Abstract:Background: Diabetic foot is a serious and often debilitating diabetes complication that poses a significant risk of morbidity and even mortality. However, ensuring good knowledge and good practice of appropriate foot care for patients with diabetes has been frequently neglected in diabetes management. Objectives: This study aimed to assess foot care knowledge and practice in patients with diabetes. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 400 patients with diabetes at Madinah Diabetes Center, Madinah City, Saudi Arabia, in 2023. Sociodemographic, knowledge score, practice of foot care, and diabetes-related data were collected using a valid interview structured questionnaire. The prevalence of good knowledge and practice level was calculated and compared using the studied patients' characteristics using appropriate statistical tests. Results: The prevalence of good knowledge of foot care and its practice was 35% and 27%, respectively. The knowledge level showed statistically significant differences among patients based on their age and diabetes type and duration. Patients who were >50 years (70.1%), had type 2 diabetes (89.5%), and with diabetes duration >10 years (65%) showed significantly better knowledge. Female patients (65.7%) had a higher good practice level compared with male patients (34.3%) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study highlights the insufficient knowledge and inadequate foot care practice among patients with diabetes in the studied population. Educational interventions and targeted strategies are necessary to improve knowledge about the importance of foot care and promote better foot care practices among patients with diabetes.

Abstract:Background: Diabetic foot disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Patients at high risk of developing diabetic foot disease can reduce their risk, however, by practicing appropriate foot self-care behaviours. Despite this fact, and often despite education regarding appropriate foot care, patients frequently engage in risky foot care practices which place them at risk of foot ulceration. Aim: We aimed to assess knowledge of appropriate foot care behaviours in a cohort of Irish patients at high risk of developing diabetic foot disease attending a multidisciplinary foot clinic, and to assess foot self-care practice. We also aimed to determine predictors for suboptimal self-care behaviour. Design: A questionnaire-based cohort study. Methods: A multi-aspect questionnaire was designed by the diabetes foot care team, based on the principles of good foot care and the education provided to patients attending the diabetes podiatry clinic. Results: One hundred forty-three participants with high-risk feet completed a questionnaire exploring foot care knowledge and practice. The responses revealed suboptimal foot care knowledge and practice. Participants frequently engaged in risky foot care practices, and were unable to consistently identify appropriate footwear for high-risk feet. Predictors of good foot care included a history of prior ulceration, podiatry attendance, microvascular complications of diabetes, and longer duration of diabetes. Conclusion: In this cohort of Irish patients with high-risk feet, foot care knowledge and practice varied widely. Participants frequently engaged in high-risk behaviours despite prior education. Improved strategies to impart diabetic foot care advice to patients with diabetes and high-risk feet are urgently required.
Need for education on footcare in diabetic patients in India

Abstract:Objectives: The patient himself plays the crucial role in the prevention of diabetic foot disease and therefore education on foot care is important. In this study, we have evaluated the knowledge of the diabetic subjects regarding the foot problems and the care of feet in order to identify areas that require stress in the education programme. Patients and methods: Two hundred and fifty, consecutive cases of Type 2 diabetes (M:F, 176:74, age 57.2 +/- 9.7 yrs, duration 12.9 +/- 7.9 yrs) were selected for this study from the out-patient department of our hospital. A questionnaire was filled up for each patient by personal interview. The total score was 100 and a score of < 50 was considered as a low score for foot care knowledge. Results: A score of < 50 was obtained in 67.2%. Low score was more common in women (78.5%) than in men (62.5%) (chi 2 = 5.26, P = 0.022). Low scores (< 50) were more common among those with lower level of formal education (chi 2 = 70.0, P < 0.0001), there were more women with low educational status. Significant foot problems like gangrene, foot ulcers were present in 27.2% and low scores were more common among those with these complications (82% vs 62%) (chi 2 = 8.3, P = 0.004). In general the scores on awareness of general foot care principles and basic facts about the foot complications were poor. Most of them (72%) had good knowledge about the right usage of foot wear. There was a trend to have lower scores with poor formal education (chi 2 = 51.1, P < 0.0001) and also with increasing age. There was no correlation between the scores and the number of hospital visits. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that 31.2% of the variations in the scores were explained by the level of education. Conclusions: This study underscores the importance of patient education on foot care principles, especially so, considering the magnitude of the problem of diabetes and the lower levels of literacy and poor socio economic status of many patients in this country.
