Abstract:The list-decodable code has been an active topic in theoretical computer <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://science.There" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> are general results about the list-decodability to the Johnson radius and the list-decoding capacity theorem. In this paper we show that rates, list-decodable radius and list sizes are closely related to the classical topic of covering codes. We prove new general simple but strong upper bounds for list-decodable codes in general finite metric spaces based on various covering codes. The general covering code upper bounds can be applied to the case that the volumes of the balls depend on the centers, not only on the radius. Then any good upper bound on the covering radius or the size of covering code imply a good upper bound on the sizes of list-decodable codes. Our results give exponential improvements on the recent generalized Singleton upper bound in STOC 2020 for Hamming metric list-decodable codes, when the code lengths are large. A generalized Singleton upper bound for average-radius list-decodable codes is also given from our general covering code upper bound. We also suggest to study the combinatorial covering list-decodable codes as a natural generalization of combinatorial list-decodable codes. We apply our general covering code upper bounds for list-decodable rank-metric codes, list-decodable subspace codes, list-decodable insertion codes list-decodable deletion codes,list-decodable sum-rank-metric codes and list decodable permutation codes. Some new better results about non-list-decodability of rank-metric codes, subspace codes, sum-rank-metric codes and permutation codes with various metrics are obtained.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the research of list - decodable codes, especially exploring the relationship between list - decodable codes and covering codes. Specifically, the main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Studying list - decodable codes from the perspective of covering codes**: By introducing the concept of covering codes, the paper provides a new method to analyze and understand list - decodable codes. The author proves that in general finite metric spaces, the size of list - decodable codes can be upper - bounded estimated by the properties of covering codes. This method is not only applicable to Hamming metric spaces, but can also be extended to other metric spaces, such as rank metric, subspace metric, etc. 2. **Proposing new upper bounds**: Based on the theory of covering codes, the paper proposes new and more powerful upper bounds that can be applied to list - decodable codes in different metric spaces. For example, for list - decodable codes in Hamming metric spaces, the paper gives results that are stronger than the existing generalized Singleton upper bounds, especially in the case of large code lengths. 3. **Studying the conditions of non - list - decodability**: The paper also explores the non - list - decodability of certain code classes (such as rank - metric codes, subspace codes, etc.) under specific parameters. The author gives several sufficient conditions, indicating that these code classes cannot be list - decodable in some cases, which provides a new perspective for understanding the limitations of these code classes. 4. **Introducing new concepts**: The paper introduces the concept of \((R_{\text{list}}, L_1, L_2)\) - covering list - decodable codes, which is a more general form of list - decodable codes. This concept not only covers traditional list - decodable codes, but also extends to the generalization forms of locally decodable codes and perfect codes. 5. **Probabilistic construction methods**: The paper also proposes a method of constructing list - decodable codes from good covering codes by probabilistic methods. This method theoretically provides a new idea for designing efficient list - decodable codes. In summary, by introducing the concept of covering codes, this paper provides new tools and methods for the research of list - decodable codes, especially making important progress in upper - bound estimation and non - list - decodability conditions. These results not only deepen the understanding of list - decodable codes, but also provide theoretical support for practical applications.
