Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are potentially effective for the removal of antibiotics, yet the inherent process and mechanism of antibiotic removal remain insufficiently elucidated. This study investigated the removals of eight antibiotics (norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, lomefloxacin, ofloxacin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, roxithromycin) from domestic sewage in CWs of different flow types, substrates, plants, and hydraulic loading rates in two seasons. The results showed that the CWs performed efficiently for treating antibiotic contaminated urban wastewater. Flow type deciding redox condition is the domain factor of antibiotic removal through affecting methanogenic degradation. Photolysis is significant in half-substrate systems during summer with exposure to strong sunlight, while adsorption is noteworthy in full-substrate systems during winter with cold weather. Furthermore, plant presence may limit the anaerobic processes of antibiotics via radial oxygen loss.

Abstract:Aquaculture discharge is an important non-point source for antibiotic contamination, yet antibiotic removal from aquaculture wastewater has not been given the necessary attention. Here, nine constructed wetlands (CWs) with different configurations (i.e., substrate, plants, and hydraulic retention time) were prepared by orthogonal test [L 9 (3 3 )], to treat aquaculture wastewater and specifically to evaluate the removal efficiency and mechanism of antibiotics. Consequently, the highest removal percentages of trimethoprim (89 ± 3%), sulfamethoxazole (61 ± 7%), sulfamonomethoxine (20 ± 8%), sulfamethazine (20 ± 9%), and sulfadiazine (12 ± 13%) were achieved via collocating optimal configuration of CWs. Based on the analysis of both the orthogonal test and correlation, microbial degradation was the major removal pathway of antibiotics, particularly anaerobic processes. Further, 16S rRNA sequencing analysis presented that some specific substrate, plants, and hydraulic retention time might promote antibiotic removal via changing dominant and functional microbes by deciding oxygen concentrations and redox conditions in CWs. In which, anaerobic bacteria (e.g., Lacihabitans and Ilumatobacter ) were regarded as the key microorganisms in the genus level for removing antibiotics by CWs through redundancy analysis (RDA), while aerobic bacteria (e.g., Hydrogenophaga and Pseudomonas ) were likely to significantly inhibit the anaerobic process of antibiotic degradation.

Abstract:With the development of technology, two new pollutants, antibiotics as well as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), have become global environmental and health problems. Various antibiotics and ARGs have been extensively detected in sewage. Compared with traditional wastewater treatment plants, constructed wetlands (CWs) show the following advantages: low energy consumption and low operation and management costs as well as being very efficient at removing antibiotics and ARGs. This study reviewed the factors affecting the efficiency of CWs in their elimination of antibiotics and ARGs from wastewater. Overall, the vertical-flow subsurface CWs showed the highest removal efficiencies for antibiotics (>60%). In addition, CWs with plants and substrate materials such as zeolite and brick pellets were highly efficient at removing antibiotics (73%–99.15%). Up-flow subsurface CWs were better at removing ARGs (63.76% to 96.83%). In addition, the presence of plants promoted the elimination of ARGs from wastewater in CWs. Moreover, microorganisms in CWs have a great impact on the removal of ARGs, that CWs remove ARGs from wastewater by directly ieliminating microorganisms. However, further research is necessary to further understand the mechanisms of the elimination of antibiotics and ARGs from wastewater within CWs.
Removal of selected sulfonamides and sulfonamide resistance genes from wastewater in full-scale constructed wetlands

Abstract:Sulfonamides are high-consumption antibiotics that reach the aquatic environment. The threat related to their presence in wastewater and the environment is not only associated with their antibacterial properties, but also with risk of the spread of drug resistance in bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of eight commonly used sulfonamides, sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1-3) and integrase genes intI1-3 in five full-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) differing in design (including hybrid systems) and in the source of wastewater (agricultural drainage, domestic sewage/surface runoff, and animal runs runoff in a zoo). The CWs were located in low-urbanized areas in Poland and in Czechia. No sulfonamides were detected in the CW treating agricultural tile drainage water. In the other four systems, four sulfonamide compounds were detected. Sulfamethoxazole exhibited the highest concentration in those four CWs and its highest was 12,603.23 ± 1000.66 ng/L in a CW treating a mixture of domestic sewage and surface runoff. Despite the high removal efficiencies of sulfamethoxazole in the tested CWs (86 %-99 %), it was still detected in the treated wastewater. The sul1 genes occurred in all samples of raw and treated wastewater and their abundance did not change significantly after the treatment process and it was, predominantly, at the level 105 gene copies numbers/mL. Noteworthy, sul2 genes were only found in the influents, and sul3 were not detected. The sulfonamides can be removed in CWs, but their elimination is not complete. However, hybrid CWs treating sewage were superior in decreasing the relative abundance of genes and the concentration of SMX. CWs may play a role in the dissemination of sulfonamide resistance genes of the sul1 type and other determinants of drug resistance, such as the intI1 gene, in the environment, however, the magnitude of this phenomenon is a matter of further research.

