Abstract:Background: Parenting style refers to the attitudes and behaviors of parents toward their children and an emotional environment in which the parents’ behaviors are expressed. Behavioral problems including externalizing and internalizing problems are amongst the most common mental health issues. Thus, to prevent the development of depression, it is necessary to understand the parenting styles. Objective: To determine the parenting style of parents of depressed adolescents. Study Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: Child & Adolescent Unit, Institute of Psychiatry, Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi from 31st January to 31st July 2020. Methodology: One hundred and fifty adolescents were enrolled. The presence of depression in adolescent patients was assessed by using the Hamilton Scale for Depression (HAM-D). For parenting style, the adolescent patients were asked to answer the Parental Authority Questionnaire. Results: Mean age was 15.90±2.82 years. 53 (35.3%) were male adolescents and 97 (64.7%) were female adolescents. Twenty two (14.7%), 75 (50%) and 53 (35.3%) patients had mild, moderate and severe depression. Eighty five (56.7%), 50 (33.3%) and 15 (10%) had authoritarian, permissive and authoritative parenting style respectively. Conclusion: The study reveals strong relation between depression and impaired parenting and emphasizes that parents should have warm and nurturing relationship with their children as it provides protection against the development of depression in adolescents. Abstract:Parenting style is one of the exogenous factors, participating both in the etiology of psychopathology and in the healthy development of a child. Four main parenting styles, investigated so far, which evoke researchers interest most frequently, are: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive (liberal) loving and permissive uninvolved style. Research conducted in different countries has allowed us to describe connections between applying particular upbringing models and the occurrence of depression, eating disorders, addictions or violence. It has been evidenced that liberal- unloving parenting style, based on little control, and lack of emotional support, is positively associated with aggressive behavior. Parenting models based on excessive control and emotional coldness increase the risk of depression and substance abuse in children and adolescent, whereas authoritative parenting style applied by both parents minimalizes the risk of depression, suicidal tendencies and is also negatively correlated with substance abuse, bulimia and anorexia nervosa. Scientific reports indicate cross-cultural differences in young people’s perception of their parent’s style. For example, uninvolved parenting style was associated with higher depressiveness in Asian females than in African-American. Our paper presents a review of investigations on parenting styles and their results, conducted in different times and often in different cultures. The presented data allows us to formulate general conclusions and recommendations concerning parenting methods which may minimize the risk of psychopathology in youth. Authoritative style, consisting in high control combined with expression of emotional warmth, seems to be the most advantageous for the child’s development.
Parental Psychological Control and Adolescent Problem Behaviors: The Role of Depressive Symptoms

Abstract:Parental psychological control has consistently been linked to greater engagement in problem behaviors among adolescents, including over-eating behaviors, under-eating behaviors, risky cyber behaviors, and substance use. Previous research has suggested that child characteristics, such as temperament, may moderate this association. However, little research has examined characteristics of the adolescent that may place them at greater risk for experiencing such problem behaviors as a result of psychologically controlling parenting. Therefore, the current study examined the role of adolescents’ depressive symptoms as a risk factor (moderator) for the association between parental psychological control and adolescent problem behaviors. Participants included 161 adolescents (Mage = 14.42, SD = 1.73; 80.7% Caucasian; 59.6% female) living in a University city in a Mid-Atlantic state. Participants completed survey questionnaires about parental psychological control, problematic eating behaviors, risky cyber behaviors, substance use, and depressive symptoms. Results indicated that psychological control was significantly and positively associated with under-eating behaviors. Psychological control was also found to be associated positively with risky cyber behaviors and substance use, but only for adolescents who reported greater depressive symptoms. The findings provide support for the role of depressive symptoms as a risk factor for the associations between psychological control and problem behaviors among adolescents.

