Abstract:Drops in extensional flow undergo a deformation, which is primarily fixed by a balance between their surface tension and the viscous stress. This deformation, predicted and measured by Taylor [1] on millimetric drops, is expected to be affected by the presence of surfactants but has never been measured systematically. We provide a controlled experiment allowing to measure this deformation as a function of the drop size and of the shear stress for different surfactants at varying concentrations. Our observation is that the deformation predicted by Taylor is recovered at zero and high surfactant concentration, whereas it is smaller at concentrations close to the critical micellar concentration. This is in contradiction with the existing analytical models. We develop a new analytical model, taking into account the surfactant dynamics. The model predicts a transition between a deformation similar to the one of a pure liquid and a smaller one. We show that the transition is driven by a parameter KL, which compares adsorption and desorption dynamics. Finally, the concentration c∗, at which we observe this transition in the extensional flow is in good agreement with the one predicted by independent measurement of KL.

Transient deformation of a droplet near a microfluidic constriction : a quantitative analysis

Abstract:We report on experiments that consist in deforming a collection of monodisperse droplets produced by a microfluidic chip through a flow-focusing device. We show that a proper numerical modelling of the flow is necessary to access the stress applied by the latter on the droplet along its trajectory through the chip. This crucial step enables the full integration of the differential equation governing the dynamical deformation, and consequently the robust measurement of the interfacial tension by fitting the experiments with the calculated deformation. Our study thus demonstrates the feasibility of quantitative in-situ rheology in microfluidic flows involving e.g. droplets, capsules or cells.

Abstract:We present a parametric study of the unsteady phenomena associated with the flow of elongated gas bubbles traveling through liquid-filled square capillaries under high Weber number conditions. These conditions induce the formation of an indentation at the back of the bubble that commonly gives way to a deep reentrant liquid jet penetrating the bubble. Subsequent steps include pinch-off events in the penetrating liquid to generate one or multiple encapsulated drops which may coalesce, in conjunction with the bursting of the bubble-liquid interface by either the liquid jet or the drops. Some of these interfacial instabilities have previously been reported experimentally and numerically for liquid-liquid flow in microchannels. We carry out three-dimensional direct numerical simulations based on a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method capable of accounting for the presence and dynamic exchange of surfactants between the liquid bulk phase and the liquid-gas interface. Our results indicate that the delicate interplay among inertia, capillarity, viscosity, surfactant adsorption/desorption kinetics, and Marangoni stresses has a dramatic influence over the nonaxisymmetric morphological structures of the encapsulated drops-elongated bubble. This strong coupling also influences the pinch-off time, penetration depth of the liquid, and number, size, and velocity of the encapsulated drops across the bubble. The observed phenomena are summarized in three main morphological regimes based on surfactant-related parameters and dimensionless groups. Bursting bubble in an elasto-viscoplastic medium

Abstract:A gas bubble sitting at a liquid-gas interface can burst following the rupture of the thin liquid film separating it from the ambient, owing to the large surface energy of the resultant cavity. This bursting bubble forms capillary waves, a Worthington jet, and subsequent droplets for a Newtonian liquid medium. However, rheological properties of the liquid medium like elasto-viscoplasticity can greatly affect these dynamics. Using direct numerical simulations, this study exemplifies how the complex interplay between elasticity (in terms of elastic stress relaxation) and yield stress influences the transient interfacial phenomena of bursting bubbles. We investigate how bursting dynamics depends on capillary, elastic, and yield stresses by exploring the parameter space of the Deborah number $De$ (dimensionless relaxation time of elastic stresses) and the plastocapillary number $\mathcal{J}$ (dimensionless yield-stress of the medium), delineating four distinct characteristic behaviours. Overall, we observe a non-monotonic effect of elastic stress relaxation on the jet development while plasticity of the elasto-viscoplastic medium is shown to affect primarily the jet evolution only at faster relaxation times (low $De$). The role of elastic stresses on jet development is elucidated with the support of energy budgets identifying different modes of energy transfer within the elasto-viscoplastic medium. The effects of elasticity on the initial progression of capillary waves and droplet formation are also studied. In passing, we study the effects of solvent-polymer-viscosity ratio on bursting dynamics and show that polymer viscosity can increase the jet thickness apart from reducing the maximum height of the jet.

