Abstract:In this short note we provide an elementary proof of the folklore result in the theory of isometric Lie group actions on Riemannian manifolds asserting that sections of polar actions are totally geodesic.

Abstract:We study polar actions with horizontal sections on the total space of certain principal bundles G/K→G/HG/K\to G/H with base a symmetric space of compact type. We classify such actions up to orbit equivalence in many cases. In particular, we exhibit examples of hyperpolar actions with cohomogeneity greater than one on locally irreducible homogeneous spaces with nonnegative curvature which are not homeomorphic to symmetric spaces.

Abstract:We prove that any polar action on a separable Hilbert space by a connected Hilbert Lie group does not have exceptional orbits. This generalizes a result of Berndt, Console and Olmos in the finite dimensional Euclidean case. As an application, we give a simple geometric proof of the fact that any hyperpolar action on a simply connected compact Riemannian symmetric space by a connected Lie group does not have exceptional orbits.

Abstract: We describe the proof that the period map from the Torelli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds to the classifying space of polarized Hodge structures is an embedding. The proof is based on the constructions of holomorphic affine structure on the Teichm\"uller space and Hodge metric completion of the Torelli space. A canonical global holomorphic section of the holomorphic $(n, 0)$ class on the Teichm\"uller space is constructed.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of strong local Torelli and T-class for polarized manifolds, and prove that strong local Torelli implies global Torelli theorem on the Torelli spaces for polarized manifolds in the T-class. We discuss many new examples of projective manifolds for which such global Torelli theorem holds. As applications we prove that, in these cases, a canonical completion of the Torelli space is a bounded pseudoconvex domain in complex Euclidean space, and show that generic Torelli implies global Torelli on moduli space with certain level structure.
Totally geodesic submanifolds and polar actions on Stiefel manifolds

Abstract:We classify totally geodesic submanifolds of the real Stiefel manifolds of orthogonal two-frames. We also classify polar actions on these Stiefel manifolds, specifically, we prove that the orbits of polar actions are lifts of polar actions on the corresponding Grassmannian. In the case of cohomogeneity-one actions we are able to obtain a classification for all real, complex and quaternionic Stiefel manifolds of $k$-frames.

Abstract:We observe quantum, Hong-Ou-Mandel, interference of fields produced by two remote atomic memories. High-visibility interference is obtained by utilizing the finite atomic memory time in four-photon delayed coincidence measurements. Interference of fields from remote atomic memories is a crucial element in protocols for scalable generation of multi-node remote qubit entanglement.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study polar foliations on simply connected symmetric spaces with non-negative curvature. We will prove that all such foliations are isoparametric as defined in [E. Heintze, X. Liu and C. Olmos, Isoparametric submanifolds and a Chevalley-type restriction theorem, Integrable systems, geometry, and topology, American Mathematical Society, Providence 2006, 151–190]. We will also prove a splitting theorem which, when leaves are compact, reduces the study of such foliations to polar foliations in compact simply connected symmetric spaces. Moreover, we will show that solutions to mean curvature flow of regular leaves in such foliations are always ancient solutions. This generalizes part of the results in [X. Liu and C.-L. Terng, Ancient solutions to mean curvature flow for isoparametric submanifolds, Math. Ann. 378 2020, 1–2, 289–315] for mean curvature flows of isoparametric submanifolds in spheres.

Abstract:We study isometric actions of compact Lie groups on complete orientable positively curved $n$-manifolds whose orbit spaces have non-empty boundary in the sense of Alexandrov geometry. In particular, we classify quotients of the unit sphere by actions of compact simple Lie groups with non-empty boundary. We deduce from this the list of representations of compact simple Lie groups that admit non-trivial reductions. As a tool of special interest, we introduce a new geometric invariant of a compact symmetric space, namely, the minimal number of points in a "spanning set" of the space.

Conformal actions of solvable Lie groups on closed Lorentzian manifolds

Abstract:We consider conformal actions of solvable Lie groups on closed Lorentzian manifolds. With anterior results in which we addressed similar questions for semi-simple Lie group actions, this work contributes to the understanding of the identity component $G$ of the conformal group of closed Lorentzian manifolds. In the first part of the article, we prove that $G$ is inessential if and only if its nilradical is inessential. In the second, we assume the nilradical essential and establish conformal flatness of the metric on an open subset, under certain algebraic hypothesis on the solvable radical. This is related to the Lorentzian Lichnerowicz conjecture. Finally, we consider the remaining situations where our methods do not apply to prove conformal flatness, and conclude that for an essential closed Lorentzian $n$-manifold, $n \geq 3$, the radical of its conformal group admits a local embedding into $O(2,n)$.

Abstract:We prove that a polar foliation of codimension at least three in an irreducible compact symmetric space is hyperpolar, unless the symmetric space has rank one. For reducible symmetric spaces of compact type, we derive decomposition results for polar foliations.

Isometric Lie 2-group actions on Riemannian groupoids

Abstract:We study isometric actions of Lie $2$-groups on Riemannian groupoids by exhibiting some of their immediate properties and implications. Firstly, we prove an existence result which allows both to obtain 2-equivariant versions of the Slice Theorem and the Equivariant Tubular Neighborhood Theorem and to construct bi-invariant groupoid metrics on compact Lie $2$-groups. We provide natural examples, transfer some classical constructions and explain how this notion of isometric $2$-action yields a way to develop a 2-equivariant Morse theory on Lie groupoids. Secondly, we give an infinitesimal description of an isometric Lie $2$-group action. We define an algebra of transversal infinitesimal isometries associated to any Riemannian $n$-metric on a Lie groupoid which in turn gives rise to a notion of geometric Killing vector field on a quotient Riemannian stack. If our Riemannian stack is separated then we prove that the algebra formed by such geometric Killing vector fields is always finite dimensional.

Abstract:Polarized and $G$-polarized CR manifolds are smooth manifolds endowed with a double structure: a real foliation $\Cal F$ (given by the action of a Lie group $G$ in the $G$-polarized case) and a transverse CR distribution $(E,J)$. Polarized means that $(E,J)$ is roughly speaking invariant by $\Cal F$. Both structures are therefore linked up. The interplay between them gives to polarized CR-manifolds a very rich geometry. In this paper, we study the properties of polarized and $G$-polarized manifolds, putting special emphasis on their deformations.

Abstract:In this survey paper, we take the viewpoint of polar invariants to the local and global study of non-dicritical holomorphic foliations in dimension two and their invariant curves. It appears a characterization of second type foliations and generalized curve foliations as well as a description of the GSV-index in terms of polar curves. We also interpret the proofs concerning the Poincaré problem with polar invariants.

Abstract:For finite classical groups acting naturally on the set of points of their ambient polar spaces, the symmetry properties of \emph{synchronising} and \emph{separating} are equivalent to natural and well-studied problems on the existence of certain configurations in finite geometry. The more general class of \emph{spreading} permutation groups is harder to describe, and it is the purpose of this paper to explore this property for finite classical groups. In particular, we show that for most finite classical groups, their natural action on the points of its polar space is non-spreading. We develop and use a result on tactical decompositions (an \emph{AB-Lemma}) that provides a useful technique for finding witnesses for non-spreading permutation groups. We also consider some of the other primitive actions of the classical groups.