A Twin Study on Influential Factors of Adolescent Depressive Symptoms

Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of genetic and environmental factors on adolescents depressive symptoms. Methods The depressive mood were investigated in 107 twin pairs from Chongqing (aged from 11 to 18 years old) using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionaire (PSDQ), Family Stresses Questionnaire (FSQ), Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale 2nd Edition Chinese Version (FACES II-CV) and Stressful Life Event (SLE) were applied to assess their environment factors. The blood samples were collected to identify zygosity of twins. Structural equation model was performed to evaluate the effects of the additive genetic factors (A), shared envi?ronment factors (C) and individual specific environmental factors (E) on the adolescents depressive mood. Results The scores of depressive mood were negatively correlated with father’s education level (r=-0.15, P=0.03), mother’s educa?tion level (r=-0.17, P=0.01), scores of the authoritative-parenting-style (r=-0.18, P<0.01), scores of the family adaptabil? ity (r=-0.27, P<0.01) and family cohesion (r=-0.20, P<0.01). There were significantly positively correlation between de?pressive mood and family stresses scores (r=0.14, P=0.04). The scores of adolescents depressive mood were not signifi?cantly correlated with stress life events (P>0.05). The effects of A and E on adolescents depressive symptoms were 0.37 (95%CI:0.14~0.57) and 0.63 (95%CI:0.43~0.86), respectively. Conclusion The authoritative-parenting-style and fami?ly adaptability are negatively correlated with depressive mood. Family stresses are positively correlated with depressive mood. Adolescents depressive mood is influenced by genetic factors and, to a greater extent, specific environmental factors.

Abstract:Globally, fourteen percent adolescents suffer from mental health issues. Among the many contributing factors to mental health problems, parenting is considered to have a significant effect on both the physical and psychological health of adolescents. This study aimed to assess depression, anxiety, stress, and self-esteem among adolescents and their relationship with parenting style. A community-based cross-sectional study with multistage proportionate sampling was conducted among 583 school-going adolescents from September 2022 to March 2023 in Bheemdatt Municipality, Kanchanpur, Nepal. This study used the previously validated Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Parenting Style and Dimension Questionnaire to assess the status and relationships. Variables were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model, and a p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among adolescents was found to be 37.39% (95% CI: 33.46 to 41.32), 42.19% (95% CI: 38.18 to 46.19), and 24.69% (95% CI: 21.18 to 28.19), respectively. Likewise, the mean self-esteem score among adolescents was found to be 22.26 ± 3.56. The authoritative parenting style was positively associated with DAS, while the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles were negatively associated with DAS and positively associated with self-esteem. Parent’s age, parent’s education, social support, and bullying, showed strong effects on the research outcomes. These findings highlight the crucial role of parental involvement and support in shaping adolescent mental health, underscoring the need for interventions that encourage positive parenting practices to improve mental health outcomes for adolescents. It is highly recommended that school-based programs focus on raising awareness of mental health issues and offer interventions such as stress management and student counseling. There is a pressing need to effectively monitor and enforce anti-bullying policies within educational settings.

Abstract:Background Negative parenting style as a risk factors of depression has been defined in the previous researches. However, the underlying mechanism between negative parenting style and depression was still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of self-esteem and the moderating role of perceived social support in the association between negative parenting style and depression among adolescents. Methods A total of 14,724 Chinese adolescents were asked to complete the questionnaires including Parenting Style scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Self-esteem scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item scale. Mediation and moderation analyses were carried out in SPSS 25.0 macro PROCESS. Results Self-esteem mediated the relationship between negative parenting styles and adolescent depression (β = 0.113, SE = 0.004, p < 0.001). Perceived social support moderated the direct effect of negative parenting style on depression (β = −0.076, SE = 0.009, p < 0.001). Moreover, perceived social support moderated the indirect effect of negative parenting style on self-esteem (β = −0.023, SE = 0.007, p < 0.001) and the indirect effect of self-esteem on depression (β = 0.070, SE = 0.009, p < 0.001) in the moderated mediation model. Limitations Cross-sectional research design was used in the study. All measures were based on participant self-report. Conclusion This study reveals the underlying mechanism with regard to the influence of negative parenting style on depression through self-esteem and perceived social support. Findings provide a theoretical basis and practical implications for prevention and intervention programs to protect adolescents' mental health.