Juggling bubbles in square capillaries: an experimental proof of non-pairwise bubble interactions

Abstract:.The physical properties of an ensemble of tightly packed particles like bubbles, drops or solid grains are controlled by their interactions. For the case of bubbles and drops it has recently been shown theoretically and computationally that their interactions cannot generally be represented by pair-wise additive potentials, as is commonly done for simulations of soft grain packings. This has important consequences for the mechanical properties of foams and emulsions, especially for strongly deformed bubbles or droplets well above the jamming point. Here we provide the first experimental confirmation of this prediction by quantifying the interactions between bubbles in simple model foams consisting of trains of equal-volume bubbles confined in square capillaries. The obtained interaction laws agree quantitatively with Surface Evolver simulations and are well described by an analytically derived expression based on the recently developed non-pairwise interaction model of Höhler et al. [Soft Matter, 2017, 13,(7):1371], based on Morse-Witten theory. While all experiments are done at Bond numbers sufficiently low for the hydrostatic pressure variation across one bubble to be negligible, we provide the full analysis taking into account gravity in the appendix for the interested reader. Even though the article focuses on foams, all results directly apply to the case of emulsions.

Observation of the pressure effect in simulations of droplets splashing on a dry surface

Abstract:At atmospheric pressure, a drop of ethanol impacting on a solid surface produces a splash. Reducing the ambient pressure below its atmospheric value suppresses this splash. The origin of this so-called pressure effect is not well understood and this is the first study to present an in-depth comparison between various theoretical models that aim to predict splashing and simulations. In this work the pressure effect is explored numerically by resolving the Navier-Stokes equations at a 3-nm resolution. In addition to reproducing numerous experimental observations, it is found that different models all provide elements of what is observed in the simulations. The skating droplet model correctly predicts the existence and scaling of a gas film under the droplet, the lamella formation theory is able to correctly predict the scaling of the lamella ejection velocity as function of the impact velocity for liquids with different viscosity, and lastly, the dewetting theory's hypothesis of a lift force acting on the liquid sheet after ejection is consistent with our results.

Abstract:We develop a theory for drying-induced stresses in sessile, poroelastic drops undergoing evaporation on rigid surfaces. Using a lubrication-like approximation, the governing equations of three-dimensional nonlinear poroelasticity are reduced to a single thin-film equation for the drop thickness. We find that thin drops experience compressive elastic stresses but the total in-plane stresses are tensile. The mechanical response of the drop is dictated by the initial profile of the solid skeleton, which controls the in-plane deformation, the dominant components of elastic stress, and sets a limit on the depth of delamination that can potentially occur. Our theory suggests that the alignment of desiccation fractures in colloidal drops is selected by the shape of the drop at the point of gelation. We propose that the emergence of three distinct fracture patterns in dried blood drops is a consequence of a nonmonotonic drop profile at gelation. We also show that depletion fronts, which separate wet and dry solid, can invade the drop from the contact line and localize the generation of mechanical stress during drying. Abstract:The aim of this study is to derive accurate models for quantities characterizing the dynamics of droplets of non-vanishing viscosity in capillaries. In particular, we propose models for the uniform-film thickness separating the droplet from the tube walls, for the droplet front and rear curvatures and pressure jumps, and for the droplet velocity in a range of capillary numbers, $Ca$, from $10^{-4}$ to $1$ and inner-to-outer viscosity ratios, $\lambda$, from $0$, i.e. a bubble, to high viscosity droplets. Theoretical asymptotic results obtained in the limit of small capillary number are combined with accurate numerical simulations at larger $Ca$. With these models at hand, we can compute the pressure drop induced by the droplet. The film thickness at low capillary numbers ($Ca<10^{-3}$) agrees well with Bretherton's scaling for bubbles as long as $\lambda<1$. For larger viscosity ratios, the film thickness increases monotonically, before saturating for $\lambda>10^3$ to a value $2^{2/3}$ times larger than the film thickness of a bubble. At larger capillary numbers, the film thickness follows the rational function proposed by Aussillous \& Qu\'er\'e (2000) for bubbles, with a fitting coefficient which is viscosity-ratio dependent. This coefficient modifies the value to which the film thickness saturates at large capillary numbers. The velocity of the droplet is found to be strongly dependent on the capillary number and viscosity ratio. We also show that the normal viscous stresses at the front and rear caps of the droplets cannot be neglected when calculating the pressure drop for $Ca>10^{-3}$.
Elastocapillary Levelling of Thin Viscous Films on Soft Substrates

