Abstract:Graphical congestion games provide powerful models for a wide range of scenarios where spatially distributed individuals share resources. Understanding when graphical congestion game dynamics converge to pure Nash equilibria yields important engineering insights into when spatially distributed individuals can reach a stable resource allocation. In this paper, we study the convergence dynamics of graphical congestion games where players can use multiple resources simultaneously. We show that when the players are free to use any subset of resources the game always converges to a pure Nash equilibrium in polynomial time via lazy best response updates. When the collection of sets of resources available to each player is a matroid, we show that pure Nash equilibria may not exist in the most general case. However, if the resources are homogenous, the game can converge to a Nash equilibrium in polynomial time.

Abstract:We prove that every finite two-person positive shortest path game has a Nash equilibrium (NE) in pure stationary strategies, which can be computed in polynomial time. The existence result holds also for graphs with finite out-degrees. Moreover, we prove that a terminal NE exists provided at least one of two players can guarantee reaching a terminal. If no one can do it, in other words, if each of two players can cut all terminals from the initial position $s$, then, obviously, a cyclic NE exists, although its cost is infinite for both players, since we restrict ourselves to positive games. We conjecture that a terminal NE exists too, provided there exists a directed path from $s$ to a terminal. However, this is open.

On Nash-solvability of n-person graphical games under Markov's and a priori realizations

Abstract:We consider graphical $n$-person games with perfect information that have no Nash equilibria in pure stationary strategies. Solving these games in mixed strategies, we introduce probabilistic distributions in all non-terminal positions. The corresponding plays can be analyzed under two different basic assumptions: Markov's and a priori realizations. The former one guarantees existence of a uniformly best response of each player in every situation. Nevertheless, Nash equilibrium may fail to exist even in mixed strategies. The classical Nash theorem is not applicable, since Markov's realizations may result in the limit distributions and effective payoff functions that are not continuous. The a priori realization does not share many nice properties of the Markov one (for example, existence of the uniformly best response) but in return, Nash's theorem is applicable. We illustrate both realizations in details by two examples with $2$ and $3$ players and also provide some general results.

Abstract:We present a polynomial time reduction from gap-3LIN to label cover with 2-to-1 constraints. In the “yes” case the fraction of satisfied constraints is at least 1 −ε, and in the “no” case we show that this fraction is at most ε, assuming a certain (new) combinatorial hypothesis on the Grassmann graph. In other words, we describe a combinatorial hypothesis that implies the 2-to-1 conjecture with imperfect completeness. The companion submitted paper [Dinur, Khot, Kindler, Minzer and Safra, STOC 2018] makes some progress towards proving this hypothesis. Our work builds on earlier work by a subset of the authors [Khot, Minzer and Safra, STOC 2017] where a slightly different hypothesis was used to obtain hardness of approximating vertex cover to within factor of √2−ε. The most important implication of this work is (assuming the hypothesis) an NP-hardness gap of 1/2−ε vs. ε for unique games. In addition, we derive optimal NP-hardness for approximating the max-cut-gain problem, NP-hardness of coloring an almost 4-colorable graph with any constant number of colors, and the same √2−ε NP-hardness for approximate vertex cover that was already obtained based on a slightly different hypothesis. Recent progress towards proving our hypothesis [Barak, Kothari and Steurer, ECCC TR18-077], [Dinur, Khot, Kindler, Minzer and Safra, STOC 2018] directly implies some new unconditional NP-hardness results. These include new points of NP-hardness for unique games and for 2-to-1 and 2-to-2 games. More recently, the full version of our hypothesis was proven [Khot, Minzer and Safra, ECCC TR18-006].

Abstract:In this paper, I prove the existence of a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium for a large class of games with nonconvex strategy spaces. Specifically, if each player's strategies form a compact, connected Euclidean neighborhood retract and if all best-response correspondences are null-homotopic, then the game has a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. As an application, I show how this result can prove the fundamental theorem of algebra.

