice magnetization dynamics triggered by femtosecond laser pulses are studied to reveal the roles played by the spin and intersublattice exchange. We find a two-step demagnetization process, similar to the well-established case of Gd(FeCo)$_3$, where the two Mn-sublattices have different demagnetization rates. The behaviour is analysed using a four-temperature model, assigning different temperatures to the two manganese spin baths. Even in this strongly exchange-coupled system, the two spin reservoirs have considerably different behaviour. The half-metallic nature and strong exchange coupling of Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga lead to spin angular momentum conservation at much shorter time scales than found for Gd(FeCo)$_3$ which suggests that low-power, sub-picosecond switching of the net moment of Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga is possible.

Abstract:We have investigated the ultrafast laser-induced magnetization and reflectivity dynamics in the Fe3O4 thin film using all-optical pump-probe measurements. The high-quality of our sample is verified by the temperature-dependent static magnetic properties, showing a clear Verwey transition. Although the Fe3O4 is predicted to be a half-metal, the demagnetization process upon laser incident shows a transition-metal-like behavior. The demagnetization characteristic time has been found to be in sub-100 fs (fs) time scale, suggesting the dominant interaction of hole spin-flip processes. The spin relaxation process has been found to be around 600 fs, which is attributed to the electron-phonon coupling in accordance to the observed two electron-phonon coupling modes in reflectivity dynamics. Our results provide new insight into the ultrafast laser-induced spin dynamics in half-metallic ferrimagnet.