Foot care behaviours and associated factors among patients with type 2 diabetes: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: As numerous studies highlighted the importance of maintaining proper foot care (FC) behaviours among individuals with diabetes to prevent complications, we sought to assess FC behaviours among patients with diabetes and to identify the factors associated with the practice of diabetic FC. Methods: We used a cross-sectional design and collected data through self-reported questionnaires administered to a sample of 586 patients from five medical centres. We conducted descriptive and inferential analyses to explore the relationships between potential risk and protective factors and FC behaviours. Results: Overall, 429 individuals (73.2%) had good FC behaviours, while 157 (26.8%) displayed poor FC behaviours. Furthermore, we identified eight influencing factors on FC behaviours, including smoking status, the availability of a caregiver, the presence of diabetic foot ulcers, amputation history, FC knowledge, subjective norms in diabetes self-care behaviour, diabetes-related stress, and quality of life index values. The logistic regression analysis showed that current smokers were 60% less likely to practice good FC compared to non-smokers (odds ratio (OR) = 0.40; 95%; confidence interval (CI) = 0.22-0.73). Having a caregiver decreased the likelihood of practicing good FC by 50% (OR = 0.52; 95% CI = 0.33-0.84), while having diabetic foot ulcers doubled it (OR = 2.65; 95% CI = 1.26-5.54). Additionally, more FC knowledge increased the likelihood by 20% (OR = 1.21; 95% CI = 1.10-1.33), and higher diabetes-related stress increased it by 1.03 times (OR = 1.03; 95% CI = 1.02-1.05). Conclusions: Our findings underscore the interplay of various factors influencing FC behaviours among individuals with diabetes and call for targeted interventions and tailored strategies to improve FC practices in this vulnerable population.

Abstract:Background & Aim: Foot ulceration and amputation have increased significantly among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Proper foot care behavior is an important strategy for reducing the risk of diabetes-related foot issues. The current study aimed to assess foot care behavior and its influencing factors, including self-efficacy, foot care knowledge, and social support, among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who have a high-risk diabetic foot in Wenzhou, China. Methods & Materials: This research used a correlational predictive design. In total, 107 participants who were eligible for the study were randomly selected. Five self-reported questionnaires, including the demographic questionnaire, Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale, Foot Care Knowledge questionnaire, Perceived Social Support Scale, and Chinese version of the Nottingham Assessment of Functional Footcare, were utilized. Descriptive statistical and standard multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate data. Results: Approximately 90.7% of participants had poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c≥ 7%), and 95.3% presented with foot deformities. Further, 51.4% of participants reported moderate foot care behavior, and 42.1% had poor foot care behavior. The multiple regression analysis revealed that self-efficacy, foot care knowledge, and social support significantly explained 31.1 % of the variability in foot care behavior. However, self-efficacy could predict foot care behavior (β= .490, p< .001). Conclusion: It is important to improve foot care behavior among patients with type 2 diabetes who have a high-risk diabetic foot. Nursing interventions to enhance foot care behavior should focus on improving self-efficacy and providing foot care education regularly.