Abstract:Given the increasing pressure on water bodies, it is imperative to explore sustainable methodologies for wastewater treatment and reuse. The simultaneous presence of multiples contaminants in complex wastewater, such as the liquid effluents from biogas plants, can compromise biological treatment effectiveness for reclaiming water. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were established as low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment technologies to treat the liquid fraction of digestate from municipal organic waste with metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes, to allow its reuse in irrigation. Twelve lab-scale planted constructed wetlands were assembled with gravel, light expanded clay aggregate and sand, testing four different treating conditions (liquid digestate spiked with oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine, or ofloxacin, at 100 μg/ L, or without dosing) during 3 months. Physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nutrients, metals, and antibiotics), the microbial communities dynamics (through 16S high-throughput sequencing) and antibiotic resistance genes removal (qPCR) were monitored in influents and effluents. Systems removed 85.8%–96.9% of organic matter (as COD), over 98.1% of ammonium and phosphate ions, and 69.3%–99.4% of nitrate and nitrite ions, with no significant differences between the presence or absence of antibiotics. Removal of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr exceeded 82% in all treatment cycles. The treatment also removed oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine and ofloxacin over 99%, and decreased intl1, tetA, tetW , sul1 and qnrS gene copies. Nonetheless, after 3 months of ofloxacin dosing, qnrS gene started being detected. Removal processes relied on high HRT (14 days) and various mechanisms including sorption, biodegradation, and precipitation. Microbial community diversity in liquid digestate changed significantly after treatment in constructed wetlands with a decrease in the initial Firmicutes dominance, but with no clear effect of antibiotics on the microbial community structure. Removals above 85% and 94% were observed for Streptococcus and Clostridium, respectively. Results suggest that vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were a suitable technology for treating the liquid digestate to reuse it in irrigation agricultural systems, contributing to the circular bioeconomy concept. However, a more profound understanding of effective wastewater treatment strategies is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance genes dissemination.

Abstract:The extensive use of antibiotics leads to their frequent detection in the environment, posing potential threats to public health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been widely applied in wastewater treatment and can efficiently remove antibiotics. However, the removal of antibiotics in the CWs is still in a "black box", and the information about the potential risks of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) occurrence in CWs is limited. In the present study, the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), as well ARGs occurrence in vertical down-up flow constructed wetlands (VDUF-CWs) were assessed. The results indicated that VDUF-CWs exhibited great removal efficiency for OTC (84.3 ± 3.5 %) and SMZ (77.7 ± 3.9 %). Based on conservation of mass, the contributions of different removal pathways (i.e., microbial degradation, plant absorption, photodegradation, and substrate adsorption) to antibiotic removal were calculated. Of which, microbial degradation was found to be the dominant route in removing OTC and SMZ with the contribution of 58.52 ± 2.34 % and 65.13 ± 3.72 % respectively, followed by photodegradation (18.47 ± 3.04 % and 8.22 ± 3.94 %), plant absorption (9.01 ± 1.28 % and 7.75 ± 4.07 %) and substrate adsorption (2.08 ± 0.03 % and 1.73 ± 0.02 %). Notably, tetA , tetC , tetW , sulI , and sulII genes were detected in layer samples, and the relative abundances of the sul and tet genes were boosted with the extension of operation days, indicating that VDUF-CWs allow a risk of ARGs spread and threatening public health. The present study provided a deeper insight into the mechanism of antibiotic removal in CWs, but further explorations are required to develop the effective control strategies for eliminating ARGs from CWs.

