Abstract:In this talk I am going to present some of recent phenomenological applications of the ITMD [1,2] formalism extended to account for Sudakov form factor. In particular production of dijets in the future Electron Ion Collider is discussed.

Abstract:We study a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework for the processes of di-jet and heavy meson pair production in deep-inelastic-scattering in an electron-proton collider, considering the measurement of the transverse momentum imbalance of the two hard probes in the Breit frame. For the factorization theorem we employ soft-collinear and boosted-heavy-quark effective field theories. The factorized cross-section for both processes is sensitive to gluon unpolarized and linearly polarized TMD distributions and requires the introduction of a new soft function. We calculate the new soft function here at one loop, regulating rapidity divergences with the $\delta$-regulator. In addition, using a factorization consistency relation and a universality argument regarding the heavy-quark jet function, we obtain the anomalous dimension of the new soft function at two loops.

Abstract:In the latest years the theoretical and phenomenological advances in the factorization of several collider processes using the transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) have greatly increased. I attempt here a short resume of the newest developments discussing also the most recent perturbative QCD calculations. The work is not strictly directed to experts in the field and it wants to offer an overview of the tools and concepts which are behind the TMD factorization and evolution. I consider both theoretical and phenomenological aspects, some of which have still to be fully explored. It is expected that actual colliders and the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) will provide important information in this respect.

TMD factorisation for diffractive jets in photon-nucleus interactions

Abstract:Using the colour dipole picture and the colour glass condensate effective theory, we study the diffractive production of two or three jets via coherent photon-nucleus interactions at high energy. We consider the hard regime where the photon virtuality and/or the transverse momenta of the produced jets are much larger than the saturation momentum $Q_s$ of the nuclear target. We show that, despite this hardness, the leading-twist contributions are controlled by relatively large parton configurations, with transverse sizes $R\sim 1/Q_s$, which undergo strong scattering and probe gluon saturation. For exclusive dijets, this implies that both final jets have semi-hard transverse momenta ($P_\perp\sim Q_s$) and that one of them is aligned with the photon. The dominant contributions to the diffractive production of hard dijets ($P_\perp\gg Q_s$) rather come from three-jet final states, which are very asymmetric and will be referred to as 2+1 jets: two of the jets are hard, while the third one is semi-hard. We demonstrate that the leading-twist contributions to both exclusive dijets and the diffractive production of 2+1 jets admit transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorisation, in terms of quark and gluon diffractive TMD distribution functions, for which we obtain explicit expressions from first principles. We show that the contribution of 2+1 jets to diffractive SIDIS (semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering) takes the form of one step in the DGLAP evolution of the quark diffractive PDF.

Abstract:The semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) is the golden process for investigating the nucleon's transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) structure. We present the complete expression for SIDIS structure functions in the TMD factorization formalism at the next-to-leading power. All perturbative elements of the factorization theorem -- coefficient functions and evolution kernels -- are presented at one-loop accuracy. We found several differences with earlier derivations, which are due to accounting for nontrivial kinematics of the quark-gluon interference terms. As a side result, we present the definition and evolution of twist-three TMD fragmentation functions, including the leading-order evolution kernel.

Shedding light on intrinsic transversal momentum distribution and the $k_T$ factorization revitalization

Abstract:In this letter we realize the factorization of soft and hard dynamics in the transversal plane of an exclusive QCD process by introducing the intrinsic transversal momentum distributions (iTMDs). We ingeniously study the $\pi$ and $K$ electromagnetic form factors by matching the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation to the precise measurements or data-driven result from the modular dispersion relation, obtain the transversal-size parameter $\beta_\pi^2 = 0.51 \pm 0.04$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $\beta_K^2 = 0.30 \pm 0.05$ GeV$^2$ for the lowest Fock states. With this result, we extract the chiral mass of pion meson as $m_0^\pi(1 \, {\rm GeV}) = 1.84 \pm 0.07$ GeV %which shows a good consistence to the chiral perturbative theory, and explain the precise measurements of kaon form factor in the perturbative timelike region. As a byproduct, impressively, the introduce of iTMDs improves the perturbative QCD prediction down to a few GeV for the electromagnetic form factors, confronting to the available experiment measurements and the lattice QCD evaluations.

