Abstract:We introduce the category of finite strings and study its basic properties. The category is closely related to the augmented simplex category, and it models categories of linear representations. Each lattice of non-crossing partitions arises naturally as a lattice of subobjects.

Abstract:A ringed finite space is a ringed space whose underlying topological space is finite. The category of ringed finite spaces contains, fully faithfully, the category of finite topological spaces and the category of affine schemes. Any ringed space, endowed with a finite open covering, produces a ringed finite space. We introduce the notions of schematic finite space and schematic morphism, showing that they behave, with respect to quasi-coherence, like schemes and morphisms of schemes do. Finally, we construct a fully faithful and essentially surjective functor from a localization of a full subcategory of the category of schematic finite spaces and schematic morphisms to the category of quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes.

A finite approach to representable multicategories and related structures

Abstract:It is known that monoidal categories have a finite definition, whereas multicategories have an infinite (albeit finitary) definition. Since monoidal categories correspond to representable multicategories, it goes without saying that representable multicategories should also admit a finite description. With this in mind, we give a new finite definition of a structure called a short multicategory, which only has multimaps of dimension at most four, and show that under certain representability conditions short multicategories correspond to various flavours of representable multicategories. This is done in both the classical and skew settings.

Abstract:The finitistic dimension of a triangulated category is introduced. For the category of perfect complexes over a ring it is shown that this dimension is finite if and only if the small finitistic dimension of the ring is finite.

Abstract:We study the structure of the category of representations of $\mathbf{FA}$, the category of finite sets and all maps, mostly working over a field of characteristic zero. This category is not semi-simple and exhibits interesting features. We first construct the simple representations, recovering the classification given by Wiltshire-Gordon. The construction given here also yields explicit descriptions of the indecomposable projectives. These results are used to give a convenient set of projective generators of the category of representations of $\mathbf{FA}$ and hence a Morita equivalence result. This is used to explain how to calculate the multiplicities of the composition factors of an arbitrary object, based only on its underlying $\mathbf{FB}$-representation, where $\mathbf{FB}$ is the category of finite sets and bijections. This is applied to show how to calculate the morphism spaces between projectives in our chosen set of generators, as well as for a closely related family of objects (the significance of which can be shown by relative nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory).

Abstract:We assign functorially a $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice with semisimple Frobenius action to each abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This establishes an equivalence of categories that describes abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_p$ avoiding $\sqrt{p}$ as an eigenvalue of Frobenius in terms of simple commutative algebra. The result extends the isomorphism classification of Waterhouse and Deligne's equivalence for ordinary abelian varieties.

Abstract:Let (F, G) be an adjoint pair from a category A to a category B. The contravariantly finiteness of subcategories is proved to be preserved by F, and the covariantly finiteness of subcategories is preserved by F under some additional conditions. If A and B are length categories, G(Im (F)) = Im (G), and F is full, then the inclusion i : Im (F) hooked right arrow B has a right adjoint. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by Auslander and Reiten in [2].

Abstract:We define and study notions of comprehension in $(\infty,1)$-category theory. In essence, we do so by implementing Bénabou's foundations of naive category theory in a univalent meta-theory. In particular, we develop natural generalizations of smallness and relative definability in this context, and show for instance that the universal cartesian fibration is small. Furthermore, by building on Johnstone's notion of comprehension schemes for ordinary fibered categories, we characterize and relate numerous higher categorical properties and structures such as left exactness, local cartesian closedness, univalent morphisms and internal $(\infty,1)$-categories in terms of comprehension schemes.

Gluing of infinitesimal models of algebraic theories

Abstract:Categories of models of algebraic theories have good categorical properties except for gluing. Building upon insights and examples from Synthetic Differential Geometry, we introduce a generalisation of models of algebraic theories to infinitesimal models. We demonstrate that the category of infinitesimal models retains most of the good categorical properties, but with a stark improvement in the behaviour of gluing. This makes infinitesimal models an interesting natural construction with the ability to interpolate between algebra and geometry.

The fundamental theorem of finite semidistributive lattices

Abstract:We prove a Fundamental Theorem of Finite Semidistributive Lattices (FTFSDL), modelled on Birkhoff's Fundamental Theorem of Finite Distributive Lattices. Our FTFSDL is of the form "A poset L is a finite semidistributive lattice if and only if there exists a set Sha with some additional structure, such that L is isomorphic to the admissible subsets of Sha ordered by inclusion; in this case, Sha and its additional structure are uniquely determined by L." The additional structure on Sha is a combinatorial abstraction of the notion of torsion pairs from representation theory and has geometric meaning in the case of posets of regions of hyperplane arrangements. We show how the FTFSDL clarifies many constructions in lattice theory, such as canonical join representations and passing to quotients, and how the semidistributive property interacts with other major classes of lattices. Many of our results also apply to infinite lattices.