Abstract:An integrated constructed wetland (ICW) with six subsystems has been operated for six years (60,000 Ton day −1 ) and exhibited strong stability and high efficiency for removing conventional pollutants in tail water. This study was aimed to characterize the removal efficiency of antibiotics in relation to bacterial community structure and composition in this integrated constructed wetland. Water samples were taken from different ICW sites in two distinct seasons (i.e. winter and summer). The results showed that concentrations of antibiotics in ICW decreased from influent to effluent with varying removal rates among the different antibiotics (quinolones, ulfonamides and macrolides). The pyrosequencing of 16S ribosomal DNA revealed that the composition of dominant phyla could be grouped into four bacterial clusters and the key discriminant phyla, family or genera from each cluster was strongly associated with the specific physicochemical parameters of water or type of antibiotics. Members of the key phyla (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Parcubacteria, and Actinobacteria) appeared to play an important role in antibiotics removal. In general, both the concentration of antibiotics and physicochemical parameters of water shaped the bacterial communities. These results improve our understanding of the interactions between antibiotics or water physiochemical parameters and bacterial communities in the integrated constructed wetland.
Effects of Advanced Treatment Systems on the Removal of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Wastewater Treatment Plants from Hangzhou, China.

Abstract:This study aimed at quantifying the concentration and removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in three municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) employing different advanced treatment systems [biological aerated filter, constructed wetland, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection]. The concentrations of tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetW, sulI, sulII, intI1, and 16S rDNA genes were examined in wastewater and biosolid samples. In municipal WWTPs, ARG reductions of 1-3 orders of magnitude were observed, and no difference was found among the three municipal WWTPs with different treatment processes (p > 0.05). In advanced treatment systems, 1-3 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in constructed wetlands, 0.6-1.2 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in the biological aerated filter, but no apparent decrease by UV disinfection was observed. A significant difference was found between constructed wetlands and biological filter (p < 0.05) and between constructed wetlands and UV disinfection (p < 0.05). In the constructed wetlands, significant correlations were observed in the removal of ARGs and 16S rDNA genes (R(2) = 0.391-0.866; p < 0.05). Constructed wetlands not only have the comparable ARG removal values with WWTP (p > 0.05) but also have the advantage in ARG relative abundance removal, and it should be given priority to be an advanced treatment system for further ARG attenuation from WWTP.
Elimination of veterinary antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes from swine wastewater in the vertical flow constructed wetlands

Abstract:This paper investigated the efficiency of two vertical flow constructed wetlands characterized by volcanic (CW1) and zeolite (CW2) respectively, at removing three common antibiotics (ciprofloxacin HCl, oxytetracycline HCl, and sulfamethazine) and tetracycline resistance (tet) genes (tetM, tetO, and tetW) from swine wastewater. The result indicated that the two systems could significantly reduce the wastewater antibiotics content, and elimination rates were in the following sequence: oxytetracycline HCl>ciprofloxacin HCl>sulfamethazine. The zeolite-medium system was superior to that of the volcanic-medium system vis-à-vis removal, perhaps because of the differing pH values and average pore sizes of the respective media. A higher concentration of antibiotics accumulated in the soil than in the media and vegetation, indicating that soil plays the main role in antibiotics removal from wastewater in vertical flow constructed wetlands. The characteristics of the wetland medium may also affect the antibiotic resistance gene removal capability of the system; the total absolute abundances of three tet genes and of 16S rRNA were reduced by 50% in CW1, and by almost one order of magnitude in CW2. However, the relative abundances of target tet genes tended to increase following CW1 treatment.