Objective: This study assessed the knowledge and practice of diabetic patients towards diabetic foot care and their general understanding of diabetes causes, complications, and treatment. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Aldaraga Clinic Centre, Sudan, with a sample size of 100 diabetic patients. A questionnaire and checklist were used to collect data for this study. The data was analyzed through SPSS Version 16 software. Results: The majority of respondents were females (62%), above 40 years old (66%), married, with a low educational level, and moderate-income (76%). The study revealed that most respondents did not attend any educational program about diabetes, indicating poor or no knowledge about diabetes mellitus. However, respondents had good knowledge of most signs and symptoms of diabetes, with the highest percentage (88%) for extreme thirst. Concerning the knowledge of respondents about complications of diabetes, it was generally poor, except for retinal diseases (70%). Participants' knowledge of signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia was found to be poor at 25%. The study showed that most respondents did not know what diabetes gangrene is. Foot infections were the most dominant cause of hospitalization among diabetic patients, often leading to amputations. Conclusion: Enhancing foot care behaviours in diabetic patients is crucial to reduce diabetic foot ulceration risks. Patient-friendly educational interventions and regular physician reinforcement are urgently needed, including awareness programs, specialized diabetes centres, and health education through mass media to improve foot care practices and prevent complications like amputations. The incidence of depression in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) in a meta-analysis paper found that nearly half of patients with DFUs experienced depression, with the incidence ranging from 26% to 85%. 1 In Sudan, diabetes mellitus is a prevalent medical issue, and diabetic septic foot infection is a severe complication with significant morbidity and mortality. 2 Diabetes is a chronic health problem with preventable consequences. Globally, the number of people with Type 2 diabetes is expected to increase significantly by 2030. In the United States, there are millions of adults with Type 2 diabetes, affecting both men and women. However, in Sudan, the prevalence is more horrible since the DFU prevalence of 18.1%, with a significant association, resulting in a 3.16-fold increase in probability for those living with diabetes for more than ten years, even after adjusting for other risk factors. 3 The incidence rate of foot ulcers and lower extremity amputations is high among diabetic patients, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The economic and emotional impact on patients and their families is substantial. 4 Diabetic septic foot (DSF) is a common problem that can lead to amputation. The management of foot ulceration should focus on infection control, treating peripheral ischemic arteries, addressing abnormal loading pressure, and managing limited joint mobility. Studies have shown that the development and prevalence of DSF range from 1% to 4% and 4% to 10%, respectively. Levels of compliance of self-care practices of diabetes mellitus type 2 patients: a study from a tertiary care hospital of North India

Abstract:Diabetes management strategies are interdependent and comprise of three basic key elements: self-care activities, effective drug treatment, and adequate follow-up for early detection of complications. There is a need to assess the levels of self-care practices among diabetic patients and factors influencing them for developing better educational strategies to address the gaps identified. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the compliance for self-care activities of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, in a tertiary care hospital by using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) scale among 60 patients aged > 18 years. More than 90% of respondents were compliant for not eating high-fat foods, were not smoking, and were monitoring glucose regularly. One third of respondents were not taking proper foot care. After adjusting for confounders, the proportion of individuals who eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables were significantly lower in middle and low socioeconomic status (SES) individuals as compared to high SES (middle SES OR 0.06, 95% CI 0.01–0.39; lower SES OR 0.06, 95% CI 0.01–0.60). Females were less likely to be involved in physical activity-related self-care activities as compared to males (minimum 30 min of physical activity: OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.08–0.92; specific exercise sessions: OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.04–0.52). The proportion of diabetics who follow proper foot care instructions were significantly lower among middle SES as compared to upper SES (checking of feet: OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.01–0.47; inspection of footwear: OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.01–0.48). There is a need to emphasize the importance of diet, physical activity, and foot care during the counseling sessions of diabetes mellitus type 2 patients.