Abstract:Guided by Beck’s cognitive model of depression, this study examined the mediating role of negative self-cognition in the association between harsh parenting and adolescent depression and whether peer acceptance moderated this indirect relationship. Eight hundred and fifty-nine seventh to ninth graders (379 girls and 480 boys, mean age = 13.58 years) completed questionnaires on negative self-cognition and depression. Their parents reported on harsh parenting and their peers assessed peer acceptance for each student. Results indicated that beyond the direct effect of harsh parenting on adolescent depression, harsh parenting was also indirectly and positively associated with adolescent depression via negative self-cognition. Furthermore, peer acceptance could compromise the indirect effect of harsh parenting on adolescent depression through buffering the effect of negative self-cognition on adolescent depression. This study promoted our understanding concerning the potential mechanisms underlying the association between harsh parenting and adolescent depression.

Abstract:Based on interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory, family systems theory, and psychological inflexibility theory, this study aimed to examine the mediating roles of a protective factor (self-esteem) and a risk factor (psychological inflexibility) on the influence of parenting style on adolescent mental health. A sample of Chinese adolescents ( n = 916, 46% male, mean age = 14.44 years, SD = 1.84 years) completed the Short Egna Minnen Barndoms Uppfostran, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Depression Subscale of the Youth Self-Report. Results show that the self-esteem and psychological inflexibility play a chain mediating role in the relationship between parenting style and adolescent mental health. Specifically, parental emotional warmth had a positive effect on adolescent mental health through the chain mediating effects of self-esteem and psychological inflexibility. Parental rejection and parental over-protection had negative effects on adolescent mental health by lowering self-esteem but increasing psychological inflexibility. These results provide further guidance in the prevention of and intervention in adolescent mental health problems.

Abstract:Introduction Framed by attachment and cognitive theories, the current meta‐analysis tested the direct and indirect links among parenting dimensions (parental support, authoritative control, psychological control, and behavioral control), self‐esteem, and depressive symptoms for children and adolescents. Methods Based on 53 studies, and 74 independent samples, the present study used One‐Stage Meta‐analytic Structural Equation Modeling (OSMASEM) to investigate these links, including testing a mediation effect by self‐esteem between parental support‐, authoritative control‐, psychological control‐, behavioral control‐, and depressive symptoms. It also tested for potential moderation effects by several variables. Results The evidence indicated that parental support (β = .29), authoritative control (β = .23), and behavioral control (β = .07) are positive correlates of self‐esteem, while psychological control (β = −.26) is a negative one. It also found that self‐esteem was negatively associated with depressive symptoms (β range: −.49 to −.53). Furthermore, parental support (β = −0.14), authoritative control (β = −0.10), and behavioral control (β = −0.05) are negative correlates of depressive symptoms, while psychological control is a positive correlate (β = .11). OSMASEM also provided evidence that parental support, authoritative control, psychological control, and behavioral control are indirectly associated with depressive symptoms, via self‐esteem. Conclusion Parenting dimensions are associated with depressive symptoms both directly and indirectly. That is, self‐esteem partially mediates the relationships between parental support, authoritative control, psychological control, and behavioral control with depressive symptoms. Furthermore, OSMASEM moderator tests provided evidence of several significant moderators, including age, sex, parenting measurement, and self‐esteem measurement.

Effect of Parenting and Peer Stressors on Cognitive Vulnerability and Risk for Depression among Youth

Abstract:Parenting behaviors influence clinical depression among youth, but little is known about the developmental processes that may account for this association. This study investigated whether parenting is associated with the onset of clinical depression and depressive symptoms through negative cognitive style, particularly under conditions of high exposure to stressors, in a community sample of children and adolescents (N = 275; 59% girls). Observational methods were used to assess positive and negative parenting during a laboratory social-evaluative stressor task. Depressive symptoms and clinical depressive episodes were repeatedly assessed over an 18-month prospective follow-up period. Results supported a conditional indirect effect in which low levels of observed positive parenting during a youth stressor task were indirectly associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing an episode of depression and worsening depressive symptoms over the course of the study through youth negative cognitive style, but only for youth who also experienced a high number of peer stressors. These findings elucidate mechanisms through which problematic parenting may contribute to risk for the development of clinical depression during the transition into and across adolescence. Implications for depression interventions are discussed.
Association between parental educational involvement and adolescent depressive symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Adolescents in their school-age period undergo rapid changes in various aspects, such as physiological development, academic pressure, and interpersonal relationships, constitute a high-risk group for depression. Parental educational involvement, as a critical family variable, influences not only children's academic achievement but also their psychological well-being. However, previous research has shown significant discrepancies regarding the relationship between parental educational involvement and adolescent depressive symptoms. Methods: To elucidate the overall strength of the association between parental educational involvement and adolescent depressive symptoms, this study systematically searched Web of Science, Medline, PubMed, CNKI, and other Chinese and English databases. A meta-analysis was conducted on 22 selected studies encompassing 36 effect sizes and involving 390,094 participants. Results: The results revealed a moderate negative correlation between parental educational involvement and adolescent depressive symptoms (r = -0.200, 95% CI [-0.26, -0.14]). Additionally, the relationship between parental educational involvement and adolescent depressive symptoms was found to be moderated by factors such as adolescent age, grade level and the reporter of parental educational involvement. However, it was not influenced by the female ratio or cultural background. Conclusions: This study offers the inaugural comprehensive assessment of the relationship between parental educational involvement and adolescent depressive symptoms, with variations observed across different ages, grade levels, and reporter of parental educational involvement.

