Abstract:The effects of different additives on the fermentation and aerobic stability of rice straw silage were studied under laboratory conditions.The treatments were no additive (CK);Lactobacillus (L);a mixture of Lactobacillus and cellulose (LC);a mixture of Lactobacillus and molasses (LM);and a mixture of Lactobacillus,cellulose,and molasses (LMC).The Lactobacillus,cellulose,and molasses were applied at the rate of 5 ×105 cfu/g,0.6 IU/g,and 20 mg/g fresh weight,respectively.After 90 days of ensilage,the quality of rice straw silages was assessed and their chemical composition was determined.The pH value,NH3-N,and organic acid contents in fermented juice were determined and the aerobic stability of the silages was evaluated.The comprehensive score was significantly higher for the silages with additives than for the control silage (P＜0.05).Compared with the control silage,the LC and LMC silages showed significantly (P＜0.05) lower acid detergent fiber content,resulting in higher residual water soluble content.Compared with the control silage,the L,LM,LC and LMC silages showed higher lactic acid concentrations,especially the LC and LMC silages (P＜0.05).The total acid content was significantly lower in the control silage than in the LC and LMC silages,but did not differ significantly among the control,L,and LM silages (P＞0.05).The aerobic stability and aerobic deterioration did not differ significantly between the control silage and those with additives (P＞0.05).In conclusion,the results showed that addition of Lactobacillus increased the lactic acid content and comprehensive evaluation score of silage.Addition of molasses and/or cellulose with Lactobacillus improved the quality of rice straw silage.
An evaluation of the effectiveness of a chemical additive based on sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and sodium nitrite on the fermentation and aerobic stability of corn silage

Abstract:We evaluated the effectiveness of an additive comprising sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and sodium nitrite (SSL) as active ingredients for its ability to improve the aerobic stability of corn silages made in North America. In experiment 1, treatment with SSL (1.5 and 2.0 L/t) on whole-plant corn (WPC) was compared with treatment with an additive containing buffered propionic acid and citric acid (BPA; 2 L/t) on corn harvested at 32 and 38% dry matter and ensiled for 120 d. Silage treated with BPA was higher in ammonia-N and propionic acid relative to other treatments. Treatments with all of the additives had numerically, but not statistically, fewer yeasts compared with untreated silage. Both application rates of SSL resulted in lower concentrations of ethanol compared with untreated and BPA silages. Treatment with BPA improved the aerobic stability of silages compared with untreated silage, but the effect from SSL was markedly greater. In experiment 2, WPC was untreated or treated with 2 or 3 L of SSL/t or a microbial inoculant containing Enterococcus faecium M74, Lactobacillus plantarum CH6072, and Lactobacillus buchneri LN1819 (final total lactic acid bacteria application rate of 150,000 cfu/g of fresh forage). Silages were air stressed for 24 h at 28 and 42 d of storage and ensiled for 49 d before opening. Inoculation had no effect on acid end products, ethanol, number of yeasts, or aerobic stability compared with other treatments. Treatment with SSL decreased the amount of ethanol, had no effect on number of yeasts, and improved aerobic stability in a dose-dependent manner compared with other treatments. In experiment 3, WPC was untreated or treated with 2 L of SSL/t and ensiled for 5, 15, and 30 d. Treatment with SSL resulted in silage with fewer yeasts and lower concentrations of ethanol after all times of ensiling compared with untreated silage. In addition, SSL improved aerobic stability after each period of ensiling, but the effect was more at 15 and 30 d compared with 5 d of storage. Treating WPC with SSL can improve the aerobic stability of corn silage made in North America, and the effect can be observed as soon as 5 d after ensiling.
Effect of Additives on the Quality of Asparagus Officinalis Stem Leaf Silage

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different additives on the quality of Asparagus officinalis silage (stem and leaf).Lactobacillus,lactobacillus+cellulose,lactobacillus+rice bran and lactobacillus+cellulose+rice bran were added to silage;the concentration of lactobacillus,cellulose and rice bran were 5×10 5 cfu/g,0.6 IU/g,30 mg/g of fresh weight respectively.After being ensiled for 90 days, the quality of A.officinalis stem leaf silage was assessed.The chemical composition,pH,NH 3-N and organic acid content of fermented juice were analysed.The data showed that,compared with the control group,the ad-dition of lactobacillus increased the acetic acid content,reduced aerobic deterioration (P <0.05)and improved the aerobic stability.Lactobacillus with rice bran and cellulose tended to lower the quality of A.officinalis stem leaf silage.The results demonstrated that high quality A.officinalis stem leaf silage can be obtained with addition of lactobacillus only.