Abstract:Abstract Background Diabetic foot is a global threat to public health, as it can lead to infections and amputations and cause significant pain and economic costs for patients. Diabetic foot patients in northern China have more severe local ulcers, worse prognosis, and longer disease duration. Objective This study assessed the foot risk levels and foot care knowledge and behavior status of people with diabetes with different foot risk levels, and investigated the factors that influence the occurrence of high-risk foot in diabetes. Methods This cross-sectional survey included 410 hospitalized people with diabetes. Demographic and disease-related data and foot risk stratification status were collected using investigator-designed questionnaires. Foot care knowledge and behavior questionnaires were also used. Results Among the 410 participants, a total of 367 cases were classified as high-risk feet, among which 135 cases were rated as grade 1, 202 cases grade 2, and 30 cases grade 3. Foot care knowledge surveys revealed low scores in the areas of shoe and sock selection, foot and footwear examination, and management of foot problems. Foot care behavior surveys showed low scores in the areas of foot and footwear examination, management of foot problems, and foot injury risk behavior. One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in foot care behaviors among patients with different foot risk classifications ( p < 0.05), while no significant differences were observed in foot care knowledge scores. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, history of cerebrovascular disease, and foot care behavior scores were factors influencing the occurrence of high-risk foot in people with diabetes. Conclusion The results of this study showed a high prevalence of high-risk foot in diabetics; The knowledge and behavior of foot care in diabetics with different foot risk levels were both at a moderately low level; There were differences in foot behavior scores among patients with different foot risk classes, but, counter-intuitively, no significant differences in foot care knowledge. The study found that advanced age, history of cerebrovascular disease, and low foot care behavior scores are risk factors for high-risk foot in diabetes. Therefore, it is necessary to screen patients with diabetes for high-risk feet and implement targeted interventions according to the results.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of patients with high risk of diabetes foot in inpatients with diabetes mellitus and their foot care status. Methods One hundred and one patients were included with convenient sampling. Semmes Weistein 5.07/10 monofiliment and 128 Mhz vibration fork were adopted to screen the high risk foot. Diabetes control status questionnaire(CSSD70) and review of medical record were conducted to assess the risk factors, diabetes control including fasting blood glucose and HbA1c and patients current foot care status. Results 86(85.1%) cases out of 101 were with high risk of diabetes foot, and those normal only account for 14.9%. 61(60.4%) cases were with abnormal press sensation and 85(84.2%)cases were with abnormal vibration sensation. The degree of abnormality of press sensation and vibration sensation was positively correlated with HbA1c(r=0.25, r=0.27,P0.01)and negatively correlated with age(r=-0.28,r=-0.40,P0.01). There were no significant difference in CSSD70 score between high risk group and normal group. Conclusions The prevalence of patients with high risk of diabetes foot was high among diabetes inpatients. They had poor knowledge and skills in life style, diabetes treatment, survival skills and disease management. Their foot care status was very worrying. High risk patients' screening, education and management should be enhanced. [

Abstract:Background Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are one of the most common and fatal complications of diabetic patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) that may end with their feet amputation. These complications can be prevented through the adherence of diabetic patients to their diabetes management plan and by educating them about risk factors, complications of diabetic foot, and proper foot care. To develop effective health education programs to educate diabetic patients and caregivers regarding diabetic foot and its effective care, we should first identify gaps in patients' knowledge and perception of diabetic foot and evaluate their practice of foot care. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate knowledge and attitude toward DFUs and the practice of foot care among adult diabetic patients attending Al-Qunfudah Diabetes Center, Saudi Arabia, from October 2022 to March 2023. Methods A total of 403 adult diabetic patients were recruited in this cross-sectional study during their attendance at the diabetes center in Al-Qunfudah district, Saudi Arabia. The study researchers conducted a physical face-to-face interview with each diabetic patient using a validated questionnaire with closed-ended questions to collect their responses regarding their knowledge and attitude toward DFUs and their behavior toward foot care. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 23 (released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). Results Out of 403 diabetics, 50.4% (n = 203) had inadequate knowledge (knowledge score < 80%), 46.4% (n = 187) had negative attitudes (attitude score < 80%) toward DFUs, and the majority could not practice foot care well, with 77.7% (n = 313) giving a practice score less than 80%. Seventy patients (17.4%) self-reported a history of DFUs. Predictors of good knowledge about DFUs among diabetics include age between 30 and 59 years (odds ratio (OR) = 2.942, confidence interval (CI) 95% = 1.695-2.107, p < 0.001), marriage (OR = 3.101, CI 95% = 1.893-5.079, p < 0.001), working (OR = 5.325, CI 95% = 3.019-9.389, p < 0.001), diploma education (OR = 8.205, CI 95% = 3.332-20.203, p < 0.001), managing DM with oral drugs (OR = 2.219, CI 95% = 1.399-3.519, p < 0.001), and having no DFUs (OR = 2.712, CI 95% = 1.557-4.723, p < 0.001). Males were more likely to practice foot care well (OR = 1.925, CI 95% = 1.142-3.245, p = 0.013). Primary education (OR = 3.421, CI 95% = 1.655-7.073, p < 0.001) predicted appropriate foot care. Patients with DM for one to five years (OR = 1.995, CI 95% = 1.139-3.493, p = 0.016) and those on diet and metformin (OR = 2.133, CI 95% = 1.134-4.011, p = 0.019) were expected to have better foot care than other diabetics. Conclusion Diabetic patients in the Al-Qunfudah district of Saudi Arabia had inadequate knowledge and negative attitudes toward DFUs, and their foot care behaviors were inadequate. Furthermore, DFUs were self-reported in around 17% of diabetic patients. Specialized training programs are recommended to enhance knowledge regarding DFUs among diabetics and motivate and train them and caregivers on how to conduct proper foot care. These educational programs should target all diabetics, with an emphasis on those with DFUs, females, non-working patients, individuals who have had DM for a longer time, and illiterate diabetics. To understand the factors behind patients' negative attitudes toward diabetic foot, future qualitative research is required.

