Abstract:Many quantum algorithms contain an important subroutine, the quantum amplitude estimation. As the name implies, this is essentially the parameter estimation problem and thus can be handled via the established statistical estimation theory. However, this problem has an intrinsic difficulty that the system, i.e., the real quantum computing device, inevitably introduces unknown noise; the probability distribution model then has to incorporate many nuisance noise parameters, resulting that the construction of an optimal estimator becomes inefficient and difficult. For this problem, we apply the theory of nuisance parameters (more specifically, the parameter orthogonalization method) to precisely compute the maximum likelihood estimator for only the target amplitude parameter, by removing the other nuisance noise parameters. That is, we can estimate the amplitude parameter without estimating the noise parameters. We validate the parameter orthogonalization method in a numerical simulation and study the performance of the estimator in the experiment using a real superconducting quantum device.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to efficiently estimate the target amplitude parameter in quantum amplitude estimation (QAE) in quantum computing without estimating the noise parameter. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to overcome the impact of unknown noise existing in actual quantum devices on the performance of the QAE algorithm. Traditional QAE methods usually assume an explicit noise model and attempt to estimate the target parameter and the noise parameter simultaneously, but this method faces difficulties in practical applications because the noise sources in actual systems are complex and difficult to be fully modeled. Therefore, the paper proposes a new method. By applying the nuisance parameters theory, especially the parameter orthogonalization method, the target amplitude parameter can be directly estimated without explicitly estimating the noise parameter. This can avoid the complexity of multi - dimensional optimization problems and improve the efficiency and accuracy of estimation. The main contributions of the paper include: 1. **Introduction of an auxiliary quantum circuit**: In order to overcome the degeneracy problem of the model distribution, the paper introduces an ancillary Grover operator, generating a probability distribution that is similar but slightly different from the main circuit, so that the joint probability distribution is no longer degenerate. 2. **Application of the parameter orthogonalization method**: The paper elaborately deduces the specific implementation of the parameter orthogonalization method and obtains an analytical solution, so that the maximum likelihood estimator (ML estimator) can be efficiently solved in a one - dimensional optimization problem. 3. **Numerical and experimental verification**: The paper verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method through numerical simulation and experiments on real superconducting quantum devices. The results show that even with a limited number of measurements, the proposed method can effectively estimate the target parameter, and the estimation error is close to the Cramér - Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). In conclusion, this paper provides a new method for efficient and accurate quantum amplitude estimation in the presence of unknown noise, providing important technical support for the practical applications of quantum computing.
