Abstract:Seaports affect the environment through various functions related to cargo handling, connectivity to the sea and land transport networks, and industrial, logistics, and distribution activities. The purpose of this study was to perform a preliminary assessment of the contents of dioxins and microplastics in the bottom sediments of the Port of Gdynia. The identification of plastic particles was carried out on the basis of visual and microscopic observations, as well as spectroscopy analysis. Fragments and fibres were dominant when categorised by particle shape, while transparent, white, and black particles dominated when categorised by colour. The predominant polymer types identified polyolefins and their derivatives. These findings suggest that low-density plastics are present in seabed sediments, probably as a result of biofouling. Samples were also tested for the presence of dioxins. In the sediment surface layer, the highest concentrations were obtained for octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (5.54–962 ng/kg d.m.), which has low toxicity. The most toxic congener (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) was present in very low concentrations (0.19–0.32 ng/kg s.m.). The values of the toxicity coefficient ranged from 0.01 to 9.77 ng/kg s.m. The results showed that in the studied bottom zones in Gdynia Port, the analysed pollutants do not cause a high ecological risk and do not require permanent monitoring.

Sources and historical record of tin and butyl-tin species in a Mediterranean bay (Toulon Bay, France)

Abstract:Concentrations of inorganic tin (Sn(inorg)), tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were measured in surface sediments and in two cores from the Toulon Bay, hosting the major French military harbour. Anticipating planned dredging, the aim of the present work is to map and evaluate for the first time the recent and historic contamination of these sediments by inorganic and organic Sn species derived from antifouling paints used for various naval domains including military, trade, tourism and leisure. Tin and butyl-Sn concentrations in the bay varied strongly (4 orders of magnitude), depending on the site, showing maximum values near the shipyards. The concentrations of total Sn (1.3-112 μg g(-1)), TBT (<0.5-2,700 ng g(-1)), DBT (<0.5-1,800 ng g(-1)) and MBT (0.5-1,000 ng g(-1)) generally decreased towards the open sea, i.e. as a function of both distance from the presumed main source and bottom currents. Progressive degradation state of the butyl-Sn species according to the same spatial scheme and the enrichment factors support the scenario of a strongly polluted bay with exportation of polluted sediment to the open Mediterranean. Low degradation and the historical records of butyl-Sn species in two (210)Pb-dated sediment cores, representative of the Northern Bay, are consistent with the relatively recent use of TBT by military shipyards and confirm maximum pollution during the 1970s, which will persist in the anoxic sediments for several centuries. The results show that (a) degradation kinetics of butyl-Sn species depend on environmental conditions, (b) the final degradation product Sn(inorgBT) is by far the dominant species after 10-12 half-life periods and (c) using recent data to reliably assess former TBT contamination requires the use of a modified butyl-Sn degradation index BDI(mod). Resuspension of extremely contaminated subsurface sediments by the scheduled dredging will probably result in mobilization of important amounts of butyl-Sn species.
Butyltin Contamination in Fishing Port Sediments after the Ban of Tributyltin Antifouling Paint: A Case of Qianzhen Fishing Port in Taiwan

