Abstract:Maintaining wetland hydrological connectivity is crucial for sustaining ecological and environment functions. This study investigated the effects of vegetation distribution and tidal channel characteristics on hydrological connectivity of tidal flats under different formation processes. Using 2020 Google Earth and GF-2, tidal channels, morphological parameters, and vegetation distrution were extracted. Hydrological connectivity was assessed using the overmarsh path length (OPL). Finally, the variable importance in projection (VIP) analysis was employed to evaluate the influence of these factors on hydrological connectivity. Results revealed: (1) Morphological disparities between natural and human-modified tidal channels were evident, with natural channels displaying lower curvature (0.89–0.90) and higher density (14.49 km/km 2 ). (2) Regional variations were evident, with the west bank and natural tidal flats exhibiting greater connectivity compared to the east bank and human-modified areas. (3) Factors influencing connectivity varied across regions and formation processes. On the east bank, tidal channel density, bifurcation ratio, level, and vegetation distribution predominantly influence hydrological connectivity, whereas on the west bank and in human-modified tidal flats, tidal channel density, bifurcation ratio, and curvature were key factors. In natural tidal flats, tidal channel density was the primary, followed by the number, length, and area of tidal channels, as well as vegetation coverage. Overall, tidal channel density emerged as the foremost driver of connectivity. Hydrological connectivity positively correlated with tidal channel density and bifurcation rate, while negatively correlated with curvature. Additionally, vegetation distribution had a negative impact on natural tidal flats. These findings offer valuable insights for wetland restoration and conservation in the Liaohe Delta wetland.