A Transverse Momentum Dependent Framework for Back-to-back Photon+jet Production

Abstract:We propose the $pp \rightarrow \text{jet} + \gamma $ as a new process for studying the Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMDs). To do so, we developed a novel framework for the jet-$\gamma$ imbalance in $pp \rightarrow \text{jet} + \gamma $ using Soft Collinear Effective Theory. The new framework opens up many new insights to the TMDs which the current TMD studies confined to the Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes cannot achieve. The established formalism provides, for the first time, a first principle prediction of the jet-$\gamma$ imbalance in $pp$ collisions and therefore a first direct probe of the factorization breaking effects when compared with the future experimental data. If the factorization breaking effects are found small, the process will offer the unique sensitivities to both the polarized and un-polarized quark/gluon TMDs. We demonstrate the predictive power of the framework by calculating each component in the formalism to the next-to-leading order accuracy and by realizing the next-to-leading-logarithmic evolution. We provide the first numerical estimates for this process, for both the unpolarized cross section and the Sivers asymmetry.
NNLL Transverse Momentum Dependent evolution in the Parton Branching method

Abstract:In the preparation period for precision measurements in the newly planned collider experiments, the understanding of the 3D structure of hadron is becoming increasingly urgent. This triggers the activities to include elements of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) factorization physics in Monte Carlo (MC) event generators. The method designed especially to address this need is the TMD Parton Branching (PB) method. The equivalence of the PB Sudakov form factor, both perturbative and non-perturbative, to the one of Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) is demonstrated and the recent development to increase the low-qt resummation precision of the PB Sudakov up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order by using effective soft-gluon coupling is discussed. The Collins-Soper (CS) kernel is extracted from PB Drell-Yan (DY) predictions obtained with different modelling of radiation.

Abstract:We investigate possible signatures of gluon saturation using forward p + A → j + j + X di-jet production processes at the Large Hadron Collider. In the forward rapidity region, this is a highly asymmetric process where partons with large longitudinal momentum fraction x in the dilute projectile are used as a probe to resolve the small x partonic content of the dense target. Such dilute-dense processes can be described in the factorization framework of Improved Transverse Momentum Distributions (ITMDs). We present a new model for ITMDs where we explicitly introduce the impact parameter ( b ) dependence in the ITMDs, to properly account for the nuclear enhancement of gluon saturation effects, and discuss the phenomenological consequences for p − Pb , p − Xe and p − O collisions at the LHC. While the case of p − p and e − p collisions is used to fix the model parameters, we find that, on average, the nuclear enhancement of the saturation scale is noticeably weaker than expected from naive scaling with a simple dependence on the atomic number. Since our model explicitly accounts for event-by-event fluctuations of the nuclear geometry, it can also be applied to study forward central correlations in p − A collisions.

Factorization and its Breaking in Dijet Single Transverse Spin Asymmetries in $pp$ Collisions

Abstract:We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

Abstract:The study and characterisation of transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions (TMDs) is a major goal of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) physics programme. The study of gluon TMDs poses a greater challenge than for quark TMDs in DIS measurements, as gluons do not directly couple to photons. The study of D meson pairs has been proposed to provide access to gluon TMDs, but is demanding due to the rarity of D production. Here, we discuss the feasibility of such a measurement, and touch upon wider issues to be considered when measuring TMDs at the EIC.

Abstract:Transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions have different operator definitions, depending on the process under consideration. We study that aspect of TMD factorization in the small-x limit, for the various unpolarized TMD gluon distributions encountered in the literature. To do this, we consider di-jet production in hadronic collisions, since this process allows to be exhaustive with respect to the possible operator definitions, and is suitable to be investigated at small x. Indeed, for forward and nearly back-to-back jets, one can apply both the TMD factorization and Color Glass Condensate (CGC) approaches to compute the di-jet cross-section, and compare the results. Doing so, we show that both descriptions coincide, and we show how to express the various TMD gluon distributions in terms of CGC correlators of Wilson lines, while keeping Nc finite. We then proceed to evaluate them by solving the JIMWLK equation numerically. We obtain that at large transverse momentum, the process dependence essentially disappears, while at small transverse momentum, non-linear saturation effects impact the various TMD gluon distributions in very different ways. We notice the presence of a geometric scaling regime for all the TMD gluon distributions studied: the “dipole” one, the Weizsäcker-Williams one, and the six others involved in forward di-jet production.

In this kinematic regime, the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization framework is required, promoting the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) of NRQCD to the so-called TMD shape functions (TMDShFs), which encode both the soft gluon radiation and the formation of the heavy-quark bound state. In this work, we apply an effective-field theory approach (combining NRQCD and SCET) to the photon-gluon fusion process in inclusive J/ψ leptoproduction. We derive a factorization theorem for the cross section in terms of TMDShFs, compute these quantities at next-to-leading order, establish their evolution, and study their matching onto the corresponding LDMEs in the high-transverse-momentum region. Our results are particularly relevant to the Electron-Ion Collider, where J/ψ leptoproduction can be used to probe gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (gluon TMDPDFs).