Abstract:This study investigated the concentrations of monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) in the sediments of the Qianzhen Fishing Port (Taiwan) in 2020. Further, the pollution status, composition, and potential ecotoxicity of BTs were evaluated. This case study provides a reference for the benefits of the ban of TBT-based antifouling paint to date. Results showed that the total butyltin (ΣBTs, sum of TBT, DBT, and MBT) concentrations measured in the sediments of the Qianzhen Fishing Port ranged between 14.2–807 ngSn·g−1 dw, with an average of 356 ± 305 ngSn·g−1 dw. TBT was the most dominant species, with an average concentration of 303 ± 287 ngSn·g−1 dw. This average TBT concentration is about 4.3 times lower than in 2003, showing the progress of gradual degradation of TBT in the sediments. Still, the degradation is rather slow, with a half-life of about 8.09 years. An analysis of the effects of TBT on organisms in the sediments of the Qianzhen Fishing Port was carried out according to the TBT toxicity guidelines of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the assessment class criterion for imposex (ACCI) of the Oslo and Paris Commission (OSPAR). The results showed that TBT levels in 80% of the sediments may pose negative effects on sensitive gastropods, and half of the sediments may even have an impact on gastropod reproduction. These show that marine life is still affected and threatened by TBT compounds, despite the decline of TBT concentrations since the ban of TBT-containing antifouling paints on ships in 2008. Therefore, it is necessary to continue paying attention to the changes of TBT concentrations and their potential ecological risks in the marine environment, and to formulate TBT management plans and strategies to mitigate their impacts in marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Purpose To assess correlation between attenuation measurements of incidental findings in abdominal second generation dual-energy computed tomography (CT) on true noncontrast (TNC) and virtual noncontrast (VNC) images. Materials and Methods Sixty-three patients underwent arterial dual-energy CT (Somatom Definition Flash, Siemens; pitch factor, 0.75–1.0; gantry rotation time, 0.28 seconds) after endovascular aneurysm repair, consisting of a TNC single energy CT scan (collimation, 128 × 0.6 mm; 120 kVp) and a dual-energy arterial phase scan (collimation, 32 × 0.6 mm, 140 and 100 kVp; blended, 120 kVp data set). Attenuation measurements in Hounsfield units (HU) of liver parenchyma and incidental findings like renal and hepatic cysts and adrenal masses on TNC and VNC images were done by drawing regions of interest. Statistical analysis was performed by paired t test and Pearson correlation. Results Incidental findings were detected in 56 (89%) patients. There was excellent correlation for both renal (n = 40) and hepatic cysts (n = 12) as well as adrenal masses (n = 6) with a Pearson correlation of 0.896, 0.800, and 0.945, respectively, and mean attenuation values on TNC and VNC images of 10.6 HU ± 12.8 versus 5.1 HU ± 17.5 (attenuation value range from −8.8 to 59.1 HU vs −11.8 to 73.4 HU), 6.4 HU ± 5.8 versus 6.3 HU ± 4.6 (attenuation value range from 2.0 to 16.2 HU vs −3.0 to 15.9 HU), and 12.8 HU ± 11.2 versus 12.4 HU ± 10.2 (attenuation value range from −2.3 to 27.5 HU vs −2.2 to 23.6 HU), respectively. As proof of principle, liver parenchyma measurements also showed excellent correlation between TNC and VNC (n = 40) images with a Pearson correlation of 0.839 and mean attenuation values on TNC and VNC images of 47.2 HU ± 10.5 versus 43.8 HU ± 8.7 (attenuation value range from 21.9 to 60.2 HU vs 4.5 to 65.3 HU). Conclusions In conclusion, attenuation measurements of incidental findings like renal cysts or adrenal masses on TNC and VNC images derived from second generation dual-energy CT scans show excellent correlation providing considerable dose savings, favorable for future application in clinical routine.

Abstract:Current vaccines used for the prevention of brucellosis are ineffective in inducing protective immunity in animals that are chronically infected with Brucella abortus, such as elk. Using a gene discovery approach, in vivo-induced antigen technology (IVIAT) on B. abortus, we previously identified ten loci that encode products up-regulated during infection in elk and consequently may play a role in virulence. In our present study, five of the loci (D15, 0187, VirJ, Mdh, AfuA) were selected for further characterization and compared with three additional antigens with virulence potential (Hia, PrpA, MltA). All eight genes were PCR-amplified from B. abortus and cloned into E. coli. The recombinant products were then expressed, purified, adjuvanted, and delivered subcutaneously to BALB/c mice. After primary immunization and two boosts, mice were challenged i.p. with 5×104 CFU of B. abortus strain 19. Spleens from challenged animals were harvested and bacterial loads determined by colony count at various time points. While vaccination with four of the eight individual proteins appeared to have some effect on clearance kinetics, mice vaccinated with recombinant Mdh displayed the most significant reduction in bacterial colonization. Furthermore, mice immunized with Mdh maintained higher levels of IFN-γ in spleens compared to other treatment groups. Collectively, our in vivo data gathered from the S19 murine colonization model suggest that vaccination with at least three of the IVIAT antigens conferred an enhanced ability of the host to respond to infection, reinforcing the utility of this methodology for the identification of potential vaccine candidates against brucellosis. Mechanisms for immunity to one protein, Mdh, require further in vitro exploration and evaluation against wild-type B. abortus challenge in mice, as well as other hosts. Additional studies are being undertaken to clarify the role of Mdh and other IVI antigens in B. abortus virulence and induction of protective immunity.
Organotins in North Sea brown shrimp (Crangon crangon L.) after implementation of the TBT ban

