Abstract:Quantum computational devices, currently under development, have the potential to accelerate data analysis techniques beyond the ability of any classical algorithm. We propose the application of a quantum algorithm for the detection of unknown signals in noisy data. We apply Grover's algorithm to matched-filtering, a signal processing technique that compares data to a number of candidate signal templates. In comparison to the classical method, this provides a speed-up proportional to the square-root of the number of templates, which would make possible otherwise intractable searches. We demonstrate both a proof-of-principle quantum circuit implementation, and a simulation of the algorithm's application to the detection of the first gravitational wave signal GW150914. We discuss the time complexity and space requirements of our algorithm as well as its implications for the currently computationally-limited searches for continuous gravitational waves.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the challenge of detecting unknown signals in noisy data, especially identifying signals in gravitational - wave data through matched - filtering techniques. The paper proposes a quantum algorithm that utilizes the Grover search algorithm to accelerate the matched - filtering process. Compared with classical methods, this quantum algorithm can provide a square - root - level acceleration, that is, its speed improvement is proportional to the square root of the number of templates. This is particularly important for handling search tasks with a large number of templates, which can significantly reduce the computation time and make some searches that are difficult to achieve using the current state - of - the - art classical techniques possible. Specifically, the paper addresses the following problems: 1. **Improving the efficiency of matched - filtering**: By applying the Grover search algorithm, the method proposed in the paper can achieve a square - root - level acceleration in the matched - filtering process, thereby greatly reducing the computation time and resource requirements. 2. **Handling large - scale template libraries**: In gravitational - wave data processing, matched - filtering requires searching among a large number of candidate signal templates. The quantum algorithm proposed in the paper can effectively handle such large - scale search tasks, making tasks that were originally difficult to complete on classical computers feasible. 3. **Optimizing the search for continuous gravitational waves**: For the search for continuous gravitational waves, since the number of templates to be processed is extremely large, traditional classical methods are often limited by computing power. The quantum algorithm proposed in the paper is expected to improve the sensitivity and efficiency of such searches by providing a significant speed boost. In summary, this paper aims to solve the computational bottleneck problem in gravitational - wave data analysis through quantum computing techniques, especially their application in matched - filtering, thereby promoting the development of gravitational - wave astronomy.