Abstract:Home environment and parent's personality are crucial for good mental health of the children and adolescents. The broad objective of the study was to examine the relationships between home environment, parental care, parent's personality and mental health of Grade XI and XII adolescents with special reference to adjustment, anxiety, self-concept and self-confidence. A group of 370 adolescents was covered in the study and data were collected by a Semi-structured Questionnaire and three standardised psychological tests. About one-third (33.8%) adolescents perceived family environment to be disturbed. In this regard, statistically significant difference was found between male and female adolescents (p<0.05). A quarter (24.6%) of the adolescents thought that their parents were too much interfering in their personal affairs. Too much parental pressure for better academic performance was reported by nearly half (46.2%) of the adolescents. Overall, fathers were more likely to be considered as dominating (χ2 (1, 740)=15.23, p<0.001) and short-tempered (χ2 (1, 740)=7.51, p=0.006), while mothers were more likely to be considered as friendly (χ2 (1, 740)=51.64, p<0.001). The results of multiple regression analyses indicate that parental care was associated with high self-confidence while parental pressure was associated with high anxiety. Considering father as friendly was associated with low emotional adjustment and high self-concept while mother as short-tempered was related to high anxiety. Outcome of the study suggests sensitisation programme for parents and Life Skill Education for adolescents.

Relationship between Depressive Mood and Parenting Style of Junior High School Students and Educational Countermeasures

Abstract:Objective: To study the relationship between depressive mood and parenting style of junior high school students. Methods: A total of 1966 junior high school students in Henan Province were selected by cluster sampling method from May 2022 to November 2022. The survey tools included the General Social Data Questionnaire, the Parenting Style Questionnaire (PBI) and the Childhood Depression Disorder Self-Rating Scale (DSRSC). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between adolescent depression and parenting styles. Results: There were 1966 valid questionnaires, of which 1054 were female (53.6%) and 912 were male (46.4%). The age was 13.98±0.56 years. Among 1966 junior high school students, 465 junior high school students had depression. Depression of junior middle school students is negatively correlated with mother's care and father's care, positively correlated with mother's indifference and father's indifference, and positively correlated with mother's overprotection and father's overprotection. Conclusion: Parental care can reduce the risk of depression in junior middle school students, while parental apathy and overprotection can increase the risk of depression in junior middle school students. The depression detection rate of junior high school students is significantly different, highlighting different characteristics in gender, age, parenting style, etc. Educators should develop targeted education and intervention strategies according to the characteristics of junior high school students.