Abstract:A thin liquid film with non-zero curvature at its free surface spontaneously flows to reach a flat configuration, a process driven by Laplace pressure gradients and resisted by the liquid's viscosity. Inspired by recent progresses on the dynamics of liquid droplets on soft substrates, we here study the relaxation of a viscous film supported by an elastic foundation. Experiments involve thin polymer films on elastomeric substrates, where the dynamics of the liquid-air interface is monitored using atomic force microscopy. A theoretical model that describes the coupled evolution of the solid-liquid and the liquid-air interfaces is also provided. In this soft-levelling configuration, Laplace pressure gradients not only drive the flow, but they also induce elastic deformations on the substrate that affect the flow and the shape of the liquid-air interface itself. This process represents an original example of elastocapillarity that is not mediated by the presence of a contact line. We discuss the impact of the elastic contribution on the levelling dynamics and show the departure from the classical self-similarities and power laws observed for capillary levelling on rigid substrates.

Abstract:Elasto-capillary phenomena, involving finite deformation of elastomer and elasto-capillary effect of droplet/film, widely exist in biological and micro-electro-mechanical systems. To quantitatively analyze the influence of surface tension and to accurately predict the deformation of elastomer, we develop a finite strain model of hyperelastic materials, and then solve it by the explicit dynamics employing the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). Based on our model, we investigate the expansion of a small cavity in elastomer and examine the relation between radius and pressure of cavity. Besides, we explore the deformation of an elastic rod that is immersed in liquid and subjected to surface tension. Results show that when the elasto-capillary effect is neglected, edges of the rod would be unrealistically roughened, while the surface is actually smoothed as the surface tension increases. Moreover, we explore the elasto-capillary effect on advanced multiple-period wrinkling patterns in both planar and curved film–substrate systems, showing that the rough wavy surface can be smoothed by increasing surface tension. Our results not only provide fundamental insights into a variety of elasto-capillary phenomena, but also offer a platform to quantitatively guide rational designs of flexible smart devices actuated by surface tension.

Abstract:In this work simulations are presented of low viscosity ethanol and high viscosity silicone oil droplets impacting on a dry solid surface at atmospheric and reduced ambient pressure. The simulations are able to capture both the effect of the ambient gas pressure and liquid viscosity on droplet impact and breakup. The results suggests that the early time droplet impact and gas film behavior for both low and high viscosity liquids share the same physics. However, for later time liquid sheet formation and breakup high and low viscosity liquids behave differently. These results explain why for both kinds of liquids the pressure effect can be observed, while at the same time different high and low viscosity splashing regimes have been identified experimentally.

Abstract:We study the elastic properties of soft solids containing air bubbles. Contrary to standard porous materials, the softness of the matrix allows for a coupling of the matrix elasticity to surface tension forces acting on the bubble surface. Thanks to appropriate experiments on model systems, we demonstrate how the elastic response of the soft porous solid is governed by two dimensionless parameters: the gas volume fraction and a capillary number comparing the elasticity of the matrix with the stiffness of the bubbles. Furthermore, we show that our experimental results are accurately predicted by computations of the shear modulus through a micro-mechanical approach.

