Abstract:Abstract We prove that in a compact manifold of dimension n ≥2, C 1+ α volume-preserving diffeomorphisms that are robustly transitive in the C 1 -topology have a dominated splitting. Also we prove that for three-dimensional compact manifolds, an isolated robustly transitive invariant set for a divergence-free vector field cannot have a singularity. In particular, we prove that robustly transitive divergence-free vector fields in three-dimensional manifolds are Anosov. For this, we prove a ‘pasting’ lemma, which allows us to make perturbations in conservative systems.

Abstract:The classical Mountain Pass Lemma of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz has been studied, extended and modified in several directions. Notable examples would certainly include the generalization to locally Lipschitz functionals by K.C. Chang, analyzing the structure of the critical set in the mountain pass theorem in the works of Hofer, Pucci-Serrin and Tian, and the extension by Ghoussoub-Preiss to closed subsets in a Banach space with recent variations. In this paper, we utilize the generalized gradient of Clarke and Ekeland's variatonal principle to generalize the Ghoussoub-Preiss's Theorem in the setting of locally Lipschitz functionals. We give an application to periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:This paper explores two generalizations of the classical Aubin–Lions Lemma. First, we give a sufficient condition to commute weak limit and multiplication of two functions. We deduce from this criteria a compactness theorem for degenerate parabolic equations. Second, we state and prove a compactness theorem for noncylindrical domains, including the case of dual estimates involving only divergence-free test functions.

Abstract:Given a connected finite graph $G$, an integer-valued function $f$ on $V(G)$ is called $M$-Lipschitz if the value of $f$ changes by at most $M$ along the edges of $G$. In 2013, Peled, Samotij, and Yehudayoff showed that random $M$-Lipschitz functions on graphs with sufficiently good expansion typically exhibit small fluctuations, giving sharp bounds on the typical range of such functions, assuming $M$ is not too large. We prove that the same conclusion holds under a relaxed expansion condition and for larger $M$, (partially) answering questions of Peled et al. Our techniques involve a combination of Sapozhenko's graph container methods and entropy methods from information theory.

Abstract:We investigate the consequence of two Lip$(\gamma)$ functions, in the sense of Stein, being close throughout a subset of their domain. A particular consequence of our results is the following. Given $K_0 > \varepsilon > 0$ and $\gamma > \eta > 0$ there is a constant $\delta = \delta(\gamma,\eta,\varepsilon,K_0) > 0$ for which the following is true. Let $\Sigma \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be closed and $f , h : \Sigma \to \mathbb{R}$ be Lip$(\gamma)$ functions whose Lip$(\gamma)$ norms are both bounded above by $K_0$. Suppose $B \subset \Sigma$ is closed and that $f$ and $h$ coincide throughout $B$. Then over the set of points in $\Sigma$ whose distance to $B$ is at most $\delta$ we have that the Lip$(\eta)$ norm of the difference $f-h$ is bounded above by $\varepsilon$. More generally, we establish that this phenomenon remains valid in a less restrictive Banach space setting under the weaker hypothesis that the two Lip$(\gamma)$ functions $f$ and $h$ are only close in a pointwise sense throughout the closed subset $B$. We require only that the subset $\Sigma$ be closed; in particular, the case that $\Sigma$ is finite is covered by our results. The restriction that $\eta < \gamma$ is sharp in the sense that our result is false for $\eta := \gamma$.

Abstract:In this note, we provide an elementary proof for the expression of $f(U)-f(V)$ in the form of a double operator integral for every Lipschitz function $f$ on the unit circle $\cir$ and for a pair of unitary operators $(U,V)$ with $U-V\in\mathcal{S}_{2}(\hilh)$ (the Hilbert-Schmidt class). As a consequence, we obtain the Schatten $2$-Lipschitz estimate $\|f(U)-f(V)\|_2\leq \|f\|_{\lip(\cir)}\|U-V\|_2$ for all Lipschitz functions $f:\cir\to\C$. Moreover, we develop an approach to the operator Lipschitz estimate for a pair of contractions with the assumption that one of them is a strict contraction, which significantly extends the class of functions from results known earlier. More specifically, for each $p\in(1,\infty)$ and for every pair of contractions $(T_0,T_1)$ with $\|T_0\|<1$, there exists a constant $d_{f, p,T_0}>0$ such that $\|f(T_1)-f(T_0)\|_p\leq d_{f,p, T_0}\|T_1-T_0\|_p$ for all Lipschitz functions on $\cir$. Using our Lipschitz estimates, we establish a modified Krein trace formula applicable to a specific category of pairs of contractions featuring Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations.