Abstract:Analyzing the temporal dynamics of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the functional community could contribute to the regulation and optimization of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation to achieve better antibiotics and ARGs removal performances during different seasons. However, there is little research in this area. Therefore, in this study, samples were collected from the influent, activated sludge (AS), and permeate of the membrane bioreactor (MBR) in a WWTP located in Beijing, China, biweekly over 13 months, and then analyzed systematically. The removal efficiency for all detected antibiotics through biodegradation and adsorption was 59.25 ± 2.79%, with the highest rate of 64.79 ± 4.68% observed in summer, indicating that the higher temperature in summer may promote biodegradation in MBR. In contrast, the elimination of antibiotics through microfiltration was negligible and unfavorable, with negative overall removal rates. However, a positive rejection rate of 9.48 ± 8.92% was only observed in winter, indicating that a colder temperature might lead to better, but still limited, antibiotics rejection. Sulfonamides (SAs) were more likely to impose a selective pressure on their corresponding ARGs. However, due to the degradability of tetracyclines (TCs) and potential selection of ARGs in wastewater before entering WWTP, there were still TC resistances with non-detectable TCs. Significantly negative relationships were observed between the relative abundance of nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira) and the concentrations of certain antibiotic classes, indicating that nitrifying bacteria could be involved in the co-metabolic biodegradation of certain antibiotics through enzyme catalyzation during nitrification.
Quality of parental consent in a Ugandan malaria study.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES We surveyed Ugandan parents who enrolled their children in a randomized pediatric malaria treatment trial to evaluate the parents' levels of understanding about the treatment trial and the quality of the parents' consents to allow their children to participate in the study. METHODS We conducted 347 interviews immediately following enrollment at 4 Ugandan sites. RESULTS A majority (78%) of the parents, most of whom where mothers (86%) had at most a primary school education. Of the participating mothers, a substantial percentage reported that they remembered being told about the study's purpose (77%), the required number of visits (88%), the risks involved (61%), treatment allocation (84%), and their ability to discontinue their children's participation (64%). In addition, most reported knowing the trial's purpose (80%) and the required number of visits (78%); however, only 18% could name possible side effects from the drugs being administered, and only 19% knew that children would not all be administered identical treatments. Ninety-four percent reported that they made the enrollment decision themselves, but 58% said they felt pressure to participate because of their child's illness, and 15% said they felt some type of pressure to participate from others; 41% reported knowing that they did not have to participate. CONCLUSIONS The consent Ugandan parents provided to allow their children to participate in the malaria study was of mixed quality. Parents understood many of the study details, but they were not very aware of the risks involved or of randomization. Many parents felt that they could not have refused to participate because their child was sick and they either did not know or did not believe that their child would receive treatment outside of the study. Our results indicate that further debate is needed about informed consent in treatment studies of emergent illnesses in children.

Abstract:<p>Sewage treatment plant (STP) is the major point source of antibiotic contamination, yet the advanced treatment of antibiotic polluted STP effluent has not been given necessary attention. This study is conducted to evaluate the removal efficiency, kinetic, and behavior of sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides antibiotics from STP effluent in a hybrid constructed wetland (HCW) and a layered biological filter (LBF) at different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs). The results showed that the removal efficiency of antibiotics in all the HLRs was ranked as follow: quinolones of HCW (70–95%) > macrolides of HCW (58–77%) > tetracyclines of both systems (59–67%) > quinolones of LBF (28–64%) > macrolides of LBF (13–25%) > sulfonamides of both systems (<0%). The optimal HLR is 1.0 m/day for quinolones and 2.0 m/day for tetracyclines-macrolides in the HCW, and 6.4 m/day for quinolones-tetracyclines in the LBF, respectively. Although HCW performed better on the removal of most antibiotics, LBF exhibited stronger total loading toleration and higher removal loading ability to antibiotics. Among them, quinolones were markedly removed by multiple effect of substrate adsorption, microbial anaerobic degradation, and photolysis in the HCW (planted), and by filter sorption and interception in the LBF (unplanted); adsorption is the dominant elimination approach for tetracyclines in both systems; plant uptake plays a significant role on the removal of macrolides in the HCW.</p>

Biodegradation of sulfonamides in both oxic and anoxic zones of vertical flow constructed wetland and the potential degraders

Abstract:The pollution of wastewater with antibiotics and antibiotics resistance genes has attracted public concerns about ecosystem and global health. Swine wastewater can contain high concentrations of antibiotics, especially sulfonamides, even after full-scale wastewater treatment. In this study, mesocosm-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VF-CWs) were applied to abate nutrients and antibiotics in swine wastewater containing sulfonamides. VF-CWs performed well in the removal of both nutrients and antibiotics. Sulfonamides did not influence total organic carbon (TOC) and total phosphorus (TP) removal, and even slightly enhanced NH4+-N removal. High removal efficiencies (26.42-84.05%) were achieved for sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfamethazine (SMZ). Together with lab-scale sorption and biodegradation experiments, microbial degradation was found to be the most important removal mechanism for sulfonamides in VF-CWs. Sulfonamides addition increased bacterial alpha-diversity and changed microbial community structure. Moreover, antibiotics promoted antibiotic-resistant or -degrading bacteria. Bacillus, Geobacter and other seven genera were correlated with sulfonamides reduction under either aerobic or anaerobic condition. In summary, VF-CW is a suitable alternative for swine wastewater treatment, and biodegradation plays the key role in sulfonamides abatement. Main findings of the work. This was the first work to combine bacterial community analysis with microcosm experiments to uncover the major removal mechanism of sulfonamides in constructed wetlands.