Abstract:Interactions between bubbles or drops play an important role in many physical phenomena. Whether we consider the interaction between two bubbles (drops) or between many (foams or emulsions), these interactions are complex and still poorly understood. An interesting case arises when two equal- and constant-volume bubbles (drops) interact with each other while being held by two axisymetrically positioned frames of circular cross-section and opening - a configuration which is frequently used in characterisation devices. The minimisation of the surface energy of this "double bubble" (or "double drop") configuration, constrained by the fixed volume and the frame boundaries, creates a complex landscape of shape spaces where physically stable shapes are separated by different types of instabilities. Combining experiment, finite element simulation and theory, we provide here for the first time a complete analysis of these shape spaces, considering the adhesive energy between the bubbles or drops (expressed by the contact angle) as an additional control parameter. We provide the full shape diagrams for different contact angles (0°, 60° and 90°), including a detailed discussion of four types of instabilities. Two of these break the axisymmetry whilst the two others break the connectivity of the ensemble. As far as we are aware, two of these instabilities have never been reported before. We accompany the shape and stability analysis with detailed mechanical characterisation using force and pressure measurements. Experiments, simulations and theory showing excellent agreement, this work will not only be useful in guiding the exploitation of double bubble (double drop) experiments on frames, but it also opens the possibility to exploit these configurations for the characterisation of increasingly complex bubble or drop interactions. Since the contact angle of 90° corresponds to an "imaginary" film separating the two bubbles (drops), our analysis naturally includes the shapes and stability of a capillary bridge between two circular frames.

Abstract:Flexible rings and rectangle structures floating at the surface of water are prone to deflect under the action of surface pressure induced by the addition of surfactant molecules on the bath. While the frames of rectangles bend inward or outward for any surface pressure difference, circles are only deformed by compression beyond a critical buckling load. However, compressed frames also undergo a secondary buckling instability leading to a rhoboidal shape. Following the pioneering works of \cite{Hu} and \cite{Zell}, we describe both experimentally and theoretically the different elasto-capillary deflection and buckling modes as a function of the material parameters. In particular we show how this original fluid structure interaction may be used to probe the adsorption of surfactant molecules at liquid interfaces.

Abstract:The ability of soft matter such as drops and bubbles to change shape dynamically during interaction can give rise to counter-intuitive behaviour that may be expected of rigid materials. Here we show that dimple formation on approach and the possibility of coalescence on separation of proximal drops in relative motion are examples of this general dynamic behaviour of soft matter that arise from the coupling between hydrodynamic forces and geometric deformations. The key parameter is a film capillary number Caf = (muVo/sigma)(R/Ho)2 that depends on viscosity mu, interfacial tension sigma, the Laplace radius R, characteristic film thickness Ho and velocity Vo.

Abstract:The spreading dynamics of Newtonian liquids have been extensively studied in hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces and its behavior has been extensively explored over the last years. However, drop impact of Non-Newtonian liquids still needs further study. Luu and Forterre (J. Fluid Mech., 632, 2009) successfully found scaling laws for yield-stress fluids on hydrophilic surfaces. They also uncovered interesting and yet unexplained regimes when the impact was performed on a superhydrophobic surface. In this work, we perform drop impact experiments on micro-patterned surfaces with two types of non-Newtonian liquids: one showing shear-thickening behavior and another one showing shear-thinning. Our results show that a typical shear-thickening liquid as cornstarch -at least a the relatively low concentration of 30\%w/w- spreads according to the scaling laws of Newtonian liquids, whereas visco-elastic liquids as Carbopol behave as predicted by Luu and Forterre for impact on hydrophilic surfaces, but show different scaling laws when they impact on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:Recent studies of elastocapillary phenomena have triggered interest in a basic variant of the classical Young-Laplace-Dupré (YLD) problem: the capillary interaction between a liquid drop and a thin solid sheet of low bending stiffness. Here we consider a two-dimensional model where the sheet is subjected to an external tensile load and the drop is characterized by a well-defined Young's contact angle θY . Using a combination of numerical, variational, and asymptotic techniques, we discuss wetting as a function of the applied tension. We find that, for wettable surfaces with 0<θY<π/2 , complete wetting is possible below a critical applied tension due to the deformation of the sheet in contrast with rigid substrates requiring θY=0 . Conversely, for very large applied tensions, the sheet becomes flat and the classical YLD situation of partial wetting is recovered. At intermediate tensions, a vesicle forms in the sheet, which encloses most of the fluid, and we provide an accurate asymptotic description of this wetting state in the limit of small bending stiffness. We show that bending stiffness, however small, affects the entire shape of the vesicle. Rich bifurcation diagrams involving partial wetting and "vesicle" solution are found. For moderately small bending stiffnesses, partial wetting can coexist with both the vesicle solution and complete wetting. Viscoelastic fluid flow in a slowly varying planar contraction: the role of finite extensibility on the pressure drop