Abstract:The organotin (OT) compounds tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) are potent biocides that have been used ubiquitously in antifouling paints and pesticides since the mid-1970s. These biocides are extremely toxic to marine life, particularly marine gastropod populations. The European Union therefore took measures to reduce the use of TBT-based antifouling paints on ships and ultimately banned these paints in 2003. Despite sufficient data on OT concentrations in marine gastropods, data are scarce for other species such as the North Sea brown shrimp (Crangon crangon), a dominant crustacean species in North Sea inshore benthic communities. The present study provides the first spatial overview of OT concentrations in North Sea brown shrimp. We have compared these data with historical concentrations in shrimp as well as with sediment concentrations. We have also addressed the effect on the shrimp stock and any human health risks associated with the OT concentrations found. TBT and TPhT in shrimp tail muscle ranged from 4 to 124 and from 1 to 24 μg kg(-1) DW, respectively. High levels are accumulated in estuarine areas and are clearly related with sediment concentrations (biota-sediment accumulation factor ~10). Levels have decreased approximately 10-fold since the ban took effect, coinciding with a recovery of the shrimp stock after 30 years of gradual regression. Furthermore, the OT levels found in brown shrimp no longer present a human health risk.

Abstract:Organotin compounds are persistent pollutants and are considered chemicals of high environmental concern. In the present study, the distribution and degradation of tributyltin were evaluated in field sediments and through an ex situ experiment. For this, sediment samples from two locations were analysed: Luis Piedrabuena Harbour, with higher maritime traffic, and Cerro Avanzado, which receives less impact from anthropogenic activities. The results indicated that pollution levels at Luis Piedrabuena Harbour have decreased compared with studies performed 9 years ago for the same area. On the contrary, traces of organotin compounds have been found for the first time at Cerro Avanzado. Moreover, the butyltin degradation index indicated that organotin compounds undergo an advanced degradation process in the collected samples at both sites. Ex situ experiments revealed a limited capacity of sediments to retain tributyltin, and suggested an active role of bioturbation activity in the degradation of these compounds. In addition, visualisation using chemometric techniques (principal components analysis) allowed a simpler analysis of two sediment characteristics: the degree of contamination and the degradation levels of organotin compounds.

Abstract:Organotin compounds (OTCs) are a category of persistent toxic substances with endocrine disrupting effects and may pose a risk to aquatic organisms and human health via water. This study collected 78 surface water samples from the drinking water source in the upper Yangtze River Estuary from July 2018 to November 2019. Out of the nine OTC targets, tributyltin (TBT), dimethyltin (DMT), trimethyltin (TMT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) were detected from more than 50% of the water samples, with cumulative concentrations of OTCs ranging from 42.5 ± 54.0 to 421 ± 176 ng Sn L −1 . The composition and concentrations of OTCs in the stormy months were different from those in other months. The concentrations of OTCs with the ebbing tide exceeded those in the flooding tide and increased when the flooding tide transitioned to the ebbing tide. A pulsed trend in concentrations of OTCs in river water was evident due to the impact of rainfall runoff and tidal currents. Identified sources of OTCs included ship antifouling paints, agricultural pesticides, and plastic waste. TBT in water sources poses a low risk to human health and a risk to the ecosystem, particularly during the stormy months.

Abstract:In this work, a simple, sensitive and affordable analytical method for the simultaneous determination of nine organotin compounds (butyltins, phenyltins and methyltins) in seawater using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography-pulsed flame photometric detection was developed and validated. The performance of three different SPE cartridges (Envi C18, Oasis HLB and Oasis MCX) and three elution solvents of different polarity (hexane, methanol and acetonitrile) was evaluated. The extraction parameters, such as solvent volume, presence of complexing and ion-pairing reagents, sample volume and pH and breakthrough volume, were also investigated. Tributyltin, as the organotin compound of special interest, was efficiently extracted using any of the cartridges and solvents tested. However, the simultaneous extraction of all nine organotin compounds was the most efficient using reversed-phase Envi C18 cartridge and 0.1% (w/v) tropolone in methanol as eluent. The optimised method resulted in good recovery, precision and linearity for all compounds, particularly for tri- and disubstituted species. Method detection limits ranged from 0.22 to 1.27 ng(Sn) L−1 for butyltins, 0.37 to 4.91 ng(Sn) L−1 for phenyltins and 0.45 to 1.16 ng(Sn) L−1 for methyltins. The accuracy of butyltins determination was further verified by the comparison with purchased derivatised standards. The developed method was successfully applied to the environmental samples.

