Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the cooperative tracking problem for a class of nonlinear uncertain networked systems subject to an active leader, whose state can merely be partially measured and input channel is disturbed as well. By virtue of neural network (NN) technique, the dynamics of followers are properly modeled on certain basis functions and their input channels are assumed to be disturbed as well. In this work, an observer-based adaptive control is proposed for the nonlinear networked systems which may have non-identical dynamics. It is shown via Lyapunov theory that the overall system is cooperatively uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB) by appropriately choosing the parameters under some graph condition. In the end, several numerical simulations are elaborated for validation of the proposed adaptive controller.

Abstract:In this paper, the distributed cooperative control for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems connected by undirected graph is investigated. The dynamic of each agent is first order with unknown mismatched parameters and external disturbances. To reduce the communication burden between each agent and decrease the update frequency of the controllers, the fixed threshold event-triggered mechanisms are considered during the states's broadcasting and the control signals. Based on the adaptive method, the event-based cooperative control protocol is constructed. The asymptotically consensus tracking of all agents are guaranteed and the signals in the closed-loop system are bounded, meanwhile the Zeno behavior is excluded. Simulation results of four agents show the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the output synchronization of networked SISO nonlinear systems that can be transformed into semi-strict feedback form. Due to parameter uncertainty, the agents have heterogeneous dynamics. Combined backstepping method together with graph theory, we construct an augmented Laplacian potential function for analysis and a distributed controller is designed recursively for each agent such that its output can be synchronized to its neighbors' outputs. The distributed controller of each agent has three parts: state feedback of itself, neighborhood information transmitted through the network and adaptive parameter updaters both for itself and its neighbors. Moreover, distributed tuning function is designed to minimize the order of the parameter updater. It is proved that when the undirected graph is connected, all agents’ outputs in the network can be synchronized, i.e., cooperative output synchronization of the network is realized. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