Abstract:Strong compactness results for families of functions in seminormed nonnegative cones in the spirit of the Aubin-Lions-Dubinskiĭ lemma are proven, refining some recent results in the literature. The first theorem sharpens slightly a result of Dubinskiĭ (in Mat. Sb. 67(109):609–642, 1965) for seminormed cones. The second theorem applies to piecewise constant functions in time and sharpens slightly the results of Dreher and Jüngel (in Nonlinear Anal. 75:3072–3077, 2012) and Chen and Liu (in Appl. Math. Lett. 25:2252–2257, 2012). An application is given, which is useful in the study of porous-medium or fast-diffusion type equations.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets in R-d. One of the fundamental results by Falconer and Marsh [On the Lipschitz equivalence of Cantor sets, Mathematika, 39 (1992), 223-233] establishes conditions for Lipschitz equivalence based on the algebraic properties of the contraction ratios of the self-similar sets. In this paper we extend the study by examining deeper such connections.A key ingredient of our study is the introduction of a new equivalent relation between two dust-like self-similar sets called a matchable condition. Thanks to a certain measure-preserving property of bi-Lipschitz maps between dust-like self-similar sets, we show that the matchable condition is a necessary condition for Lipschitz equivalence.Using the matchable condition we prove several conditions on the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets based on the algebraic properties of the contraction ratios, which include a complete characterization of Lipschitz equivalence when the multiplication groups generated by the contraction ratios have full rank. We also completely characterize the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets with two branches (i.e., they are generated by IFS with two contractive similarities). Some other results are also presented, including a complete characterization of Lipschitz equivalence when one of the self-similar sets has uniform contraction ratio.
Lipschitz Functions on Unions and Quotients of Metric Spaces

Abstract:Given a finite collection $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$ of metric spaces, each of which has finite Nagata dimension and Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$, we prove that their union has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. The short proof we provide is based on the Pelczyński decomposition method. A corollary is a solution to a question of Kaufmann about the union of two planar curves with tangential intersection. A second focus of the paper is on a special case of this result that can be studied using geometric methods. That is, we prove that the Lipschitz free space of a union of finitely many quasiconformal trees is isomorphic to $L^1$. These geometric methods also reveal that any metric quotient of a quasiconformal tree has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. Finally, we analyze Lipschitz light maps on unions and metric quotients of quasiconformal trees in order to prove that the Lipschitz dimension of any such union or quotient is equal to 1.

Extension of Lipschitz Functions Revisited

Abstract:The classical McShane-Whitney extension theorem for Lipschitz functions is refined by showing that for a closed subset of the domain, it remains valid for any interval of the real line. This result is also extended to the setting of locally (pointwise) Lipschitz functions. In contrast to Lipschitz and pointwise Lipschitz extensions, the construction of locally Lipschitz extensions is based on Lipschitz partitions of unity of countable open covers of the domain. Such partitions of unity are a special case of a more general result obtained by Zdeněk Frol\'ık. To avoid the use of Stone's theorem (paracompactness of metrizable spaces), it is given a simple direct proof of this special case of Frol\'ık's result. As an application, it is shown that the locally Lipschitz functions are precisely the locally finite sums of sequences of Lipschitz functions. Also, it is obtained a natural locally Lipschitz version of one of Michael's selection theorems.

Abstract:Let $L$ be the distinguished Laplacian on the Iwasawa $AN$ group associated with a semisimple Lie group $G$. Assume $F$ is a Borel function on $\mathbb{R}^+$. We give a condition on $F$ such that the kernels of the functions $F(L)$ are uniformly bounded. This condition involves the decay of $F$ only and not its derivatives. By a known correspondence, this implies pointwise estimates for a wide range of functions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on symmetric spaces. In particular, when $G$ is of real rank one and $F(x)={\rm e}^{it\sqrt x}\psi(\sqrt x)$, our bounds are sharp.