Abstract:The effects of sorbic acid, ethanol, previously fermented juice and their combined additives on fermentation quality and residual water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) of napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum) were herein investigated. There were two experiments in total. The treatments of experiment 1 were as follows: control (no addition); sorbic acid at 0.1%, S; molasses at 1.0%, M; previously fermented juice at 5 mL/kg, P; SP; SM; SPM. The treatments of experiment 2 were as follows: control (no addition); ethanol at 1.5%, E; molasses at 1.0%, M; previously fermented juice at 5 mL/kg, P; EM; EP; EPM. The laboratory silos (10 L) were kept at room temperature (~25 °C), and opened after 120 days of ensiling and the chemical compositions of silage were analyzed. Sorbic acid addition significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the silage pH and increased the residual WSC and lactic acid (LA) contents as compared with control. Ethanol addition decreased pH, acetic acid (AA) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) contents, and increased the ratio of LA/AA, LA and residual WSC contents. Molasses addition increased ratios of LA/AA and enhanced WSC content used by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The PFJ addition increased AA and ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen (AN/TN) and decreased the LA contents. Comparing the fermentation quality among all silages in the present study, the combined additives SM and EM performed best in improving the silage quality of napiergrass.

Abstract:Objective: To explore feed resources capable of replacing regular poor-quality fodder, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of additives on the fermentation quality, in vitro digestibility and aerobic stability of mulberry leaves silage.Methods: The mulberry leaves were ensiled either untreated (control) or treated with 1×10 6 cfu/g fresh matter Lactobacillus plantarum (L), 1% glucose (G), 3% molasses (M), a combination of 1% glucose and Lactobacillus plantarum (L+G), and a combination of 3% molasses and Lactobacillus plantarum (L+M). The fermentation quality and chemical composition were analyzed after 7, 14, 30, and 60 d, respectively. The 60-d silages were subjected to an aerobic stability test and fermented with buffered rumen fluid to measure the digestibility.Results: Inoculating lactic acid bacteria (LAB) resulted in more rapid increase in lactic acid concentrations and decline in pH of mulberry leaves silage as compared control. Higher acetic acid and lower ethanol and ammonia nitrogen concentrations (p<0.05) were observed in the LAB-inoculated silages as opposed to control during ensiling. The LAB-inoculated silages contained lower water-soluble carbohydrates compared with control during the first 14 d of ensiling, and lower neutral detergent fibre (p<0.05) concentrations as compared with non-LAB inoculated silages. Adding molasses alone increased (p<0.05) the digestibility of dry matter (DM). The aerobic stability of mulberry leaves silage was increased by LAB inoculation, whereas decreased by adding glucose or molasses.Conclusion: The LAB inoculation improved fermentation quality and aerobic stability of mulberry leaves silage, while adding glucose or molasses failed to affect the fermentation and impaired the aerobic stability. Inoculating LAB alone is recommended for mulberry leaves especially when ensiled at a relatively high DM.