Abstract:In this article, a distributed observer- and event-based practical consensus control for networked systems subject to adaptive nonlinear couplings is investigated. Considering that the node’s state is not always measurable and the finite communication bandwidth exists in engineering systems, two distributed adaptive event-triggered control protocols subject to nonlinear couplings are proposed under observer-based dynamic output feedback. Then, distributed dynamic event-triggered control policies corresponding to two abovementioned adaptive controllers are proposed, respectively. The proposed nonlinear coupled event-triggered control schemes not only overcome continuous communication among nodes, but also relax the requirement of relying on global information for achieving a distributed practical consensus. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified through a team of practical networked ground vehicles implemented through MATLAB/Simulink and robot operating systems environment.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate output synchronization problem of nonlinear systems that can be transformed into strict feedback form with unknown control direction. To this end, an augmented Laplacian potential function is introduced to construct local level distributed adaptive controllers such that outputs of networked agents can be synchronized while all other states maintain bounded. Moreover, tuning functions are designed to reduce the order of the parameter updater. In contrast to conventional adaptive backstepping procedure, both the parameter updating law and tuning function of the proposed scheme take advantage of information flow among networked agents and thus distributive in nature. It is proved that output synchronization of the entire network can be achieved by properly choosing Nussbaum functions, provided the information graph is undirected and connected. Furthermore, we also proposed a way to define a proper Nussbaum function. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the design of a distributed cooperative synchronization controller for a class of higher-order nonlinear multi-agent systems. The objective is to achieve synchronization and satisfy a predefined time-based performance. Dynamics of the agents (also called the nodes) are assumed to be unknown to the controller and are estimated using Neural Networks. The proposed robust neuro-adaptive controller drives different states of nodes systematically to synchronize with the state of the leader node within the constraints of the prescribed performance. The nodes are connected through a weighted directed graph with a time-invariant topology. Only few nodes have access to the leader. Lyapunov-based stability proofs demonstrate that the multi-agent system is uniformly ultimately bounded stable. Highly nonlinear heterogeneous networked systems with uncertain parameters and external disturbances were used to validate the robustness and performance of the new novel approach. Simulation results considered two different examples: single-input single-output and multi-input multi-output, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Abstract:A practical design method is developed for cooperative tracking control of higher-order nonlinear systems with a dynamic leader. The communication network is a weighted directed graph with a fixed topology. Each follower node is modeled by a higher-order integrator incorporating with unknown nonlinear dynamics and an unknown disturbance. The leader node is modeled as a higher-order nonautonomous nonlinear system. It acts as a command generator giving commands only to a small portion of the networked group. A robust adaptive neural network controller is designed for each follower node such that all follower nodes ultimately synchronize to the leader node with bounded residual errors. Moreover, these controllers are distributed in the sense that the controller design for each follower node only requires relative state information between itself and its neighbors. A simulation example demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this article, the distributed adaptive asymptotical consensus tracking control is considered for a class of high‐order nonlinear multi‐agent systems with matched unknown parameters under the event‐triggered communication mechanism. The controllers, adaptive laws and triggering conditions are presented under directed topology with a spanning tree, relieving communication burden among the connected agents since continuous monitoring of in‐neighbors is no longer needed. To handle the cross‐coupling term associated with asymmetric Laplacian matrix and unknown parameters of all agents when the candidate Lyapunov function is defined in terms of local consensus errors, adaptive immersion and invariance control technique is adopted. Adaptive estimators are also designed to estimate the constants related to global information, with which the proposed control scheme is fully distributed. It is shown that all closed‐loop system signals are globally uniformly bounded and all agents can track the reference signal asymptotically while ruling out Zeno behavior though a subset of the agents cannot have direct access to the reference signal information. A numerical example is illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed control protocol.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, a novel event-triggered self-learning robust tracking control scheme for a class of nonlinear interconnected systems with uncertain interconnections is developed based on adaptive dynamic programming (ADP). Initially, the robust tracking control problem of interconnected systems is transformed to the robust stabilization one of augmented interconnected systems. To address the uncertain interconnections as well as optimize the sample intervals, a group of auxiliary subsystems, each with a novel discounted cost function, are introduced, which enables the robust stabilization problem to be further converted to a group of two-player zero-sum differential games. Next, an event-triggered ADP algorithm is proposed to obtain the saddle point solutions, based on which the distributed event-triggered robust tracking control policies for the overall system are established. Specifically, the proposed event-triggered mechanism is asynchronous and distributed where the sample intervals are optimized to further reduce the computational burden and save the communication resources. Moreover, the tracking errors and the approximation errors of critic network weights are demonstrated to be uniformly ultimately bounded by using the Lyapunov approach. Finally, two simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

Abstract:This paper proposes an adaptive tracking control with prescribed performance function for distributive cooperative control of highly nonlinear multi-agent systems. The use of such approach confines the tracking error within a large predefined set to a predefined smaller set. The key idea is to transform the constrained system into unconstrained one through the transformation of the output error. Agents' dynamics are assumed unknown, and the controller is developed for a strongly connected structured network. The proposed controller allows all agents to follow the trajectory of the leader node, while satisfying the necessary dynamic requirements. The proposed approach guarantees uniform ultimate boundedness for the transformed error as well as a bounded adaptive estimate of the unknown parameters and dynamics. Simulations include two examples to validate the robustness and smoothness of the proposed controller against highly nonlinear heterogeneous multi-agent system with uncertain time-variant parameters and external disturbances. Abstract:This paper considers the output consensus problem of tracking a desired trajectory for a group of higher-order nonlinear strict-feedback multi-agent systems over directed communication topologies. Only a subset of the agents is given direct access to the desired trajectory information. A distributed adaptive consensus protocol driving all agents to track the trajectory is presented using the backstepping technique and neural networks. The Lyapunov theory is applied to guarantee that all signals in the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded and that all agents' outputs synchronize to the desired trajectory with bounded residual errors. Compared with prior work, the dynamics of each agent discussed here is more general and does not require the assumption “linearity in the unknown parameters” or the matching condition. Moreover, the bounded residual errors can be reduced as small as desired by appropriately choosing design parameters. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of dynamic friction compensation of networked Lagrange system is considered to design the synchronization controller with better performance. LuGre friction model is introduced to obtain accurate description of friction. The tracking control algorithms for certain and uncertain parameters are provided. Control algorithm for certain parameters has lower computation load, while control algorithm for uncertain parameters has the capability of adapting changes by learning from the tracking error. Both control algorithms achieve synchronization rapidly. Simulations are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed tracking algorithm.