Abstract:In this mostly expository article, we give streamlined proofs of several well-known Lipschitz extension theorems. We pay special attention to obtaining statements with explicit expressions for the extension constants. One of our main results is an explicit version of a very general Lipschitz extension theorem of Lang and Schlichenmaier. A special case of the theorem reads as follows: If $X$ is any metric space and $A\subset X$ satisfies the condition $\text{Nagata}(n, c)$, then any $1$-Lipschitz map $f\colon A \to Y$ to a Banach space $Y$ admits a Lipschitz extension $F\colon X \to Y$ whose Lipschitz constant is at most $1000\cdot (c+1)\cdot \log_2(n+2)$. By specifying to doubling metric spaces, this recovers an extension result of Lee and Naor. We also revisit another theorem of Lee and Naor by showing that if $A\subset X$ consists of $n$ points, then Lipschitz extensions as above exist with a Lipschitz constant of at most $600 \cdot \log n \cdot (\log \log n)^{-1}$.

Abstract:The goal of this note is to prove that every real-valued Lipschitz function on a Banach space can be pointwise approximated on a given $\sigma$-compact set by smooth cylindrical functions whose asymptotic Lipschitz constants are controlled. This result has applications in the study of metric Sobolev and BV spaces: it implies that smooth cylindrical functions are dense in energy in these kinds of functional spaces defined over any weighted Banach space.

Abstract:We consider the class of convex composite minimization problems which consists of minimizing the sum of two nonsmooth extended valued convex functions, with one which is composed with a linear map. Convergence rate guarantees for first order methods on this class of problems often require the additional assumption of Lipschitz continuity of the nonsmooth objective function composed with the linear map. We introduce a theoretical framework where the restrictive Lipschitz continuity of this function is not required. Building on a novel dual representation of the so-called Pasch-Hausdorff envelope, we derive an exact Lipshitz regularization for this class of problems. We then show how the aforementioned result can be utilized in establishing function values-based rates of convergence in terms of the original data. Throughout, we provide examples and applications which illustrate the potential benefits of our approach.

Abstract:We analyse and characterise the notion of lattice Lipschitz operator (a class of superposition operators, diagonal Lipschitz maps) when defined between Banach function spaces. After showing some general results, we restrict our attention to the case of those Lipschitz operators which are representable by pointwise composition with a strongly measurable function. Mimicking the classical definition and characterizations of (linear) multiplication operators between Banach function spaces, we show that under certain conditions the requirement for a diagonal Lipschitz operator to be well-defined between two such spaces $X(\mu)$ and $Y(\mu)$ is that it can be represented by a strongly measurable function which belongs to the Bochner space $\mathcal M(X,Y) \big(\mu, Lip_0(\mathbb R) \big). $ Here, $\mathcal M(X,Y) $ is the space of multiplication operators between $X(\mu)$ and $Y(\mu),$ and $Lip_0(\mathbb R)$ is the space of real-valued Lipschitz maps with real variable that are equal to $0$ in $0. $ This opens the door to a better understanding of these maps, as well as finding the relation of these operators to some normed tensor products and other classes of maps.

Abstract:We prove a Lipschitz extension lemma in which the extension procedure simultaneously preserves the Lipschitz continuity for two non-equivalent distances. The two distances under consideration are the Euclidean distance and, roughly speaking, the geodesic distance along integral curves of a (possibly multi-valued) flow of a continuous vector field. The Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the extension can be estimated in terms of the Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the original function. This Lipschitz extension lemma allows us to remove the high integrability assumption on the solution needed for the uniqueness within the DiPerna-Lions theory of continuity equations in the case of vector fields in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$, where $p$ is larger than the space dimension, under the assumption that the so-called "forward-backward integral curves" associated to the vector field are trivial for almost every starting point. More precisely, for such vector fields we prove uniqueness and Lagrangianity for weak solutions of the continuity equation that are just locally integrable.