Silage review: Recent advances and future uses of silage additives

Abstract:Additives have been available for enhancing silage preservation for decades. This review covers research studies published since 2000 that have investigated the efficacy of silage additives. The review has been divided into 6 categories of additives: homofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB), obligate heterofermentative LAB, combination inoculants containing obligate heterofermentative LAB plus homofermentative LAB, other inoculants, chemicals, and enzymes. The homofermentative LAB rapidly decrease pH and increase lactic acid relative to other fermentation products, although a meta-analysis indicated no reduction in pH in corn, sorghum, and sugarcane silages relative to untreated silages. These additives resulted in higher milk production according to the meta-analysis by mechanisms that are still unclear. Lactobacillus buchneri is the dominant species used in obligate heterofermentative LAB silage additives. It slowly converts lactic acid to acetic acid and 1,2-propanediol during silo storage, improving aerobic stability while having no effect on animal productivity. Current research is focused on finding other species in the Lb. buchneri group capable of producing more rapid improvements in aerobic stability. Combination inoculants aim to provide the aerobic stability benefits of Lb. buchneri with the silage fermentation efficiency and animal productivity benefits of homofermentative LAB. Research indicates that these products are improving aerobic stability, but feeding studies are not yet sufficient to make conclusions about effects on animal performance. Novel non-LAB species have been studied as potential silage inoculants. Streptococcus bovis is a potential starter species within a homofermentative LAB inoculant. Propionibacterium and Bacillus species offer improved aerobic stability in some cases. Some yeast research has focused on inhibiting molds and other detrimental silage microorganisms, whereas other yeast research suggests that it may be possible to apply a direct-fed microbial strain at ensiling, have it survive ensiling, and multiply during feed out. Chemical additives traditionally have fallen in 2 groups. Formic acid causes direct acidification, suppressing clostridia and other undesired bacteria and improving protein preservation during ensiling. On the other hand, sorbic, benzoic, propionic, and acetic acids improve silage aerobic stability at feed out through direct inhibition of yeasts and molds. Current research has focused on various combinations of these chemicals to improve both aerobic stability and animal productivity. Enzyme additives have been added to forage primarily to breakdown plant cell walls at ensiling to improve silage fermentation by providing sugars for the LAB and to enhance the nutritive value of silage by increasing the digestibility of cell walls. Cellulase or hemicellulase mixtures have been more successful at the former than the latter. A new approach focused on Lb. buchneri producing ferulic acid esterase has also had mixed success in improving the efficiency of silage digestion. Another new enzyme approach is the application of proteases to corn silage to improve starch digestibility, but more research is needed to determine the feasibility. Future silage additives are expected to directly inhibit clostridia and other detrimental microorganisms, mitigate high mycotoxin levels on harvested forages during ensiling, enhance aerobic stability, improve cell wall digestibility, increase the efficiency of utilization of silage nitrogen by cattle, and increase the availability of starch to cattle.

Abstract:The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculants and chemical additives on the fermentation quality, aerobic stability and in vitro gas production kinetics and digestibility of total mixed ration (TMR) silage. Total mixed ration (568 g/kg dry matter (DM)) was ensiled with six experimental treatments: (1) no additives (control); (2) Lactobacillus buchneri (LB; applied at 1 × 10 6 cfu/g fresh weight (FW)); (3) Lactobacillus casei (LC; applied at 1 × 10 6 cfu/g FW); (4) calcium propionate (CAP; applied at 0.5% FW); (5) sodium diacetate (SD; applied at 0.5% FW); (6) potassium sorbate (PS; applied at 0.1% FW). All silos (18 L) were opened for fermentation quality, in vitro gas production kinetics and digestibility analysis after 90 days of ensiling, and then subjected to aerobic stability test for 14 days. All the TMR silage was well-preserved with low pH (4.36 ∼ 4.66) and acceptable levels of butyric acid (1.02 ∼ 2.51 g/kg DM) and ammonia nitrogen (86.3 ∼ 107 g/kg total nitrogen). All the groups were steady during 14 days of aerobic exposure, while SD group was more stable with lower ( p < 0.05) yeast (4.60 vs . 5.17 ∼ 5.77 log 10 cfu/g FW) and mould (3.33 vs . 4.12 ∼ 4.64 log 10 cfu/g FW) populations than other treated groups on day 14. Moreover, SD group had the highest ( p < 0.05) in vitro digestibility of dry matter (67.8 vs . 56.6 ∼ 63.5%) and neutral detergent fibre (61.7 vs . 50.5 ∼ 57.4%) among all groups. Overall, SD is recommended as additive to improve fermentation quality, in vitro ruminal digestibility, and aerobic stability of TMR silage. After 14 days of aerobic exposure, the yeast and mould populations in TMR silage can be efficiently inhibited by sodium diacetate treatment. Sodium diacetate treatment evidently enhanced in vitro digestibility of dry matter and neutral detergent fibre compared to other treatments. Sodium diacetate is recommended as additive to improve fermentation quality, in vitro ruminal digestibility, and aerobic stability of TMR silage.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application of an inoculant and a preservative on the fermentation quality, in vitro digestibility, and aerobic stability of alfalfa silage-based fermented total mixed ration (TMR). The TMR was ensiled with (1) no additives (control), (2) Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), or (3) potassium sorbate (PS). The V-scores of all silages were higher than 80 points during the 30 days of ensiling. The addition of LP and PS had no effects on the in vitro parameters, such as in vitro digestibility and in vitro gas production (p > 0.05). LP-treated silage showed similar fermentation quality and comparable aerobic stability to the control (110 h). The LP only decreased the ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) content (p < 0.05) during ensiling. The PS significantly increased the pH of TMR silages (p 162 h) of TMR silage, indicated by the higher water-soluble carbohydrate content and lower NH3-N content in comparison with those in the control after aerobic exposure (p < 0.05). The improvement in fermentation quality is extremely small in terms of applying LP in TMR silage based on a large percentage of other silage ingredients. The PS is effective in conserving unpacked TMR silage and showed the potential to reduce the risk of ruminal acidosis in livestock.

