Abstract:We show that there exist ordered orthogonal arrays, whose sizes deviate from the Rao bound by a factor that is polynomial in the parameters of the ordered orthogonal array. The proof is nonconstructive and based on a probabilistic method due to Kuperberg, Lovett and Peled.

Abstract:Orthogonal arrays are a type of combinatorial design that were developed in the 1940s in the design of statistical experiments. In 1947, Rao proved a lower bound on the size of any orthogonal array, and raised the problem of constructing arrays of minimum size. Kuperberg, Lovett and Peled (2017) gave a non-constructive existence proof of orthogonal arrays whose size is near-optimal (i.e., within a polynomial of Rao's lower bound), leaving open the question of an algorithmic construction. We give the first explicit, deterministic, algorithmic construction of orthogonal arrays achieving near-optimal size for all parameters. Our construction uses algebraic geometry codes.

Abstract:Enumerating nonisomorphic orthogonal arrays is an important, yet very difficult, problem. Although orthogonal arrays with a specified set of parameters have been enumerated in a number of cases, general results are extremely rare. In this paper, we provide a complete solution to enumerating nonisomorphic two-level orthogonal arrays of strength $d$ with $d+2$ constraints for any $d$ and any run size $n=\lambda2^d$. Our results not only give the number of nonisomorphic orthogonal arrays for given $d$ and $n$, but also provide a systematic way of explicitly constructing these arrays. Our approach to the problem is to make use of the recently developed theory of $J$-characteristics for fractional factorial designs. Besides the general theoretical results, the paper presents some results from applications of the theory to orthogonal arrays of strength two, three and four.

Larger Nearly Orthogonal Sets over Finite Fields

Abstract:For a field $\mathbb{F}$ and integers $d$ and $k$, a set ${\cal A} \subseteq \mathbb{F}^d$ is called $k$-nearly orthogonal if its members are non-self-orthogonal and every $k+1$ vectors of ${\cal A}$ include an orthogonal pair. We prove that for every prime $p$ there exists some $\delta = \delta(p)>0$, such that for every field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p$ and for all integers $k \geq 2$ and $d \geq k$, there exists a $k$-nearly orthogonal set of at least $d^{\delta \cdot k/\log k}$ vectors of $\mathbb{F}^d$. The size of the set is optimal up to the $\log k$ term in the exponent. We further prove two extensions of this result. In the first, we provide a large set ${\cal A}$ of non-self-orthogonal vectors of $\mathbb{F}^d$ such that for every two subsets of ${\cal A}$ of size $k+1$ each, some vector of one of the subsets is orthogonal to some vector of the other. In the second extension, every $k+1$ vectors of the produced set ${\cal A}$ include $\ell+1$ pairwise orthogonal vectors for an arbitrary fixed integer $1 \leq \ell \leq k$. The proofs involve probabilistic and spectral arguments and the hypergraph container method.

Approximation of Bounds on Mixed Level Orthogonal Arrays

Abstract:Mixed level orthogonal arrays are basic structures in experimental design. We develop three algorithms that compute Rao and Gilbert-Varshamov type bounds for mixed level orthogonal arrays. The computational complexity of the terms involved in these bounds can grow fast as the parameters of the arrays increase and this justifies the construction of these algorithms. The first is a recursive algorithm that computes the bounds exactly, the second is based on an asymptotic analysis and the third is a simulation algorithm. They are all based on the representation of the combinatorial expressions that appear in the bounds as expectations involving a symmetric random walk. The Markov property of the underlying random walk gives the recursive formula to compute the expectations. A large deviation (LD) analysis of the expectations provide the asymptotic algorithm. The asymptotically optimal importance sampling (IS) of the same expectation provides the simulation algorithm. Both the LD analysis and the construction of the IS algorithm uses a representation of these problems as a sequence of stochastic optimal control problems converging to a limit calculus of variations problem. The construction of the IS algorithm uses a recently discovered method of using subsolutions to the Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equation associated with the limit problem.

Abstract:We propose a novel method for the construction of orthogonal arrays. The algorithm makes use of the Kronecker Product operator in association with unit column vectors to generate new orthogonal arrays from existing orthogonal arrays. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm lies in the fact that it works well with any linear seed orthogonal array without imposing any constraints on the strength or the number of levels. The resulting orthogonal array has the same strength as the seed orthogonal array. We also discuss the proof of correctness of the algorithm. In the Results section we provide a list of new orthogonal arrays generated using this algorithm, that are currently not present in the libraries of orthogonal arrays.

Abstract:Orthogonal arrays (OAs) are a key research focus in combinatorial design theory and experimental design theory. They play a very important role in an increasing number of interdisciplinary fields, such as computer science, cryptography, multipartite quantum states and quantum information. And the open problems in many fields are closely related to the construction of orthogonal arrays with high strength and large size. At present, some open problems have been solved by using orthogonal arrays. There is an urgent need for developing such orthogonal arrays. This article introduces a general method for obtaining asymmetric orthogonal arrays with high strength. The proposed method is straightforward and constructive. The constructed OAs can be utilized to generate more OAs. Some selective OAs are tabulated for practical applications.

In this paper, some new series of large sets of orthogonal arrays are given by direct construction, juxtaposition construction, Hadamard construction, finite field construction, and difference matrix construction. Subsequently, many new infinite classes of orthogonal arrays are obtained by using these large sets of orthogonal arrays and Kronecker product.

