Abstract:These are introductory notes on symmetries in quantum field theory and how they apply to particle physics. The notes cover the fundamentals of group theory, their representations, Lie groups, and Lie algebras, along with an elaborate discussion of the representations of SU(N), Lorentz, and Poincare groups and their respective algebras. We spend a lot of time on the realisation of these symmetry groups in quantum field theory, as both global and gauge symmetries, as well as their spontaneous breaking and the Higgs mechanism. In the end, we culminate all the lessons from the course to enumerate the symmetries and field content of the Standard Model of particle physics and write down the Standard Model Lagrangian. Special consideration is given to how the weak-force gauge bosons and the matter fields obtain their mass via the Higgs mechanism.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to introduce the application of symmetry in quantum field theory, especially how to use these symmetries to construct and understand physical models in particle physics. Specifically, the author aims to:
1. **Introduce the basic theory of symmetry**: including the basics of group theory, representation theory, Lie groups and Lie algebras, etc., and discuss in detail \(SU(N)\), the Lorentz group and the Poincaré group and their corresponding algebraic representations.
2. **Explore the realization of symmetry in quantum field theory**: not only as global symmetries, but also as gauge symmetries, as well as their spontaneous breaking mechanisms and the Higgs mechanism.
3. **Summarize the symmetries and field content in the standard model**: Based on the above discussion, finally list all the symmetries and field content in the standard model of particle physics, and write out the Standard Model Lagrangian. Pay special attention to how the weak - force gauge bosons and matter fields acquire mass through the Higgs mechanism.
### Specific problem description
Through symmetry research, the author hopes to answer the following key questions:
- **How to describe symmetry with mathematical tools**: such as group theory and Lie algebras.
- **How these symmetries are applied to particle physics**: especially in the standard model, how to explain the interactions between elementary particles.
- **The role of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism**: Explain why some particles have mass while others do not.
### Paper structure and content overview
1. **Introduction part**: Introduces the importance of symmetry in modern physics and mentions the importance of Noether's theorem.
2. **Basic theory part**: Covers group theory, Lie groups, Lie algebras, etc., laying a mathematical foundation for the subsequent discussion.
3. **Realization of symmetry in field theory**: Discusses global symmetries and gauge symmetries, and their specific applications in quantum field theory.
4. **Construction of the standard model**: Starting from the perspective of symmetry, gradually constructs the standard model and explains its Lagrangian and the Higgs mechanism.
### Summary
The main purpose of this paper is to help readers understand the construction principles of the standard model of particle physics through systematically introducing the symmetry theory and its application in quantum field theory, especially the key role of symmetry in it. This not only helps to deeply understand the existing physical theories, but also provides a theoretical framework for future research.
