Abstract:Polygonal vertices convexo-concave determining is one of the fundamental issues in Computer Graphics. In this paper, plane space is separated into 2 region defined as positive region and negative region based on the direction and the stretched of the line segment. Accordingly transform identification of convexity or concavity of the next vertices into identification of the region position. Consequently the operation of multiplication can be averted. In order to do the best in practical determining, 3 areas is separated of the plane space, whereas not the same as earlier. These area are based on two horizontal lines, two vertical lines and two 45°diagonal lines through the vertices of the line segment. Because the partition is based on the polygon vertices and it has dynamic, therefore it's a dynamic distinct partition. These areas are defined as positive area, negative area or mixed area. In the case of the positive area or the negative area, we can confirm the convexity or concavity of the vertices through simple distinguishing. The result of test indicates it is a simple, highly efficient and reliable algorithm with high speed requires only (n/4) multiplication and(12n) comparisons.

Abstract:We consider the problem of deciding, given a sequence of regions, if there is a choice of points, one for each region, such that the induced polyline is simple or weakly simple, meaning that it can touch but not cross itself. Specifically, we consider the case where each region is a translate of the same shape. We show that the problem is NP-hard when the shape is a unit-disk or unit-square. We argue that the problem is NP-complete when the shape is a vertical unit-segment.

Abstract:The disjointness graph of a set system is a graph whose vertices are the sets, two being connected by an edge if and only if they are disjoint. It is known that the disjointness graph G of any system of segments in the plane is χ-bounded, that is, its chromatic number χ ( G ) is upper bounded by a function of its clique number ω ( G ) . Here we show that this statement does not remain true for systems of polygonal chains of length 2. We also construct systems of polygonal chains of length 3 such that their disjointness graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. In the opposite direction, we show that the class of disjointness graphs of (possibly self-intersecting) 2-way infinite polygonal chains of length 3 is χ-bounded: for every such graph G, we have χ ( G ) ≤ ( ω ( G ) ) 3 + ω ( G ) .

Abstract:We study the problem of finding a polygonal chain of line segments to cover a set of points in ℝd, d≥2, with the goal of minimizing the number of links or turns in the chain. A chain of line segments that covers all points in the given set is called a covering tour if the chain is closed, and is called a covering path if the chain is open. A covering tour or a covering path is rectilinear if all segments in the chain are axis-parallel. We prove that the two problems Minimum-Link Rectilinear Covering Tour and Minimum-Link Rectilinear Covering Path are both NP-hard in ℝ10.

Abstract:We study a variant of the geometric multicut problem, where we are given a set $\mathcal{P}$ of colored and pairwise interior-disjoint polygons in the plane. The objective is to compute a set of simple closed polygon boundaries (fences) that separate the polygons in such a way that any two polygons that are enclosed by the same fence have the same color, and the total number of links of all fences is minimized. We call this the minimum link fencing (MLF) problem and consider the natural case of bounded minimum link fencing (BMLF), where $\mathcal{P}$ contains a polygon $Q$ that is unbounded in all directions and can be seen as an outer polygon. We show that BMLF is NP-hard in general and that it is XP-time solvable when each fence contains at most two polygons and the number of segments per fence is the parameter. Finally, we present an $O(n \log n)$-time algorithm for the case that the convex hull of $\mathcal{P} \setminus \{Q\}$ does not intersect $Q$.

On Minimum Link Monotone Path Problems

Abstract:The problem of finding monotone paths between two given points has useful applications in path planning, and in particular, it is useful to look for minimum link paths. We are given a simple polygon P or a polygonal domain D with n vertices and a triplet of input parameters: (s, t, d), where s and t are two points in the plane and d is any direction. We show how to answer a query for the existence of a d-monotone path between s and t inside P (or D) in logarithmic time after preprocessing P in O(En) time, or D in O(En + ERlogR) time, where E is the size of the visibility graph of P (or D), and R is the number of reflex vertices in D. Our approach is based on the novel idea utilizing the dual graph of the trapezoidal map of P (or D). For polygonal domains, our approach uses a trapezoidal map associated with each visibility edge of D, and we show how to compute this large set of trapezoidal maps efficiently. Furthermore, we show how to output a minimum linkd-monotone path between points s and t, for an arbitrary input triplet (s, t, d).

Abstract:We consider a natural variation of the concept of stabbing a segment by a simple polygon: a segment is stabbed by a simple polygon $\mathcal{P}$ if at least one of its two endpoints is contained in $\mathcal{P}$. A segment set $S$ is stabbed by $\mathcal{P}$ if every segment of $S$ is stabbed by $\mathcal{P}$. We show that if $S$ is a set of pairwise disjoint segments, the problem of computing the minimum perimeter polygon stabbing $S$ can be solved in polynomial time. We also prove that for general segments the problem is NP-hard. Further, an adaptation of our polynomial-time algorithm solves an open problem posed by Löffler and van Kreveld [Algorithmica 56(2), 236--269 (2010)] about finding a maximum perimeter convex hull for a set of imprecise points modeled as line segments.