Abstract:AIM: To determine knowledge and practice of foot care in people with diabetes.METHODS: A questionnaire was completed by patients in Middlesbrough, South Tees, UK. A knowledge score was calculated and current practice determined. Practices that put patients at risk of developing foot ulcers and barriers to good practice were identified. Patients at high risk of ulceration were compared to those at low risk.RESULTS: The mean knowledge score was 6.5 (S.D. 2.1) out of a possible 11. There was a positive correlation between the score and having received advice on foot care (6.9 versus 5.4, P = 0.001). Deficiencies in knowledge included the inability to sense minor injury to the feet (47.3%), proneness to ulceration (52.4%) and effect of smoking on the circulation (44.5%). 24.6% (20.1-29.2) never visited a chiropodist, 18.5% (14.2-22.7) failed to inspect their feet and 83% (79.1-86.9) did not have their feet measured when they last purchased shoes. Practices that put patients at risk included use of direct forms of heat on the feet and walking barefoot. Barriers to practice of foot care were mainly due to co-morbidity. Those with high risk feet showed a higher (6.8) but not significant knowledge score compared to those at low risk (6.5) and their foot care practise was better.CONCLUSION: The results highlight areas where efforts to improve knowledge and practice may contribute to the prevention of foot ulcers and amputation.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a public health problem andis the leading cause of hospitaladmission, amputation and mortality in diabetic patients. Aim of the study: This study wasconducted to assess relation betweenknowledge, foot self-care and health status for diabeticfoot high-risk patients. Research design: A descriptive exploratory design was utilized wasused in this study. Setting: the study was conducted in diabetic foot outpatient clinic inBeni–Suef university hospital at Beni–Suef city Egypt. Subjects: A purposive sample of 60patients admitted in diabetic foot outpatient clinic. Data Collection Tools: Tools of thestudy consist of four tools, tool (1) Lower limb assessment sheet for diabetic patients (2)Patient’s interview questionnaire sheet (3) Diabetic foot observational checklist (4) healthstatus assessment sheet. Results: (61.2%) of studied patients had satisfactory level of totalknowledge regarding diabetes mellitus. (49.0%) of them had unsatisfactory self-care of thefoot. The study results revealed, that there is statically significant relation between patients’health status and knowledge and no statically significant relation between patients’ healthstatus and diabetic foot self-care. Conclusion: This study concluded that there is staticallysignificant relation between patients’ health status and knowledge and there is no staticallysignificant relation between patients’ health status and diabetic foot selfcare.Recommendation:Diabetic foot programs for high-risk patients, health statusrecommend to be conducted in diabetic foot outpatient clinics by specialized well-trainednurses.