Abstract:We review our transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation formalism for heavy flavor dijet production at the EIC. In this formalism, we have calculated the heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, and in the resummed expression for the cross section. By establishing this formalism, we then study the effects of the mass corrections by providing predictions at the EIC for the massive case and for the case where the mass is neglected. We find that the heavy flavor mass effects can give sizable corrections to the predicted asymmetry.

Abstract:Differential measurements of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process with polarized beams provide important information on the three-dimensional structure of hadrons. Among the various observables are azimuthal asymmetries that start at subleading power, and which give access to novel transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs). Theoretical predictions for these distributions are currently based on the parton model rather than a rigorous factorization based analysis. Working under the assumption that leading power Glauber interactions do not spoil factorization at this order, we use the Soft Collinear Effective Theory to derive a complete factorization formula for power suppressed hard scattering effects in SIDIS. This yields generalized definitions of the TMDs that depend on two longitudinal momentum fractions (one of them only relevant beyond tree level), and a complete proof that only the same leading power soft function appears and can be absorbed into the TMD distributions at this order. We also show that perturbative corrections can be accounted for with only one new hard coefficient. Factorization formulae are given for all spin dependent structure functions which start at next-to-leading power. Prospects for improved subleading power predictions that include resummation are discussed.

Nuclear modified transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions

Abstract:In this study, we extend our previous global analysis of nuclear-modified transverse momentum distribution functions (nTMDs) to also consider the nuclear-modified collinear fragmentation function. Our methodology incorporates the global set of experimental data from both Drell-Yan production and Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering. Through a comprehensive global extraction of these distributions, we demonstrate the effectiveness of this extension by strongly describing the entire global dataset. A focal point of this paper is the impact of recent Jefferson Lab measurements. Most notably, to simultaneously describe experimental data at Jefferson Lab and HERMES we find that it is necessary to introduce a parameter which accounts for the non-perturbative scale evolution of the nTMDs. Additionally, we assess the kinematic coverage of the experimental data and provide insights into experimental opportunities at Jefferson Lab, future Electron-Ion Colliders, RHIC, and the LHC. These opportunities have the potential to significantly enhance and refine global analyses of nuclear-modified TMDs, contributing to a deeper understanding of the structure of cold nuclear matter.

Abstract:We study the transverse momentum distribution of hadrons within jets, where the transverse momentum is defined with respect to the standard jet axis. We consider the case where the jet substructure measurement is performed for an inclusive jet sample pp → jet + X. We demonstrate that this observable provides new opportunities to study transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) which are currently poorly constrained from data, especially for gluons. The factorization of the cross section is obtained within Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), and we show that the relevant TMDFFs are the same as for the more traditional processes semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and electron-positron annihilation. Different than in SIDIS, the observable for the in-jet fragmentation does not depend on TMD parton distribution functions which allows for a cleaner and more direct probe of TMDFFs. We present numerical results and compare to available data from the LHC.
Jet definition and TMD factorisation in SIDIS

Abstract:Using the colour dipole picture of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and the Colour Glass Condensate effective theory, we study semi-inclusive jet production in DIS at small $x$ in the limit where the photon virtuality $Q^2$ is much larger than the transverse momentum squared $P_\perp^2$ of the produced jet. In this limit, the cross-section is dominated by aligned jet configurations, that is, quark-antiquark pairs in which one of the fermions -- the would-be struck quark in the Breit frame -- carries most of the longitudinal momentum of the virtual photon. We show that physically meaningful jet definitions in DIS are such that the effective axis of the jet sourced by the struck quark is controlled by its virtuality rather than by its transverse momentum. For such jet definitions, we show that the next-to-leading order (NLO) cross-section admits factorisation in terms of the (sea) quark transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution, which in turn satisfies a universal DGLAP and Sudakov evolution.

Abstract:Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) appear in many scattering processes at high energy, from the semi-inclusive DIS experiments at a few GeV to the Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC. Predictions for TMD observables crucially depend on TMD factorization, which in turn determines the TMD evolution of the observables with energy. In this contribution to SPIN2014 TMD factorization is outlined, including a discussion of the treatment of the nonperturbative region, followed by a summary of results on TMD evolution, mostly applied to azimuthal asymmetries.
