Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been phenomenologically classified into long and short populations based on the observed bimodal distribution of duration 1 . Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observations in recent years have revealed that in general long GRBs originate from massive star core collapse events 2 , whereas short GRBs originate from binary neutron star mergers 3 . It has been known that the duration criterion is sometimes unreliable, and multi-wavelength criteria are needed to identify the physical origin of a particular GRB 4 . Some apparently long GRBs have been suggested to have a neutron star merger origin 5 , whereas some apparently short GRBs have been attributed to genuinely long GRBs 6 whose short, bright emission is slightly above the detector’s sensitivity threshold. Here, we report the comprehensive analysis of the multi-wavelength data of the short, bright GRB 200826A. Characterized by a sharp pulse, this burst shows a duration of 1 second and no evidence of an underlying longer-duration event. Its other observational properties such as its spectral behaviours, total energy and host galaxy offset are, however, inconsistent with those of other short GRBs believed to originate from binary neutron star mergers. Rather, these properties resemble those of long GRBs. This burst confirms the existence of short-duration GRBs with stellar core-collapse origin 4 , and presents some challenges to the existing models.
Making a Short Gamma-Ray Burst from a Long One: Implications for the Nature of GRB 060614

Abstract:The absence of a supernova accompanying the nearby long GRB 060614 poses a great puzzle about the progenitor of this event and challenges the current GRB classification scheme. This burst displays a short-hard emission episode followed by extended soft emission with strong spectral evolution. Noticing that this burst has an isotropic gamma-ray energy only ~8 times that of GRB 050724, a good candidate of merger-type short GRBs, we generate a "pseudo"burst that is ~8 times less energetic than GRB 060614 based on the spectral properties of GRB 060614 and the Ep ∝ E (Amati) relation. We find that this pseudoburst would have been detected by BATSE as a marginal short-duration GRB and would have properties in the Swift BAT and XRT bands similar to GRB 050724. This suggests that GRB 060614 is likely a more intense event in the traditional short-hard GRB category. Events like GRB 060614 that seem to defy the traditional short versus long classification of GRBs may require modification of our classification terminology for GRBs. By analogy with supernova classifications, we suggest that GRBs be classified into Type I (typically short and associated with old populations) and Type II (typically long and associated with young populations). We propose that GRB 060614 belongs to Type I and predict that similar events will be detected in elliptical galaxies.

Abstract:A variety of arguments suggest that the most common form of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), those longer than a few seconds, involve the formation of black holes in supernova-like events. Two kinds of ``collapsar'' models are discussed, those in which the black hole forms promptly - a second or so after iron core collapse - and those in which formation occurs later, following ``fallback'' over a period of minutes to hours. In most cases, extraction of energy from a rapidly accreting disk (and a rapidly rotating black hole) is achieved by magnetohydrodynamical processes, although neutrino-powered models remain viable in cases where the accretion rate is >0.05 solar masses per second. GRBs are but one observable phenomenon accompanying black hole birth and other possibilities are discussed, some of which (long, faint GRBs and soft x-ray transients) may await discovery. Since they all involve black holes of similar mass accreting one to several M\sun, collapsars have a nearly standard total energy, around 10**52 erg, but both the fraction of that energy ejected as highly relativistic matter and the distribution of that energy with angle can be highly variable. An explanation is presented why inferred GRB luminosity might correlate inversely with time scales and arguments are given against the production of ordinary GRBs by supergiant stars.

Abstract:The long and the short of itThe tidy classification system that divided γ-ray bursts (GRBs) into long-duration busts (lasting more than two seconds) and short may have had its day. The final nail in its coffin may be GRB 060614. Discovered on 14 June 2006 by the Burst Alert Telescope on-board the Swift satellite, this burst was long, at 102 seconds, but as reported in a clutch of papers in this issue, it has a number of properties, including the absence of an accompanying supernova, that were previously considered diagnostic of a 'short' GRB. The hunt is now on for a classification system to take account of the diversity now apparent in GRBs. In the accompanying News & Views, Bing Zhang suggests that the answer may be to adopt a Type I/Type II classification similar to that used for supernovae.