Abstract:Organotin compounds (OTs) have been used as biocides in antifouling paints and agriculture. The IMO introduced a global ban on the use of OTs in antifouling systems in 2001 due to their high toxicity. However, OTs have still been detected in the environment and pose a threat to the ecosystem. Several research groups have summarized the analytical methods, environmental fate, biochemistry, reproductive toxicity and mechanisms of actions of OTs. Here, we reviewed the developmental toxicity of OTs in various organisms such as sea urchin, ascidian, mussel, and fish. The differences in sensitivity to OT exposure exist not only in different species but also at different stages in the same species. Though some hypotheses have been proposed to explain the developmental toxicity of OTs, the solid evidences are greatly in need.

Abstract:A baseline survey of trace metals and organic pollutants in bivalves from the coastal areas of the Yellow Sea (China) showed the the concentrations of Cd and Pb in the bivalves from more than 85 and 73%, respectively, of the total sites (30 sites in all) exceeded the low limits of the national quality standards for marine organisms. At three sites, the contents of Cd in three species were even higher than the median limit, and a similar case with Pb occurred at another site. The tissue concentrations of As at four sites and of Hg at one site were above the low and the median limits, respectively, of the quality standards. At 43% of all sites, the levels of petroleum hydrocarbons were higher than the low limit of the quality standards, and the tissue concentrations at two sites even went beyond the median limit at one site and the high limit at the other. The concentrations of phthalate esters and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the collected bivalves were not high, as shown by peak values of 305 and 302 ng/g, respectively. The contents of polychlorinated biphenyls for all the species were much lower than the low limit of the quality standards. The compositional properties and isomeric ratios of PAHs indicated various pyrolytic procedures as the dominant origins. The sites with higher tissue contents of DDT and its metabolites (DDTs) over the low or the median quality limit were located mainly in the South Yellow Sea. The fractions and specific ratios of DDTs suggested that new inputs of DDT existed at two sites in the North Yellow Sea, and the potential sources involved technical DDT, technical dicofol, and their mixture.
The zooplankton community of Baltic Sea ports: diversity and seasonal dynamics

Abstract:In this study, we investigated zooplankton composition and seasonal dynamics, as well as the influence of selected environmental factors on the zooplankton community in three ports on the Polish Baltic coast: Władysławowo, Gdynia and Gdańsk. Our aim was to determine whether harbours’ heavy traffic, chemical pollution and physical disturbances affect the zooplankton community, and whether new nonindigenous planktonic species occur in these habitats. Forty three zooplankton taxa were found in all three ports; however, it is important to note that no new nonindigenous species were observed in the port basins. The most influential environmental factors affecting the zooplankton community were: seawater temperature (17% of explained zooplankton variability) and transparency (4%), which were related to seasonal changes. Acartia spp. (although of different development stages) was the dominant taxon during the study, and the examined ports/seasons differed in the presence and proportions of less abundant taxa: the autumn and winter assemblages were dominated by Acartia spp. nauplii, the spring assemblage by numerous Polychaeta larvae, while Cirripedia nauplii and early development stages of Eurytemora affinis were particularly abundant in summer. In addition, changes in salinity (2% explained variability) had a particular impact on the zooplankton community and especially on the assemblage of Gdańsk Port, which was influenced by freshwater inflow from the Motława and Dead Vistula rivers. Our study has clearly shown that, despite severe physical and chemical disturbances in all studied ports, the composition and seasonal dynamics of the zooplankton community were similar to those of the Gulf of Gdańsk outside the ports.

