Abstract:Sport climbing was a new Olympic event introduced at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. It was composed of three disciplines, and the final rankings were determined by computing the product of each climber's rankings in the three disciplines, with the lowest score winning. In this paper, we compare this product-based scoring method with the more usual sum-based method. As well, we propose and analyze a new method based on taking the sum of the square roots of each climber's rankings.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the effectiveness and fairness of the scoring methods used in competitive climbing competitions at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Specifically, the paper compares the currently - used product scoring method with the more common additive scoring method and proposes a new scoring method based on the sum of the square roots of the rankings. By analyzing the competition results of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the author explores the impact of different scoring methods on the final rankings and whether these methods can better reflect the overall performance of athletes in comprehensive events. ### Main problems 1. **Selection of scoring methods**: - Is the current product scoring method reasonable? - Is the additive scoring method more fair? - Is there a new scoring method in between that can better balance the performance of each discipline? 2. **Fairness of competition results**: - Does the product scoring method over - reward athletes who perform well in one discipline but poorly in others? - Does the additive scoring method underestimate the importance of getting first place in one discipline? - Can the newly proposed square - root scoring method evaluate the comprehensive ability of athletes more fairly? ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Mathematical description of scoring methods**: - Provides a mathematical framework for multi - event scoring methods, including weighted and non - weighted additive scoring systems. - Introduces how to use the logarithmic function to convert the product scoring method into an additive scoring method. 2. **Analysis of the results of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics**: - Compares the differences in the results of the product scoring method and the additive scoring method in the men's and women's preliminaries and finals. - Analyzes the impact of different scoring methods on the final rankings, especially on speed - specific athletes. 3. **Proposal and analysis of a new scoring method**: - Proposes a new scoring method based on the sum of the square roots of the rankings. - Demonstrates the effect of the new scoring method in handling different ranking combinations through specific calculations and charts. ### Conclusion Through detailed analysis and comparison, the paper points out some shortcomings of the current product scoring method and proposes a new scoring method, aiming to evaluate the comprehensive performance of athletes in multiple disciplines more fairly. This research is of great significance for the improvement of scoring methods in future competitive climbing competitions.