Abstract:The generalized word length pattern of an orthogonal array allows a ranking of orthogonal arrays in terms of the generalized minimum aberration criterion (Xu and Wu [Ann. Statist. 29 (2001) 1066-1077]). We provide a statistical interpretation for the number of shortest words of an orthogonal array in terms of sums of $R^2$ values (based on orthogonal coding) or sums of squared canonical correlations (based on arbitrary coding). Directly related to these results, we derive two versions of generalized resolution for qualitative factors, both of which are generalizations of the generalized resolution by Deng and Tang [Statist. Sinica 9 (1999) 1071-1082] and Tang and Deng [Ann. Statist. 27 (1999) 1914-1926]. We provide a sufficient condition for one of these to attain its upper bound, and we provide explicit upper bounds for two classes of symmetric designs. Factor-wise generalized resolution values provide useful additional detail.

Counting Problems for Orthogonal Sets and Sublattices in Function Fields

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{K}=\mathbb{F}_q((x^{-1}))$. Analogous to orthogonality in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, there exists a well-studied notion of ultrametric orthogonality in $\mathcal{K}^n$. In this paper, we extend the work of \cite{AB24} about counting results related to orthogonality in $\mathcal{K}^n$. For example, we answer an open question from \cite{AB24} by bounding the size of the largest ``orthogonal sets'' in $\mathcal{K}^n$. Furthermore, we investigate analogues of Hadamard matrices over $\mathcal{K}$. Finally, we use orthogonality to compute the number of sublattices of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]^n$ with a certain geometric structure, as well as to determine the number of orthogonal bases for a sublattice in $\mathcal{K}^n$. The resulting formulas depend crucially on successive minima.

In many computer experiments, we would like to estimate the value of ∈ t [0,1]3 f(x)dx, which is E(f○X), by computing f at a number points in [0, 1]3. There are many ways to choose these points and one of these is randomized orthogonal arrays which was proposed independently by Owen and Tang [10, 18], respectively. In this article, we give a uniform bound on a combinational central limit theorem for the randomized orthogonal arrays sampling designs which are based on OA(q 2, 3, q, 2) by using Stein's method. Our order is which is better than Loh's order [6].

Almost Orthogonal Arrays: Theory and Search Three Ways

Abstract:Orthogonal arrays play a fundamental role in many applications. However, constructing orthogonal arrays with the required parameters for an application usually is extremely difficult and, sometimes, even impossible. Hence there is an increasing need for a relaxation of orthogonal arrays to allow a wider flexibility. The latter has lead to various types of arrays under the name of ``nearly-orthogonal arrays'', and less often ``almost orthogonal arrays''. The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we review all the existing relaxations, comparing and discussing them in depth. On the other hand, we explore how to find almost orthogonal arrays three ways: using integer programming, local search meta-heuristics and algebraic methods. We compare all our search results with the ones existing in the literature, and we show that they are competitive, improving some of the existing arrays for many non-orthogonality measures. All our found almost orthogonal arrays are available at a public repository.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{K}$ be a discrete valued field with finite residue field. In analogy with orthogonality in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, there is a well-studied notion of "ultrametric orthogonality" in $\mathcal{K}^n$. In this paper, motivated by a question of Erd{ő}s in the real case, given integers $k \geq \ell \geq 2$, we investigate the maximum size of a subset $S \subseteq \mathcal{K}^n \setminus\{{\bf 0}\}$ satisfying the following property: for any $E \subseteq S$ of size $k$, there exists $F \subseteq E$ of size $\ell$ such that any two distinct vectors in $F$ are orthogonal. Other variants of this property are also studied.

We prove that for every prime $p$ there exists a positive constant $\delta = \delta (p)$, such that for every field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p$ and for all integers $k \geq 2$ and $d \geq k^{1/(p-1)}$, there exists a $k$-nearly orthogonal set of at least $d^{\delta \cdot k^{1/(p-1)}/ \log k}$ vectors of $\mathbb{F}^d$. In particular, for the binary field we obtain a set of $d^{\Omega( k /\log k)}$ vectors, and this is tight up to the $\log k$ term in the exponent. For comparison, the best known lower bound over the reals is $d^{\Omega( \log k / \log \log k)}$ (Alon and Szegedy, Graphs and Combin., 1999). The proof combines probabilistic and spectral arguments.

Abstract:Abstract We study the expected number of real zeros for random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. It is well known that Kac polynomials, spanned by monomials with i.i.d. Gaussian coefficients, have only (2/π + o (1))log n expected real zeros in terms of the degree n . If the basis is given by the orthonormal polynomials associated with a compactly supported Borel measure on the real line, or associated with a Freud weight defined on the whole real line, then random linear combinations have $n/\sqrt{3} + o(n)$ expected real zeros. We prove that the same asymptotic relation holds for all random orthogonal polynomials on the real line associated with a large class of weights, and give local results on the expected number of real zeros. We also show that the counting measures of properly scaled zeros of these random polynomials converge weakly to either the Ullman distribution or the arcsine distribution.

Abstract:In an early paper, He and Tang [Biometrika 100 (2013) 254-260] introduced and studied a new class of designs, strong orthogonal arrays, for computer experiments, and characterized such arrays through generalized orthogonal arrays. The current paper presents a simple characterization for strong orthogonal arrays of strength three. Besides being simple, this new characterization through a notion of semi-embeddability is more direct and penetrating in terms of revealing the structure of strong orthogonal arrays. Some other results on strong orthogonal arrays of strength three are also obtained along the way, and in particular, two $\operatorname {SOA}(54,5,27,3)$'s are constructed.

Abstract:In this paper a new class of orthogonal arrays (OAs), i.e., OAs without interaction columns, are proposed which are applicable in factor screening, interaction detection and other cases. With the tools of di erence matrices, we present some general recursive methods for constructing OAs of such type. Several families of OAs with high percent saturation are constructed. In particular, for any integer λ ≥ 3, such a two-level OA of run 4λ can always be obtained if the corresponding Hadamard matrix exists.