Reduced Prevalence of Oral Human Papillomavirus (HPV) 4 Years after Bivalent HPV Vaccination in a Randomized Clinical Trial in Costa Rica

Abstract:Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, particularly with type 16, causes a growing fraction of oropharyngeal cancers, whose incidence is increasing, mainly in developed countries. In a double-blind controlled trial conducted to investigate vaccine efficacy (VE) of the bivalent HPV 16/18 vaccine against cervical infections and lesions, we estimated VE against prevalent oral HPV infections 4 years after vaccination. Methods and Findings A total of 7,466 women 18–25 years old were randomized (1∶1) to receive the HPV16/18 vaccine or hepatitis A vaccine as control. At the final blinded 4-year study visit, 5,840 participants provided oral specimens (91·9% of eligible women) to evaluate VE against oral infections. Our primary analysis evaluated prevalent oral HPV infection among all vaccinated women with oral and cervical HPV results. Corresponding VE against prevalent cervical HPV16/18 infection was calculated for comparison. Oral prevalence of identifiable mucosal HPV was relatively low (1·7%). Approximately four years after vaccination, there were 15 prevalent HPV16/18 infections in the control group and one in the vaccine group, for an estimated VE of 93·3% (95% CI = 63% to 100%). Corresponding efficacy against prevalent cervical HPV16/18 infection for the same cohort at the same visit was 72·0% (95% CI = 63% to 79%) (p versus oral VE = 0·04). There was no statistically significant protection against other oral HPV infections, though power was limited for these analyses. Conclusions HPV prevalence four years after vaccination with the ASO4-adjuvanted HPV16/18 vaccine was much lower among women in the vaccine arm compared to the control arm, suggesting that the vaccine affords strong protection against oral HPV16/18 infection, with potentially important implications for prevention of increasingly common HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer. Abstract:The objective of this study is to determine microhabitat preferences of benthic species occurring in epilithic (living on stones), epipsammic (growing on sand), epipelic (growing on mud) and epiphytic (living on seagrass) assemblages of the shallows of the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). The study material was collected from 19 sites along the Gdynia–Sopot coastal zone, including the Port of Gdynia. Most of the identified diatom taxa were observed in two or three microhabitats. However, diatom species living in only one type of microhabitat and those occurring in all analyzed microhabitats were also recorded. Autecological preferences of the identified diatoms indicate organic pollution of the coastal zone of Gdynia and Sopot. However, a higher frequency of α-mesosaprobionts and polysaprobionts indicates an increase in organic pollution in the Port of Gdynia and Marina Sopot, which is associated with intense port activity and large tourist traffic.

Added Value of Water Column Spatiotemporal Monitoring to Assess Variability of Trace Metal Elements and Organotin Compounds in Mediterranean Harbours

Abstract:Marinas are semi-enclosed environments characterised by reduced hydrodynamic energy, high sedimentation rates, and reduced oxygen levels. The ongoing development of activities and infrastructure construction are leading to deterioration in the quality of coastal aquatic environments, creating environmental risks. Trace metal elements (TMEs) and organotins are significant contaminants, prompting this study to evaluate the added value of spatiotemporal monitoring compared to one-time sediment assessments. Two Mediterranean harbours, Port Camargue (PC) and Port Carnon (C), differing in morphology and size, were monitored for a year with regular water sampling, focusing on TMEs and organotins. Sediment contamination, notably in the technical zone, revealed concentrations of Cu (309 and 1210 mg kg−1 for C and PC, respectively), Zn (242 and 425 mg kg−1 for C and PC, respectively), and tributyltin (TBT) (198 and 4678 μg (Sn) kg−1 for C and PC, respectively) surpassing the effect range medium (ERM), while other marina stations generally stayed below this threshold. Spatiotemporal water monitoring highlighted concentrations above environmental quality standards (EQS) at all stations of the larger marina. This exceedance was systematic for Cu and Zn in all samples, ranging respectively between 2.54 and 37.56 μg (Sn) L−1 and 0.63 and 33.48 μg (Sn) L−1. A notable temporal dynamic for TBT and Cu was also observed. Conversely, the open marina, connected to the open sea, rarely exhibited concentrations above EQS in water, despite sediment concentrations occasionally exceeding ERM values. This underscores that risk assessment in these ecosystems cannot rely solely on sediment characterisation.