Abstract:Given a set 𝒮 of segments in the plane, a polygon P is an intersecting polygon of 𝒮 if every segment in 𝒮 intersects the interior or the boundary of P . The problem MPIP of computing a minimum-perimeter intersecting polygon of a given set of n segments in the plane was first considered by Rappaport in 1995. This problem is not known to be polynomial, nor it is known to be NP-hard. Rappaport (Int. J. Comput. Geom. Appl. 5:243–265, 1995 ) gave an exponential-time exact algorithm for MPIP. Hassanzadeh and Rappaport (Proceedings of the 23rd International Workshop on Algorithms and Data Structures, LNCS, vol. 5664, pp. 363–374, 2009 ) gave a polynomial-time approximation algorithm with ratio π/2≈ 1.57 . In this paper, we present two improved approximation algorithms for MPIP: a 1.28-approximation algorithm by linear programming, and a polynomial-time approximation scheme by discretization and enumeration. Our algorithms can be generalized for computing an approximate minimum-perimeter intersecting polygon of a set of convex polygons in the plane. From the other direction, we show that computing a minimum-perimeter intersecting polygon of a set of (not necessarily convex) simple polygons is NP-hard.
Non-crossing chords of a polygon with forbidden positions

Abstract:In this paper, we systematically study non-crossing chords of simple polygons in the plane. We first introduce the reduced Euler characteristic of a family of line-segments, and subsequently investigate the structure of the diagonals and epigonals of a polygon. Interestingly enough, the reduced Euler characteristic of a subfamily of diagonals and epigonals characterizes the geometric convexity of polygons. In particular, an alternative and complete answer is given for a problem proposed by G. C. Shephard. Meanwhile, we extend such research to non-crossing diagonals and epigonals with forbidden positions in some appropriate sense. We prove that the reduced Euler characteristic of diagonals with forbidden positions only depends on the information involving convex partitions by those forbidden diagonals, and it determines the shapes of polygons in a surprising way. Incidentally, some kinds of generalized Catalan's numbers naturally arise.

Minimum Star Partitions of Simple Polygons in Polynomial Time

Abstract:We devise a polynomial-time algorithm for partitioning a simple polygon $P$ into a minimum number of star-shaped polygons. The question of whether such an algorithm exists has been open for more than four decades [Avis and Toussaint, Pattern Recognit., 1981] and it has been repeated frequently, for example in O'Rourke's famous book [Art Gallery Theorems and Algorithms, 1987]. In addition to its strong theoretical motivation, the problem is also motivated by practical domains such as CNC pocket milling, motion planning, and shape parameterization. The only previously known algorithm for a non-trivial special case is for $P$ being both monotone and rectilinear [Liu and Ntafos, Algorithmica, 1991]. For general polygons, an algorithm was only known for the restricted version in which Steiner points are disallowed [Keil, SIAM J. Comput., 1985], meaning that each corner of a piece in the partition must also be a corner of $P$. Interestingly, the solution size for the restricted version may be linear for instances where the unrestricted solution has constant size. The covering variant in which the pieces are star-shaped but allowed to overlap--known as the Art Gallery Problem--was recently shown to be $\exists\mathbb R$-complete and is thus likely not in NP [Abrahamsen, Adamaszek and Miltzow, STOC 2018 & J. ACM 2022]; this is in stark contrast to our result. Arguably the most related work to ours is the polynomial-time algorithm to partition a simple polygon into a minimum number of convex pieces by Chazelle and Dobkin~[STOC, 1979 & Comp. Geom., 1985].

Abstract:A well-known measure to characterize the similarity of two polygonal chains is the famous Fréchet distance. In this paper, for the first time, we consider the problem of simplifying 3D polygonal chains under the discrete Fréchet distance. We present efficient polynomial time algorithms for simplifying a single chain, including the first near-linear O(n log n) time exact algorithm for the continuous min-# fitting problem. Our algorithms generalize to any fixed dimension d 3. Motivated by the ridge-based model simplification we also consider simplifying a pair of chains simultaneously and we show that one version of the general problem is NP-complete.
Partitioning a Polygon Into Small Pieces

Abstract:We study the problem of partitioning a given simple polygon $P$ into a minimum number of connected polygonal pieces, each of bounded size. We describe a general technique for constructing such partitions that works for several notions of `bounded size,' namely that each piece must be contained in an axis-aligned or arbitrarily rotated unit square or a unit disk, or that each piece has bounded perimeter, straight-line diameter or geodesic diameter. The problems are motivated by practical settings in manufacturing, finite element analysis, collision detection, vehicle routing, shipping and laser capture microdissection. The version where each piece should be contained in an axis-aligned unit square is already known to be NP-hard [Abrahamsen and Stade, FOCS, 2024], and the other versions seem no easier. Our main result is to develop constant-factor approximation algorithms, which means that the number of pieces in the produced partition is at most a constant factor larger than the cardinality of an optimal partition. Existing algorithms [Damian and Pemmaraju, Algorithmica, 2004] do not allow Steiner points, which means that all corners of the produced pieces must also be corners of $P$. This has the disappointing consequence that a partition often does not exist, whereas our algorithms always produce meaningful partitions. Furthermore, an optimal partition without Steiner points may require $\Omega(n)$ pieces for polygons with $n$ corners where a partition consisting of just $2$ pieces exists when Steiner points are allowed. Other existing algorithms [Arkin, Das, Gao, Goswami, Mitchell, Polishchuk and Tóth, ESA, 2020] only allow $P$ to be split along chords (and aim to minimize the number of chords instead of the number of pieces), whereas we make no constraints on the boundaries of the pieces.

