Abstract:We present a survey of more than half a thousand thunderstorm ground enhancements, fluxes of electrons, and gamma rays associated with thunderstorms registered from 2008 to 2022 at Aragats space environmental center. We analyze correlations between various measured parameters characterizing TGEs measured on Aragats. Two special cases of TGE events are considered: one, terminated by nearby lightning flashes, and another one with a sufficiently large ratio of electrons to gamma rays. On the basis of the analysis, we summarize the most important results obtained during 12 years of TGE study, which include: We show the operation of the electron accelerators in the thunderous atmosphere by directly measuring the electron flux during thunderstorms; Quite frequently, TGEs occur prior to lightning flashes and are terminated by them. The energy spectra of avalanche electrons observed on Aragats indicate that the strong electric field region can extend very low above the ground covering a large area on the ground. TGEs originated from multiple relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) starting with seed electrons from the ambient population of cosmic rays, which enter an extended region of the electric field with strength exceeding the critical value.

Abstract:In 2023, a series of intense thunderstorm ground enhancements (TGEs) were recorded on Mount Aragats in Armenia, with seven events exceeding the fair-weather cosmic ray flux by more than 75%. This study comprehensively analyzes these TGEs, investigating the atmospheric conditions and electric fields contributing to their occurrence. Key insights include discovering relationships between TGE electron content and the location of atmospheric electric fields, recovering electron and gamma-ray energy spectra, and the impact of the cloud charge structure. Abstract:To advance high-energy atmospheric physics, studying atmospheric electric fields (AEF) and cosmic ray fluxes as an interconnected system is crucial. At Mt. Argats, simultaneous measurements of particle fluxes, electric fields, weather conditions, and lightning locations have significantly enhanced the validation of models that describe the charge structures of thunderclouds and the mechanics of internal electron accelerators. In 2023, observations of the five largest thunderstorm ground enhancements (TGEs) revealed electric fields exceeding 2.0 kV/cm at elevations just tens of meters above ground-potentially hazardous to rockets and aircraft during launch and charging operations. Utilizing simple yet effective monitoring equipment developed at Aragats, we can mitigate the risks posed by these high-intensity fields. The Mendeley dataset, comprising various measured parameters during thunderstorm activities, enables researchers to perform advanced correlation analysis and uncover complex relationships between these atmospheric phenomena. This study underscores the critical importance of integrated atmospheric studies for ensuring the safety of high-altitude operations and advancing atmospheric science.

Abstract:An unprecedented thunderstorm ground enhancement (TGE) event was recorded on May 23, 2023, at Aragats Mountain, the highest peak in Armenia. This event showcased a maximum flux intensity surpassing 3 million particles per minute per square meter for energies above 0.4 MeV. Distinctly, the fluence of the event was measured at approximately ≈700 particles/cm2. The comprehensive instrumentation at the Aragats research station, including a suite of spectrometers and detectors, enabled precise cross-correlation of measurements. The electron flux at energies exceeding 10 MeV was observed at roughly ≈55,000 particles per minute per square meter. Additional measurements, including cloud base heights and corona discharge detections, validated the intensity of the electric field, reaching approximately 2.1 kV/cm at elevations 50-100 m above ground level. Our observations confirm that TGE is a universal and significant atmospheric event, contributing a substantial flux of high-energy electrons to the global electrical circuit. Integrating such TGE phenomena into Earth's numerical models is imperative, considering their impact on aviation and aerospace operation safety.

Abstract:We analyzed the structure of the Thunderstorm Ground Enhancement using a particle detector network on Aragats. We performed a statistical analysis of the particle flux enhancement time series on a nanosecond time scale using the largest TGE event on record, which occurred on May 23, 2023. Our findings confirm that the TGE combines multiple Extensive Cloud Showers, or particle microbursts, that arrive independently and provide stable particle flux on a second time scale. The electron accelerator, operated by the dipole that emerges in the lower part of the thundercloud, sends a large number of electrons and gamma rays toward the Earths surface that sustains for minutes. The experimental results are supported by simulations of electron multiplication and acceleration in strong atmospheric electric fields.