Abstract:This paper mainly discusses the influence of parental rearing style and conflict on adolescent mental health. The article describes the importance of the teenage years, emphasizing that there are obvious and vital changes in the psychological and physical development of a person during this period. Family environment plays the most profound and important role in the growth of young people. At the same time, the article explains in detail how parenting styles and conflict affect adolescents' mental health. Different parenting styles correspondingly affect the psychological characteristics of adolescents from a young age, and even determine the formation of their personality and the level of anti-frustration ability to a certain extent. Parental conflict may make adolescents feel uneasy, worried and fearful, affect their self-esteem and social ability, and may even lead to psychological problems such as low mood and anxiety. The article also discusses the influence of parenting style and conflict on adolescent happiness. Positive parenting style has a positive promoting effect on the improvement of adolescent happiness, while negative parenting style will hinder the improvement of adolescent happiness and life satisfaction. Parental conflict can make adolescents feel helpless and confused, which can lead to impaired self-esteem and affect their social skills and well-being. At the same time, some suggestions are given to solve the problems described in this paper. In general, the parenting style and conflict of parents have an important impact on the mental health development of adolescents, which needs the attention and research of researchers and clinical workers.
Direct and Indirect Effects of Strength-Based Parenting on Depression in Chinese High School Students: Mediation by Cognitive Reappraisal and Expression Suppression

Abstract:Purpose: A growing amount of research has been dedicated to the protective role of strength-based parenting in psychological distress. Strength-based parenting is a style of parenting in which parents are conscious of their children's strengths, and encourage them to develop and make use of those strengths. However, the mechanisms linking strength-based parenting to depression are not well known. Drawing on the social-emotional learning model, this study examined the association between strength-based parenting and depression and the indirect role of emotion regulation (ie, cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression). Materials and methods: A total of 750 Chinese middle school students from two middle schools completed questionnaires comprising the Strength-based Parenting Scale, the Emotion Regulation Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depressive Scale, and sociodemographic characteristics. A total of 695 students provided accurate responses to the two validity check questions, and were thus retained in the final study sample. Of the final sample, 348 (50.1%) were girls, and the respondents overall had an average age of 16.22 years. The direct and indirect paths from strength-based parenting to depression were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: The results showed that strength-based parenting negatively predicted depression and cognitive reappraisal, while strength-based parenting positively predicted depression. Strength-based parenting indirectly predicted depression through cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression. Conclusion: These findings suggest an underlying process by which high strength-based parenting resists depression by increasing cognitive reappraisal and decreasing expression suppression. It is necessary to implement a comprehensive intervention strategy that focuses on strength-based parenting and emotion regulation (eg, cognitive reappraisal).
Parental Psychological Control and Emotional and Behavioral Disorders among Spanish Adolescents

Abstract:There is no denying the fundamental role played by parents in the psychosocial development of their children—either as a liability or as protection against mental health disorders. This study seeks to ascertain, by means of odds ratio statistics (OR), the correlation between parental psychological control and emotional and behavioral disorders. A total of 762 students took part in this study, with an average age of 12.23 years—53.8% of whom were girls and 46.2% were boys. Children and adolescents reported their parental psychological control and their emotional and behavioral disorders (i.e., emotional and behavioral problems, internalizing and externalizing problems). Minors who perceive their psychological control as high are 6 times more likely to suffer from internalizing disorders and 4.8 times more likely to develop externalizing disorders. Furthermore, the probability of suffering externalizing disorders is higher among males who perceive a high degree of psychological control. This study breaks new ground on the importance of perceived psychological control—considered as a negative form of control by parents—in the emotional and behavioral disorders among children and adolescents.

Perceived parental rearing styles and depression in Chinese adolescents: the mediating role of self-compassion