Gamma-Ray Bursts - When Theory Meets Observations

Abstract:Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the brightest objects observed. They are also the most relativistic objects known so far. GRBs occur when an ultrarelativisitic ejecta is slowed down by internal shocks within the flow. Relativistic particles accelerated within these shocks emit the observed gamma-rays by a combination of synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. External shocks with the circumstellar matter slow down further the ejecta and produce the afterglow, which lasts for months. Comparison of the predictions of this fireball model with observations confirm a relativistic macroscopic motion with a Lorentz factor of $\Gamma \ge 100$. Breaks in the light curves of the afterglow indicate that GRBs are beamed with typical opening angles of a few degrees. The temporal variability of the gamma-rays signal provide us with the best indirect evidence on the nature of the ``internal engine'' that powers the GRBs and accelerates the relativistic ejecta, suggesting accretion of a massive disk onto a newborn black hole: GRBs are the birth cries of these black holes. Two of the most promising models: Neutron Star Mergers and Collapars lead naturally to this scenario.

Abstract:The recent discovery of a kilonova from the long duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 211211A, challenges classification schemes based on temporal information alone. Gamma-ray properties of GRB 211211A reveal an extreme event, which stands out among both short and long GRBs. We find very short variations (few ms) in the lightcurve of GRB 211211A and estimate ~1000 for the Lorentz factor of the outflow. We discuss the relevance of the short variations in identifying similar long GRBs resulting from compact mergers. Our findings indicate that in future gravitational wave follow-up campaigns, some long duration GRBs should be treated as possible strong gravitational wave counterparts.

Are Gamma-Ray Bursts a Standard Energy Reservoir?

Abstract:One of the most important discoveries in the observation of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is that the total energy emitted by a GRB in gamma-rays has a very narrow distribution around 10^51 erg, which has led people to claim that GRBs are standard energy explosions. As people made the claim they have ignored the selection biases which must be important since GRB observations are strongly fluence or flux-limited. In this paper we show that, when the selection effects are considered, the intrinsic distribution of the GRB energy can be very broad. The number of faint GRBs has been significantly underestimated because of the fluence or flux limit. The bright part of the distribution has been affected by another important selection effect arising from the beaming of GRB jets, which is instrument-independent and caused by the fact that brighter GRBs tend to have smaller jet angles and hence smaller probabilities to be detected. Our finding indicates that GRBs are not a standard energy reservoir, and challenges the proposal that GRBs can be used as standard candles to probe cosmology.
Exploring Origin of Ultra-Long Gamma-ray Bursts: Lessons from GRB 221009A

Abstract:The brightest Gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever, GRB 221009A, displays ultra-long GRB (ULGRB) characteristics, with a prompt emission duration exceeding 1000 s. To constrain the origin and central engine of this unique burst, we analyze its prompt and afterglow characteristics and compare them to the established set of similar GRBs. To achieve this, we statistically examine a nearly complete sample of Swift-detected GRBs with measured redshifts. Categorizing the sample to Bronze, Silver, and Gold by fitting a Gaussian function to the log-normal of T$_{90}$ duration distribution and considering three sub-samples respectively to 1, 2, and 3 times of the standard deviation to the mean value. GRB 221009A falls into the Gold sub-sample. Our analysis of prompt emission and afterglow characteristics aims to identify trends between the three burst groups. Notably, the Gold sub-sample (a higher likelihood of being ULGRB candidates) suggests a collapsar scenario with a hyper-accreting black hole as a potential central engine, while a few GRBs (GRB 060218, GRB 091024A, and GRB 100316D) in our Gold sub-sample favor a magnetar. Late-time near-IR (NIR) observations from 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) rule out the presence of any bright supernova associated with GRB 221009A in the Gold sub-sample. To further constrain the physical properties of ULGRB progenitors, we employ the tool MESA to simulate the evolution of low-metallicity massive stars with different initial rotations. The outcomes suggest that rotating ($\Omega \geq 0.2\,\Omega_{\rm c}$) massive stars could potentially be the progenitors of ULGRBs within the considered parameters and initial inputs to MESA.