Abstract:We have discovered a new phenomenon in high-energy atmospheric physics involving an increased fraction of ground-level positrons during a thunderstorm. This increase is linked to developing a lower positively charged region (LPCR) at the thundercloud bottom. When the electric field strength in the lower atmosphere exceeds a critical value, seed electrons from cosmic rays accelerate and multiply, creating relativistic runaway avalanches of millions of electrons and gamma rays with energies up to 50 MeV. The emerging LPCR changes the polarity of the electric field nearly to the Earth's surface, causing electrons to decelerate and positrons to accelerate, increasing the flux of 511 keV "annihilation" gamma rays. By measuring these gamma rays, we can reveal the formation of the LPCR and follow the dynamics of the charge structure in the lower part of the thundercloud. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.062003 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:To catalyze transformative advancements in High-energy Physics in the Atmosphere (HEPA), a comprehensive understanding of particle fluxes, electric fields, and lightning occurrences across atmospheric layers is imperative. This paper elucidates the instrumentation and capabilities of the Aragats Space-Environmental Center (ASEC), which encompasses measurement tools for various cosmic ray species, near-surface electric fields, and lightning events integrated across high-mountain research station at slopes of Mt. Aragats and the highest mountains of Eastern Europe and Germany. Through these measurements, we aim to elucidate models of particle acceleration mechanisms and the charge distribution within the lower atmosphere. We introduce an Advanced Data Extraction Infrastructure (ADEI) integrated with sophisticated statistical analysis tools to facilitate rapid access to this wealth of data. Despite the significance of these atmospheric processes, the intricate interplay between thundercloud electrification, lightning activity, wideband radio emissions, and particle fluxes remains poorly understood. A particularly compelling avenue of inquiry lies in exploring the relationship between high-energy atmospheric phenomena, intracloud electric fields, and lightning initiation. Furthermore, investigations into accelerated structures within geospace plasmas hold promise for shedding light on particle acceleration processes, potentially extending to higher energies within analogous structures in cosmic plasmas. This paper also examines practical methodologies for extracting meaningful physical insights from temporal datasets, such as correlating surges in particle flux intensity with variations in near-surface electric field strength and precipitation patterns. Additionally, we explore the utility of wideband field and interferometer antenna signals in this context, offering valuable avenues for further research and analysis. Through these endeavors, we aim to deepen our understanding of high-energy atmospheric processes and their broader implications for terrestrial and cosmic phenomena.

Abstract:Particle accelerators abound in space plasmas, saturating the cosmos with fully stripped nuclei and gamma rays, with energies surpassing the capabilities of human-made accelerators by orders of magnitude. Upon reaching Earth's atmosphere, these particles trigger extensive air showers (EASs), generating millions of secondary cosmic rays of lower energies. Free electrons from EASs developing in the atmosphere are seeds for atmospheric electron accelerators. Strong atmospheric electric fields (AEFs) evolving during thunderstorms act as accelerators, amplifying the intensity of electrons many times, significantly enlarging the EAS size (number of electrons). Thus, the energy of the primary cosmic ray recovered by EAS size can be significantly overestimated. Recently discovered by high-altitude EAS arrays, PeVatron candidates (ultra–high-energy (UHE) astrophysical gamma-ray sources) must be carefully examined according to the atmospheric conditions during EAS detection. Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory and High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory arrays are located in regions of frequent thunderstorms, and an AEF's strength can reach and surpass the critical strength to start relativistic runaway electron avalanches. A few registered UHE gamma rays from stellar sources can be registered at just this time when the AEF highly enhances the EAS size. Thunderstorm ground enhancements are copiously registered at mountain peaks of Eastern Europe, Germany, and Armenia, with energies well above the threshold energy of EAS array scintillators. Thus, the overestimation of the energy of primary particles is not an exotic process but a consequence of already well-established physical phenomena. Consequently, a report on each registered UHE gamma ray should include the recorded time and corresponding weather conditions.

Abstract:We present the facilities of the Aragats Space Environmental Center in Armenia used during multi-year observations of the thunderstorm ground enhancements (TGEs) and corresponding environmental parameters. We analyze the characteristics of the scintillation detectors, operated on Aragats, and describe the coordinated detection of TGEs by the network of scintillation detectors, field meters, and environmental parameters. By using a fast synchronized data acquisition system we reveal correlations of the multivariate data on time scales from second to nanosecond which allow us to gain insight into the TGE and lightning origin and their interrelations.

Abstract:Various particle accelerators operate in the space plasmas, filling the Galaxy with high energy particles, primary cosmic rays. Reaching the atmosphere of the earth, these particles originate extensive air showers consisting of millions of elementary particles, secondary cosmic rays, covering several large areas on the ground. During thunderstorms, strong electric fields modulate the energy spectra of secondary particles and, consequently, originate short and long particle bursts. Impulse amplifications of particle fluxes, the thunderstorm ground enhancements, TGEs manifest themselves as peaks in the time series of count rates of particle detectors, which coincide with thunderstorms, during which free electrons are accelerating and multiplied, forming electron gamma ray avalanches. Thus, electron accelerators emerging in thunderous atmospheres can significantly alter the frequency of EAS triggers.