Abstract:Background Adolescence is a period characterized by rapid biological and psychological change, and adolescents have a heightened risk of depression. Parental rearing is an important influencing factor for depression in adolescence. However, the mechanism of influence needs further exploration. Methods A total of 1839 adolescents were recruited from a junior and a senior high school in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, China. They were requested to completed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), and Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21(DASS-21). Results Adolescents recalled their mothers as being more caring and controlling than their fathers. Parental care (maternal care, paternal care) and parental encouragement of autonomy (maternal encouragement of autonomy, paternal encouragement of autonomy) were both negative predictors of depression, while parental control (maternal control, paternal control) was positive predictor of depression. Self-compassion mediated all relationships between parental rearing styles (parental care, parental encouragement of autonomy, and parental control) and depression but played different mediating roles (complete or incomplete mediating role) in different relationships. Conclusion Self-compassion plays a mediator role in all relationships between perceived parental rearing styles (parental care, parental encouragement of autonomy, and parental control) and depression. Adolescents who grown up with less parental care, less parental encouragement of autonomy, and high parental control deserve special attention. Educators and clinicians could help those adolescents reduce the occurrence of depression by increasing their level of self-compassion.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: This study explores the longitudinal and bidirectional relations between paternal/maternal psychological control and adolescent maladjustment (i.e., internalizing symptoms, aggression, and association with deviant peers).METHODS: This longitudinal investigation was conducted at two time points over a one-year interval with participants comprising 543 Chinese adolescents aged 10 to 13 (mean age at Time 1 = 11.29; 51.93% girls). The performed measurements encompassed paternal/maternal psychological control, adolescent internalizing symptoms, aggression, association with deviant peers, and demographic information.RESULTS: The findings of a cross-lagged model analysis revealed that paternal psychological control was longitudinally and positively related to adolescent internalizing symptoms and aggression. Maternal psychological control was not significantly related to any domain of adolescent maladjustment. In turn, adolescent association with deviant peers was longitudinally and positively associated with both parents' psychological control.CONCLUSIONS: Parental psychological control was bidirectionally associated with adolescent maladjustment in general, and paternal psychological control played a crucial role on adolescent maladjustment in the Chinese cultural context. The study's findings supported the reciprocal model of parent-child interaction, and extended it by highlighting the apprehension of the characteristics of parental impact from a cultural perspective. The study results add to the current scholarly understanding of parental psychological control in the non-western cultural context.

Differential Associations Between Parents' Versus Children's Perceptions of Parental Socialization Goals and Chinese Adolescent Depressive Symptoms

Abstract:Although prior studies have demonstrated the associations between parental socialization goals and parenting practices, as well as parenting practices and adolescent depressive symptoms, respectively, research examining the comprehensive developmental pathways among these constructs (i. e., the path from parental socialization goals to parenting practices to adolescent depressive symptoms) is scarce, especially in the Chinese context. Grounded in the integrative model of parenting, this study investigated the associations between parental socialization goals and adolescent depressive symptoms by examining the indirect pathways through parents' autonomy support and psychological control as well as the moderating effect of educational stage. In Study 1, 345 Chinese adolescents and their primary caregivers completed a measure on parental socialization goals. Adolescents also reported on their depressive symptoms. Results showed that children who reported more self-development parental goals showed fewer depressive symptoms. However, parents' reports of goals or child-parent perceptual discrepancies were not related to children's depressive symptoms. Drawing on this finding, 424 middle school and 301 high school Chinese adolescents completed measures regarding parental socialization goals, autonomy support, psychological control, and their own depressive symptoms in Study 2. Results showed that parental autonomy support linked the associations of self-development and achievement-oriented parental goals and children's depressive symptoms among middle school students, whereas parental psychological control linked such associations among high school students. Our findings provide a more holistic view on how parents' socialization goals are related to children's depressive symptoms via their parenting practices. We also discussed the practical implications for the clinical work regarding adolescent depressive symptoms.
Intra- and Inter-Individual Differences in Adolescent Depressive Mood: the Role of Relationships with Parents and Friends

Abstract:Utilizing four waves of data from 1126 secondary school Dutch adolescents (Mage = 13.95 at the first wave; 53% boys), the current study examined the interplay between parent-adolescent and friend-adolescent relationship quality (satisfaction and conflict) in relation to adolescents’ depressive mood. Using multilevel analyses, the interacting effects of parent/friend relationship quality on depressive mood were tested at both the intra- and inter-individual level. Analyses at the intra-individual level investigated whether individual depressive mood fluctuated along with changes in their social relationships regardless of one’s general level of depressive mood; and analyses at the inter-individual level examined whether the average differences in depressive mood between adolescents were associated with different qualities of social relationships. We interpreted the patterns of interactions between parent and friend relationships using four theoretical models: the reinforcement, toxic friends, compensation, and additive model. The results demonstrate the covariation of parent- and friend- relationship quality with adolescents’ depressive mood, and highlight that parent and peer effects are not independent from each other—affirming the compensation and additive models at the intra-individual and the reinforcement and additive models at the inter-individual level. The findings highlight the robustness of the protective effects of parent and peer support and the deleterious effects of conflictual relationships for adolescent mental health. The results have implications for both the theoretical and practical design of (preventive) interventions aimed at decreasing adolescents’ depressive mood.