Abstract:We analyze the steady viscoelastic fluid flow in slowly varying contracting channels of arbitrary shape and present a theory based on the lubrication approximation for calculating the flow rate-pressure drop relation at low and high Deborah ($De$) numbers. Unlike most prior theoretical studies leveraging the Oldroyd-B model, we describe the fluid viscoelasticity using a FENE-CR model and examine how the polymer chains' finite extensibility impacts the pressure drop. We employ the low-Deborah-number lubrication analysis to provide analytical expressions for the pressure drop up to $O(De^4)$. We further consider the ultra-dilute limit and exploit a one-way coupling between the parabolic velocity and elastic stresses to calculate the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid for arbitrary values of the Deborah number. Such an approach allows us to elucidate elastic stress contributions governing the pressure drop variations and the effect of finite extensibility for all $De$. We validate our theoretical predictions with two-dimensional numerical simulations and find excellent agreement. We show that, at low Deborah numbers, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid monotonically decreases with $De$, similar to the previous results for the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P fluids. However, at high Deborah numbers, in contrast to a linear decrease for the Oldroyd-B fluid, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid exhibits a non-monotonic variation due to finite extensibility, first decreasing and then increasing with $De$. Nevertheless, even at sufficiently high Deborah numbers, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid in the ultra-dilute and lubrication limits is lower than the corresponding Newtonian pressure drop.

Abstract:The deformation, movement and breakup of a wall-attached droplet subject to Couette flow are systematically investigated using an enhanced lattice Boltzmann colour-gradient model, which accounts for not only the viscoelasticity (described by the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation) of either droplet (V/N) or matrix fluid (N/V) but also the surface wettability. We first focus on the steady-state deformation of a sliding droplet for varying values of capillary number (Ca), Weissenberg number (Wi) and solvent viscosity ratio (beta). Results show that the relative wetting area A(r) in the N/V system is increased by either increasing Ca, or by increasing Wi or decreasing beta, where the former is attributed to the increased viscous force and the latter to the enhanced elastic effects. In the V/N system, however, Ar is restrained by the droplet elasticity, especially at higher Wi or lower beta, and the inhibiting effect strengthens with an increase of Ca. Decreasing beta always reduces droplet deformation when either fluid is viscoelastic. The steady-state droplet motion is quantified by the contact-line capillary number Ca-cl, and a force balance is established to successfully predict the variations of Ca-cl/Ca with beta for each two-phase viscosity ratio in both N/V and V/N systems. The droplet breakup is then studied for varying Wi. The critical capillary number of droplet breakup monotonically increases with Wi in the N/V system, while it first increases, then decreases and finally reaches a plateau in the V/N system.

Abstract:The dependence of the surface tension on a nanodrop radius is important for the new-phase formation process. It is demonstrated that the famous Tolman formula is not unique and the size-dependence of the surface tension can distinct for different systems. The analysis is based on a relationship between the surface tension and disjoining pressure in nanodrops. It is shown that the van der Waals interactions do not affect the new-phase formation thermodynamics since the effect of the disjoining pressure and size-dependent component of the surface tension cancel each other.