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract:Thunderstorms produce strong electric fields over regions on the order of kilometer. The corresponding electric potential differences are on the order of 100 MV. Secondary cosmic rays reaching these regions may be significantly accelerated and even amplified in relativistic runaway avalanche processes. These phenomena lead to enhancements of the high-energy background radiation observed by detectors on the ground and on board aircraft. Moreover, intense submillisecond gamma-ray bursts named terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) produced in thunderstorms are detected from low Earth orbit satellites. When passing through the atmosphere, these gamma-rays are recognized to produce secondary relativistic electrons and positrons rapidly trapped in the geomagnetic field and injected into the near-Earth space environment. In the present work, we attempt to give an overview of the current state of research on high-energy phenomena associated with thunderstorms.

Abstract:A correlation between the secondary cosmic ray flux and the near-earth electric field intensity, measured during thunderstorms, has been found by analyzing the data of the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage air shower array located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China). The counting rates of showers with different particle multiplicities, have been found to be strongly dependent upon the intensity and polarity of the electric field measured during the course of 15 thunderstorms. In negative electric fields (i.e. accelerating negative charges downwards), the counting rates increase with increasing electric field strength. In positive fields, the rates decrease with field intensity until a certain value of the field EFmin (whose value depends on the event multiplicity), above which the rates begin increasing. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we found that this peculiar behavior can be well described by the presence of an electric field in a layer of thickness of a few hundred meters in the atmosphere above the detector, which accelerates/decelerates the secondary shower particles of opposite charge, modifying the number of particles with energy exceeding the detector threshold. These results, for the first time, give a consistent explanation for the origin of the variation of the electron/positron flux observed for decades by high altitude cosmic ray detectors during thunderstorms.

Abstract:The influence of a charged cloud the electric field on chemical processes in the air at heights of 95-100 km has been studied. Numerical simulation of the plasma at these altitudes is performed, the concentrations of main charged particles are determined under the conditions of the electric field created by the unipolar charge of the cloud. It is shown that the electric fields of the clouds after the discharges of linear lightning affect the electron concentration at these altitudes.

Abstract:Recent results link relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREA) accelerated by the electric field in thunderclouds to high-energy atmospheric phenomena such as the Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes (TGF). Research shows that the mere existence of runaway electron avalanches is not sufficient to generate TGF. In an attempt to settle this issue, a model of a relativistic feedback mechanism was suggested. In this paper, an analytical kinetic revision of the relativistic feedback mechanism is provided. It was shown that positron and gamma feedback mechanisms arise naturally from dynamics equations of RREA initiated independently by positrons and gamma-quanta. Establishing both mechanisms turned out to be enough to evaluate complete relativistic feedback. The electron avalanche multiplication factor is obtained, followed by a study of the minimal conditions of self-sustainable relativistic feedback in homogeneous electric fields and a discussion of the role of this mechanism in TGF and lightning initiation problems.

Abstract:Features of the manifestations of various sources of disturbances in the atmospheric electric field at the Tien-Shan high-mountain station have been studied, and the statistical relationship between solar and thunderstorm activity has been established. Air currents arising over the ocean, having overcome the mountain gorges of the Himalayas, carry moisture to the Northern Tien-Shan and determine the weather features and thunderstorm activity at the Tien-Shan high-mountain station. It was established that the maximum and minimum thunderstorm activity at the Tien-Shan high-mountain station corresponds to the distribution curve of daily thunderstorm activity for the Asia–Australia region. The investigation showed that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) affect the atmospheric electric field by increasing or decreasing its level or causing its fluctuations, depending on the features of manifestations in the near-Earth space and in the Earth's magnetosphere. In at least 70% of cases, thunderstorm activity was observed with a 1–2-day delay after impact on the Earth's magnetosphere by CMEs and HSSs. A number of cases were studied when thunderstorm activity was observed in a quiet geomagnetic field. In these cases, an increase in the values of fmin (the minimum frequency of reflection from the ionosphere) and foEs (the critical frequency of the sporadic E layer) was observed, which indicated an increase in the level of radio wave absorption in the ionospheric D-region and the level of electron density at altitudes of 100–120 km.