Abstract:The distributed tracking control for multiple Euler-Lagrange systems with a dynamic leader is investigated in this article via the event-triggered approach. Only a portion of followers have access to the leader, and the communication topology among all agents is directed that contains a directed spanning tree rooted at the leader. The case that the leader's generalized velocity is constant is first considered, and a distributed event-based control law is developed by using a velocity estimator. When the leader's generalized velocity is time-varying, novel distributed continuous estimators are proposed to avoid the undesirable chattering effect while guaranteeing that the estimate errors converge to zeros. With the designed distributed estimators, another distributed event-based control protocol is provided. Controller update frequency and resource consumption in our work can be reduced by applying the aforementioned two distributed control laws, and the tracking errors can converge to zeros. In addition, it is rigorously proved that no agent exhibits Zeno behavior. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed distributed event-based control laws is elucidated by a number of simulation examples.

Abstract:This paper studies the distributed cooperative control problem of uncertain non-strict feedback nonlinear multi-agent systems including time-varying output constraints, unmodeled state dynamics and unknown control directions. By introducing two universally constrained functions and using error coordinate transformation, the output constraints are effectively handled. Meanwhile, the convergence of cooperative tracking errors is also guaranteed. The dynamic signals that are observable and generated by the first-order auxiliary system are used to mitigate the effect of unmodeled state dynamics on the system. With the aid of the property of Gaussian function, the coupling problem among multi-agents and the non-strict feedback terms are well resolved. To tackle unknown control directions and save communication resources, a novel event-triggered neural adaptive cooperative control scheme is proposed via command filtered backstepping and dynamic surface control techniques without using Nussbaum functions. Through Lyapunov stability analysis, it is proved that all signals in the closed-loop system are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded and the Zeno behavior can be excluded. All followers’ outputs can track the leader’s trajectory within the constraints. Finally, the simulation example also verifies that the proposed event-triggered control scheme is valid.

Abstract:This paper aims to address the adaptive consensus tracking control problem for distributed nonlinear multi-agent systems with unmodeled dynamics. It should be emphasized that each considered follower is modeled as a nonlinear non-strict feedback system in which the control gains are unknown functions rather than constants. By applying an inherent property of radial basis function (RBF) neural networks (NNs) and the introduced dynamics signals, the design difficulties aroused from unknown nonlinearities and unmodeled dynamics are overcome such that the control purpose can be achieved. Then, based on adaptive backstepping methods, a new consensus tracking control protocol is proposed. It is shown that the closed-loop systems are stable and all the outputs of followers ultimately track the reference signal, that is, the output of the leader, synchronously. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control protocol is illustrated through the simulation results.