A Syntax for Strictly Associative and Unital $\infty$-Categories

Abstract:We present the first definition of strictly associative and unital $\infty$-category. Our proposal takes the form of a type theory whose terms describe the operations of such structures, and whose definitional equality relation enforces desired strictness conditions. The key technical device is a new computation rule in the definitional equality of the theory, which we call insertion, defined in terms of a universal property. On terms for which it is defined, this operation "inserts" one of the arguments of a substituted coherence into the coherence itself, appropriately modifying the pasting diagram and result type, and simplifying the syntax in the process. We generate an equational theory from this reduction relation and we study its properties in detail, showing that it yields a decision procedure for equality. Expressed as a type theory, our model is well-adapted for generating and verifying efficient proofs of higher categorical statements. We illustrate this via an OCaml implementation, and give a number of examples, including a short encoding of the syllepsis, a 5-dimensional homotopy that plays an important role in the homotopy groups of spheres.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study certain categorical-algebraic frameworks for basic homological algebra, introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.15896" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.15896">arXiv:2404.15896</a>, with the aim of better understanding the differences between them. We focus on homological self-duality, preservation of normal maps by dinversion and diexactness, finding counterexamples that separate any two of these conditions. On the way, we encounter new examples and new characterizations, such as the Second Isomorphism Property. We also consider homological self-duality in the context of regular categories. Our main technique is to investigate the lattice of normal subobjects of an object in any pointed category with kernels and cokernels. The category of monoidal semilattices is a context where we have easy control of these lattices. We show that properties of the homological frameworks under consideration may be expressed by means of lattice-theoretical properties, such as modularity and distributivity.

Abstract:We study locally finitary realizations of simple transitive module categories of infinite rank over the monoidal category $\mathscr{C}$ of finite dimensional modules for the complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. Combinatorics of such realizations is governed by six infinite Coxeter diagrams. We show that five of these are realizable in our setup, while one (type $B_\infty$) is not. We also describe the $\mathscr{C}$-module subcategories of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-mod generated by simple modules as well as the $\mathscr{C}$-module categories coming from the natural action of $\mathscr{C}$ on the categories of finite dimensional modules over Lie subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$.

Framed Combinatorial Topology with Labels in $\infty$-Categories

Abstract:Framed combinatorial topology is a recent approach to tame geometry which expresses higher-dimensional stratified spaces via tractable combinatorial data. The resulting theory of spaces is well-behaved and computable. In this paper we extend FCT by allowing labelling systems of meshes and trusses in $\infty$-categories, and build an alternative model of FCT by constructing $\infty$-categories that classify meshes and trusses. This will serve as the foundation for future work on models of higher categories based on generalised string diagrams and the study of generalised tangles.

Abstract:We study the Deligne interpolation categories for , first introduced by F. Knop. These categories interpolate the categories of finite-dimensional complex representations of the finite general linear group . We describe the morphism spaces in this category via generators and relations. We show that the generating object of this category (an analogue of the representation of ) carries the structure of a Frobenius algebra with a compatible -linear structure; we call such objects -linear Frobenius spaces and show that is the universal symmetric monoidal category generated by such an -linear Frobenius space of categorical dimension t . In the second part of the paper, we prove a similar universal property for a category of representations of .

Abstract:We survey the theory of locally rigid and rigid symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories over an arbitrary base $\mathcal{V}\in\mathrm{CAlg}(\mathbf{Pr}^\mathrm{L})$. Along the way, we introduce and study ``$\mathcal{V}$-atomic morphisms'', which are analogues of compact morphisms over an arbitrary base $\mathcal{V}$.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr {C}(G,H,\psi)$ be a finite group scheme-theoretical category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge 0$ as introduced by the first author. For any indecomposable exact module category over $\mathscr {C}(G,H,\psi)$, we classify its simple objects and provide an expression for their projective covers, in terms of double cosets and projective representations of certain closed subgroup schemes, which upgrades a result by Ostrik for group-theoretical fusion categories. As a byproduct, we describe the simples and indecomposable projectives of $\mathscr {C}(G,H,\psi)$, and parametrize the Brauer-Piccard group of ${\rm Coh}(G)$ for any finite connected group scheme $G$. Finally, we apply our results to describe the blocks of the center of ${\rm Coh}(G)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of an admissible partition of a simplicial polyhedral fan and define the category of a partitioned fan as a generalisation of the $\tau$-cluster morphism category of a finite-dimensional algebra. This establishes a complete lattice of categories around the $\tau$-cluster morphism category, which is closely tied to the fan structure. We prove that the classifying spaces of these categories are cube complexes, which reduces the process of determining if they are $K(\pi,1)$ spaces to two sufficient conditions. We prove that both conditions are satisfied for finite fans in $\mathbb{R}^2$ unless one particular identification occurs. As a consequence, the classifying space of the $\tau$-cluster morphism category of any $\tau$-tilting finite algebra of rank 2 is a $K(\pi,1)$ space for its picture group. As an application of the lattice structure, we show an analogous result holds for the Brauer cycle algebra of rank 3. In the final section we also offer a new algebraic proof of the relationship between an algebra and its $g$-vector fan.

Abstract:We give a categorification of the notion of a mathematical structure originally given by Bourbaki in their set theory textbook. We show that any isomorphism-invariant property of a finite structure can be computed by counting the number of isomorphic copies of small substructures it contains. Our main theorem in this direction is a generalization of the classical result of Hilbert about elementary symmetric polynomials generating the algebra of all symmetric polynomials. We also show that, for structures built from sets, the Yoneda functor extends to a canonical embedding of any such category of structures into an associated category of structures in the sense of classical model theory.

Abstract:A general method for lifting weak factorization systems in a category S to model category structures on simplicial objects in S is described, analogously to the lifting of cotorsion pairs in Abelian categories to model category structures on chain complexes. This generalizes Quillen's original treatment of (projective) model category structures on simplicial objects. As a new application we show that there is always a model category structure on simplicial objects in the coproduct completion of any (even large) category S with finite limits, which - if S is small - defines the same homotopy theory as any global model category of simplicial pre-sheaves on S. If S is, in addition, extensive, a similar model category structure exists on simplicial objects in S itself. In any case the associated left derivator exists on all diagrams despite the lack of colimits in the original category.