Abstract:The efficiency of merging a set of polygons depends on the order of dissolving according to polygon proximity. Based on the analysis of several common union algorithm pros and cons, an union algorithm for polygon set based on multi-level grid is proposed. This algorithm spilting polygon set by using multi-grid not only narrows the high distortion area of data density, but also reduses the density of the first-level grid. Comparative experiments show the algorithm is more effective.

Abstract:We show that packing axis-aligned unit squares into a simple polygon $P$ is NP-hard, even when $P$ is an orthogonal and orthogonally convex polygon with half-integer coordinates. It has been known since the early 80s that packing unit squares into a polygon with holes is NP-hard~[Fowler, Paterson, Tanimoto, Inf. Process. Lett., 1981], but the version without holes was conjectured to be polynomial-time solvable more than two decades ago~[Baur and Fekete, Algorithmica, 2001].

Abstract:Given a set P of n points in the plane, Covering Points by Lines is the problem of finding a minimum-cardinality set L of lines such that every point p∈P is incident to some line ℓ∈L. As a geometric variant of Set Cover, Covering Points by Lines is still NP-hard. Moreover, it has been proved to be APX-hard, and hence does not admit any polynomial-time approximation scheme unless P = NP. In contrast to the small constant approximation lower bound implied by APX-hardness, the current best approximation ratio for Covering Points by Lines is still O(log⁡n), namely the ratio achieved by the greedy algorithm for Set Cover.In this paper, we give a lower bound of Ω(log⁡n) on the approximation ratio of the greedy algorithm for Covering Points by Lines. We also study several related problems including Maximum Point Coverage by Lines, Minimum-Link Covering Tour, Minimum-Link Spanning Tour, and Min–Max-Turn Hamiltonian Tour. We show that all these problems are either APX-hard or at least NP-hard. In particular, our proof of APX-hardness of Min–Max-Turn Hamiltonian Tour sheds light on the difficulty of Bounded-Turn-Minimum-Length Hamiltonian Tour, a problem proposed by Aggarwal et al. at SODA 1997.

Abstract:For a set of points in the plane and a real number , let be the graph defined on by connecting each pair of points at distance at most .We consider the connectivity of in the best scenario when the location of a few of the points is uncertain, but we know for each uncertain point a line segment that contains it. More precisely, we consider the following optimization problem: given a set of points in the plane and a set of k line segments in the plane, find the minimum with the property that we can select one point for each segment and the corresponding graph is connected. It is known that the problem is NP-hard. We provide an algorithm to exactly compute an optimal solution in time, for a computable function . This implies that the problem is FPT when parameterized by k . The best previous algorithm uses time and computes the solution up to fixed precision.

Constructing Many Faces in Arrangements of Lines and Segments

Abstract:We present new algorithms for computing many faces in arrangements of lines and segments. Given a set $S$ of $n$ lines (resp., segments) and a set $P$ of $m$ points in the plane, the problem is to compute the faces of the arrangements of $S$ that contain at least one point of $P$. For the line case, we give a deterministic algorithm of $O(m^{2/3}n^{2/3}\log^{2/3} (n/\sqrt{m})+(m+n)\log n)$ time. This improves the previously best deterministic algorithm [Agarwal, 1990] by a factor of $\log^{2.22}n$ and improves the previously best randomized algorithm [Agarwal, Matoušek, and Schwarzkopf, 1998] by a factor of $\log^{1/3}n$ in certain cases (e.g., when $m=\Theta(n)$). For the segment case, we present a deterministic algorithm of $O(n^{2/3}m^{2/3}\log n+\tau(n\alpha^2(n)+n\log m+m)\log n)$ time, where $\tau=\min\{\log m,\log (n/\sqrt{m})\}$ and $\alpha(n)$ is the inverse Ackermann function. This improves the previously best deterministic algorithm [Agarwal, 1990] by a factor of $\log^{2.11}n$ and improves the previously best randomized algorithm [Agarwal, Matoušek, and Schwarzkopf, 1998] by a factor of $\log n$ in certain cases (e.g., when $m=\Theta(n)$). We also give a randomized algorithm of $O(m^{2/3}K^{1/3}\log n+\tau(n\alpha(n)+n\log m+m)\log n\log K)$ expected time, where $K$ is the number of intersections of all segments of $S$. In addition, we consider the query version of the problem, that is, preprocess $S$ to compute the face of the arrangement of $S$ that contains any query point. We present new results that improve the previous work for both the line and the segment cases.