Abstract:It is wel-known that Nash considered the n-person noncooperative game with each player having finite strategic set and proved the celebrated existence result of Nash equilibrium point (in mixed strategies). This paper investigates the n-person noncooperative game with each player having infinite strategic set. By considering these infinite strategic as complete metric spaces and based on a new finite equilibrium system, we obtain new existence result of Nash equilibrium. Then an algorithm is given to compute Nash equilibrium points and its convergence is proved.
Settling Some Open Problems on 2-Player Symmetric Nash Equilibria

Abstract:Over the years, researchers have studied the complexity of several decision versions of Nash equilibrium in (symmetric) two-player games (bimatrix games). To the best of our knowledge, the last remaining open problem of this sort is the following; it was stated by Papadimitriou in 2007: find a non-symmetric Nash equilibrium (NE) in a symmetric game. We show that this problem is NP-complete and the problem of counting the number of non-symmetric NE in a symmetric game is #P-complete. In 2005, Kannan and Theobald defined the "rank of a bimatrix game" represented by matrices (A, B) to be rank(A+B) and asked whether a NE can be computed in rank 1 games in polynomial time. Observe that the rank 0 case is precisely the zero sum case, for which a polynomial time algorithm follows from von Neumann's reduction of such games to linear programming. In 2011, Adsul et. al. obtained an algorithm for rank 1 games; however, it does not solve the case of symmetric rank 1 games. We resolve this problem.

One n Remains to Settle the Tree Conjecture

Abstract:In the famous network creation game of Fabrikant et al. a set of agents play a game to build a connected graph. The $n$ agents form the vertex set $V$ of the graph and each vertex $v\in V$ buys a set $E_v$ of edges inducing a graph $G=(V,\bigcup\limits_{v\in V} E_v)$. The private objective of each vertex is to minimize the sum of its building cost (the cost of the edges it buys) plus its connection cost (the total distance from itself to every other vertex). Given a cost of $\alpha$ for each individual edge, a long-standing conjecture, called the tree conjecture, states that if $\alpha > n$ then every Nash equilibrium graph in the game is a spanning tree. After a plethora of work, it is known that the conjecture holds for any $\alpha>3n-3$. In this paper we prove the tree conjecture holds for $\alpha>2n$. This reduces by half the open range for $\alpha$ with only $[n, 2n)$ remaining in order to settle the conjecture.

Abstract:This paper generalizes the Fan-Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz (FKKM) lemma to the case of weak topology, and obtains the Ky Fan minimax inequality defined on non-empty non-compact convex subsets in reflexive Banach spaces, then we apply it to game theory and obtain Nash's existence theorem for non-compact strategy sets, together with John von Neumann's existence theorem in two-player zero-sum games.

Abstract:We construct a finite deterministic graphical (DG) game without Nash equilibria in pure stationary strategies. This game has 3 players $I=\{1,2,3\}$ and 5 outcomes: 2 terminal $a_1$ and $a_2$ and 3 cyclic. Furthermore, for 2 players a terminal outcome is the best: $a_1$ for player 3 and $a_2$ for player 1. Hence, the rank vector $r$ is at most $(1,2,1)$. Here $r_i$ is the number of terminal outcomes that are worse than some cyclic outcome for the player $i \in I$. This is a counterexample to conjecture ``Catch 22" from the paper ``On Nash-solvability of finite $n$-person DG games, Catch 22" (2021) <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.06278" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.06278">arXiv:2111.06278</a>, according to which, at least 2 entries of $r$ are at least 2 for any NE-free game. However, Catch 22 remains still open for the games with a unique cyclic outcome, not to mention a weaker (and more important) conjecture claiming that an $n$-person finite DG game has a Nash equilibrium (in pure stationary strategies) when $r = (0^n)$, that is, all $n$ entries of $r$ are 0; in other words, when the following condition holds: $\qquad\bullet$ ($C_0$) any terminal outcome is better than every cyclic one for each player. A game is play-once if each player controls a unique position. It is known that any play-once game satisfying ($C_0$) has a Nash equilibrium. We give a new and very short proof of this statement. Yet, not only conjunction but already disjunction of the above two conditions may be sufficient for Nash-solvability. This is still open.