A Simple Two-Parameter Characterization of Gamma-Ray Burst Time Histories

Abstract:A simple scheme delineates Long GRBs with similar time histories using the Internal Luminosity Function power-law index and the spectral lag. Several generalizations are made about time history morphologies: 1) GRBs with long spectral lags contain fewer pulses that are broader than those found in bursts with short spectral lags, 2) short-lag bursts with small ILF power-law indices have many narrow pulses and are highly variable, while long-lag bursts with small ILF power-law indices are characterized by broad, smooth pulses and have low variability. GRB time history morphologies primarily identify intrinsic rather than extrinsic characteristics based on correlations with gamma-ray luminosity, afterglow luminosity, and numbers of pulses. These characteristics result because internal relativistic effects due to bulk Lorentz factor are larger than cosmological effects, and because the numbers and shapes of pulses indicate different efficiencies and forms of GRB energy release. Single-pulsed GRBs are characterized either by large ILF power indices (indicating a range of jet opening angles and Lorentz factors, with a FRED pulse shape), or they have long lags (large jet opening angles with low Lorentz factors, with either a FRED pulse shape or an unpeaked, smooth pulse shape). They also have lower-luminosity afterglows than multi-pulsed GRBs. GRBs with simple time histories are often associated with Type Ibc supernovae. This suggests that some single-pulsed GRBs contain single, beamed blast waves that are similar to and have characteristics that overlap with those of many supernovae. Such a connection may not exist between multi-pulsed GRBs and supernovae.

Properties of Gamma-Ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae and Kilonovae

Abstract:We systematically compare the temporal and spectral properties of 53 Supernova (SN)-associated and 15 Kilonova (KN)-associated Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We find that the spectral parameters of both types GRBs are identically and lognormally distributed, consistent with those normal GRBs. The bolometric luminosities of SN/GRBs and KN/GRBs have a triple form with the corresponding break luminosities of SN/GRBs are roughly two orders of magnitude larger than those of KN/GRBs. We build the power-law relations between the spectral lag and the luminosity of prompt $\gamma$-rays with indices of $-1.43\pm0.33$ for SN/GRBs and $-2.17\pm0.57$ for KN/GRBs in the laboratory frame, which are respectively coincident with the rest-frame values. We verify that both SN/GRBs and KN/GRBs comply with their own Amati relations that match those of long and short GRBs, respectively. Analyzing X-ray afterglows with good plateau segments, we build the power-law relations between the X-ray luminosity and the plateau time with an index of $-1.12\pm0.17$ for KN/GRBs and $-1.08\pm0.22$ for SN/GRBs, which can be well explained by the relativistic shock driven by an energy injection. The plots of luminosity-lag, Amati relation and luminosity-time show heavy overlap between the two types of GRBs, implying that they might share the same radiation mechanism despite originating from different progenitors or central engines.

Gamma-ray Bursts - A Puzzle Being Resolved

Abstract:For a few seconds a gamma-ray burst (GRB) becomes the brightest object in the Universe, over-shining the rest of the Universe combined! Clearly this reflects extreme conditions that are fascinating and worth exploring. The recent discovery of GRB afterglow have demonstrated that we are on the right track towards the resolution of this long standing puzzle. These observations have confirmed the relativistic fireball model (more specifically the internal-external shocks model). The prompt optical emission seen in GRB 990123 have demonstrated that GRBs involve ultra-relativistic motion. The breaks in the light curves of GRB 990123 and GRB 990510 and the peculiar light curves of GRB 980519 and GRB 980326 disclosed that these GRBs are beamed. I examine these recent developments and discuss their implications to the models of the source. I argue that the current understanding implies that GRBs signal the birth of stellar mass black holes.