Abstract:With the global concern on the role of wastewater treatment technologies in manifesting the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), it has now become imperative to analyze the emerging technologies for handling them. This study assesses the efficiency of two deep constructed wetlands (CWs) receiving partially treated sewage from a residential complex and a hospital designed for the removal of organics and pathogens. These systems were further analyzed for the presence of major ARB to identify the role of CWs in mitigating antibiotic resistance among microbial communities. The bacterial community responsible for metabolic conversions was analyzed by metagenomic sequencing. Finally, the efficiencies of deep CWs were analyzed for the removal of specific bacteria resistant to three antibiotics—piperacillin, colistin (polymixin E), and cefoperazone. The overall removal of extended spectrum beta lactamase producers and carbapenemase producers was also studied. Our results indicate that CWs offer decent BOD and COD removal efficiencies of 74.04–78.71% and 53.85–64.37% respectively. However, a zero-order reaction between loading rate and removal rate was obtained after loading rate of 170 g/m<sup>2</sup>.day indicating the organic loading capacity of the system. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence of bacteria with diverse metabolic potentials for substrate conversion. Removal of fecal coliforms was high in the CWs, but the most interesting observation was the attenuation in ARB, which was found to be comparable to, or even better, than the reported values from conventional moving bed bioreactor. This observation may be attributed to the high retention times offered by CWs compared to that of conventional systems making them an attractive future alternative for treating domestic as well as hospital sewage for emerging pollutants.

Abstract:Four pilot-scale constructed wetlands (free water surface, SF; horizontal subsurface flow, HSF; vertical subsurface flows with different water level, VSF-L and VSF-H) were operated to assess their ability to remove sulfamethazine (SMZ) and tetracycline (TC) from wastewaters, and to investigate the abundance level of corresponding resistance genes (sulI, sulII, tetM, tetW and tetO) in the CWs. The results indicated that CWs could significantly reduce the concentration of antibiotics in wastewater, and the mass removal rate range of SMZ and TC were respectively 11%-95% and 85%-95% in the four systems on the basis of hydraulic equilibrium; further relatively high removal rate was observed in VSF with low water level. Seasonal condition had a significant effect on SMZ removal in the CWs (especially SMZ in SF), but TC removal in VSFs were not considered to have statistically significant differences in winter and summer. At the end period, the relative abundances of target genes in the CWs showed obvious increases compared to initial levels, ranging from 2.98 x 10(-5) to 1.27 x 10(-1) for sul genes and 4.68 x 10(-6) to 1.54 x 10(-1) for tet genes after treatment, and those abundances showed close relation to both characteristic of wastewater and configuration of CWs. Antibiotic resistomes and ecological risk elimination in field-scale constructed wetland revealed by integrated metagenomics and metatranscriptomics

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are identified as significant ecological systems for the potential control of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. However, the precise mechanisms governing removal, persistence, expression, and associated risks of ARGs during wetland treatment remain poorly understood. In this study, the distribution, mobility, expression, and hosts of ARGs in water, sediments, and plants of a field-scale CW and its parallel natural river were systematically investigated through metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches. Results showed that both the abundance and diversity of ARGs in water gradually decreased along the way of CW, reaching a final abundance removal rate of 72.28 % in the effluent. Source tracking analysis indicted that the reduction of ARGs in water was mainly achieved by the dynamic accumulation of ARGs in sediments and plants of the CW. Proteobacteria were identified as primary hosts for ARGs, particularly in sediments and plants during CW treatment. Moreover, although ESKAPE pathogens carrying multiple ARGs persisted in all media throughout the CW treatment, ARG expression levels and risk of water were also significantly decreased after CW treatment. Collectively, our comprehensive multi-omics study would enhance the understanding of ARG removal by CWs, offering insights for controlling antimicrobial resistance in wastewater treatment system.
Saturated constructed wetlands for the remediation of cylindrospermopsin and microcystin-LR: Plants, microbes, and biodegradation pathways