Potassium sorbate reduces production of ethanol and 2 esters in corn silage

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of biological and chemical silage additives on the production of volatile organic compounds (VOC; methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, methyl acetate, and ethyl acetate) within corn silage. Recent work has shown that silage VOC can contribute to poor air quality and reduce feed intake. Silage additives may reduce VOC production in silage by inhibiting the activity of bacteria or yeasts that produce them. We produced corn silage in 18.9-L bucket silos using the following treatments: (1) control (distilled water); (2) Lactobacillus buchneri 40788, with 400,000 cfu/g of wet forage; (3) Lactobacillus plantarum MTD1, with 100,000 cfu/g; (4) a commercial buffered propionic acid-based preservative (68% propionic acid, containing ammonium and sodium propionate and acetic, benzoic, and sorbic acids) at a concentration of 1 g/kg of wet forage (0.1%); (5) a low dose of potassium sorbate at a concentration of 91 mg/kg of wet forage (0.0091%); (6) a high dose of potassium sorbate at a concentration of 1g/kg of wet forage (0.1%); and (7) a mixture of L. plantarum MTD1 (100,000 cfu/g) and a low dose of potassium sorbate (91 mg/kg). Volatile organic compound concentrations within silage were measured after ensiling and sample storage using a headspace gas chromatography method. The high dose of potassium sorbate was the only treatment that inhibited the production of multiple VOC. Compared with the control response, it reduced ethanol by 58%, ethyl acetate by 46%, and methyl acetate by 24%, but did not clearly affect production of methanol or 1-propanol. The effect of this additive on ethanol production was consistent with results from a small number of earlier studies. A low dose of this additive does not appear to be effective. Although it did reduce methanol production by 24%, it increased ethanol production by more than 2-fold and did not reduce the ethyl acetate concentration. All other treatments increased ethanol production at least 2-fold relative to the control, and L. buchneri addition also increased the 1-propanol concentration to approximately 1% of dry matter. No effects of any treatments on fiber fractions or protein were observed. However, L. buchneri addition resulted in slightly more ammonia compared with the control. If these results hold under different conditions, a high dose of potassium sorbate will be an effective treatment for reducing VOC production in and emission from silage. Regulations aimed at reducing VOC emission could be ineffective or even increase emission if they promote silage additives without recognition of different types of additives.

Abstract:Digital and palmar dermatoglyphics of 184 male and 224 female normal American Negroes were evaluated for digital patterns, digital ridge counts, palmar patterns, palmar main line terminations, accessory triradii and palmar creases. All subjects were seven year olds examined and found free of chronic or other genetic diseases. The results were presented for the left and right hand separately as well as in terms of bilateral symmetry. The present results were for the most part comparable to those of the African and other American Negro groups reported earlier. The distributions of the various dermatoglyphic features among the Negroes taken as a group were compared to those of the other racial groups and their differences were discussed.
Effect of Compound Additives on Nutritional Composition, Fermentation Quality, and Bacterial Community of High-Moisture Alfalfa Silage