Abstract:Background: Diabetic foot is a foot that exhibits any pathology that result directly from diabetes mellites or any long -term complications of DM which lead to diabetic foot amputation when delaying in treatment. Aim of the study: Was to assess self-care practices of diabetic foot patients at Benha University. Research design: A descriptive research design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: This study was conducted at Diabetic Patient Clinic of Benha University Hospital in Benha City. The sample: A systematic sample of 200 diabetic foot patients over 50 years old. Tools: One tool was used in this study. 1): A structured interviewing questionnaire which consists of four parts. Part (1): Demographic characteristics of diabetic foot patients, Part (2): Medical history of diabetic foot patients. Part (3): Patients ‘knowledge about diabetes Mellitus and diabetic foot. Part (4): Diabetic patients’ reported practices toward diabetic foot self- care. Results: 46.5% of studied patients aged from60<70 years old, 47.5% of them had basic education, and 50% of them were male.52% of studied patients had diabetes mellitus from 1to less than 5 years and 35% of them were visiting The Diabetic Clinic every three weeks Also 49.5% of studied patients had poor total knowledge level, while; 51% of them had satisfactory total reported self-care practices regarding diabetic foot care. Conclusion: There was highly statistically positive correlation between total knowledge of studied patients, their total reported practices regarding care of diabetic foot. Recommendations: Develop health educational program for diabetic foot patients to increase their knowledge and self -care practices regarding diabetic foot.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives. Egypt occupies the 8th rank in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus worldwide. The social and financial burden of diabetes and its complications represents a major health problem in Egypt. Diabetic foot and its consequences (ulcers and amputation) are preventable through good education for both physicians and patients. Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with type 2 diabetes attending diabetes outpatient clinic in Alexandria main university hospital (AMUH). Patients were subjected to history taking, physical examination, and laboratory investigations. Screening for peripheral neuropathy was done using Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI). A pre-tested questionnaire was used to assess the diabetic foot care knowledge and practice in participants. Results. Only 25% and 24% of participants had good diabetic foot care knowledge and practice, respectively. There was a highly significant positive correlation between knowledge and practice in studied group (p<0.001). The presence of microvascular complications leads to a significantly higher knowledge, but not practice. Conclusions. Diabetic foot care knowledge and practice are poor in our community. Foot care knowledge, unlike practice, is increased with the presence of microvascular complications. We should develop effective educational programs for patients and physicians to increase knowledge and practice before the development of complications.
Prevention of Diabetic Foot Ulcer in High Risk Patient: The Role of Internist in Providing Adequate Foot Care

Abstract:ABSTRACT Background and aim The awareness and practice of diabetes foot prevention by internist through routine examination and patient education remains less than optimal. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of care of internist in performing foot care in high-risk patients. Methods A cross sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. Type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects with high-risk foot complication were included in this study. Each subject filled-in a questionnaire investigating whether they had received information about proper foot care practice and whether they have ever had their feet examined by an internist at their present consultation. Multivariate logistic regression were performed. Results 368 patients were recruited, 130 of them (35.3%) treated by endocrinologists. 71.20% patients did not received any information on foot care and 54.08% patients did not received any foot examination. Foot care information was 1.6 times more frequently provided to patient with longer diabetes duration and 2 times more frequently provided to those who had history of diabetic foot ulcer. Meanwhile, foot examination was 1.5 times more frequently provided to those with longer diabetes duration and had a history of Lower Extremity Amputation. Compare to non-endocrinologist internist, endocrinologists tend to provide foot education and perform foot examination 2.2 to 2.5 times more frequently than non-endocrinologists. Conclusion Most of patients with high risk foot problems were not offered adequate foot care. It is necessary to develop strategies to improve the care and awareness among health professionals treating patients with diabetes especially internist.