Abstract:Research is part of the cycle of innovation that has made surgery one of the most important contributors to translational research. Surgeons at the coalface are in the ideal position to assess the efficacy of their care and techniques, and to know the right questions to ask in seeking solutions to problems. By combining with researchers, the analysis of surgical challenges becomes the food for research and innovation that drives improvements and advances in patient care that has seen the development of surgically led paradigm changes such as the introduction of coronary bypass surgery, joint replacement surgery and total parenteral nutrition to name a few. The culture of research varies widely, with research being a mandatory requirement for training and practice in some communities, while almost non-existent in others. For example, the requirement for research during surgical training in North America is extremely high, and the long-term implications of this are that over 90% of those who undertake research during training continue this after training. On the other hand, only 3% of those who didn’t do research during training ever do any afterwards. This would explain the dominance of the United States in surgical research and breakthroughs. In Australia, the culture of research in training is only just starting to gather momentum despite policies to support this existing for over 2 decades. On average, less than 3% of an Australian surgeon’s weekly work hours are dedicated to research as compared to counterparts in North America where this may be 10 times higher or more. The drivers of research are many, but for Australian surgeons, the most powerful driver is self-motivation. Resources are few, and many academic departments are not geared to raise the entire field of surgery within their hospitals. Departments are often focused on the major interests of the incumbent Chair. The task of funding surgeondriven research in Australia is in many cases overwhelming and lonely. The lack of opportunity and proper education in research principles and methodology reduces the pool of surgeons who are truly competitive in the granting process. This is reflected in the National Health and Medical Research Council grants where less than 5% of successful grants are surgically led. The article by Li in this edition of the journal highlights a different and novel commitment to research, where the imperative for research comes from above. Not only are surgeons expected to undertake research but also earnings are directly linked with productivity where reductions in salary are made if research targets are not made. As expected, surgeons in this environment are highly productive as reflected in their yearly publication rates. The effectiveness of varying methodologies to engender research is probably site specific and reflects the existing ethos. From a global perspective, the best research come out of institutions or departments where the culture within that institution or department is one of excellence and the pursuit of research is encouraged and regarded as a necessary and important partner to the delivery of quality healthcare. While not all institutions can do everything, what they can offer is good mentorship, top-down commitment to supporting research, engagement of leaders who can inspire research and environments that promote collaboration. As custodians of junior staff careers, it is incumbent on all surgical leaders to help residents, trainees and junior consultants to increase their capabilities because by doing so, they increase the capabilities of the institution and the intellectual power to solve problems. Research is a precious part of service delivery as it maintains the standards, refines appropriateness of care and is the platform for advancing the field.

Abstract:The distributed leader-follower control of multi-agent systems is discussed. Each agent is expressed in a discrete-time and non-linear dynamic model with an unknown parameter and can be affected by its neighbors' history information. For each agent, to identify the parameter, one switching set of the parameter estimates is constructed and the optimal parameter estimate is chosen based on the index switching function. Using the given desired reference signal, the leader agent's control law is designed, and relying on the neighbors' history information, each follower agent's local control law is designed. With the designed distributed tracking adaptive control laws, the whole system tracks the given desired reference signal, and in the face of strong couplings the closed-loop system ultimately reaches an agreement. Finally, by comparing simulations of the control strategy with a normal projection algorithm, the results indicate that the adaptive control method with a switching set of the parameter estimates is effective in improving the control performance.

Abstract:This paper investigates the distributed finite-time tracking problems of networks of multiple Euler-Lagrange dynamics. First of all, a finite-time algorithm is designed on both the relative position and the relative velocity measurements. Then, based on the aforementioned tracking protocols, a bounded control law is proposed in constraint of saturation inputs. Motivated by the bounded control protocol, a new class of finite-time control protocols are developed without relative velocity measurements with the aid of second-order sliding-mode observer. It is theoretically proved that the multiple Euler-Lagrange dynamics can move to be with the target location in finite time under the present control protocol. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithms is illustrated by a numerical simulation.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the consensus and tracking problem of nonlinear multi-agent systems under communication delays, and proposes a distributed predictive control scheme which is independent of the system model and able to actively compensate for communication delays. First, a consensus-related auxiliary variable and its corresponding estimator are innovatively designed to provide a globally consistent value. Then, the idea of dynamic linearization is adopted to obtain the equivalent linear dynamics of nonlinear agents. Furthermore, a distributed predictive controller is designed with the help of the auxiliary variables and the acquired time-varying linear system model. Compared with the existing schemes, the proposed controller compensates for the delayed signals in an active way, makes the traditional model-based predictive control method get rid of the dependence on the accurate system model, and carries out the rolling prediction in a distributed form. A stability analysis of the closed-loop system is given to illustrate the generality of the designed method. Finally, a numerical simulation verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.