Abstract:The wilting process is required for the preparation of traditional low-moisture silage, which is not only subject to the interference of rainfall during the harvest season in many areas, but also increases labor, economic, and time costs. Therefore, in this experiment, newly harvested alfalfa was supplemented with a complex additive consisting of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), sucrose, and corn flour, and then ensiled directly in order to explore a suitable high-moisture silage processing method. There were four groups: control (CK), 0.01 g/kg LAB plus 2% sugar (S), 0.01 g/kg LAB plus 5% corn flour (C5), and 0.01 g/kg LAB plus 5% corn flour (C10). The results show that all four types of silage had significantly reduced acid detergent fiber, acetic acid content, and ammonia/total nitrogen (p < 0.05). The relative abundance of Lactobacillus spp. was significantly higher (p < 0.05), and that of Weissella, Clostridium sensu stricto 12, and Pantoea genera was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in all four treatments. Group S had significantly increased crude protein content, and groups C5 and C10 had significantly reduced neutral detergent fiber. Overall, group C10 had the highest LA concentration, the highest relative abundance of Lactobacillus spp., and the lowest pH, ammonia/total nitrogen, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber. Silage with a complex additive consisting of LAB + 10% corn flour is recommended to achieve good fermentation with high nutritional quality.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effects of adding Lactobacillus buchneri (LB), Lactobacillus brevis (LBR) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) on the fermentation quality, nitrate degradation and bacterial community of sorghum-sudangrass silage. The results showed that the addition of LB significantly increased the pH and acetic acid content ( p < 0.05), but high-quality silage was obtained. The addition of LBR and BS improved the fermentation quality of sorghum-sudangrass silage. The use of additives reduced the nitrate content in sorghum-sudangrass silage. The LB group increased the release of N 2 O at 3–7 days of ensiling ( p < 0.05), and LBR and BS increased the release of N 2 O at 1–40 days of ensiling ( p < 0.05). On the first day of ensiling, all silages were dominated by Weisslla , over 3 days of ensiling all silages were dominated by Lactobacillus . Acinetobacter , Serratia , Aquabacterium, and unclassified_f_enterobacteriaceae showed significant negative correlations with nitrate degradation during sorghum-sudangrass ensiling ( p < 0.05). The BS and LBR groups increased the metabolic abundance of denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction, and assimilatory nitrate reduction ( p < 0.05). Overall, the additive ensures the fermentation quality of sorghum-sudangrass silage and promotes the degradation of nitrate by altering the bacterial community.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrocyanic acid (HCN) is regulated in the European Union to max. 57 mg/kg dry matter (DM) in complete feed. The study evaluated the effect of two commercial silage inoculants on fermentation, dry matter loss, aerobic stability and the level of hydrocyanic acid of whole-plant sorghum. Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] variety Vilom ene was harvested at the soft dough maturity stage at 29.8 % DM. Ten mini-silos (1.5 l volume) for each treatment were filled with crop (193 kg DM/m3). Control forage (CON) was not inoculated. AS treatment was inoculated with SiloSolve AS (150,000 total CFU/g of forage), containing Lentilactobacillus buchneri (DSM22501), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (DSM26571) and Enterococcus faecium (DSM22502). FC treatment was inoculated with SiloSolve FC (150,000 total CFU/g of forage), containing Lentilactobacillus buchneri (DSM22501) and Lactococcus lactis (DSM11037). After 60 d of fermentation at room temperature, five mini-silos per treatment were opened and sampled for proximate analysis, forage hygiene, and the fermentation profile. The content from the other five mini-silos was subjected to an aerobic stability test. Aerobic stability was defined as the time (hours) for the silage temperature to exceed 3.0°C above the ambient temperature. The data were analyzed as a completely randomized design using GLM of Minitab with treatments as a fixed effect. No significant effect of treatments was observed on dry matter loss. Both inoculants increased acetic acid levels in the silages compared with CON; P < 0.05), where FC showed a significantly greater level than AS (3.1, 2.5 and 1.7 % DM for FC, AS, and CON, respectively; Table 1). Both inoculants produced 1,2-propanediol (P < 0.05). FC silage had a greater level of 1,2-propanediol than AS (1.0, 0.4 and 0.0 % DM for FC, AS, and CON, respectively). The concentrations of lactic acid, ammonia-N and ethanol were not different between treatments. FC significantly reduced the count of yeasts (3.1, 4.1, and 4.3 Log10 CFU/g for FC, AS, and CON, respectively). The count of molds was below the detection level (< 2.0 Log10 CFU/g) in all silages. The FC silage markedly improved aerobic stability, extending it to 231 h, compared with 112 and 80 h for the AS and CON treatments (P < 0.001). AS tended to improve aerobic stability compared with CON (P = 0.08). No differences were observed in the concentration of the hydrocyanic acid between treatments. The ensiling process significantly reduced (P < 0.0001) the hydrocyanic acid from 86.4 mg/kg DM in the fresh crop to 58.4 mg/kg DM in silages. Such silage should be fed only together with HCN-free ingredients in a TMR. However, these results demonstrate that only the combination of L. buchneri (DSM22501) and Lactococcus lactis (DSM11037) effectively decreased the yeast count and consequently improved aerobic stability in whole-plant sorghum silage.