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the knowledge and behaviours on foot self-care in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; analyse the influential factors, and provide information for the intervention study.Methods: A total of 5961 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from 144 hospitals in China were included in the study. The investigation content included patients' demographic data, foot self-care knowledge and behaviours. The investigation tools were the questionnaires on the general diabetes information, on the foot self-care knowledge, and on the foot self-care behaviours.Results: The foot self-care knowledge was medium and the foot self-care behaviour was poor. The status of knowledge and behaviours were influenced by education, duration of diabetes mellitus, periodic inspection, and education about diabetic complications. Pearson analysis demonstrated that there was positive correlation between knowledge score and behaviour score (r = 0.27, p < 0.001).Conclusions: The status of foot self-care knowledge and behaviours are not optimistic. According to the patients' own characteristics, the theory of knowledge, attitude and practice applies to encouraging patients to go for periodic inspection and education about diabetic complications so as to enhance the knowledge and promote the self-care behaviours. Abstract:Foot complications among diabetic mellitus patients are a major cause of morbidity and death across the world. A large number of Bangladeshis are also affected by this type of diabetes. This study aimed to explore the common foot complications and footwear selection of diabetes mellitus patients in Bangladesh. This study used a questionnaire to conduct empirical research and analyzed the data using statistics. In a survey of 304 diabetes mellitus patients, 36.84% reported peripheral neuropathy, 27.30% foot swelling, and 11.50% foot ulcers. Approximately 58.33% of patients reported at least one of the above complications. Only 14.5% of participants were aware of therapeutic footwear, and half were satisfied with their requirements. The remaining 85.5% of patients were careless about footwear safety. The findings of this study suggested increasing awareness of ergonomically fit footwear to reduce foot complications. Abstract:Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic condition brought on by either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas or inefficient insulin utilization by the body. A hormone called insulin controls blood sugar. Patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes frequently experience diabetes complications, which are also a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Microvascular and macrovascular problems of diabetes are the two main categories, with the former having a significantly higher prevalence than the latter. In contrast to macrovascular problems, which include cardiovascular disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease (PAD), microvascular sequelae include neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy. The occurrence of a foot ulcer coupled with neuropathy, PAD, and infection is known as diabetic foot (DF) syndrome, and it is a primary factor in lower limb amputation. Finally, there are additional diabetes problems that fall outside of the two categories listed before, including birth defects, dental disease, and decreased infection resistance. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the awareness of diabetic patients in the Qassim region about diabetic foot and its complications. Patient and methods This retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2021 and January 2022 among diabetic patients. The patients were contacted through the contact numbers listed in their medical charts at the Diabetic Center in King Saud Hospital in Unaizah and the Diabetes Center in King Fahad Specialist Hospital. The data were collected by sending the link to the targeted patients using the Google Form questionnaire. Results Of the 384 diabetic patients, 51.6% were females, and 28.6% were aged between 18 and 30 years old. A previous history of foot ulcers has been reported by 10.4%. The overall mean score was 11.3 (SD 2.99) out of 20 points, with poor, moderate, and good awareness levels constituting 25.8%, 66.4%, and 7.8%, respectively. Factors associated with increased awareness include younger age, female gender, having no associated chronic disease, and not experiencing soreness on the foot or leg. Conclusion There was modest awareness among the diabetic population regarding diabetes foot care and its complications. Independent significant predictors of increased knowledge include younger age, female gender, having no associated chronic disease, and not experiencing soreness on the foot or leg. Increased diabetic education is vital to improving awareness levels of diabetic foot complications.
Predisposing factors of diabetic foot amputation among the diabetic patients in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract:Background: Diabetes is one of the major health problems in the world. Along with multiple complications, one of those devastating complications, is diabetic foot and it can even lead to limb amputation. The objective of this study to recognize the risk factors for foot amputation among diabetic patients.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital of Lahore. 268 diabetic patients were recruited through a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. After taking informed consent from all patients, data was collected via a self-designed proforma. SPSS version 25 was used to analyze data. Chi-square was applied to identify any association.Results: From the total of 268 patients 72 (26.80%) were advised amputation, whereas, 196 (73.20%) patients were managed conservatively. The correlation between diabetic foot amputation and various factors which included gender (p=0.0001), educational status (p=0.0003), socioeconomic status (p=0.004), diet modification (p=0.002), blood sugar monitoring (p=0.001), life style (p=0.0003), therapy type (p=0.04), compliance with treatment (p=0.001), smoking (p=0.02), hypertension (p=0.004), ischemic heart disease (p=0.03), stroke (p=0.01), peripheral neuropathy (p=0.003), and peripheral arterial disease (p=0.001) was statistically significant, while, the correlation was not significant between diabetic foot amputation and duration of diabetes (p=0.07).Conclusions: In summary, the incidence of foot amputation among diabetic patients is quite high. The factors that lead to foot amputation are male gender, lower educational status, lower socioeconomic status, no diet modification, no blood sugar monitoring, sedentary life style, inappropriate therapy, poor compliance, history of smoking, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, and peripheral arterial disease.