Abstract:GRB 230812B, detected by the Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) constellation mission, is an exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a duration of only 3 seconds. Sitting near the traditional boundary ($\sim$ 2 s) between long and short GRBs, GRB 230812B is notably associated with a supernova (SN), indicating a massive star progenitor. This makes it a rare example of a short-duration GRB resulting from stellar collapse. Our analysis, using a time-evolving synchrotron model, suggests that the burst has an emission radius of approximately $10^{14.5}$~cm. We propose that the short duration of GRB 230812B is due to the combined effects of the central engine's activity time and the time required for the jet to break through the stellar envelope. Our findings provide another case that challenges the conventional view that short-duration GRBs originate exclusively from compact object mergers, demonstrating that a broader range of durations exists for GRBs arising from the collapse of massive stars.

High-Energy Gamma-Ray Afterglows from Low-Luminosity Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:The observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) such as 980425, 031203 and 060218, with luminosities much lower than those of other classic bursts, lead to the definition of a new class of GRBs -- low-luminosity GRBs. The nature of the outflow responsible for them is not clear yet. Two scenarios have been suggested: one is the conventional relativistic outflow with initial Lorentz factor of order of $\Gamma_0\ga 10$ and the other is a trans-relativistic outflow with $\Gamma_0\simeq 1-2$. Here we compare the high energy gamma-ray afterglow emission from these two different models, taking into account both synchrotron self inverse-Compton scattering (SSC) and the external inverse-Compton scattering due to photons from the cooling supernova or hypernova envelope (SNIC). We find that the conventional relativistic outflow model predicts a relatively high gamma-ray flux from SSC at early times ($<10^4 {\rm s}$ for typical parameters) with a rapidly decaying light curve, while in the trans-relativistic outflow model, one would expect a much flatter light curve of high-energy gamma-ray emission at early times, which could be dominated by both the SSC emission and SNIC emission, depending on the properties of the underlying supernova and the shock parameter $\epsilon_e$ and $\epsilon_B$. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope should be able to distinguish between the two models in the future.
Unveiling the Progenitors of a Population of Likely Peculiar Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:Traditionally, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are classified as long and short GRBs, with T 90 = 2 s being the threshold duration. Generally, long-duration GRBs (LGRBs; T 90 > 2 s) are associated with the collapse of massive stars, and short-duration (SGRBs; T 90 < 2 s) are associated with compact binary mergers involving at least one neutron star. However, the existence of a population of so-called "peculiar GRBs"—i.e., LGRBs originating from mergers or long Type I GRBs, and SGRBs originating from collapsars or short Type II GRBs—has challenged the traditional paradigm of GRB classification. Finding more peculiar GRBs may help to give more insight into this issue. In this work, we analyze the properties of machine-learning-identified long Type I GRB and short Type II GRB candidates, long GRBs-I and short GRBs-II (the so-called "peculiar GRBs"). We find that long GRBs-I almost always exhibit properties similar to Type I GRBs, which suggests that mergers may indeed produce GRBs with T 90 > 2 s. Furthermore, according to the probability given by the redshift distribution, short GRBs-II almost exhibit properties similar to Type II GRBs. This suggests that the populations of short Type II GRBs are not scarce and that they are hidden in a large number of samples without redshifts, which is unfavorable for the interpretation that the jet progression leads to a missed main emission.

Abstract:It has been observationally established that supernovae (SNe) of Type Ic produce long duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and that neutron star mergers generate short hard GRBs. SN-Less GRBs presumably originate in a phase transition of a neutron star in a high mass X-ray binary. How these phenomena actually generate GRBs is debated. The fireball and cannonball models of GRBs and their afterglows have been widely confronted with the huge observational data, with their defenders claiming success. The claims, however, may reflect multiple choices and the use of many adjustable parameters, rather than the validity of the models. Only a confrontation of key falsifiable predictions of the models with solid observational data can test their validity. Such critical tests are reviewed in this report.