Abstract:Bacterial inoculants are considered as a good choice for successful ensiling, playing a key role in improving the silage quality. However, the potential of different bacteria, especially the propionic acid bacteria, in forage oat ensiling is yet to be explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the regulation effects of different bacterial additives on the fermentation quality of forage oat silage. Four additives (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum F1, LP; Lacticaseibacillus 0rhamnosus XJJ01, LR; Lacticaseibacillus paracasei XJJ02, LC; and Propionibacterium acidipropionici 1.1161, PP; without additives, CK) were inoculated in forage oat silage, and the fermentation quality and organic compounds were determined after 60 days of ensiling. Notably, LR showed higher dry matter preservation compared to other additives and CK. In addition, LP and LR showed strong lactic acid synthesis capacity, resulting in lower pH compared to other additives and CK. The treatments of PP and LC increased the bacterial diversity in silage, while the bacterial community in the LR group was different from that in other groups. In addition, the PP- and LC-treated oat silage showed significantly lower total in vitro gas production and a lower methane content. These results suggest that LP is more favorable for producing high-quality oat silage than LR, LC, or PP. Both the PP- and LC- treated oat silage may reduce rumen greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract:Whole corn plants at stage of maturity were treated by adding microbial inoculants or formic acid at ensiling to determine the effect of these additives (lactic acid bacterial inoculants (LAB) or formic acid) on the fermentation during ensiling. Nutrients digestion coefficients, nitrogen balance, rumen function and DM,CF degradability of sheep fed rations containing untreated or treated silage. Feed intake, milk production and milk composition of crossbred Friesian cows fed treated or un-treated silage plus 6kg CFM were also studied. The results of silage quality indicated that formic acid silage had lower (P<0.05) value of pH, ammonia nitrogen, total VFA and lactic acid than inoculanted silage and untreated silage. The results of the chemical and physical characteristics indicated a good quality for the untreated or treated silages. Nine Barki meal sheep used in digestibility experiment were assigned into 3 similar groups of 3 each. Animals were fed one of experimental rations R1, R2 or control, which containing inoculanted silage, formic acid treated silage or un-treated silage respectively. The results showed insignificant differences (P<0.05) in digestibility of DM and OM among experimental rations. Highest (P<0.05) CP digestibility and NB observed with ration containing formic acid silage. Moreover all animals fed experimental rations showed positive NB. While, highest (P<0.05) CF digestibility was recorded for the ration containing inoculanted silage. However, nutritive value were significantly (P<0.05) higher with R1and R2 than control. Rumen fermentation and in-situ trails determined using three cannulated female Barki sheep. The main results showed that NH3-N concentration was higher for sheep given the control ration following R1. While, highest (P<0.05) TVFA'S was recorded for sheep fed R1and R2 compared to those fed control ration. On the other hand, microbial protein synthesis was lowest (P<0.05) for sheep fed R1 and R2 than those fed ration containing un-treated silage which recorded highest value. Dry matter and CF degradability showed significant (P<0.05) increased for rations containing inoculants silage than control ration. Ration containing formic acid silage showed intermediate value. Feed intake, milk yield and milk composition were significantly increased for cows fed inoculants silage and formic acid silage. Also, these silage additives showed improved in Net revenue and Economic Efficiency%. These results introduce a novel technique towards making best use of agricultural residues as a compensatory feed for feeding ruminants and minimize such problems of disposal pollution.