Polynomial algorithms computing two lexicographically safe Nash equilibria in finite two-person games with tight game forms given by oracles

Abstract:In 1975 the first author proved that every finite tight two-person game form $g$ is Nash-solvable, that is, for every payoffs $u$ and $w$ of two players the obtained game $(g;u,w)$, in normal form, has a Nash equilibrium (NE) in pure strategies. This result was extended in several directions; here we strengthen it further. We construct two special NE realized by a lexicographically safe (lexsafe) strategy of one player and a best response of the other. We obtain a polynomial algorithm computing these lexsafe NE. This is trivial when game form $g$ is given explicitly. Yet, in applications $g$ is frequently realized by an oracle $\cO$ such that size of $g$ is exponential in size $|\cO|$ of $\cO$. We assume that game form $g = g(\cO)$ generated by $\cO$ is tight and that an arbitrary {\em win-lose game} $(g;u,w)$ (in which payoffs $u$ and $w$ are zero-sum and take only values $\pm 1$) can be solved, in time polynomial in $|\cO|$. These assumptions allow us to construct an algorithm computing two (one for each player) lexsafe NE in time polynomial in $|\cO|$. We consider four types of oracles known in the literature and show that all four satisfy the above assumptions.

Abstract:For any odd integer n≥3 a board (of size n) is a square array of n×n positions with a simple rule of how to move between positions. The goal of the game we introduce is to find a path from the upper left corner of a board to the center of the square. If there exists such a path we say that the board is solvable, and we say that the length of this board is the length of a shortest such path. There are 8n2 different boards. We discuss various properties of these boards and present some questions and conjectures. In particular, we show that for n≫1 roughly 38 of the boards are solvable, and that the expected length of a random solvable board tends to 20996, i.e., very big solvable boards tend to have extremely short solutions.

A Stable-Set Bound and Maximal Numbers of Nash Equilibria in Bimatrix Games

Abstract:Quint and Shubik (1997) conjectured that a non-degenerate n-by-n game has at most 2^n-1 Nash equilibria in mixed strategies. The conjecture is true for n at most 4 but false for n=6 or larger. We answer it positively for the remaining case n=5, which had been open since 1999. The problem can be translated to a combinatorial question about the vertices of a pair of simple n-polytopes with 2n facets. We introduce a novel obstruction based on the index of an equilibrium, which states that equilibrium vertices belong to two equal-sized disjoint stable sets of the graph of the polytope. This bound is verified directly using the known classification of the 159,375 combinatorial types of dual neighborly polytopes in dimension 5 with 10 facets. Non-neighborly polytopes are analyzed with additional combinatorial techniques where the bound is used for their disjoint facets.

Abstract:We study Nash equilibria in the network creation game of Fabrikant et al.[10]. In this game a vertex can buy an edge to another vertex for a cost of $\alpha$, and the objective of each vertex is to minimize the sum of the costs of the edges it purchases plus the sum of the distances to every other vertex in the resultant network. A long-standing conjecture states that if $\alpha\ge n$ then every Nash equilibrium in the game is a spanning tree. We prove the conjecture holds for any $\alpha>3n-3$.

Abstract:Given a graph $G$, a set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a general position set if no triple of vertices from $S$ lie on a common shortest path in $G$. The general position achievement/avoidance game is played on a graph $G$ by players A and B who alternately select vertices of $G$. A selection of a vertex by a player is a legal move if it has not been selected before and the set of selected vertices so far forms a general position set of $G$. The player who picks the last vertex is the winner in the general position achievement game and is the loser in the avoidance game. In this paper, we prove that the general position achievement/avoidance games are PSPACE-complete even on graphs with diameter at most 4. For this, we prove that the \textit{misère} play of the classical Node Kayles game is also PSPACE-complete. As positive results, we obtain linear time algorithms to decide the winning player of the general position avoidance game in rook's graphs, grids, cylinders, and lexicographic products with complete second factors.