Abstract:mu Aquaculture industries supply half of the global production, leading to an increasing concern about health risk of the aquaculture products because of widespread distribution of heavy metals in the environment. Considering high dependence of toxicity and bioaccumulation of one metal not merely upon total content but mainly upon its chemical forms, recent investigations into risk assessment of aquaculture products based on total contents of heavy metals may be unreasonable and unfair. In this study, we conducted reasonable assessment to bioaccumulation and health risk of aquaculture fish and crustacean collected from eight aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province of East China in terms of chemical forms of two model heavy metals (Sn(II), Pb(II), four organotin compounds, trimethyl lead -TML and triethyl lead -TEL). Although all metal compounds were presented below 0.2-4.1 mu g kg(-1) in aquatic food, they were at moderate contents in environmental matrices following an order of sediment > feedstuff > aquatic food > water for most of the target compounds (i.e. 54-376 mu g kg(-1) Pb(II) in sediment, 14-94 mu g kg(-1) Pb(II) in feedstuff and organotin compounds at pg L-1 levels in water), indicating feedstuff as an important exposure source apart from water adsorption. Bioaccumulation factors, biota-sediment accumulation factors and biomagnification factors demonstrated low bioaccumulation probability although the bioaccumulation level followed an order of organotin and organolead > inorganic forms > total metal. In addition, estimated daily intakes, target hazard quotients and cancer risk demonstrated no health risk for all tin compounds and no carcinogenic risks for all lead compounds but moderate non-carcinogenic risks for TML and TEL. Overall, the accumulation level and health risk were in a closer relationship with the chemical forms of Sn and Pb than their total contents, demonstrating a high necessity to risk assessment in terms of chemical forms.
Assessment of the effects of dredging on metal levels in port waters using DGT passive samplers and spot sampling

Abstract:Aiming at assessing the effect of dredging activities on the levels of metals in Bilbao Port (northern Spain), dissolved and labile metal concentrations in the water were concurrently measured, before, during, and after dredging activities by spot sampling and Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGTs) passive samplers, respectively. Most of the dissolved metal results were below the quantification limits (Cd, <0.06-0.26 μg/L; Co, <5 μg/L; Cu, <5-15 μg/L; Fe, <10-48 μg/L; Mn, <10-22 μg/L; Ni, <2.6-7 μg/L; Pb, <0.39-0.8 μg/L; Zn, <9-24 μg/L). In contrast, DGT results for all sampling times and stations were obtained (Cd, 0.02-0.12 μg/L; Co, 0.08-0.15 μg/L; Cu, 0.5-2.8 μg/L; Fe, 1.0-3.6 μg/L; Mn, 4.7-23.5 μg/L; Ni, 0.5-0.9 μg/L; Pb, 0.15-0.28 μg/L; Zn, 2.6-7.2 μg/L), enabling to determine those metals affected by dredging. Only labile-Pb concentration surpassed momentarily the DGT-Environmental Quality Standard, enabling to rule out biological effects on biota. DGTs are a promising technique for facilitating decision-making during dredging operations.
The assessment of environmental risk related to the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in bottom sediments of the Odra River estuary (SW Baltic Sea)

Abstract:The occurrence of 130 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in sediments collected from 70 sampling sites in the Odra River estuary (SW Baltic Sea) was investigated. The highest concentration levels of the compounds were found in the vicinity of effluent discharge from two main Szczecin wastewater treatment plants: "Pomorzany" and "Zdroje", and nearby the seaport and shipyard. The highest environmental risks (RQ > 1) were observed for pseudoephedrine (RQ = 14.0), clindamycin (RQ = 7.3), nalidixic acid (RQ = 3.8), carbamazepine (RQ = 1.8), fexofenadine (RQ = 1.4), propranolol (RQ = 1.1), and thiabendazole (RQ = 1.1). RQ for each compound varied depending on the sampling sites. High environmental risk was observed in 30 sampling sites for clindamycin, 22 sampling sites for pseudoephedrine, 19 sampling sites for nalidixic acid, 4 sampling sites for carbamazepine, and 3 sampling sites for fexofenadine. The medium environmental risk (0.1 < RQ < 1) was observed for 16 compounds: amisulpride, amitriptyline, amlodipine, atropine, bisoprolol, chlorpromazine, lincomycin, metoprolol, mirtazapine, moclobemide, ofloxacin, oxazepam, tiapride, tolperisone, verapamil, and xylometazoline. Due to the scarcity of toxicological data related to benthic organisms, only an approximate assessment of the environmental risk of PhACs is possible. Nevertheless, the compounds with medium and high risk should be considered as pollutants of high environmental concern whose occurrence in the environment should remain under close scrutiny.