Abstract:The radiation mechanism (thermal photosphere or magnetic synchrotron) and the progenitor of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are under hot debate. Recently discovered, the prompt long-duration (∼10 s, normally from the collapse of massive stars) property of GRB 211211A strongly conflicts with its association with a kilonova (normally from the merger of two compact objects, NS–NS, NS–BH, or NS–WD, duration ≲2 s). In this paper, we find that the probability photosphere model with a structured jet can satisfactorily explain this peculiar long duration, through the duration stretching effect (∼3 times) on the intrinsic longer (∼3 s) duration of an NS–BH merger, the observed empirical 2SBPL spectrum (with soft low-energy index α of ∼−1), and its evolution. In addition, much evidence of the NS–BH merger origin is found, especially the good fit of the afterglow-subtracted optical−near-IR light curves by the significant thermal cocoon emission and the sole thermal "red" kilonova component. Finally, a convincing new explanation for the X-ray afterglow plateau is revealed.

Abstract:For gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with durations greater than two seconds (so-called long GRBs), the intrinsic prompt gamma-ray emission appears, on average, to last longer for bursts at lower redshifts. We explore the nature of this duration-redshift anti-correlation, describing systems and conditions in which this cosmological evolution could arise. In particular, we explore its dependence on metallicity of a massive star progenitor, as we can securely count on the average stellar metallicity to increase with decreasing redshift. Although higher metallicity/lower redshift stars lose mass and angular momentum through line-driven winds, in some cases these stars are able to form more extended accretion disks when they collapse, potentially leading to longer duration GRBs. We also examine how this duration-redshift trend may show up in interacting binary models composed of a massive star and compact object companion, recently suggested to be the progenitors of radio bright GRBs. Under certain conditions, mass loss and equation of state effects from higher metallicity, lower redshift massive stars can decrease the binary separation. This can then lead to spin-up of the massive star and allow for a longer duration GRB upon the massive star's collapse. Finally, the duration-redshift trend may also be supported by a relatively larger population of small-separation binaries born in situ at low redshift.
On the origin of the gamma-ray burst GRB221009A

Abstract:We analyze a bright and rare burst, GRB20221009A, showing through NED data that the angular distance between GRB221009A and the supernova SN 2022xiw is almost the same angular separation with galactic objects, i.e., the SN-GRB connection at z = 0.151 is not robust. Gamma rays with up to 18 TeV detected in association with the GRB constrain the attenuation to which they are subject at cosmological distances. GR221009A is out of scale relative to other long-lasting GRBs and comes from a region with an excess of soft gamma repeaters (SGR), suggesting that GRB221009A is a giant SGR, with energy release Eiso aproximately 10^{44} erg. The GRBs propagation across the galactic plane reinforces this assumption.

Abstract:It is generally believed that long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with massive star core collapse 1 , whereas short-duration GRBs are associated with mergers of compact star binaries 2 . However, growing observations 3,4,5,6 have suggested that oddball GRBs do exist, and several criteria (prompt emission properties, supernova/kilonova associations and host galaxy properties) rather than burst duration only are needed to classify GRBs physically 7 . A previously reported long-duration burst, GRB 060614 (ref. 3 ), could be viewed as a short GRB with extended emission if it were observed at a larger distance 8 and was associated with a kilonova-like feature 9 . As a result, it belongs to the type I (compact star merger) GRB category and is probably of binary neutron star (NS) merger origin. Here we report a peculiar long-duration burst, GRB 211211A, whose prompt emission properties in many aspects differ from all known type I GRBs, yet its multiband observations suggest a non-massive-star origin. In particular, substantial excess emission in both optical and near-infrared wavelengths has been discovered (see also ref. 10 ), which resembles kilonova emission, as observed in some type I GRBs. These observations point towards a new progenitor type of GRBs. A scenario invoking a white dwarf (WD)–NS merger with a post-merger magnetar engine provides a self-consistent interpretation for all the observations, including prompt gamma rays, early X-ray afterglow, as well as the engine-fed 11,12 kilonova emission.