Abstract:An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of three application rates (0,1 and 2 times the recommended rate) of a commercial additive containing a lactic acid-producing bacterial inoculant as well as plant cell walldegrading enzymes, on the microbial succession, fermentation end-products, and aerobic stability of guinea grass ( Panicum maximum var. Jacq.) silage. Vegetative material was harvested at 30% dry matter (DM) and chopped into 2.5-cm pieces. At ensiling, three treatments were imposed: no additive (control), additive applied at recommended rate, and at 2x the recommended rate. Three silos per treatment were opened after 0, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28, and 56 d of fermentation, and siiage was analyzed for pH, microbial succession, chemical composition, fermentation end-products and aerobic stability. For aerobic stability determination, three silos per treatment were opened at the end of the fermentation period, and silage (400 g) was exposed to air for three days in Styrofoam containers lined with plastic. After 0 , 1 , and 3 d of aerobic exposure, silage was analyzed for pH, microbial populations (total bacteria, yeast and molds), water soluble carbohydrate content, fermentation end-products and in vitro dry matter degradability (IVDMD). Temperature was monitored daily and dry matter recovery (DMR) was calculated after 1 and 3 d of aerobic exposure. The addition of the commercial additive, applied one or two times the recommended rate, increased (P < 0.05) the lactic acid producing bacterial population and decreased (P < 0.05) conforms during early stages of the fermentation process, but did not influence the yeast and mold populations or the chemical composition of the resulting silage. Use of the inoculant-enzyme mixture also resulted in siiage with higher lactic acid content 56 days post ensiling. The silage additive did not inffuence pH, temperature, microbial populations, soluble carbohydrate content, IVDMD or DMR of guinea grass silage after exposure to air. In summary, use of the commercial additive applied at the recommended rate partially improved the fermentation characteristics of guinea grass silage, but did not enhance its aerobic stability. Increasing the application rate to twice the recommended rate did not result in better fermentation.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the impacts of three organic acid salts and two bacterial additives on the fermentation profile, in vitro digestibility and gas production, and aerobic stability of total mixed ration (TMR) silage prepared with 10% fresh weight (FW) of wet hulless barley distillers’ grains (WHDG), 35% FW of common vetch, 15% FW of whole-crop oat, 10% FW of hulless barley straw, and 30% FW of mixed concentrate. The total mixed ration (555 g kg−1 FW) was ensiled with six treatments: (1) no additives (control); (2) calcium propionate (CAP; 0.5% FW); (3) potassium sorbate (POS; 0.1% FW); (4) sodium diacetate (SDA; 0.5% FW); (5) Lactobacillus buchneri (LB; 1 × 106 cfu g−1 FW); and (6) Lactobacillus casei (LAC; 1 × 106 cfu g−1 FW). All silos (20 L) were opened for the fermentation profile and in vitro digestibility analysis after 95 days of fermentation, and then subjected to an aerobic stability experiment for 14 days. All the TMR silage was well preserved with a low pH (4.32~4.51), acceptable levels of butyric acid (1.34~1.56 g kg−1 dry matter), and ammonia nitrogen (69.1~87.1 g kg−1 total nitrogen). All the groups were steady during aerobic exposure, while the SDA treatment was more stable with lower populations of undesirable microorganisms on day 14. The CAP, POS, and SDA treatments evidently (p < 0.05) enhanced the in vitro digestibility of dry matter (54.8~57.5 vs. 48.4%) and neutral detergent fiber (48.4~51.6 vs. 41.1%) compared to the control. By comprehensive consideration, SDA is recommended as additive to enhance fermentation quality, aerobic stability, and in vitro digestibility of TMR silage containing 10% FW of WHDG.

Abstract:To develop a new high-yielding and polysaccharide-containing forage resource for livestock, the effects of different cutting methods and additives on Saccharum arundinaceum silage were evaluated. The wilted S. arundinaceum were chopped and knead-wired. The silages from each cutting method were treated with Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), cellulase (CE) and the combination of LP and CE (LP + CE) for 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days. Compared with the CK treatment, CE treatment exhibited better effects in the degradation of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), LP exhibited a better performance in preserving the content of dry matter (DM), and adding LP + CE significantly enhanced ( P < 0.05) the contents of lactic acid (LA), crude protein (CP) and DM and significantly reduced ( P < 0.05) the pH and NDF content during ensiling. In addition, both additives exerted a remarkable effect on the silage bacterial community ( P < 0.05), with a dramatic increase in the Lactobacillus abundance and a decrease in the abundance of Enterobacter . Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) became the most dominant bacteria that affected the fermentation quality of LP and LP + CE silages. Meanwhile, chopped silages showed better fermentation quality and nutrient preservation and a higher abundance of LAB. Our research indicated that the chopped S. arundinaceum ensiling with LP + CE could exert a positive effect on LA fermentation and preservation of nutrient substances by shifting the bacterial community. In conclusion, S. arundinaceum can serve as a new silage resource for feed utilization by the ensiling method of LP + CE-chopped.