Abstract:Harmful cyanobacterial blooms will be more intense and frequent in the future, contaminating surface waters with cyanotoxins and posing a threat to communities heavily reliant on surface water usage for crop irrigation. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are proposed to ensure safe crop irrigation, but more research is needed before implementation. The present study operated 28 mesocosms in continuous mode mimicking horizontal sub-surface flow CWs. Mesocosms were fed with synthetic lake water and spiked periodically with two cyanotoxins, microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and cylindrospermopsin (CYN), at environmentally relevant cyanotoxins concentrations (10 μg L-1). The influence of various design factors, including plant species, porous media, and seasonality, was explored. The mesocosms achieved maximum MC-LR and CYN mass removal rates of 95 % and 98 %, respectively. CYN removal is reported for the first time in CWs mimicking horizontal sub-surface flow CWs. Planted mesocosms consistently outperformed unplanted mesocosms, with Phragmites australis exhibiting superior cyanotoxin mass removal compared to Juncus effusus. Considering evapotranspiration, J. effusus yielded the least cyanotoxin-concentrated effluent due to the lower water losses in comparison with P. australis. Using the P-kC* model, different scaling-up scenarios for future piloting were calculated and discussed. Additionally, bacterial community structure was analyzed through correlation matrices and differential taxa analyses, offering valuable insights into their removal of cyanotoxins. Nevertheless, attempts to validate microcystin-LR biotransformation via the known mlrA gene degradation pathway were unfruitful, indicating alternative enzymatic degradation pathways occurring in such complex CW systems. Further investigation into the precise molecular mechanisms of removal and the identification of transformation products is needed for the comprehensive understanding of cyanotoxin mitigation in CW. This study points towards the feasibility of horizontal sub-surface flow CWs to be employed to control cyanotoxins in irrigation or recreational waters.
Roles of substrates in removing antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands: A review

Abstract:Antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging pollutants in wastewater that pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a cost-effective technology for eliminating these pollutants through substrates, plants, and microorganisms. Detailed reviews of the roles of CW substrates on antibiotic and ARG removal and recent progress in the field are lacking. This paper reviews the mechanisms influencing antibiotic and ARG (intracellular and extracellular) removal in CWs, and natural, biomass, chemical, modified, industrial, novel, and combined substrates on their removal efficiencies. Generally, substrates remove antibiotics and ARGs mainly through adsorption, biodegradation, chemical oxidation, and filtration. Other mechanisms, such as photolysis, may also contribute to removal. Natural substrates (e.g., gravel, zeolite) are more frequently employed than other types of substrates. The removal performance of antibiotics and intracellular ARGs by zeolite was better than that of gravel through enhanced substrate adsorption, filtration, and biodegradation processes. Moreover, Mn ore showed promising high capability to remove high concentration of antibiotics through various removal pathways. In addition, combined substrates of soil/sand/gravel and other substrates further facilitate antibiotic removal. Future research is suggested to explore the mechanisms of competitive adsorption and redox-controlled biodegradation, investigate the effect of Fe/Mn oxides on the removal of antibiotics and ARGs via chemical oxidation, evaluate the removal of extracellular ARGs by CWs with different substrates, and investigate the effect of substrates on removal of antibiotics and ARGs in full-scale CWs.

Effect of Plant Physiological Characteristics on the Removal of Conventional and Emerging Pollutants from Aquaculture Wastewater by Constructed Wetlands

Abstract:Four horizontal subsurface flow pilot-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) named as S1, S2, M1 and M2 were constructed to treat aquaculture wastewater. And two different plant species (Iris pseudacorus and Phragmites australis) were cultivated in single and mixed planting patterns in these four CWs. The removal rate of conventional pollutants (nutrient and organic compounds), antibiotics including enrofloxacin (ENR), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were evaluated among those CWs. The total nitrogen and NH4+-N removal rates of all CWs were 73.24%-91.46% and 61.20%-92.27%, respectively. CWs with mixed planting patterns, such as M1 (planted with Iris pseudacorus at the forepart and Phragmites australis at the back) and M2 (alternate cultivation with Iris pseudacorus and Phragmites australis) showed better performances than CWs planted with single plant species, such as S1 (Iris pseudacorus) and S2 (Phragmites australis). However, S1 and S2 exhibited higher removal efficiencies for emerging contaminants: S1 had removal efficiencies of 77.64%, 68.70%, and 58.21% for ENR, SMZ, and total ARGs, respectively, and S2 had removal efficiencies of 81.11%, 64.94%, and 56.26% for ENR, SMZ, and total ARGs, respectively. Compared with single planting, the dominant genera in mixed planting exhibited lower relative abundance in anaerobes and higher percent of bacteria associated with nitrogen metabolism, indicating that different plant physiological characteristics affected the microbial community structures of the CWs.