Abstract:Computing Nash equilibrium in multi-agent games is a longstanding challenge at the interface of game theory and computer science. It is well known that a general normal form game in N players and k strategies requires exponential space simply to write down. This Curse of Multi-Agents prompts the study of succinct games which can be written down efficiently. A canonical example of a succinct game is the graphical game which models players as nodes in a graph interacting with only their neighbors in direct analogy with markov random fields. Graphical games have found applications in wireless, financial, and social networks. However, computing the nash equilbrium of graphical games has proven challenging. Even for polymatrix games, a model where payoffs to an agent can be written as the sum of payoffs of interactions with the agent's neighbors, it has been shown that computing an epsilon approximate nash equilibrium is PPAD hard for epsilon smaller than a constant. The focus of this work is to circumvent this computational hardness by considering average case graph models i.e random graphs. We provide a quasipolynomial time approximation scheme (QPTAS) for computing an epsilon approximate nash equilibrium of polymatrix games on random graphs with edge density greater than poly(k, 1/epsilon, ln(N))$ with high probability. Furthermore, with the same runtime we can compute an epsilon-approximate Nash equilibrium that epsilon-approximates the maximum social welfare of any nash equilibrium of the game. Our primary technical innovation is an "accelerated rounding" of a novel hierarchical convex program for the nash equilibrium problem. Our accelerated rounding also yields faster algorithms for Max-2CSP on the same family of random graphs, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We study two natural problems about rational behaviors in multiplayer non-zero-sum sequential infinite duration games played on graphs: checking problems, that consist in deciding whether a strategy profile, defined by a Mealy machine, is rational; and rational verification, that consists in deciding whether all the rational answers to a given strategy satisfy some specification. We give the complexities of those problems for two major concepts of rationality: Nash equilibria and subgame-perfect equilibria, and for five major classes of payoff functions: parity, mean-payoff, quantitative reachability, energy, and discounted-sum.

On two conjectures about the intersection of longest paths and cycles

Abstract:A conjecture attributed to Smith states that every pair of longest cycles in a $k$-connected graph intersect each other in at least $k$ vertices. In this paper, we show that every pair of longest cycles in a~$k$-connected graph on $n$ vertices intersect each other in at least~$\min\{n,8k-n-16\}$ vertices, which confirms Smith's conjecture when $k\geq (n+16)/7$. An analog conjecture for paths instead of cycles was stated by Hippchen. By a simple reduction, we relate both conjectures, showing that Hippchen's conjecture is valid when either $k \leq 6$ or $k \geq (n+9)/7$.

On conjectures concerning the graph grabbing game

Abstract:We consider two conjectures made in regard to the graph grabbing game, played on a vertex weighted graph. Seacrest and Seacrest conjectured in 2012 that the first player can win the graph grabbing game on any even-order bipartite graph. Eoh and Choi conjectured a strengthening of this in 2019, namely that the first player can win on any graph with no induced corona product of an odd cycle and a point. We provide a family of counterexamples to the latter conjecture, and propose a weaker conjecture in its place. We also show that the above two conjectures are equivalent when the vertex weights are all $0$ or $1$.

Abstract:I consider n-person normal form games where the strategy set of each player is a non-empty compact convex subset of an Euclidean space, and the payoff function of player i is continuous in joint strategies and continuously differentiable and concave in the player i's strategy. No further restrictions (such as multilinearity of the payoff functions or the requirement that the strategy sets be polyhedral) are imposed. I demonstrate that the graph of the Nash equilibrium correspondence on this domain is homeomorphic to the space of games. This result generalizes a well-known structure theorem in [Kohlberg, E., Mertens, J.-F., 1986. On the strategic stability of equilibria. Econometrica 54, 1003–1037]. It is supplemented by an extension analogous to the unknottedness theorems in [Demichelis S., Germano, F., 2000. Some consequences of the unknottedness of the Walras correspondence. J. Math.
